SoCalGas to Assist Local Fleet Owners in Securing Incentive Funds to Transition to Cleaner Technologies

LOS ANGELES, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today opened its annual initiative to assist fleet owners operating within the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) apply for incentive funding to replace diesel trucks with new near-zero emissions natural gas trucks…

LOS ANGELES, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today opened its annual initiative to assist fleet owners operating within the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) apply for incentive funding to replace diesel trucks with new near-zero emissions natural gas trucks through the Carl Moyer Program. Approximately $36 million is available for eligible clean air projects within the SCAQMD’s territory. Approved fleet owners can apply to receive up to $100,000 towards the purchase of new natural gas trucks and compressed natural gas fueling stations. This year’s application period will run through June 1, 2021.

The transportation sector is responsible for about 40 percent of California’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and more than 80 percent of the state’s NOx, or smog-forming, emissions. Heavy-duty trucks with the latest natural gas engines can cut smog-forming emissions by more than 90 percent compared to the cleanest heavy-duty diesel trucks on the road today. When these ultra-low emission natural gas trucks are fueled by renewable natural gas (RNG), GHG emissions are reduced by at least 80 percent. SoCalGas currently operates 15 public RNG fueling stations across its service territory.

According to a 2020 report, RNG use as a transportation fuel in California has increased 210 percent over the last five years, helping displace more than 4.2 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

“The transportation sector remains the largest contributor of greenhouse gases in our state,” said Rasha Prince, director of customer energy solutions at SoCalGas. “The Carl Moyer Program plays a key role in California’s strategy to achieve clean air and contributes to the Governor’s zero-emission transportation policy which sets new vehicle standards that require for 100 percent of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles in the state be zero-emission by 2045.”

“When local truck fleets make the transition to cleaner technologies, we take a step closer to solving our mobile source problem, which account for about 80% of NOx emissions in our region,” said Wayne Nastri, South Coast AQMD’s Executive Officer. “By providing incentives for the replacement of dirty, diesel-burning trucks, the Carl Moyer Program targets air pollution where it is needed most.”

Since 2018, SoCalGas has assisted customers in securing incentive funding for 409 near-zero emissions heavy-duty trucks and 34 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling stations through the Carl Moyer Program.  The emissions reductions attained by replacing 409 diesel trucks is equivalent to 48,671 traditional combustion engine cars off our roads. Last year, the utility assisted the City of El Monte in securing funding for a new RNG fueling station to support the City’s local transit buses, trucks, street sweepers, and waste haulers.

“The Carl Moyer Program has helped provide the needed funding to continue our transition to cleaner technology in our transportation sector,” said Salvador Mendez, Public Works and Utilities Director for the City of El Monte. “Equipment with cleaner technology can help improve the air quality in our city. We thank SoCalGas for their support and partnership in helping the City of El Monte secure this funding.”

The Carl Moyer Program is a tool to help California reduce emissions from the transportation sector and reach its climate goals. Since 1998, the program has provided $530 million in incentive funding, which has resulted in a reduction of approximately 8,601 tons per year of NOx and over 249 tons per year of particulate matter emissions throughout its territory.

The program grant is competitive, which means funds are distributed on a rolling basis until all money is awarded. Fleet owners interested in receiving support from SoCalGas in securing funding through the Carl Moyer Program can email CleanTransportation@semprautilities.com.

Global Environmental Consulting Services Market Report 2021 Featuring Major Players – AECOM; Amec Foster Wheeler; Tetra Tech; Arcadis and Environmental Resource Management

DUBLIN, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The “Environmental Consulting Services…

DUBLIN, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The “Environmental Consulting Services Global Market Report 2021: COVID-19 Impact and Recovery to 2030” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

Research and Markets Logo

The global environmental consulting services market is expected to grow from $29.08 billion in 2020 to $31.12 billion in 2021 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7%.

Environmental Consulting Services Global Market Report 2021: COVID-19 Impact and Recovery to 2030 provides the strategists, marketers and senior management with the critical information they need to assess the global environmental consulting services market as it emerges from the COVID-19 shut down.

Major companies in the environmental consulting services market include AECOM; Amec Foster Wheeler; Tetra Tech; Arcadis and Environmental Resource Management.

The growth is mainly due to the companies rearranging their operations and recovering from the COVID-19 impact, which had earlier led to restrictive containment measures involving social distancing, remote working, and the closure of commercial activities that resulted in operational challenges. The market is expected to reach $36.93 billion in 2025 at a CAGR of 4%.

The environmental consulting services (ECS) market consists of the sales of environmental consulting services and related goods by entities (organizations, sole traders and partnerships) that provide advice, assistance, and action plans to organizations and governments to manage their environment. It includes the prevention of environmental contamination, toxic substances, security consulting, waste management, and pollution control.

Environmental consulting services undertake processes where human capital is the major input. They make available the knowledge and skills of their employees, often on an assignment basis, where an individual or team is responsible for the delivery of services to the client. The environmental consulting services market is segmented into site remediation consulting services; water and waste management consulting services; environment management, compliance and due diligence and other environmental consulting services.

North America was the largest region in the global environmental consulting services market, accounting for 50% of the market in 2020. Western Europe was the second largest region accounting for 19% of the global environmental consulting services market. Africa was the smallest region in the global environmental consulting services market.

Environmental consulting companies are increasingly promoting the utilization and installation of IoT technologies that can help enterprises and governments monitor and conserve the environment. For instance, environmental sensors measure pollution causing particles in air and water, thereby monitoring air or water quality. They also detect radiations and hazardous chemicals in the environment. IoT technologies can also offer efficient solutions for waste collection and disposal. Smart waste collection systems could help track waste levels in garbage bins, provide transport optimization and operational analytics, thereby saving on government assets and minimum fuel consumption.

Sustainable development refers to the economic growth of a country or region, without or with minimum depletion of natural resources. The United Nations Organization established Sustainable Development Goals for all its members with an agenda to ensure responsible growth to 2030.

These goals include ensuring availability and equitable access to drinking water, improving water quality by reducing pollution and preventing dumping of hazardous waste, building safe and resilient infrastructure, integrating measures to tackle climate change in national policies, and the promotion of sustainable use of marine and terrestrial resources. Investments in meeting these targets is expected to drive demand for the services of environmental services companies.

Clean Cooking Alliance to Develop First Geospatial Data Platform for Clean Cooking in Partnership with World Resources Institute

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA), in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI), is building an online, open-source, and interactive geospatial data platform, the first of its kind focused on clean cooking. Called the Clean Cooking Explorer (CCE), this integrated energy planning platform aims to provide stakeholders across public and private sectors with the data and tools needed to inform their strategies for a robust clean cooking transition, especially those related to electric cooking.

The CCE will leverage WRI’s experience in the development of the Energy Access Explorer (EAE), while building on CCA’s deep engagement in developing clean cooking markets in Nepal and around the world.

“We are excited to help CCA build a pioneering tool for the clean cooking sector,” said Davida Wood, WRI’s Global Energy Access and Governance Lead. “This is a unique opportunity to apply broader knowledge about energy access to a critical and timely issue. Partnering with CCA will also boost WRI’s efforts through the integration of the platform with EAE.”

The Clean Cooking Explorer will enable users to visualize, interpret, and analyze geospatial datasets, such as location-specific data on demographics, access to cooking fuels, supply infrastructure and more. The tool will empower users to leverage optimal technology mixes for specific regions based on existing and potential demand and supply trends.

“The Clean Cooking Explorer will leverage the power of Geographic Information System (GIS) data and technology combined with stakeholder engagement to provide data-driven insights towards the adoption of clean cooking solutions,” said Dimitrios Mentis, Senior Energy Geographer at WRI and EAE Project Lead. “The CCE will also provide a valuable public good through up-to-date, open-source spatial data repository relevant for policymakers and other stakeholders.”

Once development is completed in 2021, the CCE will improve data-driven planning, coordination, and implementation for a large-scale transition to cleaner cooking solutions. The CCE will launch with data for Nepal, where CCA, WRI, and a wide range of partners have been engaged with the Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), the lead government agency promoting clean cooking in Nepal. AEPC will ensure that the CCE meets the priorities of the Government of Nepal (GoN), providing development support (including assistance with data access and support coordination with key stakeholders) and facilitating with testing and disseminating the CCE among users.

“The Government of Nepal is deeply committed to achieving universal access to clean cooking by 2030,” said Madhusudhan Adhikari, Executive Director of AEPC. “Thanks to tools like the Clean Cooking Explorer, there will be an evidence-based path to accelerating a national transition to clean cooking in Nepal. We are looking forward to working with the team to ensure the CCE is relevant and effective for our clean cooking sector.”

As requested by the GoN, CCA is also developing a Country Action Plan for Transforming the Cookstoves and Fuels Market in Nepal. The CCE will be an important tool in implementing this plan.

The CCE has a modular, easily adaptable design, so that in the future, CCA and its partners may replicate similar efforts elsewhere.

“Many countries are at a critical juncture in determining what a sustainable, equitable, and appropriate energy transition looks like,” said Donee Alexander, Senior Director of Evidence and Impact at CCA. “Nepal’s commitment to clean cooking makes it a natural starting point for this kind of data-driven planning, but we anticipate that variations of the CCE could be useful to many other governments and private sector players as they consider countries’ unique energy needs.”

The development of the CCE will be supported by the consulting firm Kartoza and the Energy Systems division of KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH-dES), who will also provide training for users. Kartoza has previously developed several high-profile, open-source geospatial projects, while KTH-dES has developed leading integrated systems analysis frameworks, open-source optimization energy models, innovative metrics to compare cooking energy access solutions, and the Open-Source Spatial Electrification Tool.

Brooklyn-Based Rental Shop Spearheads Shift to a More Sustainable Future With Silent, Clean E-Generators for Film Productions and Beyond

NEW YORK, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — In 2019, New York passed the most ambitious climate goals in the country, including net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. “We fully support these critical initiatives to slow the effects of climate change,” says Shattered Prism’s CEO Parker Shippey, “but we can’t place the burden of innovation on businesses whose focus must remain on productivity.”

Parker founded Shattered Prism in 2015 to offer waste-reducing solutions by promoting adoption of new technologies. “Many industries have grown accustomed to traditional tools and processes that are inefficient compared to today’s technologies,” he says. The company now distributes sustainable equipment – including e-generators and LED lights – to industries like Film & TV and Live Events, with locations in New York, Atlanta and New Orleans.

“E-generators are a key piece of a sustainable future,” says Parker. “So many industries rely on portable power to exist, and particularly the film/TV industry. We can’t expect these businesses to achieve green goals without offering viable solutions for power on the go.”

The film & television industry is notorious for its generator use. According to Emellie O’Brien, CEO of Earth Angel, productions consume, on average, 250 gallons of diesel fuel per shooting day, but that number can balloon to 1,000 gallons per day on the largest productions. “Investing in alternative energy technologies, like solar generators, is vital unless we want to continue to power our sets by emitting the same amount of carbon dioxide daily as the standard house emits in one year,” says Emellie.

Shattered Prism’s primary product is the VOLTstack portable, electric power station. “We have several size options available depending on the needs of our clients,” says Parker. “When it comes to developing and distributing new technologies, the goals of our customers must come first. A big part of that is offering complimentary power consultation services for first-time clients to ensure they have a positive experience with our equipment.”

Having worked in the film & television industry for more than a decade as an electrician and lighting designer through Local 52, Parker is intimately familiar with the demands of the booming New York film market. One important element of those objectives is maintaining good relationships with the neighbors.

“The ability to film productions in New York is a privilege. The locations our city has to offer provide the backdrop for countless iconic scenes in cinematic history. It is critical we maintain a positive relationship with the community so filmmakers can continue to feature these landmarks in their productions.”

One challenge to those good relations is the disruptive force of productions filming on-location around New York, specifically with respect to fumes and noise from diesel generators. “I’ve sat in on city council meetings where parades of residents complain about tripping over cables, or inhaling gas fumes.”

Shattered Prism’s e-generators provide a silent, clean alternative to diesel generators, enabling productions to mitigate location fatigue while moving closer to sustainability targets set by New York.

But what about recharging? “Our e-generators can be recharged from the grid or with e-vehicle charging stations in a few hours, but we are aware that New York’s grid is currently coal-powered. E-generators are more efficient than diesel generators, in that they don’t waste any of the energy. But, ultimately, the solar-compatibility of the VOLTstacks is a critical component to achieve net-zero emissions, and is a feature we’re very proud of.”

The company’s fleet currently includes 2kWh and 5kWh electric power stations. “And we recently welcomed the arrival of larger, 60kWh units,” says Parker. “These 60kWh units are the largest e-generators in the U.S. and we are thrilled to launch these revolutionary tools in the place we call home: New York.”

BETHESDA, Md. and PALO ALTO, Calif., March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Nearly three quarters of Americans surveyed do not know how much they are required to pay in fees to manage their retirement accounts, according to a recent survey commissioned by investment management firm Rebalance.

National poll reveals widespread lack of knowledge regarding hidden fees required to maintain retirement accounts.

Over half of Americans surveyed (57%) falsely believe that they pay either no fees, or very low fees, to maintain their retirement investment accounts. In addition, nearly one-quarter don’t even know how much they pay in fees.

In actuality, everyone with a retirement account, such as a 401(k) or IRA, pays fees. According to the 21st edition of the 401k Averages Book, the average employee working for a small business pays 2.22% per year in plan costs.

Additional Survey Findings:

  • Impact of COVID-19: Survey findings also indicate that COVID-19 has had an effect on retirement savings, as 66% of those surveyed have changed their approach to retirement investing as a result of COVID-19, with 62% saving more for retirement as a result of COVID-19.
  • Lack of Knowledge: Lack of knowledge about how their money is invested within their retirement account is another common theme, with 51% of those surveyed unsure of the breakdown of their investments between stocks and bonds.
  • Investment Anxiety: Americans feeling anxious about their ability to afford a comfortable retirement. If they were able to go back in time, 84% would want to learn more about investing earlier in life, while 89% would want to invest more in retirement accounts earlier in life.

“As we have heard from our small business owner clients for some time now—and these survey results show—there is a worrisome trend in the financial services industry of investment professionals charging outsized fees,” said Scott Puritz, Managing Director of Rebalance. “Unfortunately, many hard-working Americans are not seeing the expected returns on their investments due to high fees associated with their 401(k) retirement savings.”

Survey Methodology
This online survey of 1,016 U.S. adults, age 45-75 and working full time, was commissioned by Rebalance and conducted by SurveyMonkey between February 3-6, 2021. The survey has a 3.17% margin of error and a 95% confidence level. All data is self-reported by study participants and is not verified or validated. Detailed findings are available by request.
