WASHINGTON, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA), in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI), is building an online, open-source, and interactive geospatial data platform, the first of its kind focused on clean cooking. Called the Clean Cooking Explorer (CCE), this integrated energy planning platform aims to provide stakeholders across public and private sectors with the data and tools needed to inform their strategies for a robust clean cooking transition, especially those related to electric cooking.

The CCE will leverage WRI’s experience in the development of the Energy Access Explorer (EAE), while building on CCA’s deep engagement in developing clean cooking markets in Nepal and around the world.

“We are excited to help CCA build a pioneering tool for the clean cooking sector,” said Davida Wood, WRI’s Global Energy Access and Governance Lead. “This is a unique opportunity to apply broader knowledge about energy access to a critical and timely issue. Partnering with CCA will also boost WRI’s efforts through the integration of the platform with EAE.”

The Clean Cooking Explorer will enable users to visualize, interpret, and analyze geospatial datasets, such as location-specific data on demographics, access to cooking fuels, supply infrastructure and more. The tool will empower users to leverage optimal technology mixes for specific regions based on existing and potential demand and supply trends.

“The Clean Cooking Explorer will leverage the power of Geographic Information System (GIS) data and technology combined with stakeholder engagement to provide data-driven insights towards the adoption of clean cooking solutions,” said Dimitrios Mentis, Senior Energy Geographer at WRI and EAE Project Lead. “The CCE will also provide a valuable public good through up-to-date, open-source spatial data repository relevant for policymakers and other stakeholders.”

Once development is completed in 2021, the CCE will improve data-driven planning, coordination, and implementation for a large-scale transition to cleaner cooking solutions. The CCE will launch with data for Nepal, where CCA, WRI, and a wide range of partners have been engaged with the Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), the lead government agency promoting clean cooking in Nepal. AEPC will ensure that the CCE meets the priorities of the Government of Nepal (GoN), providing development support (including assistance with data access and support coordination with key stakeholders) and facilitating with testing and disseminating the CCE among users.

“The Government of Nepal is deeply committed to achieving universal access to clean cooking by 2030,” said Madhusudhan Adhikari, Executive Director of AEPC. “Thanks to tools like the Clean Cooking Explorer, there will be an evidence-based path to accelerating a national transition to clean cooking in Nepal. We are looking forward to working with the team to ensure the CCE is relevant and effective for our clean cooking sector.”

As requested by the GoN, CCA is also developing a Country Action Plan for Transforming the Cookstoves and Fuels Market in Nepal. The CCE will be an important tool in implementing this plan.

The CCE has a modular, easily adaptable design, so that in the future, CCA and its partners may replicate similar efforts elsewhere.

“Many countries are at a critical juncture in determining what a sustainable, equitable, and appropriate energy transition looks like,” said Donee Alexander, Senior Director of Evidence and Impact at CCA. “Nepal’s commitment to clean cooking makes it a natural starting point for this kind of data-driven planning, but we anticipate that variations of the CCE could be useful to many other governments and private sector players as they consider countries’ unique energy needs.”

The development of the CCE will be supported by the consulting firm Kartoza and the Energy Systems division of KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH-dES), who will also provide training for users. Kartoza has previously developed several high-profile, open-source geospatial projects, while KTH-dES has developed leading integrated systems analysis frameworks, open-source optimization energy models, innovative metrics to compare cooking energy access solutions, and the Open-Source Spatial Electrification Tool.

Brooklyn-Based Rental Shop Spearheads Shift to a More Sustainable Future With Silent, Clean E-Generators for Film Productions and Beyond

NEW YORK, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — In 2019, New York passed the most ambitious climate goals in the country, including net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. “We fully support these critical initiatives to slow the effects of climate change,” says Shattered Prism’s CEO Parker Shippey, “but we can’t place the burden of innovation on businesses whose focus must remain on productivity.”

Parker founded Shattered Prism in 2015 to offer waste-reducing solutions by promoting adoption of new technologies. “Many industries have grown accustomed to traditional tools and processes that are inefficient compared to today’s technologies,” he says. The company now distributes sustainable equipment – including e-generators and LED lights – to industries like Film & TV and Live Events, with locations in New York, Atlanta and New Orleans.

“E-generators are a key piece of a sustainable future,” says Parker. “So many industries rely on portable power to exist, and particularly the film/TV industry. We can’t expect these businesses to achieve green goals without offering viable solutions for power on the go.”

The film & television industry is notorious for its generator use. According to Emellie O’Brien, CEO of Earth Angel, productions consume, on average, 250 gallons of diesel fuel per shooting day, but that number can balloon to 1,000 gallons per day on the largest productions. “Investing in alternative energy technologies, like solar generators, is vital unless we want to continue to power our sets by emitting the same amount of carbon dioxide daily as the standard house emits in one year,” says Emellie.

Shattered Prism’s primary product is the VOLTstack portable, electric power station. “We have several size options available depending on the needs of our clients,” says Parker. “When it comes to developing and distributing new technologies, the goals of our customers must come first. A big part of that is offering complimentary power consultation services for first-time clients to ensure they have a positive experience with our equipment.”

Having worked in the film & television industry for more than a decade as an electrician and lighting designer through Local 52, Parker is intimately familiar with the demands of the booming New York film market. One important element of those objectives is maintaining good relationships with the neighbors.

“The ability to film productions in New York is a privilege. The locations our city has to offer provide the backdrop for countless iconic scenes in cinematic history. It is critical we maintain a positive relationship with the community so filmmakers can continue to feature these landmarks in their productions.”

One challenge to those good relations is the disruptive force of productions filming on-location around New York, specifically with respect to fumes and noise from diesel generators. “I’ve sat in on city council meetings where parades of residents complain about tripping over cables, or inhaling gas fumes.”

Shattered Prism’s e-generators provide a silent, clean alternative to diesel generators, enabling productions to mitigate location fatigue while moving closer to sustainability targets set by New York.

But what about recharging? “Our e-generators can be recharged from the grid or with e-vehicle charging stations in a few hours, but we are aware that New York’s grid is currently coal-powered. E-generators are more efficient than diesel generators, in that they don’t waste any of the energy. But, ultimately, the solar-compatibility of the VOLTstacks is a critical component to achieve net-zero emissions, and is a feature we’re very proud of.”

The company’s fleet currently includes 2kWh and 5kWh electric power stations. “And we recently welcomed the arrival of larger, 60kWh units,” says Parker. “These 60kWh units are the largest e-generators in the U.S. and we are thrilled to launch these revolutionary tools in the place we call home: New York.”

Over Half of Americans Surveyed Falsely Believe They Pay Low or No Fees to Manage their Retirement Accounts

BETHESDA, Md. and PALO ALTO, Calif., March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Nearly three quarters of Americans surveyed do not know how much they are required to pay in fees to manage their retirement accounts, according to a recent survey commissioned by investment management firm Rebalance.

National poll reveals widespread lack of knowledge regarding hidden fees required to maintain retirement accounts.

Over half of Americans surveyed (57%) falsely believe that they pay either no fees, or very low fees, to maintain their retirement investment accounts. In addition, nearly one-quarter don’t even know how much they pay in fees.

In actuality, everyone with a retirement account, such as a 401(k) or IRA, pays fees. According to the 21st edition of the 401k Averages Book, the average employee working for a small business pays 2.22% per year in plan costs.

Additional Survey Findings:

  • Impact of COVID-19: Survey findings also indicate that COVID-19 has had an effect on retirement savings, as 66% of those surveyed have changed their approach to retirement investing as a result of COVID-19, with 62% saving more for retirement as a result of COVID-19.
  • Lack of Knowledge: Lack of knowledge about how their money is invested within their retirement account is another common theme, with 51% of those surveyed unsure of the breakdown of their investments between stocks and bonds.
  • Investment Anxiety: Americans feeling anxious about their ability to afford a comfortable retirement. If they were able to go back in time, 84% would want to learn more about investing earlier in life, while 89% would want to invest more in retirement accounts earlier in life.

“As we have heard from our small business owner clients for some time now—and these survey results show—there is a worrisome trend in the financial services industry of investment professionals charging outsized fees,” said Scott Puritz, Managing Director of Rebalance. “Unfortunately, many hard-working Americans are not seeing the expected returns on their investments due to high fees associated with their 401(k) retirement savings.”

Survey Methodology
This online survey of 1,016 U.S. adults, age 45-75 and working full time, was commissioned by Rebalance and conducted by SurveyMonkey between February 3-6, 2021. The survey has a 3.17% margin of error and a 95% confidence level. All data is self-reported by study participants and is not verified or validated. Detailed findings are available by request.

SAN DIEGO, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Stellar Solar, a San Diego-based solar installer founded in 1998 with over 12,000 residential solar and commercial solar customers, has hired Albert Quiros and Bryan Stevenson as a Senior Energy Consultants to keep pace with their growing demand for residential and commercial solar installations and battery storage.

Albert Quiros and Bryan Stevenson bring a combined 15 years of solar experience with some of Stellar Solar’s most respected competitors including Renova Energy, Baker Electric Home Energy, HES Solar, and ASI Hastings.

Albert described his decision to join Stellar Solar after admiring their brand for years. “During my time with several Stellar competitors, I came up against them on a regular basis. Their longevity, educational approach to selling solar, and high number of customer referral sales always caught my attention. Being consistently voted San Diego’s Best Solar Company in the Union Tribune Readers Poll and overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews were big factors as well.”  Bryan had similar feedback on Stellar Solar adding, “Through the highs and lows of the solar business in San Diego, Stellar Solar’s brand and reputation has continued to shine through in the quality of their team, workmanship, and integrity.  Given their current explosion in both residential and commercial solar and battery storage, they needed someone who could hit the ground running and I was in a perfect position to do just that.  The opportunity to join a regional legacy brand like Stellar Solar created the perfect situation me to take my career to the next level.”

Stellar Solar sales managers Dave Gersz and Zac Dowell, who have been with Stellar Solar since 2008  and have sold over 1,000 systems each, issued a joint statement on the new hires:  “Albert and Bryan could have chosen any solar installer in San Diego to work for and we are thrilled they selected Stellar Solar.  Their track records as top performers who have succeeded with an educational approach to presenting solar clearly validated them.  With the increase in our residential solar and battery storage demand due in part to the combination of the 26% Federal Tax Credit and historically low finance rates, we needed solar professionals that could step in and produce  results immediately. Both Albert and Bryan fit that description perfectly, we are excited to have them on the Stellar team.”

BBVA Research publishes economic analysis: Solid employment figures show the recovery is on track

HOUSTON, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — According to the latest economic analysis from the BBVA Research team, February’s unemployment figures confirm that labor market conditions continue to improve as COVID-19 cases slow down, vaccination rates rise and restrictions are lifted in some parts of the U.S.

Nonfarm payrolls rose by 379,000 in February, with strong gains in leisure and hospitality, and smaller increases in temporary help services, healthcare and social assistance, retail trade and manufacturing. The analysis, co-authored by BBVA Chief Economist Nathaniel Karp and Principal Economist Marcial Nava, notes that nonfarm payroll in leisure and hospitality remains 3.5 million below a year ago, accounting for 43 percent of the total gap in private nonfarm payroll.

The report indicates the number of people not in the labor force has remained flat for nearly six  months at almost 101 million, still 5.5 million higher than 12 months ago. In addition, the participation rate has remained practically unchanged for the past six months at 61.4 percent. The employment-to-population ratio ticked up 0.1 percentage points to 57.6 percent, only 0.2 percentage points higher than last October’s. Both measures remain significantly below their pre-pandemic rates of 63.3 percent and 61.1 percent.

The team’s analysis concludes that in order to secure a faster recovery, policymakers should continue provisioning ample fiscal and monetary support. They indicate that premature removal of either could derail the post-pandemic recovery and eliminate the opportunity to boost the economy’s long-term potential.

LOS ANGELES, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — RepairSmith has been named to Fast Company‘s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2021 in the transportation category.

The list honors the businesses that have not only found a way to be resilient in the past year, but also turned those challenges into impact-making processes. These companies did more than survive, they thrived—making an impact on their industries and culture as a whole. This year’s MIC list features 463 businesses from 29 countries.

“We are honored to be recognized by Fast Company for driving transformation in the automotive service industry,” said RepairSmith CEO Joel Milne. “Innovation is at the core of everything we do at RepairSmith, powering our convenient and transparent service for car owners and fleet managers.”

RepairSmith is disrupting an industry that has not undergone any meaningful improvements in the past 50 years. The company launched its at-home service for car owners while simultaneously creating an opportunity for skilled technicians to be a part of the future of the automotive industry with a new career path. RepairSmith technicians are employees of the company and drive custom-outfitted repair vehicles equipped with tools and parts to deliver a five-star experience.

In 2020, RepairSmith expanded to service more than 550 cities. The company launched on-location service for property managers and fleet owners. RepairSmith introduced its ‘No-Contact Car Repair’ service at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The service allowed RepairSmith to continue to offer service while keeping its technicians and car owners safe by minimizing contact during appointments, using text and photos to communicate during appointments, and cleaning all high-touch areas in the vehicle.

In the past year, RepairSmith launched two corporate philanthropy programs. First, RepairSmith donated over $100,000 in free, ‘No Contact Car Repair’ service to frontline workers and those experiencing economic hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, RepairSmith launched its ‘Jump Start’ program and committed a quarter of a million dollars in free car repair service to nonprofits working to advance socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic equality.

RepairSmith has received many accolades for the company’s COVID-19 response, including two World Consumer Awards. RepairSmith CEO Joel Milne was named ‘Executive Hero of the Year’ for effective leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and RepairSmith technicians were honored as the ‘Essential Hero of the Year’ for providing thousands of car owners with safe and contactless car repair service.

Fast Company‘s editors and writers sought out the most groundbreaking businesses across the globe and industries. They also judged nominations received through their application process.

The World’s Most Innovative Companies is Fast Company‘s signature franchise and one of its most highly anticipated editorial efforts of the year. It provides both a snapshot and a road map for the future of innovation across the most dynamic sectors of the economy.

“In a year of unprecedented challenges, the companies on this list exhibit fearlessness, ingenuity, and creativity in the face of crisis,” said Fast Company Deputy Editor David Lidsky, who oversaw the issue with Senior Editor Amy Farley.

To coincide with the issue launch, Fast Company will host its first-ever Most Innovative Companies Summit on March 9 and 10. This virtual, multiday summit will celebrate the Most Innovative Companies in business, provide an early look at major business trends, and offer the inspiration and practical insights on what it takes to innovate in 2021.

“With the knowledge and expertise we’ve learned in other markets and the great satisfaction of our customers, we look forward to providing the best possible experience to the residents of Portland,” added Brigitte Courtehoux, Free2Move’s chief executive officer.

Portland is an ideal location for Free2Move as the city has consistently demonstrated its commitment to alternative mobility solutions. As the only car sharing provider, Free2Move will join a range of other mobility providers – including scooters and bikes – to ensure Portland residents will have a wide range of both personal and public transportation options.

Portland has long been a pioneer in car-sharing and Portlanders have enthusiastically embraced this way of getting around, said Chris Warner, director, Portland Bureau of Transportation. “We’re excited that Free2Move will be coming to our city and that more Portlanders will have another easy and convenient transportation option.”

With just a few clicks on an easy to use app, Free2Move customers will be able to locate a self-service car close to them and reserve it for a few minutes, a few hours or for the day. Customers can access everything they need to sign up for these services at https://www.free2move.com/en-US/free-floating-car-sharing-portland. By signing up in advance, Free2Move will be able to provide residents with updates on when the service as it is established in Portland.
