Kozak<\/span>, called for the government of <span class=\"xn-location\">Cuba<\/span> to free the journalist and poet Roberto Qui\u00f1ones, serving a one-year sentence since <span class=\"xn-chron\">September 11, 2019<\/span>. Despite months of international pressure and multiple appeals, Mr. Qui\u00f1ones is still in prison one month after qualifying for parole in mid-March. His wife, Ana Rosa Castro Bertr\u00e1n, was unable to see him when she visited on <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 15<\/span>, but she dropped off medical supplies. <\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpgb4aeleft\" style=\"WIDTH: 100%; TEXT-ALIGN: left\" dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpgb4aeleft\" title=\"Roberto Qui\u00f1ones\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Roberto Qui\u00f1ones\" align=\"middle\" imagelabel=\"General\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/1156938\/Global_Liberty_Alliance.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p>According to his wife, Mr. Qui\u00f1ones, who is immunosuppressed and suffering from a gastric ailment, has become &#8220;extremely thin,&#8221; and she is extremely concerned that she will not be able to visit him for the indefinite future: &#8220;the prison is <i>closing <\/i>tomorrow until further notice, which reflects how the virus has gotten worse throughout <span class=\"xn-location\">Cuba<\/span>.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Mr. Qui\u00f1ones was imprisoned on charges of &#8220;resistance&#8221; and &#8220;disobedience.&#8221; These alleged acts occurred in <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 2019<\/span>, when he was detained and beaten without cause for covering a politically-charged trial of homeschooling parents in Guant\u00e1namo. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These cruel tactics are part of a long-standing war of attrition waged by the Communist Party against dissidents and other liberty advocates. Party apparatchiks want to break Qui\u00f1ones, but he will stand firm. They will fail,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Jason Poblete<\/span>. &#8220;We will continue to highlight these abuses, help secure Qui\u00f1ones&#8217;s freedom, and, eventually, hold Qui\u00f1ones&#8217;s abusers to account.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><b>Qui\u00f1ones Matter Summary <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Roberto de Jes\u00fas Qui\u00f1ones Haces, like many freethinkers, has suffered several decades of the Cuban regime&#8217;s persecution. In the past, he has been blocked from traveling abroad and has undergone multiple unlawful searches-and-seizures and detentions. <\/p>\n<p>On <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 22, 2019<\/span>, Mr. Qui\u00f1ones was arrested at the Guant\u00e1namo courthouse and beaten for five days. He had been covering the trial of Pastors Rigal and Exp\u00f3sito for homeschooling, for <i>CubaNet<\/i>. Radio Mart\u00ed has a recording of Mr. Qui\u00f1ones speaking about the beating he received here, and ADN Cuba shows photo evidence of his attack in a profile of the case here. <\/p>\n<p>In <span class=\"xn-chron\">June 2019<\/span>, GLA agreed to work on Mr. Qui\u00f1ones&#8217;s behalf. On <span class=\"xn-chron\">August 1<\/span>, he was cited for refusing to pay a fine for his alleged misbehavior. This was the day after U.S. Secretary of State <span class=\"xn-person\">Mike Pompeo<\/span> expressed his concern for Mr. Qui\u00f1ones in a phone interview. <\/p>\n<p>Mr. Qui\u00f1ones appealed his first sentence from house arrest. This appeal was rejected and he was imprisoned on <span class=\"xn-chron\">September 11<\/span>. On <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 1, 2020<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">One Free Press<\/span> and the Committee to Protect Journalists featured Mr. Qui\u00f1ones as one of several journalists worldwide who was unjustly imprisoned. <\/p>\n<p>In support of Mr. Qui\u00f1ones and his long-suffering family, and since there is no legal reason to have detained him to begin with, GLA demands the Cuban regime release Mr. Qui\u00f1ones immediately.
