The GCI is a yearly assessment\u00a0of where women have the best and worst chances of equal treatment at work\u00a0in countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a group of mostly rich countries.<\/p>\n<div class=\"PRN_ImbeddedAssetReference\" id=\"DivAssetPlaceHolder1\">\n<p>\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/1449754\/gci2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/1449754\/gci2.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The GCI, which combines data on higher education, labour-force participation, pay, child-care costs, maternity and paternity rights, business-school applications and representation in senior jobs to create a ranking of 29 OECD countries, shows that <span class=\"xn-location\">Sweden<\/span> is the best place to work if you are a woman, followed by its Nordic neighbours, <span class=\"xn-location\">Iceland<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Finland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Norway<\/span>. The Nordics are particularly good at helping women complete university, secure a job, access senior positions, and take advantage of quality parental-leave systems and flexible work schedules.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">South Korea<\/span> bottoms out the index for the ninth year in a row with <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Turkey<\/span> not far behind. Societal norms in <span class=\"xn-location\">Asia<\/span> still expect women to choose between having a family or a career.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>According to the analysis accompanying this year&#8217;s GCI index <u><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3086786-1&amp;h=4216174515&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.economist.com%2FGCeilingIndex&amp;a=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.economist.com%2FGCeilingIndex\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/www.economist.com\/GCeilingIndex<\/a><\/u>, there is progress being made in America where 41% of managers are women and 28% of board members are female, above the OECD average. This is evidenced in part by women taking CEO roles at notable American companies over the past year including Citigroup, UPS, Walgreens and TIAA.<\/p>\n<p><b>Additional highlights of <i>The Economist<\/i>&#8216;s 2021 glass-ceiling index:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>The US moved four spots up on the index from last year. While its proportion of women in management roles and on boards is above average, it remains stuck below the OECD average with no federally-mandated paid parental leave <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Britain<\/span> improved by three spots on the index this year; its share of women in senior jobs is around a third <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Germany<\/span> moved down the ranking from last year to #22. German women hold just 29% of managerial roles, and a quarter of seats on boards <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">France<\/span> ranks #5 in the GCI, the same as last year. <span class=\"xn-location\">France<\/span> ranks second for the highest share of women on company boards, behind <span class=\"xn-location\">Iceland<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the ninth year that\u00a0<i>The Economist<\/i>\u00a0has released its glass-ceiling index. When it was launched in 2013 there were five indicators and 26 countries; today it consists of ten indicators including maternity and paternity leave for 29 OECD countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Glass Ceiling Index sits within a new hub, &#8220;<u><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3086786-1&amp;h=2746404056&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.economist.com%2FIWDay&amp;a=Women+Around+the+World\" rel=\"nofollow\">Women Around the World<\/a><\/u>&#8220;, <i>The Economist <\/i>has launched in celebration of International Women&#8217;s Day.
