The bottom line is that the Hawkeye State&#8217;s sportsbooks continue to reap significant benefits of no in-person registration requirements, according to analysts for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3088220-1&amp;h=1512767742&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.playia.com%2Frevenue&amp;a=PlayIA\" rel=\"nofollow\">PlayIA<\/a>, which tracks regulated online and retail gaming in the state. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa<\/span> remains perhaps the most compelling case study yet on the effects of in-person registration requirements,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Jessica Welman<\/span>, an analyst for PlayIA.com. &#8220;February is a short month with only one NFL game to bet on, the Super Bowl, so the relatively flat month-over-month results can be misleading on the surface. But another strong showing still places <span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa<\/span> in a class of states that are either larger or have far more mature gaming markets. And that would not be possible under the old requirements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Online and retail sportsbooks generated <span class=\"xn-money\">$143.6 million<\/span> in wagers in February, according to official data released Friday. That is down 3.9% from the record <span class=\"xn-money\">$149.5 million<\/span> handle in January. But betting per day in the 28 days of the month was a record <span class=\"xn-money\">$5.1 million<\/span>, which was up from the <span class=\"xn-money\">$4.8 million<\/span> per day bet in the 31 days of January.<\/p>\n<p>February&#8217;s handle pushed <span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa&#8217;s<\/span> lifetime handle to <span class=\"xn-money\">$1.1 billion<\/span>, surpassing an eye-catching milestone.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest reason for the two-month surge is the removal of in-person registration requirements in January. In fact, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3088220-1&amp;h=1589520427&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.playia.com%2Ffanduel-growth-post-ipr%2F&amp;a=FanDuel+reported+new+customer+registrations\" rel=\"nofollow\">FanDuel reported new customer registrations<\/a> multiplied by nearly a factor of seven from December to January, a direct result of the easing of registration requirements. <\/p>\n<p>Net receipts for sportsbooks did fall 32% month over month, to <span class=\"xn-money\">$7.7 million<\/span> in February from <span class=\"xn-money\">$11.3 million<\/span> in January. The month&#8217;s revenue still yielded <span class=\"xn-money\">$520,444<\/span> in state taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The Super Bowl brought in <span class=\"xn-money\">$16.2 million<\/span> in wagers, most of which came in February. Bookmakers also benefited from robust interest in men&#8217;s college basketball, particularly No. 5 Iowa and Drake, which sits just outside the Top 25.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When local teams enjoy strong seasons, as both <span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa<\/span> and Drake are, interest in betting on their games goes up. We see that in every regulated sports betting market in the U.S.,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Dustin Gouker<\/span>, analyst for PlayIA.com. &#8220;With March Madness on the horizon, more growth almost certainly lies ahead. And sportsbooks should get an even bigger boost if <span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa<\/span> or Drake can manage a prolonged run in the NCAA Tournament.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the month, online sports betting accounted for <span class=\"xn-money\">$143.6 million<\/span>, or 87.2%, of the state&#8217;s overall handle. <span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa&#8217;s<\/span> first online operator in <span class=\"xn-chron\">August 2019<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">William Hill<\/span> and its multiple license partners, retook the online market lead with <span class=\"xn-money\">$45.2 million<\/span> in online wagers in February. The Wild Rose license, which is anchored by DraftKings but includes BetRivers, took in <span class=\"xn-money\">$38.9 million<\/span> in online wagers and <span class=\"xn-money\">$1.5 million<\/span> net receipts.<\/p>\n<p>Retail betting generated <span class=\"xn-money\">$18.4 million<\/span>, down from <span class=\"xn-money\">$28.8 million<\/span>. Ameristar topped retailers with <span class=\"xn-money\">$4.5 million<\/span> in wagers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span class=\"xn-person\">William Hill<\/span> is still proving that early entry into a market is critically important,&#8221; Welman said. &#8220;But DraftKings and FanDuel are investing heavily in <span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa<\/span>, and with their brand recognition, they are seeing a rapid return on that investment.
