U.S. Conference of Mayors Responds to Census Bureau Ending Count Efforts Early

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) issued the following statement on the Census Bureau’s recent announcement that it will end all counting efforts for the 2020 census on September 30, a month sooner than previously announced:

Louisville (KY) Mayor Greg Fischer, USCM President
«The integrity of a complete and accurate U.S. Census is critical to the future of America – now, more than ever. The results of the count represent a major factor in determining the future of communities across the nation — from government representation to the allocation of more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and cities. Today, as our nation faces three major challenges – an economic recession, the COVID-19 pandemic and renewed calls for racial equity – it is unconscionable to pull back on the Constitution’s mandate for a complete and accurate count, jeopardizing our ability to deliver essential services to our communities for years to come.»

Atlanta (GA) Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Chair, USCM Census Task Force
«Shortening the window in which the nation can get a complete and accurate census count is a disaster waiting to happen. An inaccurate count will negatively impact the communities that have historically been most undercounted. These are the very communities that are in greatest need of the essential services that local municipalities provide. Renters, ethnic minorities, and households without internet access are best reached in person, a tactic already complicated by a raging pandemic. Rushing the deadline will most certainly widen the risk of undercounting these residents.»

More than $600,000 in Humanitarian Aid for Refugees Destroyed in Beirut Explosion

BALTIMORE, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Three 40-foot shipping containers filled with humanitarian aid that included thousands of handmade quilts and baby-care items were destroyed in the devastating August 4 explosions at the port of Beirut, Lebanon, the NGO Lutheran World Relief learned today.

The shipment, which also included school supplies for students and personal care kits, were destined for refugees living in Lebanon, principally from Syria and the Palestinian territories. The containers were part of a shipment to be distributed by Anera, an NGO and longtime Lutheran World Relief partner that provides humanitarian assistance and sustainable development to advance the well-being of refugees and other vulnerable communities in the Middle East.

The total value of the lost shipments was approximately $624,000.

The loss of more than 22,000 quilts, sewn by individuals and members of Lutheran congregations across the U.S., could mean a more bitter winter for thousands of refugees, said Melanie Gibbons, deputy director, outreach and engagement at Lutheran World Relief.

«Our quilts are made with love by those who painstakingly craft them, and they’re deeply appreciated by the people in distress who receive them, both for the warmth and the message of care they provide,» Gibbons said.

In addition, the shipping containers held 100 cartons of kits filled with school supplies, 300 cartons of personal care kits and 125 cartons of baby care kits.

«Our hearts are breaking as we grieve and pray with our brothers and sisters in Beirut,» said Daniel Speckhard, president & CEO of Lutheran World Relief. «We are committed to replacing the aid that was lost and are working on an emergency response to provide assistance as the city recovers and rebuilds.»

The explosions killed more than 150 people, injured more than 5,000 and left at least 300,000 without shelter. The blast was strong enough to register as the equivalent of a 3.3-magnitude earthquake and was felt as far as Cyprus, 150 miles away.

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Scholarship America, a nonprofit organization that manages scholarship and tuition assistance programs for different organizations, is providing notice to individuals impacted by the exposure of certain personal information.

On or about April 28, 2020, Scholarship America’s internal IT security processes detected suspicious activity within its email system which triggered security protocols. Upon discovery, Scholarship America took immediate action to shut down unauthorized access and remediate the problem. Scholarship America then brought in independent IT security and forensics experts to conduct a detailed systemwide review, which identified unauthorized access to some email accounts and included an extensive inspection of information stored in each impacted account.  The investigation confirmed that the impact of this incident was limited to certain Microsoft Office 365 email accounts, and that no other systems or servers within the Scholarship America IT network were impacted, including where student applications and program information are stored.

The data that was subject to unauthorized access was different in individual cases.  In general, the data contained a variety of elements such as names, mailing addresses, and telephone numbers, and, in some instances, it included protected information like Social Security numbers. Scholarship America has received no indication to-date that anyone’s sensitive information has been misused as a result of this incident.

Scholarship America takes the security of sensitive information that people entrust to it very seriously. Immediate actions were taken to secure the email system and ensure that any further suspicious activity was prevented. This included resetting passwords on all accounts system-wide as well as an activation of enhanced monitoring of IT systems. Scholarship America hired a qualified third-party IT forensic expert to conduct an exhaustive investigation of this matter. The problem has been remediated and the email and IT systems are operating securely. As part of its ongoing commitment to the security of sensitive information, Scholarship America is working to implement additional safeguards and security measures to enhance the privacy and security of information in company systems. In addition, the company is working with law enforcement and sharing information for their investigation.

Scholarship America is mailing letters to impacted individuals and is providing them with information about how to protect their credit and identity.  Scholarship America is also posting a notice of this incident on its website, and informing state regulators as required.  Anyone with questions about this incident is encouraged to visit the Scholarship America website for more information.

Scholarship America encourages affected individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud and to seek to protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss by regularly reviewing their financial account statements, credit reports, and explanations of benefits for suspicious activity.

STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION

The following information is provided in accordance with certain state legal requirements.

Monitor Your Accounts

Credit Reports. We encourage you to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing your account statements, explanation of benefits, and monitoring your free credit reports for suspicious activity and to detect errors. Under U.S. law, you are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call, toll-free, 1-877-322-8228. You may also contact the three major credit bureaus directly to request a free copy of your credit report.

Fraud Alerts. At no charge, you can also have these credit bureaus place a «fraud alert» on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it may also delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below:

Equifax
P.O. Box 105069 Atlanta, GA 30348 1-800-525-6285
www.equifax.com

Experian
P.O. Box 2002 Allen, TX 75013 1-888-397-3742
www.experian.com

TransUnion
P.O. Box 2000 Chester, PA 19016 1-800-680-7289
www.transunion.com

Security Freeze. You may also place a security freeze on your credit reports. A security freeze prohibits a credit bureau from releasing any information from a consumer’s credit report without the consumer’s written authorization. However, please be advised that placing a security freeze on your credit report may delay, interfere with, or prevent the timely approval of any requests you make for new loans, credit mortgages, employment, housing, or other services. If you have been a victim of identity theft and you provide the credit bureau with a valid police report, it cannot charge you to place, lift, or remove a security freeze. In all other cases, a credit bureau may charge you a fee to place, temporarily lift, or permanently remove a security freeze. Fees vary based on where you live, but commonly range from $3 to $15. You will need to place a security freeze separately with each of the three major credit bureaus listed above if you wish to place a freeze on all of your credit files. In order to request a security freeze, you will need to supply your full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, current address, all addresses for up to five previous years, email address, a copy of your state identification card or driver’s license, and a copy of a utility bill, bank or insurance statement, or other statement proving residence. To find out more on how to place a security freeze, you can use the following contact information:

Governor Ducey, Arizona Department of Education, Helios Education Foundation, and Arizona State University Launch Virtual Teacher Training Institute to Support Arizona Teachers and Students

PHOENIX, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — A new, $7.5 million partnership will help the state’s K-12 teachers deliver quality instruction and support for online and blended learning environments as Arizona grapples with the challenges of starting a school year during a global pandemic.

PHOENIX, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — A new, $7.5 million partnership will help the state’s K-12 teachers deliver quality instruction and support for online and blended learning environments as Arizona grapples with the challenges of starting a school year during a global pandemic.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman, Helios Education Foundation and Arizona State University today announced a collaboration to provide training and professional development for every teacher in Arizona.  With financial support  from the Governor’s office, the Arizona Department of Education and Helios, ASU Prep Digital’s Arizona Virtual Teacher Institute will provide both group and personal training to help Arizona teachers succeed in delivering online instruction.

Free training programs for schools and teachers begin August 11 with a three-day program, «Thriving as a Digital Teacher.» Topics are relevant to all digital learning tools and include best practices in online instruction, Web 2.0 tools, setting up a virtual instruction plan, pace charts, monitoring student progress, teaching time and stress management and more. Synchronous and asynchronous sessions will be available through the school year.

«Arizona teachers have demonstrated dedication and creativity in remaining present in the lives of their students through distance learning,» said Governor Doug Ducey. «With funding from the state and both the financial support and expertise of the Helios Education Foundation, we are putting one of the state’s strongest assets during this pandemic, Arizona State University, to work to support teachers in elementary schools and high schools from across the state.»

The training will get teachers up and running quickly and build their expertise incrementally. After-school sessions, available Monday through Thursday, along with a Saturday morning session, provide tremendous flexibility. Leadership tracks will support  school and district leaders in managing instructional programs and supporting teachers at a distance. Professional Learning Communities,  facilitated by ASU Prep Digital, offer an avenue for educators to work through specific challenges throughout the year.

«At present, it is unlikely that any Arizona school community will be in a position to begin the new school year in the traditional, in-person, on-campus setting,» said Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, Kathy Hoffman. «As schools look to begin the fall semester in a distance learning mode, they face different challenges. We want to give all schools and teachers access to the tools and training that they need. ASU Prep Digital already excels in this work and this new partnership will expand it.»

ASU Prep Digital, already in partnership with more than 150 schools across Arizona, offers a flexible menu of training options to maximize opportunities to participate in multiple sessions each month. School leadership can specify requirements for their staff, allow teachers to make their own choices, request special sessions for their school or offer a combination of required versus «choice» sessions. These trainings were thoughtfully designed to increase confidence in every teacher, regardless of digital competency level, as they continue to personalize education and raise academic achievement for every student – even in the uncertain school environment variables that will define the upcoming school year.

«We have always known that the quality of any ed-tech implementation depends on resourcing and preparing great teachers and leaders to steer the initiative effectively,» said Amy McGrath, Chief Operating Officer of ASU Prep Digital. «This training stems from years of work with districts across the globe in a wide variety of implementations. Over the years, we have identified common practices and principles around effective online and blended environments. We are eager to share what we’ve learned but also to welcome new teacher and leader insights into this growing pool of knowledge for future generations.»

Governor Ducey and Superintendent Hoffman shared the sentiment that the partnership would not have occurred without the engagement of the Helios Education Foundation, a philanthropic organization best known for its work in creating opportunities for success in postsecondary education.

«Arizona teachers are facing an unprecedented challenge but their determination, resilience, and commitment to their students is extraordinary,»  said Vince Roig, Founding Chairman, Helios Education Foundation. «This Institute will help equip teachers to provide instruction in a virtual environment while also ensuring all students – including those in rural and underserved communities – have access to high-quality educational opportunities.»

Thanks to the Helios investment and the state funding, training through the Arizona Virtual Teacher Institute will be provided at no cost to Arizona’s K–12 public schools and teachers. More information about ASU Prep Digital’s Arizona Virtual Teacher Institute can be found here.

MIT Sloan research shows a learning curve for consistency

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Learning curves show that experience improves average productivity. But is there a learning curve for consistency? With experience, does task performance become more consistent? Or is there still a wide variability in completion times, even if the times improve on average? In the first study to address the variance learning curve, MIT Sloan School of Management Prof. Jónas Oddur Jónasson and his colleague Hessam Bavafa of the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that experience significantly improves consistency. Further, they showed that the benefits of learning curves in service systems are «substantially underestimated» when consistency effects are ignored.

«It’s important to understand the impact of learning curves on consistency because the time it takes to complete a task is a signal of competency across most jobs. It also has practical implications for operational decisions such as staffing and scheduling,» says Jónasson.

He points to surgeries as an example. «The more often a surgeon performs a routine procedure, the faster the average completion time. But does each procedure take one hour to complete, or do the procedures take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours to complete? What is the spread around the average time? This is critical information not only for the patient, but also for the scheduling of operating rooms.»

In their study, the researchers collaborated with the London Ambulance Service to examine whether performance becomes more consistent due to a consistency learning curve. They looked at a decade of data to examine how experience affected the mean and variance of paramedic performance as they pick up patients and bring them to hospitals.

In line with current literature, they found that learning curves improve average productivity. Paramedics with lower experience improved by 1.7%-2.8% after experiencing 500 patient calls. In addition, they observed diminishing returns to increased experience.

More importantly, they found a «significant impact» of experience on performance consistency, which they call the variance learning curve. The study showed that the variance of paramedic performance was initially reduced by 3.7% – 8.7% with 500 additional jobs. After that, they found diminishing effects of increased experience on consistency.

«Our study revealed that if you don’t consider the impact of experience on performance variability, you would underestimate the benefits of the learning curve in service systems by as much as 4%,» says Jónasson. «This could impact staffing, scheduling, and service system performance.»

He adds, «This is a significant contribution to operations management research, which seeks to identify factors that contribute to productivity. Our study provides a fundamental insight about the operational learning curve. It also has practical implications because variability is a driver of system performance in most service systems and manufacturing systems.»

Jónasson and Bavafa are coauthors of «The variance learning curve,» which has been accepted for publication in Management Science.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Today, the American Primary Aluminum Association (APAA) is praising the Trump Administration following the reinstatement of Section 232 aluminum tariffs on Canadian imports of primary aluminum. Over the past year, Canadian aluminum imports have surged by over 95% in violation of Canada’s commitments to the United States. This surge accelerated in June, hitting 190,798 metric tons, a new high since Canada was granted an exemption to the Section 232 program.  Today’s action stops this surge from threatening more American jobs.

«The decisive action taken today by the Trump Administration will help save America’s primary aluminum industry which has been decimated by an unprecedented surge of Canadian primary aluminum imports,» said Mark Duffy, Chief Executive Officer, APAA. «The APAA and our member companies resoundingly applaud President Trump for his bold leadership to protect America’s national and economic security, save the U.S. primary aluminum industry, and put thousands of American aluminum workers first.»

Today’s decision by the Trump Administration levels the playing field for American workers and ensures the continued domestic production of a material essential to U.S. national and economic security interests.  Mr. Duffy continued, «As current events have shown, domestic production of essential raw materials is vital in times of crisis. Today’s action helps ensure that the U.S. aluminum supply chain that provides armor plating for our military vehicles, skins for our fighter jets and the backbone of our electrical grid will remain resilient for years to come.»

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Cuarentena (na na na) is the Quarantine Release by Indian Trap. Indian Trap is a hugely popular artist from iTrap Records who has released multiple hits featuring artists such as KresZenzia, Chris Scholar, Vivaswan, Tyeler Reign, and more. Cuarentena (na na na) is one of Indian Trap’s latest hit-on-hit releases shaking the music industry one after the other. It features Max Cortés and the Madhouse and is a hilariously relatable spanish trap song about the Quarantine issued by several states over the spread of COVID19 and the boredom of being stuck at home. The song’s timely release and massive social media push resulted in huge success. The song is on the Spotify top 50 lists all over the world, and its reach keeps growing.

Cuarentena(na na na) is amassing this success not only through the absolute dope-ness of this song, but also through a well-timed campaign. It recently released the paired lyrical video for Cuarentena (na na na) which you can check out on Youtube. Already trending over and over because of a popular dancing panda, this is one the freshest, most exciting music video released. We ask Indian Trap and Tejasvita Negi, the graphic designer and animator for most of the visual content released by the team about the success behind the Cuarentena (na na na) campaign.

Q: How did Cuarentena (na na na) come about?
Indian Trap: The song came about at the beginning of the quarantine when it first began hitting us how most of us are limited to what we can do during this time. So the intention of the song was to enjoy the quarantine and make it not only fun and productive as a process for us, but to bring this entertainment and fun to the people.

Q: Did you expect the success Cuarentena (na na na) has achieved?
Indian Trap: We actually had no idea it would do this well, and it is doing extremely well. It is in the Spotify top 50 charts all over the world and still growing. We wanted to do something different and interesting for the lyrical video. And that’s where Tejasvita comes in with her expertise.

Q:What was the process behind the music video?
Tejasvita: Well, we were looking into trends earlier, keeping up with what is most popular during the time. Initially there were two routes that the video was going to take – one purely relatable in boredom or just absolutely fun -But seeing how lasting the quarantine was going to be, and keeping in the theme of the song, to entertain, we decided to go the fun route. Initially we were wondering if we should go down the ‘Tiger King: Joe Exotic & Carole Baskin‘ trend, but really I realised something ever-loved should be the base of this whole campaign, which is why we chose to look for a theme around cute, funny animals. After that, it was just about scouring the internet for the best, funniest animal video.

Q:Why a focus on animals, Tejasvita?
Tejasvita: I work with a lot of companies, and when we decided on being a source of fun, encouragement, and excitement with this video, I knew we had to keep in theme by combining both dance videos and ridiculous animal videos. Animal videos draw in anyone. Everyone usually goes with people-focused content due to relatability. Through research, observation, and seeing my own content consumption during the quarantine I asked the question, ‘Why not animals?’ They are the most popular subject online, after babies.

Q:Did you predict the dancing panda trend?
Tejasvita: Well we really focused on the entire video being a balance, but the dancing Panda (who coincidentally was the star of the video for us) took off. We decided to capitalize on the dancing panda strength as well and based our campaign around its hilarity. It has been hugely popular with over 20 million impressions on facebook, growing day by day.

Q:Did you know you were going to be a part of something so big?
Tejasvita: It feels absolutely amazing to be a part of this and the Indian Trap team; I never in my wildest dreams imagined being a part of something so big. The Indian Trap sound is so unique, and my skillset works so well with it in combining my indian traditional perspective with the popular art media scene not only in the U.S. but all over the world – it feels almost serendipitous to be a part of it all. It only encourages me further to push my boundaries and explore content creation more freely and bringing it to a wide audience, Indian Trap being popular all over the world.

Q:What’s next for Indian Trap?

Market Drivers and Opportunities

Injury and death associated with vehicles remain an overwhelming challenge to society’s general health. In recent years, design safety improvements in the automotive sector have grown significantly, and yet little has been accomplished for safety in stationary vehicles. Once a car is turned off and parked under hot and humid condition, keeping its window glasses closed, the temperature inside the car increases rapidly. In the recent time, the hot air deaths of children’s have increased drastically, especially in the developed nations such as US and European countries. As the thermoregulatory system of the child is not well developed, this condition may lead to hyperthermia or heat stroke which can be fatal. Growing awareness regarding heatstroke deaths in cars is expected to fuel the growth of the child’s presence detection system market.

Reasons for the Increasing Demand for Child Presence Detection System

Across the world, too many children have been unintentionally left in vehicles or have got stuck into a vehicle on their own. Even the best of parents or carers can leave a child in a car unknowingly; and the result can cause serious injury or sometime death of the children’s left alone in the closed car. Vehicular hyperthermia misfortunes change the lives of parents, families, and communities forever. Based on safety organization Kids and Cars reporting, approximately 39 children die on average each year due to vehicle trapping worldwide. The data shows the severity of the problem and need to develop a system for the same. Automobile manufacturers and technology providers have joined hand to develop a system that senses the presence of a child and alert the parents of the child left along in the car. If no one attends the child, the system will make a call to parents and emergency personnel. Regulatory authorities around the world have acknowledged the need for technological solutions that can help avoid these kinds of incidents by offering child presence identification.

Government and Stakeholder Initiatives

Each year, an undisclosed number of young children die of hyperthermia from being trapped in parked motor vehicles worldwide. European and US safety regulators are considering mandating child presence detection systems to avoid the deaths of unattended children in hot cars. Safety regulators and lawmakers have warned of the dangers of leaving children and infants in hot cars, further heighten awareness about the danger’s children face in and around motor vehicles. Stakeholders believe the solution to these preventable tragedies is a combination of awareness and technology. They want all cars to come fitted with a device that warns a driver if a child is left in the car. The Hot Cars Act was recently implemented in the United States that would help to prevent children from being needlessly injured or killed when left alone in vehicles.
