NEW YORK, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) announced that it is expanding its virtual memory screening offerings to accommodate the high demand for the service.  Screenings will now be offered every Monday and Wednesday from 10 am to 4 pm (ET) and every Friday from 10 am to 2 pm (ET).  Appointments can be scheduled by calling AFA at 866-232-8484.

AFA started providing virtual memory screenings through its National Memory Screening Program on July 8th.  Screenings are conducted one-on-one through secure videoconference technology in real-time.  The program is free and open to everyone: there are no minimum age or insurance requirements.  All that’s needed is a phone, computer, tablet or any other device with a webcam and Internet capability.  Hundreds of people have already been screened.

«The response to our virtual memory screenings has been tremendous,» said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO.  «Memory screenings are an important part of a good health and wellness routine for everyone.  At a time when many families are still at home due to COVID-19, this program allows individuals to get screened without having to travel anywhere.  We’re excited to see so many people taking advantage of this program and look forward to serving even more through our expanded schedule.»

Memory screenings are simple, quick and noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other intellectual functions.  The memory screening takes approximately 10-15 minutes and is confidential.  Memory screenings are similar to other routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol and skin checks.

Results are not a diagnosis, but a memory screening can suggest if someone should see a physician for a full evaluation. Early detection is important because it can enable the person to begin medications sooner, participate in a clinical trial and take a more active role in developing their care plan.

Anyone wishing to get a free memory screening should call AFA at 866-232-8484 to schedule an appointment.  Appointments are required and scheduled on a first-come, first served basis.

For more information about memory screenings, Alzheimer’s disease or support services available to help families affected by Alzheimer’s, visit AFA’s website at www.alzfdn.org or call AFA’s Helpline at 866-232-8484.

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) utilities continue restoration efforts for customers of Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) who lost power as a result of Tropical Storm Isaias. Service has been restored to more than 785,200 JCP&L customers – more than 99% of the 788,000 customers impacted by the storm. All customers in both the Northern and Central Regions are expected to be restored by midnight tonight.

At this stage in the restoration effort, utility crews are addressing many localized issues and restoring individual customers. This requires crews to travel to individual locations to restore about 2,800 JCP&L customers who remain without power. This is the most time-consuming, labor intensive and complex part of service restoration.

If your neighbor’s power is on and yours is not, the problem may be isolated to your individual service. Customers who are without power are encouraged to call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) to report their outage or click the «Report Outage» link on www.firstenergycorp.com. Customers can also use two-way text messaging to report outages, request updates on restoration efforts, and make other inquiries about their electric accounts. More information about these communications tools is available online at www.firstenergycorp.com/connect.

Utility crews have replaced more than 53 miles of wire, repaired or replaced more than 550 poles and 2,500 cross arms, and worked through more than 700 closed roads to repair service. In addition, JCP&L plans to perform post-storm inspections across its 13-county service area to identify additional damage to wire, cross arms, insulators and other equipment that may need to be addressed.

To safeguard the health and safety of FirstEnergy employees, contractors and the public, please respect social distancing protocols as utility personnel work around the clock to restore all power outages caused by Tropical Storm Isaias.

More Information
During severe weather, customers who are without power are encouraged to call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) to report their outage or click the «Report Outage» link on www.firstenergycorp.com. Customers should immediately report downed wires to their utility or their local police or fire department. Customers should never go near a downed power line, even if they think it is no longer carrying electricity. Extra caution should be exercised in areas where downed wires may be tangled in downed tree branches or other debris.

  • Water and Ice Locations: Water and ice are available to customers without service due to the storm. For a list of locations, visit www.firstenergycorp.com/storminfo and click on «water and ice locations.»

  • Customer Generators: Emergency power generators offer an option for customers needing or wanting uninterrupted service. However, to ensure the safety of the home’s occupants as well as that of utility company employees who may be working on power lines in the area, the proper generator should be selected and installed by a qualified electrician. When operating a generator, the power coming into the home should always be disconnected. Otherwise, power from the generator could be sent back onto the utility lines, creating a hazardous situation for utility workers.

For updated information on the company’s current outages, FirstEnergy’s storm restoration process and tips for staying safe, visit the 24/7 Power Center at www.firstenergycorp.com/outages.

California Organic Waste Recyclers: Senate Committee to Vote on Bill to End Popular California Recycling Program

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Each week, a specialized hauling truck arrives at San Diego’s popular AleSmith Brewery to pick up spent grain and other recovered wasted food which will later be recycled by local ranchers as livestock feed.

This recycling program is repeated thousands of times each week at California grocery stores, restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, bakeries and more which either donate or are paid for the waste.  In fact, according to the Clarity and Leadership for Environmental Awareness and Research Center at UC Davis, more than 5.7 million tons of vegetable and fruit trimmings, egg shells, avocado pits, spent grain, coffee grounds and more are recovered annually in California and «upcycled» as highly-nutritious livestock feed instead of dumping it in our state’s overburdened landfills.

«The current recycling program works so well and provides so many benefits to the people and the environment in California, there simply is no reason for the State Legislature to change the rules and destroy an effective program,» said Peter Zien, owner and CEO of AleSmith Brewery.  He added, «Our business is a big proponent of doing everything we can to reduce our environmental footprint, but AB 2959 does nothing to help the environment while harming small businesses like ours.»

This week the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, will vote on Assembly Bill 2959 which could have devastating impacts on California’s climate goals by essentially eliminating this effective recycling program. The bill would impose a one-size-fits-all approach to disposing of organic waste generated by households and all types of businesses. It would allow that material to be removed only by a designated franchise holder – the large trash-removal firms that are contracted with local municipalities – where it would be taken to a composting facility.

However, California does not have the infrastructure in place to allow for more organic material to be processed at existing composting facilities and digestors.  State budget analysts estimate it will cost more than $22 billion to construct the necessary infrastructure to meet the requirements of AB 2959.  That $22 billion will be financed by new fees charged to businesses that generate food waste by the large waste haulers. This would increase the cost of doing business for restaurants, grocery stores and other businesses already struggling with the effects of the COVID-19 crisis.

«This bill is a big step backward for California.  It would have a devastating impact on California’s climate goals while increasing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions,» said Dr. Frank Mitloehner, professor and Air Quality EC Specialist and Director of the University’s CLEAR Center.  He added, «Currently, about 18% of materials entering California landfills is wasted food material.  Trashing an efficient recycling program for AB 2959 will likely create new environmental problems and further contribute to the vast food waste cycle that California communities must end.  AB 2959 needs to be dumped.»

Another major problem with AB 2959 is that when organic waste decomposes it releases methane as part of the process which increases GHG emissions.  However, when used as animal feed, that same organic waste is nearly completely disposed of when eaten by cows and other livestock.  For example, the cow’s rumen, or stomach, can break down all the materials in the recovered waste and upcycle them into edible protein in the form of dairy products and beef for millions of people.

«I am regularly contacted by operators of large kitchens at local casinos, convention centers and hotels asking if I can take more recovered food waste to feed my dairy cattle.  This recycling is likely to end if AB 2959 passes,» said Frank Konyn, of Konyn Dairy in Escondido, and a leader in recycling wasted food.  He added, «If this bill excludes animal agriculture from recovering and recycling wasted food, it is contrary to the goals of ‘highest use’ recycling as mandated by both the federal government and CalEPA and must be stopped.  This is not the environmental leadership Californians expect from our elected officials.»

The bill is opposed by the California Restaurant Association, the California Grocers Association, the California Retailers Association, the California Farm Bureau Federation, the California Cattlemen Association, the California Grain and Feed Association, the Western United Dairymen and the California Advanced Biofuels Association.

LINCOLN, Neb., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — As a recent market data report from Sandhills Global illustrates, the fair market value of used equipment can drastically change from month to month. For example, used earth-moving equipment values took a precipitous year-over-year dip from April-June 2019 to April-June 2020, but by July 2020, earth-moving equipment values had returned to nearly what Sandhills observed during July 2019. The heavy-duty truck market (including both sleepers and days cabs) also showed recovery this July, correlating strongly to a large decrease in used inventory.

Chart Takeaways
The accompanying truck industry charts illustrate emerging market trends for used heavy-duty sleepers and day cabs. (Note that the «Class 8: US Used Market» chart covers only sleeper trucks on TruckPaper.com, with both inventory levels and used values.) Trends to note include:

  • Decreasing inventory in used heavy-duty sleepers and day cabs has helped to increase average used values, highlighted by a recent increase to an average value of $42,791.
  • Despite a YOY average value change of -12.78%, July’s YOY percentage change was a marked improvement over the YOY heavy-duty truck marks for June (-15.72%) and May (-16.38%).

Summary:
Driven by a combination of continued and ongoing global and regional development pressures for buildings, facilities and infrastructure, along with increasingly stringent regulations, a growing adherence to such regulations globally and climate-related effects that are causing erosion-related effects to become more severe in many regions globally, global markets for erosion control technologies and related systems are on the uptick. In fact, they have been—at least from a global perspective—for many years now.

Construction contractors and other site managers are increasingly deploying and required to invest in erosion control technologies. The result has been a net benefit to erosion, resulting in an
incremental reduction in erosion and sedimentation downstream of such work sites, along with a concurrent uptick in markets.

Interestingly, in recent years, markets for erosion control technologies have become more heavily influenced by globally distant suppliers.A recent increase and influx in erosion control technologies manufactured in Asia-Pacific, for example, has resulted in regional and local changes to markets in North America and Europe.

New, cheaper and readily available technologies—particularly with respect to degradable and bio-friendly technologies—are on the rise as imports to these regions. Such imports compete with increasing strength against what was once an almost exclusively regional to local supplier market. In this respect, the erosion control market has been one of the later to incur impacts
surrounding ongoing globalization.

However, some of these changes, while driving increased competition and more available technologies, are also driving market expansion. As technologies that were once limited in application continue to grow, new market niches are opened, and potential for higher value markets also increases.

Structural and fully integrated best management practices, such as those deployed under LID systems, also provide a key point of interest in the market, as they may be used in tandem with or even, in some cases, in competition against other types of erosion control. This is especially relevant to geotextiles, which can be used to provide longer-term stabilization.

The key objectives of this report are to provide accurate market evaluations for each of the global erosion control technologies and systems considered in this study. This study targets markets associated with sustainable erosion control—that is, with a strong focus on those erosion control technologies that reduce and manage the erosion process, while minimizing and avoiding environmental damage to the extent possible. Market breakdowns and regional as well as national splits are provided for eight technology categories, as follows –
– Erosion control blankets.
– Jute.
– Blown straw.
– Hydromulch.
– Hydroseed.
– Wattles and filter Socks.
– Degradable geotextiles.
– Low-impact development (LID) technologies.

The opportunity is the NGAUS Virtual 5K, which is open to all. Cost is $30, with proceeds going to the National Guard Educational Foundation, which tells all 384 years of the Guard story. Among its programs is the National Guard Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Registered participants will set their own 3.1-mile course and run or walk it between Aug. 24 and Aug. 30. Each will receive a commemorative medal in the mail. Postage is included in the registration fee.

More information and registration is available at https://runsignup.com/NGAUSvirtual5k. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Aug. 16.

«Our annual fun run is normally an event at our conference,» said retired Brig. Gen. J. Roy Robinson, the NGAUS and NGEF president. «We’re going virtual this year, so we opened the run to anyone who would like to support our efforts to tell the Guard story.»

The Guard’s 384th year is one of its most unique. Thousands of Guard soldiers and airmen across every state, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia have been responding to the coronavirus pandemic since March.

They have helped operate drive-through testing centers, delivered food and protective equipment, disinfected nursing homes, and even staffed call centers to help the jobless file for unemployment benefits.

Meanwhile, thousands of other Guardsmen have deployed overseas or responded to civil unrest. In early June, more than 120,000 Guardsmen were on duty at home or abroad.

NGAUS is conducting the virtual 5K in conjunction with its annual conference, which will be livestreamed from Washington, D.C., Aug. 28-29. Speakers include service chiefs and the new senior leaders of the National Guard Bureau.

More conference details are available at www.ngaus.org/events/142nd-general-conference.

About NGAUS: The association includes nearly 45,000 current or former Guard officers. It was created in 1878 to provide unified National Guard representation in Washington. In their first productive meeting after Reconstruction, militia officers from the North and South formed the association with the goal of obtaining better equipment and training by educating Congress on Guard requirements. Today, 142 years later, NGAUS has the same mission.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Over the past several months, the United States and the rest of the world find themselves in the midst of unexpected and unwanted crises. Whether it is racial violence, political change or inaction, economic hardship or a crippling pandemic, people of faith are looking for ways to respond to what is happening in their lives, families, and communities.

«Rally: Communal Prayers for Lovers of Jesus and Justice» speaks to readers with great faith, those seeking deeper faith, people new to prayer, or anyone looking for an authentic way to pray together. It reminds readers that they can take action in the face of fear, evil, and injustice.

Compiled and edited by Britney Winn Lee, «Rally» was released by Fresh Air Books on August 1. Lee is the director of a community arts program in Shreveport, Louisiana. An artist and word-wielder since childhood, Lee is the author of «Deconstructed Do-Gooder: A Memoir About Learning Mercy the Hard Way» and «The Boy with Big, Big Feelings.» She led a team of more than 45 writers to contribute to this collection of reflections with call-and-response prayers meant to be prayed as a group.

«Rally» contains more than 50 litanies (prayers) for loving our neighbors, our bodies, for listening to one another, for those who have been wounded by the church, victims, perpetrators, and many others. In this resource, readers will find prayers that evoke hope and connection, laments about destruction of the earth, and pleas for loving alike though we don’t think alike.

Contributors include Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, D. L. Mayfield, Onleilove Chika Alston, Delonte Harrod, Patrice Gopo, Bruce Reyes-Chow, Rachel G. Hackenberg, and Michael T. McRay, among others.

Prayers in «Rally» spur people to draw courage from one another and take positive steps for change. The words of hope found in this book will motivate readers to gather (even if only virtually) and grieve, meditate, and organize for action.

«This is a prayer book for a revolution,» Shane Claiborne writes in the foreword of «Rally»—»a revolution of love and compassion and justice.»
