Proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Rule Jeopardizes Patient Care, Argues the Surgical Care Coalition

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for calendar year 2021 (CY2021) jeopardizes patient care, specifically surgical care. While the proposed rule takes steps to increase access to care through telehealth, it also has the potential to drastically reduce patients’ access to surgical care, just as many patients have delayed care due to COVD-19.

In the fee schedule announced by CMS, surgeons will see their Medicare payments cut by 9% for cardiac surgery, 8% for thoracic surgery, 7% for vascular surgery, 7% for general surgery, 7% for neurosurgery and 6% for ophthalmology for CY2021.

«We support steps to expand access to care, but this rule takes one step forward and several steps back by disregarding patients’ needs and the surgeons who care for them. The middle of a pandemic is no time for cuts to any form of health care, yet this proposed rule moves ahead as if nothing has changed. The health care system cannot absorb cuts of this magnitude,» said David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS, American College of Surgeons Executive Director. «The Surgical Care Coalition believes no physician should see payment cuts that will reduce patients’ access to care. This proposed rule would move forward with significant payment cuts that will only make the situation worse and harm patients.»

The proposed rule affirms, and for some surgical specialties increases, the cuts CMS announced last year, which are set to take effect January 1, 2021. These cuts will reduce payments to nearly all surgical specialties, including by as much as 9 percent for some surgeons. The policy was ill-informed and dangerous to patients even before the pandemic started but could be even more detrimental as our health care system continues to weaken under COVID-19.

To stop these cuts and preserve care for patients, Congress must act now. The Surgical Care Coalition is urging Congress to enact legislation to waive Medicare’s budget neutrality requirements for these E/M adjustments and to require CMS to apply the increased E/M adjustment to all 10- and 90-day global code values.

In a survey earlier this year, one-in-three private surgical practices stated that they are already at risk of closing permanently due to the financial strain of the COVID-19 crisis. In the same survey, it was found that nearly half of surgeons face more difficult financial decisions, and are responding by either cutting their own pay or paying employees in the face of declining revenues. This rule will likely force surgeons to take fewer Medicare patients leading to longer wait times and reduced access to care for older Americans.

About the Surgical Care Coalition
The Surgical Care Coalition advocates for access to quality surgical care for all Americans. The Surgical Care Coalition is comprised of 12 surgical professional associations that proudly represent more than 150,000 surgeons working across the country with a common goal of improving the quality of care, and quality of life, for all patients. The founding members have worked together for nearly three decades to promote sound policy solutions to the U.S. Congress and federal regulatory agencies to solve the biggest challenges in health care.

DALLAS, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Family-owned Dallas based metal fabrication shop, the NoContactKey has risen in popularity since the introduction of their one of a kind clean touch key. The NoContactKey is a no contact door opener, tool and stylus made of metal antimicrobial brass. To help parents and students heading back to school in-person feel more comfortable as they navigate a challenging learning environment during this pandemic, NoContactKey has expanded their product selection to include a child size version of their clean touch germ key, perfectly suited for children’s fingers.

Currently, the NoContactKey is the number one hygiene tool supplying clients throughout the country with their no touch hand tools. The demand from consumers for additional PPE so that they may feel safe handling daily tasks has resulted in NoContactKey’s shop processing thousands of orders a day and becoming a large-scale production allowing them to pivot quickly to better serve teachers, students and schools.

«Every parent wants to be assured that the school their children will attend this fall is taking serious precautions against the spread of COVID-19,» said Don Douglas, founder of NoContactKey. «Despite schools’ major efforts towards cleanliness and social distancing, community spread of the virus is still a prevalent reality. That is why we feel every child and teacher should have their own NoContact Key as an extra precaution to reduce the number of germy shared surfaces they are exposed to throughout the day.»

https://www.nocontactkey.com/product/nocontactkey-for-kids/

Parents, teachers and students can feel safer and stay healthier by explaining to the kids how to use the NoContactKey and reinforcing the importance of trying to avoid directly touching shared surfaces.

  • With the help of a no contact germ tool like the NoContactKey, your children can enter a school without worrying about touching door knobs or pressing buttons.
  • A child can use the brass door opener keychain hook and the weight of a door is not a factor but rather the amount of resistance the door closer provides. The door closer is the device mounted at the top of the door and is responsible for controlling how much effort is required to open the door. If a door closer resistance is adjusted to the ADA standard of 5 pounds or less, then the user will be able to easily open the door using the NoContactKey.
  • Keeping a NoContactKey easily accessible allows your children to avoid using their hands to press water fountain buttons, touch school locker handles, push elevator buttons, lower toilet handles, etc.
  • The NoContactKey also serves as a high-quality stylus which can be used on many touch screen learning devices including iPad tablets.

The NoContactKey germ utility tool can be the added assurance parents need for their children to head back to school safely. When it comes to procuring PPE for the coming year, Parent Teacher Associations and school administrators can provide additional peace of mind to families and staff by providing the best no touch tool made from antimicrobial brass. by not touching shared surfaces. Made from antimicrobial brass, it is the best no touch tool available!

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — National Salmonella Lawyer Jory Lange and prominent Portland Consumer Protection Attorney David Sugerman filed the first federal lawsuit in the Oregon Salmonella onion outbreak.  This is the first federal lawsuit filed in the United States, and the first lawsuit filed in Oregon in the Salmonella onion outbreak. 71 people in Oregon have contracted Salmonella in an outbreak that has sickened at least 396 people in the United States and 120 people in Canada.  At least 76 people have been hospitalized in the United States and Canada.

More Salmonella Lawsuits are likely to follow, says The Lange Law Firm, PLLC. «The scary thing about this outbreak is, as a consumer, there’s nothing you can do to tell whether the onions that you are buying are safe. You can’t taste, smell, or see Salmonella. Onions that are contaminated with Salmonella may look, smell, and taste just like any other onions. This is why it’s critical that companies who make and sell our food, especially ready-to-eat foods like onions, ensure the food is safe before they sell it,» said national Salmonella food poisoning lawyer Jory Lange

Thompson International Recalls Onions

Thompson International recalled onions on July 31, 2020.  The recalled onions include all red onions, white onions, yellow onions, and sweet yellow onions shipped by Thompson International from May 1 to August 1, 2020.  The onions were sold under multiple different brand names, including: Thompson International, Thompson Premium, Kroger, Food Lion, Utah Onions, Onions 52, Hartley’s Best, Imperial Fresh, Majestic, Tender Loving Care, and El Competidor.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Michelson Medical Research Foundation and the Human Vaccines Project have announced the winners of the 2020 Michelson Prizes for Human Immunology and Vaccine Research. The awards support the research of two early-career investigators who are advancing human immunology, vaccine discovery, and immunotherapy across major global diseases.

This year’s recipients are Danika Hill, Research Fellow at Monash University, and Michael Birnbaum, Assistant Professor at MIT. They will each receive unrestricted grants of $150,000.

2020 will be remembered as the year the world endured an unprecedented public health crisis with vast implications for the entire global community. The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the critical need for unorthodox research in immunology and vaccine discovery. Daring young pathfinders need partnerships with those who believe in their potential. That is why the Michelson Medical Research Foundation and the Human Vaccines Project engage in an annual international search to identify and support the most promising projects from young investigators.

«Our current system is rigged, making it nearly impossible for a young researcher to get funding,» says Dr. Gary Michelson, founder, and co-chair of the Michelson Medical Research Foundation. «Even the head of the NIH cites the advancing age at which investigators receive their first NIH grant as ‘the greatest problem facing U.S. science.’ History shows that profound breakthroughs are made by researchers under age 35. We must invest in next-generation scientists who have demonstrated excellence in their field by combining disruptive thinking with a novel scientific approach. My wife Alya and I are proud to help Dr. Hill and Dr. Birnbaum pursue their revolutionary ideas.»

«We need courage, passion, and creativity to achieve true progress in science. It inspires me to see young researchers like Dr. Hill and Dr. Birnbaum display these strengths with their innovative proposals,» says Dr. Wayne Koff, CEO of the Human Vaccine Project. «Only by thinking beyond conventions, we will be able to transform the future of human health. I look forward to seeing how the research of our 2020 Michelson Prize winners will contribute to the Human Vaccine Project’s grand vision of decoding the human immune system.»

About the winners:

Danika Hill, Research Fellow, Department of Immunology and Pathology, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Danika Hill received the Michelson Prize 2020 for: «Exploiting T Follicular Helper Cells as an Innovative Tool to Discover Targets for Long-Lived Humoral Immunity.»

Dr. Hill aims to find specific antigens responsible for long-lived humoral immunity. With the help of a human Strep A challenge model, she will identify T cell receptor types in circulating T Follicular helper cells, which will be used to engineer reporter cell lines to uncover novel vaccine candidates. Dr. Hill uses an innovative approach with clear trans-disease applicability to identify antigens for vaccines or immunotherapy for various infectious diseases, cancer, and autoimmunity.

«The Michelson Prize comes at a critical point in my career,» says Dr. Hill. «It will enable me to peruse my own research directions and enable me to follow-up on some exciting discoveries that I’ve made. With the prize, I’ll be able to apply some cutting-edge techniques to study hundreds of thousands of cells in molecular detail. And it’s my hope that with this project we can better understand what to pinpoint when we design vaccines to generate these T follicular helper cells that are so essential for good vaccine responses.»

Michael Birnbaum, Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Engineering, MIT, Cambridge, Mass.

Michael Birnbaum received the Michelson Prize 2020 for: «Repertoire-Scale Determination of T Cell Recognition and Cross-Reactivity to HIV via pMHC Lentiviral Display»

Dr. Birnbaum strives to expedite and perfect the process of vaccine antigen selection. He is using HIV «elite controllers,» who can safely go long periods without treatment, to identify which antigens their immune system successfully targets. By working with a lentiviral display, he can identify specific antigens, which might be ideal targets for use in HIV vaccines. Dr. Birnbaum’s method is applied for HIV but can easily be expanded to various other diseases, including infectious diseases, cancer, and autoimmunity.

«The Michelson Prize is funding our development and deployment of a technology that would supercharge our ability to define what T cells recognize during the course of HIV infection. The support provided by this award will let us work faster than would be possible otherwise. We will be trying many of our best ideas at once to press this technology into service, in a time where better tools to study infectious disease are clearly needed,» Dr. Birnbaum explains.

The Michelson Prize 2020 winners were selected from more than two hundred applicants from around the world. Hill and Birnbaum will receive their awards in an open webinar on August 13, 2020, at 9 a.m. EDT. This special two-hour event connects the experts of today with the leaders of tomorrow: Pulitzer Prize winner Laurie Garrett will introduce the winners and preside over the presentation of awards. After the award presentation, Harvard Professor Dr. Dan Barouch will present the latest data set published in Nature with his insights on the pandemic in the Global COVID Lab Meeting, where the Human Vaccines Project connects experts in the field to discuss the latest COVID-19 data. Everybody is welcome to join the event. Register for the webinar here.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Organic Consumers Association (OCA) filed suit against Mowi USA and Mowi Ducktrap for deceptive marketing and advertising of smoked Atlantic salmon products sold under the Ducktrap River of Maine brand.

The action was filed by Richman Law Group on behalf of OCA, in D.C. Superior Court under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act.

«Most consumers choosing a smoked Atlantic salmon product with the words ‘All Natural’ on the package would be surprised to learn that that salmon was raised in a crowded pen where it was treated with artificial chemicals, including pesticides and medically important antibiotics,» said OCA International Director, Ronnie Cummins.

«In survey after survey, consumers say they believe a product labeled ‘all natural’ was produced without synthetic chemicals, especially pesticides and antibiotics, and that they are willing to pay more for products labeled ‘natural’,» Cummins said. «Ducktrap River of Maine targets those consumers, even though the company’s practices are not consistent with consumer expectations.»

In fact, consumers have ranked the «minimal use of hormones and drugs,» «no pollution to the environment» and «respect of fish welfare» as three of the four most important elements of sustainable aquaculture.

In addition to false «All Natural» and «100% All Natural» packaging and marketing claims, Mowi misleads consumers by claiming its farmed salmon is «sustainably sourced,» «environmentally sustainable» and «eco-friendly,» suggesting to consumers that the products are made from salmon sourced in accordance with higher environmental and animal welfare standards.

Conditions at Mowi facilities in Scotland have been rated by animal charity OneKind as some of the industry’s worst due to mortality rates, parasite infestations, stress levels, overstocking, genetic deformities and escapes, among other factors.  Overall, the analysis ranked Mowi as the second-worst out of eight farmed fish producers on animal welfare.

Mowi also misleadingly claims that Ducktrap products are «from Maine» and «from the coast of Maine,» when in fact the products are made from salmon sourced from industrial salmon farms outside the U.S.

DALLAS, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — DataBank, a leading provider of enterprise-class colocation, connectivity, and managed services, announces today that it has reached the 100 percent renewable energy mark at one of its Minneapolis, MN, data centers, MSP2. The milestone was reached by entering into an agreement with utility provider Dakota Electric Association to purchase 100% renewable energy to meet all of MSP2’s 6MW of critical IT load for the next five years. The renewable power is being provided through Dakota Electric’s Wellspring program, which will procure the power from clean wind sources provided by Great River Energy.

DataBank had already begun preparing to offset a majority of MSP2’s power requirements when it was approached by its largest customer in the data center, a F1000 enterprise software company. As part of its own CSR initiative, the customer had the goal of reducing its environmental impact across the company, and asked DataBank if it was possible to use renewable sources for all its power consumption in MSP2. DataBank then made the decision to purchase enough green power from Dakota Electric to cover 100% of MSP2’s needs. Now that customer, and all other MSP2 customers, will be powered by 100% renewable wind energy.

For DataBank, this represents the third such milestone – as both of its IND1 and IND2 data centers in Indianapolis are powered by 100% renewable energy sources – and fits into DataBank’s larger commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and reducing environmental impact across its facilities.

Last year, U.S. based data centers used more than 90 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, representing up to three percent of all U.S. electricity consumed, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.  The collaboration between DataBank and Dakota Electric reduces the carbon footprint of a significant data center in the Minneapolis market.

«Green energy and sustainability are critical aspects of DataBank’s Data Center Evolved™ strategy,» states Kevin Ooley, DataBank’s President and CFO. «This milestone reached at our Minneapolis data center is a major step toward enhanced energy efficiency across DataBank’s portfolio and a further example of how we enhance the data center experience for our customers.»

«Data centers need tremendous amounts of reliable and cost-effective electricity to power their servers, storage equipment, back-ups and power cooling infrastructure,» said Greg Miller, Dakota Electric’s president and CEO. «We’re excited to have DataBank in our Wellspring program and look forward to providing them with 100% renewable energy to meet their green initiative goals.»

LEXINGTON, Massachusetts, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Signiant Inc, today announced, that it has been issued patent number 10,735,516 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its invention titled «Cloud-Based Authority To Enhance Point-To-Point Data Transfer With Machine Learning.» The patent describes methods and systems that incorporate machine learning to evaluate anonymized historical transfer information collected by its SaaS products.  This history is used as training data to build a model that predicts the fastest possible way to move or access media. With this patent, Signiant expands its leadership in SaaS-based solutions for the global exchange of high value media assets.

Signiant’s intelligent transport chooses the optimal number of parallel transport streams and selects either standard TCP or Signiant’s proprietary UDP-based acceleration protocol based on a variety of inputs including current and historical network conditions, available compute, storage type and the characteristics of the data set. The new architecture is capable of multiple Gbps transfer speeds and is already deployed in Signiant’s SDCX (Software-Defined Content Exchange) SaaS platform for transfers between public and/or private cloud services and/or storage. The platform is capable of working with any size file, data sets with an unlimited number of files as well as growing files and streams.

«When early transfer tests showed speeds greater than 10 Gbps using settings derived through machine learning that weren’t intuitive or obvious, we knew we were onto something disruptive,» said Signiant CTO, Ian Hamilton. «As networks evolve and increase in bandwidth, Signiant’s transport becomes even more valuable and is now capable of speeds of 10s of Gbps. Standard transfer tools simply aren’t designed to take advantage of available bandwidth and so with today’s fatter pipes, this new architecture becomes even more critical as datasets get bigger and workflows are increasingly globally distributed.»

In order to take full advantage of available bandwidth, Signiant’s machine learning algorithm examines past history and optimally configures application-level and transport-level parameters for both file and live media transfers. Not only does this ensure the best result without expensive and error prone manual tuning and tooling, but results improve over time as the system learns. In addition to Signiant’s patent-pending intelligent transport, Signiant’s core UDP-acceleration protocol offers distinct advantages. Signiant isolates different sources of congestion by looking at latency and packet loss, and also by constantly examining the rate of change in these observations. As such it can differentiate between edge and core network congestion and react accordingly.

Hamilton added, «We’re in a world where new network technologies are being deployed for different use cases and the storage landscape has become far more complex. With all these enhancements in infrastructure technology, Signiant’s unique SDCX SaaS platform acts as an important abstraction layer to adapt any type of IP network for the modern media enterprise. Content can be anywhere within a global mesh of SDCX-enabled storage and services, and our platform will provide fast seamless location-independent access to media assets for people and systems.»

About Signiant:

Signiant’s SDCX (Software-Defined Content Exchange) SaaS platform is relied upon by media companies of all sizes to move and access petabytes of high value content every day with speed, reliability and security. While file acceleration remains central to Signiant, its platform has evolved to include media-specific intelligence that solve challenges Beyond Fast File Movement. Signiant’s SaaS platform now connects more than 25,000 media companies from across the globe.  For more information, please visit http://www.signiant.com. She then served for nearly 20 years as the GIS coordinator for Minnesota, establishing and supporting enterprise geospatial services throughout the state. As part of her emergency response duties as GIS coordinator, Carroll forged a strong relationship with Google. This led to an additional, parallel position managing Google data quality.

For the last few years, Carroll has provided tailored geospatial business intelligence for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Forest Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and multiple industry leaders. She has created geospatial datasets in support of coastal restoration, acquired and processed lidar to refine floodplain models, and helped expand monitoring capacity for coastal regions through geospatial automation.

Carroll said the high-quality lidar data being collected for the USGS 3D Elevation Program supports the National Hydrography Dataset and addresses the nation’s pressing need for water resources management.

«These USGS programs enable the expansion of an accurate hydrographic data footprint across the country for use in multiple critical applications,» Carroll said. «It takes this kind of large-scale vision to solve large-scale problems. I am fortunate to have developed a keen eye for quality assurance and an understanding of how geospatial data can be used in new and expanding ways.»

Carroll, who has experience in both collecting and receiving geospatial data, said she appreciates that Woolpert shares her high standards and innovative outlook. But she said she joined the firm because of its people.

«When I was a Woolpert client, communication was always clear, the product was of great quality, and the people I worked with were honest and had integrity,» Carroll said. «Woolpert was my first and only choice when deciding to take the next step in my career.»

Woolpert Vice President and Maritime Market Director John Gerhard said Carroll is an outstanding addition to the market and the firm.

«Shelly’s extensive geospatial experience at the state and federal level, along with her core value of providing high-quality data, mirrors that of Woolpert—and she’s even a UAS pilot,» Gerhard said. «We have always loved working with Shelly, and now we are very proud to welcome her to Woolpert.»

While Pets Suffer Separation Anxiety as Their Humans Return to Work, a New Pet Safety Product Helps Humans Resolve Their Own Anxieties

DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ —  thePetmosphere.com, an online source for unique pet items, has launched a new pet safety product that brings to life ‘In Case of Emergency’ planning for pets, just in time to help pet parents anxiously returning to the workplace.

As people emerge from lockdown and return to work, many find their pets at home suffering from classic separation anxiety. While pets sulk as their humans return to work, pet parents also experience their own anxieties over pets left home alone.  The Pet Parent Alert Kit has been launched just in time to help them manage these anxieties.

When a pet parent leaves a pet at home to go to work (or run an errand, go to dinner, etc.), they assume their return will be timely. But what if it isn’t? What if suddenly they couldn’t return home due to an accident or emergency? Without a proper plan in place, pets that rely on them could be abruptly left without care.

While an emergency interrupting our daily routine seems improbable, vehicle accident statistics from Progressive Insurance seem to indicate otherwise:

  • 52 percent occur within 5 miles of a person’s home
  • 77 percent occur within 15 miles of a person’s home

A car accident that sends a pet parent to the hospital in an incapacitated state could result in pets at home going without care for an indefinite period of time.  Having an emergency plan in place ahead of an emergency, via The Pet Parent Alert Kit, alleviates concern for such a situation.

«As a veterinarian, I find that pet owners consider their beloved animals to be members of the family. Their critters are loyal and adored companions. Caring for our wonderful creatures is a top priority. But what happens to them if we are in an accident or have a health crisis that lands us in the hospital? The Pet Parent Alert Kit offers peace of mind to animal lovers by providing notification to medical staff, law enforcement or emergency response teams that your animal needs care. I highly recommend this simple-to-use kit that contains everything you need to make sure your fur babies get the vital care they need when you can’t be there.» – Hannah Smith, DVM (DACT candidate), Gainesville, FL

The kit is comprised of several components, including key ring tags and brightly colored wearables that alert first responders to the existence of pets at home, directing them to emergency contact information stored in the wallet. The ICE contact can be notified of the situation immediately and can take over a pet’s care quickly.  Pets never need to miss a next meal, vital medication or a reassuring hug from a human caretaker.

The kit also provides a ‘Please Rescue My Pets’ home window sticker for fire/flood emergencies.  It notifies firemen or other responders that pets are in the home and need to be found and rescued before leaving the site. This is especially important to have visible during hurricane season on the coast and fire season in the west.

Two versions of the kit are available and priced from $19.95 to $24.95, including shipping. More kit detail is available here:
