UNION, N.J., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Bed Bath & Beyond® the experts on college living, launches College from Home, a shopping experience dedicated to helping parents and college students redesign their childhood bedrooms as remote learning spaces for the fall semester. As the destination for college, Bed Bath & Beyond will provide expert tips for creating remote learning spaces with the new College from Home website section. In partnership with sister brand Decorist, an online interior design service, the College from Home section will offer free design tips, curated assortments and inspiration for students to create functional learning spaces at home. Whether students are studying on campus, living in an apartment or studying at home, Bed Bath & Beyond is here to help by offering value-driven products, solutions and a College Savings Pass.

With the uncertainty of how exactly the COVID-19 pandemic will impact college and university campuses, many schools are opting for virtual college courses this fall. As a result, many students will be living at home in their childhood bedrooms instead of campus dormitories. Shopping for and decorating a dorm room is a rite of passage for college-bound students and College from Home provides inspiration to design a stylish and functional bedroom that feels like college.

«As the college destination for countless students across the country, whether studying at home or on campus, we know this fall won’t bring the typical college experience every student looks forward to,» says Joe Hartsig, Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer of Bed Bath & Beyond. «College from Home brings the dorm experience to life for students by showcasing essential product solutions, paired with design inspiration to turn their childhood bedrooms and work spaces into functional spaces for remote learning.»

Starting today, the College from Home section will feature virtual learning and study at home dorm essentials including lap desks, organization tools, accessories, and bedding to transform childhood bedrooms into dreamy dorm spaces. The design team at Decorist created three room examples to help inspire for students to create authentic spaces including:

  • Chill Camp Vibes: a natural and rustic vibe, with muted colors and outdoorsy elements for a camping-out feel
  • Low-Key Bohemian: bright and cozy, with vintage-inspired pieces and cool modern touches
  • Modern Glam: pink and gold with plenty of plush, fluffy accents that come together for a mature, chic look

«College students are adjusting to a new learning environment this year. In July, we saw searches on our site up more than 200% for desks and office chairs compared to the same period last year. They need design guidance and inspiration to create a conducive space —whether they’re living at home or on campus. With that in mind, and along with insights from current students, we designed these spaces to set students up for academic success, as well as to be cozy, comfortable, and personal,» said Cindy Davis, Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer of Bed Bath & Beyond and President of Decorist.

«In our survey of college students, about seven in ten students1 say decorating their dorm is important to them, and their dorm decor is an expression of self. Students shared they seek to create a space to feel ‘at home’ which is our core brand purpose and what we want to help them achieve with these inspirational designs.»

To create an upgraded dorm-inspired bedroom at home, Decorist provides help with a style quiz or the option to collaborate with a Decorist designer. It also provides several tips for students and their parents to consider before shopping:

  • Create a Cohesive Look: Before shopping, students should think about the look they want to go for and get inspired!
  • Take a Seat: Comfortable, back-friendly seating options are essential for studying and learning remotely, while a comfortable chair and ottoman will make reading and study breaks cozier.
  • Brighten Up: Don’t forget to include adequate lighting and even consider lamps with a USB port to keep devices charged and ready to go.
  • Express Yourself: Artwork and décor will not only make a space stand out, but also acts as a virtual backdrop for video classes
  • Make It Comfy: While having a dedicated study space is important, it’s equally as important to have a comfortable bed and relaxation corner to relax from studying and get a good night’s rest
  • Sleep in Style: As the main focal point of a bedroom, bedding is a key place to showcase style through pillows, throws, and even curtains.
  • Get Organized: With the childhood bedroom acting as a space to learn and relax, organizing textbooks and paperwork on bookcases or in filing cabinets will help keep students on track and everything in its place.
  • Fuel Up: Even though the kitchen may be a short walk away, having a small refrigerator or a personal coffee maker will help keep students fueled while studying.

For college this season, students and parents can take advantage of many services including newly introduced 2-hour Buy-Online-Pickup-In-Store (BOPIS) and contactless Curbside Pickup services, to make the college shopping experience as safe and easy as possible. Excess Weight Among Pregnant Women May Interfere With Child’s Developing Brain

NEW YORK, Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Led by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the investigation linked high body mass index (BMI), an indicator of obesity, to changes in two brain areas, the prefrontal cortex and anterior insula. These regions play a key role in decision-making and behavior, with disruptions having previously been linked to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and overeating.

In their new study, publishing online August 11 in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, the investigators examined 197 groups of metabolically active nerve cells in the fetal brain. Using millions of computations, the study authors divided the groups into 16 meaningful subgroups based on over 19,000 possible connections between the groups of neurons. They found only two areas of the brain where their connections to each other were statistically strongly linked to the mother’s BMI.

«Our findings affirm that a mother’s obesity may play a role in fetal brain development, which might explain some of the cognitive and metabolic health concerns seen in children born to mothers with higher BMI,» says Moriah Thomason, PhD, the Barakett Associate Professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health.

As obesity rates continue to soar in the United States, it is more important than ever to understand how the condition may impact early brain development, says Thomason, who is also an associate professor in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone.

Previous studies showing an association between obesity and brain development had mostly looked at cognitive function in children after birth. The new investigation is believed to be the first to measure changes in fetal brain activity in the womb, and as early as six months into pregnancy.

Thomason says this approach was designed to eliminate the potential influence of breast feeding and other environmental factors occurring after birth and to examine the earliest origins of negative effects of maternal BMI on the developing child’s brain.

For the investigation, the research team recruited 109 women with BMIs ranging from 25 to 47. (According to the National Institutes of Health, women are considered «overweight» if they have a BMI of 25 or higher and are «obese» if their BMI is 30 and higher.) The women were all between six and nine months’ pregnant.

The research team used MRI imaging to measure fetal brain activity and map patterns of communication between large numbers of brain cells clustered together in different regions of the brain. Then, they compared the study participants to identify differences in how groups of neurons communicate with each other based on BMI.

The investigators caution that their study was not designed to draw a direct line between the differences they found and ultimate cognitive or behavioral problems in children. The study only looked at fetal brain activity. But, Thomason says, they now plan to follow the participants’ children over time to determine whether the brain activity changes lead to ADHD, behavioral issues, and other health risks.

Funding for the study was provided by National Institutes of Health grants R01 MH110793, R34 DA050287, R01 MH122447, and R21 ES026022.

In addition to Thomason, other NYU researchers involved in the study included Carly Lenniger, BS. Megan Norr, BA, of the University of California Berkeley, served as the study lead author. Additional research support was provided by Jasmine Hect, BS, of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and Martijn van den Heuvel of VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

New NPG Forum Paper Links Climate Change, Migration, and National Security to Population Growth and Sustainability

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — As record breaking heatwaves continue to scorch the nation, Negative Population Growth, Inc. has published a new Forum Paper, titled Climate Change, Migration and National Security. Authored by Edwin S. Rubenstein, the paper discusses global warming as it relates to migration and how, in turn, that migration could be a threat to national security. Rubenstein begins his work establishing that climate change affects at least 30% of the world’s population, saying: «As climate change accelerates, as much as one-third of world population could live in places that most humans consider too hot for habitation.» He also zeroes in on Sub-Saharan Africa, the hottest region in the world, to highlight their experience, noting that it is «home to some of the poorest and most rapidly growing populations on the planet. More impoverished people fighting for less water and arable land leaves modern technology and conveniences out of reach for all but the privileged few.»

Climate change expedites migration away from lands that are no longer able to produce and sustain livelihoods. Examples of this type of migration can be seen in Central America where the temperature has risen 0.5C since 1950 and there is a significant increase in young adults moving from farm-to-city in search of jobs. Times of internal migration in the U.S. are also prevalent throughout history. Rubenstein recalls the Dust Bowl exodus of the 1930s in the Great Plains as a large scale example of a migration of people forced to leave decades and generations of hard work to start fresh somewhere new, stating: «Between 1930 and 1940, approximately 3.5 million people moved out of the plains states, most of them to California

Bringing readers back to present day, Rubenstein explains why, after the U.S. and Central America have experienced droughts worse than those of the 1930s, U.S. residents have not migrated to new locations like so many Central Americans have, stating: «Climate change has already produced droughts equal to or worse than those of the 1930s – but mass migration is nowhere to be seen. Intense irrigation, fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified crops enable immense crops year after year whether it rains or not. Machines and science have replaced much of the role of labor in U.S. agriculture. Central American farmers operate on such a small scale they cannot afford the technological advancements available to their American counterparts.»

National security is a necessary part of the global-warming-and-its-effects conversation because of its ties to other national concerns. Rubenstein highlights these issues, saying: «Climate is not the only factor at work. Some researchers say long-standing racial and ethnic tensions, corruption, economics, and governmental incompetence, are even more important. At most, they say, climate change is a ‘threat multiplier’ for countries that were fragile long before global warming was evident. Still other scholars find that drought can push long-simmering tensions to a breaking point, leading to violent conflict.»

Rubenstein holds that as temperatures continue to shift «some populations may adapt…embracing new agriculture and technologies or population controls. But for many poor nations, migration may be the only feasible option.» In conclusion, Rubenstein maintains a cautious outlook, stating: «With global population expected to rise to about 10 billion by 2070, this implies that as many as 3.5 billion people could migrate to cooler climates. Migration of this magnitude, even if contained within national borders, presents a threat to U.S. national security.»

NPG’s Executive Vice President Craig Lewis commented on Rubenstein’s work, saying: «Every corner of the Earth is affected by climate change, and population growth, especially in regions known for droughts and farm-to-city migration, is not sustainable. In order to protect our natural resources and maintain our national security we must work together to slow, halt, and eventually reverse population growth.»

Founded in 1972, NPG is a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to educating the American public and political leaders regarding the damaging effects of population growth. We believe that our nation is already vastly overpopulated in terms of the long-range carrying capacity of its resources and environment. NPG advocates the adoption of its Proposed National Population Policy, with the goal of eventually stabilizing U.S. population at a sustainable level – far lower than today’s. We do not simply identify the problems – we propose solutions. FlexJobs and Prudential Analyze the Impact of COVID-19 on Personal Finances

BOULDER, Colo., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — According to a survey of more than 1,100 U.S.-based respondents interested in flexible work, more than half (53%) of people are currently earning half or less of their pre-pandemic income. Approximately one-third (31%) of respondents have lost their entire income since the pandemic started. This survey was conducted by FlexJobs, fielded in partnership with Prudential (1), in late June 2020.

Almost half (46%) say their emergency savings wouldn’t last them more than three months and roughly a quarter (24%) said their savings would not even last one month. Overall, 62% of those surveyed do not have enough emergency savings to last six months.

Lack of Financial Wellness:
As a result of the pandemic, many have experienced a significant shift in their financial stability:

  • 44% of respondents reported that they are currently struggling financially, whereas only 24% reported the same thing before the pandemic
  • 21% said they were financially secure before COVID-19, and only 10% say the same thing now.

Immediate Financial Steps Taken:
84% of respondents are taking specific steps regarding their finances, many of which may have a negative long-term impact on their financial health, especially on their retirement planning. Collectively, 1 in 5 respondents made changes to their retirement savings, including stopping or reducing retirement contributions (12%) or withdrawing from their retirement savings (8%).

Other actions that people have taken or plan to take in the next three to six months to address their financial situation as a result of COVID-19 are:

  • Try to pick-up extra work/hours, looking for sources of additional income (49%)
  • Build my emergency savings (28%)
  • File for unemployment (28%)
  • Delay a major purchase, such as a car (25%)
  • Use my emergency savings (23%)

«At FlexJobs, we are deeply aware of how intricately jobs and finances are intertwined, which is why we have partnered with Prudential to gain a better understanding of the challenges that many people are now facing,» said Sara Sutton, Founder and CEO of FlexJobs. «We also co-hosted a financial wellness educational webinar to help educate workers about financial steps they can take during the pandemic and beyond. For the longer term, we established a financial wellness resource center to support their growing financial literacy and ultimately help them reach their financial goals,» Sutton concluded.

Pre-COVID-19 Finances:
The pandemic has only exacerbated tenuous financial conditions for many in the flexible workforce.

  • Just 30% agreed that they had a good plan in place in case they got sick or needed care in the short-term, and even fewer strongly agreed (12%).
  • Although over two-thirds say personal financial wellness is a key priority, only 50% agreed that they felt prepared to make informed decisions about their finances. When asked what’s keeping them back from feeling well-prepared, respondents cited the following obstacles:
    • Don’t know how to evaluate the different options (27%)
    • Don’t know what options are even available to them (23%)
    • Didn’t have strong role models when it comes to finances (23%)
    • Don’t understand the financial terms/jargon used (21%)
    • Not earning enough money (44%), high cost of living expenses (35%) and too much debt (26%) were the top reported reasons for not meeting financial goals before COVID-19.
  • Other factors preventing people from reaching their financial goals included not being disciplined enough about finances (23%), not having enough time to focus on financial goals (16%), and not having access to workplace benefits (e.g., health/dental/vision insurance, paid time off, disability insurance) (15%).

«The pandemic exposed the widening gap between the financially secure and insecure in this country – with people of color, women, younger generations, gig workers, and the retail workforce disproportionately impacted,» said Dawn Goldbacher, Vice President of Business Development at Prudential. «Access to protection, savings, education, and employment opportunities through the workplace and other channels are essential to recovery.»

Financial Products Accessed:

Respondents indicated that they or their spouses had:
Financial products: 97% have at least one kind of financial product
1. Checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts, or certificates
    of deposit (93%)
2. Employer-sponsored retirement plan (401(k), 403(b), 457, pension, etc.) (52%)
3. Individual Retirement Account (IRA) that is NOT employer-sponsored (41%)
4. Investment accounts, NOT retirement-related (Individual stocks/bonds,
    mutual funds, ETFs, etc.) (31%)
5. Health Savings Account (25%)
6. Education investment or savings account (529, Coverdell, etc.) (10%)

Insurance products: 87% have at least one kind of insurance product
1. Health insurance through an employer (57%)
2. Life insurance through your employer (33%)
3. Life insurance purchased on your own (not through an employer) (31%)
4. Health insurance not purchased through your employer (ACA, private plans,
long-term care, critical illness, etc.) (26%)
5. Disability insurance (14%)
6. None of these (13%)
7. Fixed or Variable Annuity (4%)

Estate planning products: More than half do not have any estate planning products
1. Will, estate plan, or trust (33%)
2. Healthcare proxy, living will, or power of attorney (24%)
3. None (56%)

On the Job Highlights:

  • 46% of full-time employed respondents said their regular job was temporarily being done from home; 20% of total respondents were already working remotely
  • 24% are currently using remote work to supplement their income
  • If given a choice, 71% would prefer to work remotely full-time once the pandemic is over, and 25% would prefer a combination of remote and office work
  • 56% say they view remote work more favorably as a result of the pandemic
  • Roughly 1 in 5 (22%) are hoping to find a part-time or side gig to earn supplemental income

PALM BEACH, Florida, Aug. 11, 2020 //PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Tele N, the television network that showcases the best selection of classic Mexican movies as well as the most popular telenovelas and series from around the world, premieres the Ukrainian TV series La Chica Griega (Greek Woman), family drama produced to attract a wide audience because the heroes turned out to be multilateral and as if drawn from real people, with all their pluses and minuses.

The main character, Tanya, works at a provincial museum and specializes in the art of ancient Greece. Thanks to her passion she meets a handsome, wealthy metropolitan art dealer Gregory and marries him, but after things get serious and the honeymoon stage wears off, she notices she has more than a new relationship with him, she has his entire family to get to know and welcome as well: domineering mother, pale sister, and intrigued lover.

The male main character, Gregory, has been so dependent and accustomed to a luxury environment from early childhood through adult life. The young man grew up without a father and was raised by his mother Sophia. She was ambitious, driven by her need for power. Sophia enjoyed an opulent lifestyle and provided her children with everything they needed – money, and even antique shops. Gregory and his sister grew up very spoiled.

Sophia, as the mother of Gregory, will do everything in order to destroy her daughter-in-law Tanya. The woman is not able to maintain a positive attitude. She could be described as ruthlessness and coldness. Moreover, Sophia is very reserved and does not allow her children to express their feelings. They can’t find themselves in the white-knuckled grip of a toxic relationship in which they never know how things will look when each other’s less adorable.
