National Tire Safety Week, an annual initiative of the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, will take place August 31 through September 6.

According to a recent survey conducted by Discount Tire, nearly 50 percent of Americans plan to take a road trip of more than 100 miles in the next 30 days, with over one in two feeling comfortable with the idea of taking a road trip. National Tire Safety Week serves as a reminder for those eager drivers to check their vehicles before hitting the road. To help them prepare, the experts at Discount Tire have four key tire safety tips every driver should know:

  1. Check your tires – With most cars sitting idle more than ever this year, it’s important to check your air pressure at least once a month, especially before long trips. Even when tires aren’t used, they can lose one to two PSI (pounds per square inch) of pressure per month.
  2. Know their age – The older a tire, the higher its risk of failure. As a tire ages, the rubber becomes brittle, losing elasticity and strength. A tire’s age can be found by checking the DOT number stamped on its sidewall. Discount Tire recommends replacing any tire that’s six years old or older.
  3. Check your trunk – Many manufacturers of new vehicles are replacing spare tires with tire-inflation kits that include puncture-coating sealants and air compressors, or even run-flat tires. Check to see what your vehicle has, and make sure you have a roadside-assistance plan.
  4. Don’t overload – Before loading your vehicle for a road trip, check the manufacturer specifications for load-carrying capacity. Overloading has an impact similar to driving on underinflated tires.

This year’s event was converted to a Drive In format just three weeks ago to comply with New York State Health Department Regulations. Show officials worked with the leadership at Orange County Government to create and submit a plan in early August after Governor Cuomo said he would be willing to consider allowing the event to take place if it was held as a Drive In.

The event was moved from New York Stewart International Airport, its home for the past five years, to nearby Orange County Airport where a 200 acre grass infield was available to space out vehicles enough to allow spectators to view the event from private carside viewing boxes.

«Our aerial stage is two miles wide and 500 feet high» said Lilley, «Making it the perfect event to host in the era of social distancing. We were able to spread the cars out over a half mile wide area inside the airport and provide viewing areas beside each vehicle that complied with all CDC social distancing guidelines.»

The New York State Health Department worked with Orange County Government and Event Officials on some last minute mandates that really contributed to the success of the show.

«We painted over 50 miles of lines on the infield of the airport in one day to create clearly delinieated carside viewing boxes for each vehicle» said Steven Neuhaus, Orange County Executive. «This really assisted law enforcement with social distancing compliance to ensure the safety of spectators viewing the show.»

The 2021 New York International Air Show is scheduled for August 28-29, 2021. Show officials are in discussion with Aviation department leadership from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for the event to return to New York Stewart International Airport in future years once social distancing guidelines are relaxed.

In a first for HI USA, the coastal HI Point Montara Lighthouse, HI Pigeon Point Lighthouse and HI Point Reyes hostels will reopen as vacation rentals, so a group or family can rent private units on the properties, two of which are in restored lighthouses. Groups may also rent the entire hostel facilities including their kitchens and indoor and outdoor public areas, for a completely private and expansive stay.

To give guests and staff added comfort upon reopening, HI USA has introduced its «Let’s Stay Safe, Together» program, which includes safe distancing guidelines, mask requirements for all staff and guests, temperature checks at check-in and for all staff daily, enhanced cleaning, and contact tracing. Initially, hostel kitchens will have limited services, cafes will be closed, and kitchens, lounges and public areas will have reduced capacity. Hostels’ dorm rooms will be sold at very reduced occupancy, so individual guests and small travel parties will have exclusive use of their dorm rooms. Organized group social activities remain suspended until further notice.

Hostel Closings
However, the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions have created serious financial challenges for the organization, similar to what many other lodging, restaurant and venue operators have experienced. Some smaller and seasonal hostels could not be readily adapted to the new rigorous health and safety program. After an extensive review, HI USA determined that several were no longer feasible to continue operating and made the difficult decision to close select properties including HI Austin Hostel (in TX); HI Eastham Hostel (in Cape Cod, MA); HI Houston Hostel (in TX); HI LA South Bay Hostel (in CA); HI Madison Hostel (in WI); HI Monterey Hostel (in CA); HI Nantucket Hostel (in MA); and HI Portland Hawthorne Hostel (in OR).

«The decision to close any of our hostels is not one we take lightly,» said Hedge. «With most of our hostels closed for the past several months and the continued uncertainty surrounding the economy and coronavirus pandemic, it was not financially viable to reopen these hostels.
