One of the most crucial materials is Nickel, an essential part of the cathode in the Li-ion batteries enabling electrification. Most automakers utilize Nickel-based batteries for their balance of energy and power density; for example BMW, Hyundai and Renault use variants of the Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) chemistry, while Tesla uses a Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide (NCA) chemistry. China also now favors NMC chemistries, having phased out Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) chemistries which is its subsidy program.

In 2019, more than 95% of new electric passenger cars sold used a variant of either NMC or NCA, as detailed in the new IDTechEx report «Materials for Electric Vehicles 2020-2030«. Demand for Nickel is further amplified by the trend towards higher Nickel content in cells, as manufacturers switch to chemistries like NMC 622 or 811 over the previous 111 and 523, to improve energy density further and reduce dependence on Cobalt.

Nickel is the most expensive material in electric vehicle batteries after Cobalt and is also one of the most highly used outside of the battery industry. While Nickel is often not discussed as much as Cobalt or Lithium, sustainable and environmentally conscious supply is becoming more of an issue.

In 2017, the Philippines government suspended nearly half of its Nickel mines, citing environmental concerns. Moreover, Indonesia accounts for the largest supply of Nickel and in 2019 the country banned exports of raw Nickel ore to boost their domestic processing industry. Indonesia also has the most planned developments for increasing Nickel production and is set to dominate the supply chain.

One of the issues is Nickel is typically mined from ores that contain only a very small percentage of useful Nickel, resulting in a large amount of waste material. Recently it has been announced that two Nickel mining companies in Indonesia are planning to use deep-sea disposal for the raw material waste into the Coral Triangle as they ramp up operations. Less than 20 Nickel mines worldwide use deep-sea disposal, but these new facilities would account for millions of tonnes of waste material each year. This method is typically used because it is cheaper than the alternatives of dam storage or converting the raw materials to useful products.

Many automakers are aware of the environmental concerns in Nickel supply and that it can undermine the environmentally friendly message of the electric vehicle. Most, including the likes of PSA, VW and Tesla, have pledged to reduce the environmental impact of their batteries. This becomes challenging as the choice of suppliers that can meet the demands of these large automotive companies are limited. In the future, Nickel producers will have to prove that their practices are environmentally friendly if they want to sell into the European and American markets, where the automotive industry is making this a priority. Elon Musk has been quoted as saying that Tesla would give a «giant contract» to any companies that could mine Nickel «efficiently and in an environmentally sensitive way» (Financial Times).

As the electric vehicle market grows with the trend towards higher Nickel chemistries, IDTechEx expects the demand for Nickel from electric vehicle batteries to increase ten-fold by 2030 compared to 2019. This makes the environmentally-conscious supply of Nickel a serious issue going forward for the electric vehicle market.

For more information, IDTechEx has provided analysis and forecasts for over 30 materials essential in the construction of electric vehicle traction motors, battery cells and battery packs in the latest report: «Materials for Electric Vehicles 2020-2030», www.IDTechEx.com/EVMat.

This report also forms a part of the broader electric vehicle and energy storage research at IDTechEx, where we track adoption of electric vehicles, battery trends and demand across more than 100 different mobility sectors, summarised in one master report, «Electric Vehicles: Land Sea and Air 2021-2041«.

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 9, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Indiana sportsbooks used the return of the NFL to launch itself into new territory in September, surpassing $200 million in bets in a single month for the first time, producing record operator revenue, and passing $100 million in combined revenue since launching in September 2019. And in doing so, the Hoosier State shook off the growing challenge from neighboring Illinois in the pecking order for U.S. sports betting markets, according to PlayIndiana analysts.

«Indiana has benefitted from Illinois’ relatively slow launch and its inconsistency with in-person registration requirements, buying Indiana time to continue to capitalize on the Chicago market,» said Jessica Welman, analyst for PlayIndiana.com. «Indiana’s balanced regulatory framework remains attractive to operators, which has kept the market on relatively firm footing, too. Those factors were key in kicking off the football season in record fashion.»

Bettors wagered $207.5 million in September, according to official reporting released Friday, shattering Indiana’s previous record of $187.2 million set in February. September’s result is up 489% from the $35.2 million handle the industry posted in September 2019, the first month of legal sports betting in the state.

September’s bets produced $14.3 million in adjusted gross revenue for the state’s operators, up 66.9% from $8.6 million in September 2019 and topping the previous record $12.2 million set in January.

Since launch, sportsbooks have now generated:

  • $109.4 million in revenue.
  • $10.4 million in state taxes after injecting $1.4 million in September.

September’s totals should keep Indiana in fourth place nationally, ahead of Illinois, which produced $139.8 million in August, and Colorado.

Football betting was paramount, attracting $48.4 million in bets even with the Big 10 football season postponed, as bettors flocked to bet on the Indianapolis Colts.

«The strong start to the season by the Colts has undoubtedly spiked interest in football betting,» Welman said. «With Big 10 football planning a return this month, and assuming the Colts remain a contender, sportsbooks are suddenly eyeing a particularly busy fall.»

Online betting generated 83.5%, or $173.2 million, of September’s handle. DraftKings/Ameristar Casino topped the online market again with $89.4 million in bets, up from $73.7 million in August. September’s wagers led to $3.2 million in gross receipts.

Meanwhile, retail sportsbooks are inching toward normalization, combining for a $34.3 million handle in September. Hollywood Lawrenceburg’s $9.9 million handle topped retail books.

«Even with challenges ahead, Indiana’s sports betting industry has the potential for more growth,» said Dustin Gouker, lead analyst for PlayIndiana.com. «The market is still just 13 months old. And many of the advantages that made Indiana an instant success — including strong support of local teams such as the Colts, and easy access to large markets such as Cincinnati and Louisville — will remain for the foreseeable future.»

An even more reliable revenue driver could be on the way, too, after State Sen. Jon Ford (R-Terre Haute) promised a new effort next year to legalize online casino gambling in the state.

«Online casino gambling has enormous potential to generate revenue for the state, and its legalization would almost certainly stem any slowdown in sports betting caused by increased competition from Indiana’s neighbors,» Gouker said. «With a maturing online sports betting market, Indiana already has strong infrastructure in place to quickly ramp up. That would put the market on the path of success.»

Keeping the health and safety of the community top of mind, Denver Beer Week aims to assist these local business through promoting safe, in-person events, as well as take home and virtual options for the first time ever, at local breweries; exclusive, on-site deals at nearly 40 Denver breweries with the new GABF Festival Passport; and an updated Denver Beer Trail, so beer can lovers support their neighborhood favorites throughout Denver Beer Week and year-round.
