Entre las actividades realizadas, se contaron las competencias de conocimientos y de habilidades para los alumnos, reconocimientos a personal académico y administrativo con 5, 10, 15, 20 y 25 años de servicio en la institución, el lanzamiento de nuevos cursos y clases en el campo de la tecnología de la información, y la consolidación del modelo de enseñanza híbrido (clases teóricas en remoto, clases prácticas en los laboratorios) implementado desde el mes de Julio 2020.

Los inicios

En 1988, el Instituto de Negocios y Tecnología (BTI por sus siglas en inglés) fue fundado por el Sr. Fernando Llerena y su esposa, Gladys Llerena – educadores que emigraron a Miami desde su natal Perú en 1980.

La primera sede del instituto estuvo ubicada en La Pequeña Habana y brindaba capacitación a los miembros de la comunidad que buscaban aprender contabilidad, reparación de computadoras e inglés como segunda lengua (conocido desde entonces como programa ESOL por sus siglas en inglés). «Después de 10 años de adaptación y crecimiento en este país que nos acogió y nos brindó muchas oportunidades – y en la lucha constante por encontrar la superación – mi esposo y yo decidimos continuar en el campo de la educación para que otros inmigrantes también pudieran superarse y lograr el nivel profesional y económico que tenían en sus países de procedencia o que deseaban obtener en su nueva vida en los Estados Unidos,» comentó la Sra. Gladys.

Por su parte Luis recuerda que en 1994 la escuela se mudó para el área de Kendall y continuó con el desarrollo de la misión de preparar y graduar a estudiantes con la más alta excelencia ética, técnica y profesional que construirán una vida mejor para ellos, sus familias y su comunidad.  «Al comprender que la educación es un aspecto muy importante de nuestra comunidad, creemos firmemente que cada negocio debe ser relevante para las necesidades de la comunidad. En el año 2002, luego de obtener la acreditación nacional del Consejo de Acreditación de Colegios y Escuelas Independientes (ACICS por sus siglas en inglés) – la cual le permite otorgar títulos de Asociado en Ciencias, cambió su nombre a CBT College (Colegio de Negocios y Tecnología).  En 2005, CBT College inauguró dos nuevas sedes, una en Miami (Flagler St.) y la segunda en la ciudad de Hialeah. En el año 2008, sumó una nueva sucursal en la ciudad de Cutler Bay, FL para atender a la población del sur del Condado e introdujo los programas relacionados a la salud.

El reto 2020

Globalmente, el año 2020 ha significado un reto para todas las industrias. En este sentido CBT College ha enfrentado los desafíos propios de la transición al modelo de enseñanza híbrido, y a la adaptación de sus sedes a las regulaciones del CDC. Según Luis Llerena, presidente y CEO de CBT College, la capacitación práctica in-situ es clave en el modelo académico de la escuela y una de las razones de su éxito en la enseñanza de carreras de tecnología, por lo cual «CBT College ha decidido continuar con el enfoque híbrido como una modalidad de enseñanza permanente en nuestra institución para que nuestros estudiantes continúen recibiendo su capacitación práctica nuestros laboratorios mientras cursan las materias teóricas en línea», continuó.

Por dicha razón, CBT College proporcionó computadoras portátiles a los estudiantes que no tenían computadora en casa para ayudar a la población estudiantil a adoptar la nueva modalidad de aprendizaje y el departamento de Servicios Profesionales está brindando apoyo para la reubicación laboral de aquellos estudiantes que perdieron su trabajo. Graduación en tiempos de pandemia

Uno de los retos que enfrentó CBT College en el 2020, fue el planificar su Acto de Graduación #73 en formato virtual para los más de 600 alumnos que culminaron sus estudios durante el año en curso. #1 – I’ll Miss my Family and Friends

This is a big one, especially for grandparents. But is this really as big a barrier as it used to be, even just a few years ago?

«Modern technology really takes the edge off,» says Marsha Scarbrough, International Living’s Spain Correspondent. «You can chat with your best friend every day on Skype, play with the grandkids on FaceTime, and celebrate special occasions on Zoom. WhatsApp is wonderful for sharing voicemail messages, videos, photos, and all kinds of things. There are many, many ways to keep in touch.

«I know it’s not the same as getting a hug, but when you really need a hug you can go and visit them. Planes will be flying again and they will so glad to see you. Even better, they can come and visit you. How great will it be to introduce a new culture to your grandchildren, to show them a new country, and teach them a few words of another language?»

#2 – I’ll Need to Learn a New Language

While it is possible to live in most foreign countries without learning much of the local language, unless you choose one of the English-speaking destinations (Belize or Malta, for example), or limit yourself to staying within established expat communities, you will find that it is important to learn to be able to communicate on some level with the locals.

But is this a barrier, or an opportunity? It really is not necessary to become fluent. You can get quite far learning the names for household items and the «kindergarten words»—you know, words like please, thank you, hello, goodbye, numbers, colors, and where is the bathroom, etc.

«In Spain, for instance, you can get by without speaking Spanish,» says Marsha. «Many expats never learn more than a few basic phrases in Spanish. If you are living in an expat community or a tourist area, most Spanish people are going to speak English as well. People under 30 here speak English quite well and a lot of Spaniards over 30 are learning English for business.

«But why not learn a little Spanish (or whatever the language is in the place you’re interested in settling)? It will help you deepen your connection to the locals you meet and make it easier to travel around the country. It shows a respect for your host country and helps you integrate into the culture.»

#3 – Will I Have Access to Good Healthcare?

This is an issue that will vary greatly depending on your target location, your current general health, and your lifestyle. However, it is surprising to some North Americans how good healthcare can be in other nations.

«In Spain, you will have better healthcare than you have in the U.S. and at a more affordable place,» says Marsha. «If you come to Spain on a retirement visa, the non-lucrative visa, you are required as part of your application to purchase private health insurance, which is the best of the best.

«For a healthy 64-year-old couple with Sanitas, the biggest private health insurer in Spain, you would be paying $296 a month. That’s for a couple. But the price does increase as you age. For me, at 73 and single, I’m paying $225 a month.

«After a year of residency in Spain, it’s possible to get into the public system for even less than that.»

When all is said and done, choosing the expat life is just the same as any other major decision in your life; there will always be obstacles standing in your way, and there will always be an excuse to delay or even to never make the change.

But remember that it is often true that the bigger the challenge, the bigger the reward.

#4 – «I Just Don’t Know Where I Should Retire.»
