NORTH ANDOVER, Mass., Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — 6K, the world’s leading developer of microwave plasma technology for the production of advanced materials, today announced that Dr. Joe Felter, a former senior Department of Defense official under then Secretary of Defense James Mattis, has joined 6K’s advisory board. Dr. Felter will guide 6K’s strategy in working with the US Department of Defense and other Federal agencies for the innovation and deployment of advanced materials products to support the national interest of the US. He joins other industry luminaries including Magnus Rene, prior CEO ARCAM, and Robert Galyen, prior CTO CATL.

«We are honored to have Dr. Felter join the 6K team as part of our advisory board. 6K has a unique technology that not only addresses scarcity of strategic materials and reduces our dependence on foreign imports, but for the first time enables domestic production of advanced materials typically produced overseas due to our dramatic reduction in production costs and ability to produce in an environmentally sustainable way,» explained Dr. Aaron Bent, CEO for 6K. «Dr. Felter’s specialty with issues of national security strategy and deep relationships in Washington are invaluable not only to guide 6K, but to maximize deployment in a way that enhances the mission of the United States

Dr. Joe Felter is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia. He is currently a William J. Perry Fellow at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation and research fellow at the Hoover Institution. Dr. Felter is co-creator of «Hacking for Defense», a defense innovation focused curriculum he helped develop and pilot at Stanford that is now sponsored by the Department of Defense and taught at over 50 universities across the country.

«Strategic materials are becoming increasingly pivotal to the national interests of the United States, and 6K continues to prove its unique capability to address these needs, with examples like its recent Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) contract to recover and upcycle materials for defense applications from domestic sources of supply,» commented Joe Felter. «The recent pandemic has shown the need to strengthen control of supply chains and create domestic sourcing. 6K can do this across numerous important areas including batteries for energy independence and critical alloys for aircraft and weapons platforms. I am extremely enthusiastic to join 6K’s advisory board and help the company to advance its efforts both in Washington and with strategic suppliers.»

A former US Army Special Forces and Foreign Area Officer, Dr. Felter served in a variety of special operations and diplomatic assignments including multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. Felter is Founder of BMNT a Silicon Valley based technology incubator and problem-solving platform which Forbes magazine named as one of the nation’s top 25 Veteran-Founded Startups in America in 2016.

Dr. Felter received a B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Graduate Certificate in Management from the University of West Australia, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University.

6K recently announced a $1 Million DLA phase II award to establish a domestic capability to recover and convert critical metals from defense scrap into premium additive manufacturing powder. The company has also announced a strategic partnership with Relativity Space to develop AM rocket parts for space made from 6K sustainable materials. 6K was previously awarded a $1 million Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant through the U.S.Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to continue its development of advanced cathode materials for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Waga Energy and Ferrovial Servicios to deliver massive landfill gas-to-biomethane project in Spain

The Can Mata project is the first landfill gas injection project in Europe to be financed by a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The Can Mata project is the first landfill gas injection project in Europe to be financed by a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

GRENOBLE, France, Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ – Ferrovial Servicios, a leading global service operator, has selected Waga Energy to produce biomethane at the Can Mata landfill, one of Spain’s largest landfill, near Barcelona. The site will be the first in Spain to use the WAGABOX® purification technology, developed by Waga Energy to recover landfill gas in the form of biomethane, a renewable substitute for natural gas.

The WAGABOX® unit at the Can Mata site will be commissioned in 2022. It will treat up to 2,200 m3/h of landfill gas and inject 70 GWh of biomethane per year into the gas grid of the Spanish operator Nedgia, which is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 14,000 Spanish households or 200 lorries. The project will avoid the emission of 17,000 tonnes of CO2 per year by substituting renewable gas for natural gas.

This is the first ever landfill gas injection project to be financed by a long-term power purchase agreement in Europe. This method of financing is common for renewable electricity projects, but rarely used for green gas projects, generally unable to provide buyers with a competitive price over the long term.

This first-ever «Biomethane Purchase Agreement» has been made possible thanks to the proven efficiency of the WAGABOX® technology, combined to Waga Energy’s unique expertise in the management of landfill gas injection projects.

The two partners have adopted a business model that guarantees high performance throughout the project cycle. Waga Energy will purchase landfill gas from Ferrovial Servicios and finance the construction and operation of the WAGABOX® unit, manage relations with the gas network operator, and the sale of the biomethane. Waga Energy will invest 7.5 million euros to commission the unit and connect the landfill to the gas grid, located four kilometers away.

The result of 10 years of R&D within Air Liquid group and Waga Energy, WAGABOX® is a breakthrough technology for upgrading landfill gas into grid-compliant biomethane. It combines membrane filtration and cryogenic distillation to separate the methane from other compounds of landfill gas. Ten units are already in operation in France, supplying 35,000 homes and avoiding 45,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Innovative Tech Solution to Dampen the Digital Divide During COVID

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Because of COVID-19 millions of students are remote, creating gaps that effect learning outcomes.  These gaps often include a lack of Internet access at home and limited opportunities for STEM and Computer Science education. A new Chromebook app has been released that helps bridge these gaps for many students.

Schools have attempted to address remote learning issues by purchasing low-cost computers for students to take home. The most common solution is Chromebooks, which can cost as little as $300. Technology research firm IDC estimates that over 9 million Chromebooks shipped in 3rd quarter of 2020, an increase of 90% over the year before. However, Chromebooks still rely on high-speed Internet connections for most tasks, creating an issue for many families.

The Federal Communications Commission estimates that 21 million Americans lack broadband access, with independent research indicating the actual number is twice as high. In a separate survey, only 30 percent of teachers in high-poverty schools reported students had Internet access at home. While schools are working to close this gap, Internet access will continue to be an issue for education.

Additionally, schools are struggling to provide well-rounded and effective educational experiences via distance learning. Many states addressed this issue by spending a portion of stimulus funds on basic online educational materials for reading and math. This has led to a lack of STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) activities and a more limited exposure to STEM and high-demand careers.

Tennessee-based Thinking Media has created an innovative solution to these issues by releasing the Learning Blade® Backpack app. Learning Blade is a STEM and computer science career awareness platform that provides rich experiences for students. The Learning Blade Backpack app for Chomebooks allows students without Internet access at home to use the library of interactive STEM lessons that expose students to high-demand careers while practicing basic academic skills. Students download lessons while connected to the Internet at school and then work on the interactive lessons even where Internet is not available. Whenever the student connects to the Internet, the results are automatically uploaded for the teacher to review.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, whose efforts in computer science education is nationally recognized stated, «Until every student in our state has access to high-speed Internet, our job isn’t finished. Resources such as Learning Blade’s new app is an innovative stop-gap that allows us to provide students a way to work at home more efficiently while we continue to build out our broadband.»

In Tennessee, Senator Bo Watson observed that «Effective and equitable education opportunities are essential for the economic health of our state, particularly to reach the rural parts of our state. As this has become more difficult in today’s environment, we appreciate companies like Thinking Media who work to create Learning Blade and the new app that brings quality STEM experiences, leveraging technology to bridge distance and resources for all».

Initial feedback has confirmed that this app provides more equitable access to learning. Missouri teacher Amy Polanowski describes use of the Learning Blade Backpack app by saying «I have one student that has been using it at home since she has no Internet, and she loves it. She said it makes her feel like other students and she can keep up with her work without having to rush through it.»

«This crisis impacted the efficacy of online learning platforms and caused our team to re-examine how the delivery of our interdisciplinary STEM lessons might be made more equitable for low- or no-tech students at home,» said Sheila Boyington, President and CEO. «Our team began working almost immediately on a solution that would allow students without reliable Internet to continue to have access to our online lessons. We believe this may be the first solution like this and may be a model for others to follow.»

Former US Congressman Zach Wamp, Thinking Media Board Chair stated «The goals of expanding Internet access into rural areas and advancing new education tools for students who are currently in underserved markets aren’t mutually exclusive.  Rich stories are emerging from rural spots in Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee.  We are thankful for these and other leading states.  We can do this!»

Learning Blade is a system of interactive lessons and printable at-home activities for 5th to 9th graders where students learn about STEM and Computer Science careers while reviewing academics aligned to all 50 states’ standards in 12 human-centered «Missions» that explore these exciting careers.  This resource has been deployed in many states including statewide in Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama and Missouri. Over 4 million lessons have been delivered and independent research confirms that this program increases student awareness and interest in STEM careers.

Will Online Art Auctions Be 2021’s Hot New Trend in the Art World?

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Has the global pandemic changed how people are buying art? There is growing evidence to show that art collectors are enthusiastically embracing online auctions as an appealing and safe alternative to purchasing art in-person.

Park West Gallery was one of the first art dealers to pivot to online auctions during the earliest days of the COVID-19 outbreak. Founded in 1969, Park West is the largest art dealer in the world and they have been holding live-streaming online auctions for their collectors over the past nine months.

«We knew collectors would love our new online experience,» said Park West Gallery Founder and CEO Albert Scaglione. «But what we didn’t anticipate is how quickly that segment of our business would grow.»

Since the start of 2021, Park West has seen record sales and attendance at their online auctions. In fact, over the January 15-17 weekend, the gallery sold 1,559 works of art, the largest number of works that Park West has ever sold during an online auction weekend—breaking their previous record set only two weeks ago on New Year’s weekend when a special three-year-old guest auctioneer brought down the hammer on the record-breaking sale.

«There are many benefits of auctioning art online,» said Scaglione. «One of the biggest benefits is the selection you can offer. When we’re auctioning at an event or on a cruise ship, there is a finite amount of art we can fit into the space. But, when we’re online, the variety of art that we can offer to our clients is simply incredible. And we’re taking advantage of that every week.»

One of the highlights of this past weekend was record-breaking sales from two of Park West’s hottest new artists, Ashton Howard and Jon Rattenbury. Howard is a Florida native who has won critical acclaim for his works of «Fluid Realism»—a technique he invented that captures the light and movement of water in a truly unique fashion. Jon Rattenbury, a popular contemporary artist, is well-known for his «dimensional acrylic» paintings, which give his landscapes an otherworldly level of texture and depth.

The January 15-17 weekend also saw record sales for works by the late great Jean-Claude Picot, the renowned Post-Impressionist who passed away in August 2020.

«We’ve really seen a huge uptick in our online art auctions in 2021,» said Park West Principal Auctioneer Jordan Sitter. «I had a client last weekend who knew us from our cruise auctions who had never attended one of our online auctions before. She saw some of our recent press coverage and decided to attend her first one. She ended up spending over $100,000! Art collectors are really responding to this new format.»

This new surge in online art collecting aligns with 2020 research from Barron’s, the Dow Jones & Company magazine, which noted that the COVID-19 crisis could fundamentally boost online art sales and predicted that the shift to online platforms for art collecting could be «both permanent and transformative.»

«Avangrid Renewables has been pleased to work with Dairyland Power to make Tatanka Ridge a reality,» said Alejandro de Hoz, President and CEO of Avangrid Renewables. «Partners such as Dairyland have helped to build the wind industry in the Midwest and drive the transition to a clean energy future.»

Tatanka Ridge encompasses approximately 18,000 acres of primarily corn and soybean farms and cattle ranches, leased from over 100 landowners. Between land lease payments and taxes, the wind farm will provide $1.7 million of local economic benefits annually over the life of the project.

In July 2020, Avangrid Renewables announced the sale of an 85% ownership interest in Tatanka Ridge Wind, LLC, to WEC Energy Group of Milwaukee. This transaction closed in December 2020.
