‘Safety-first’ Approach – How Evolving Standards Influence Coal Handling Equipment Design

Worker safety standards are influencing the design of coal handling systems. Fact.MR’s surveys and interviews with stakeholders across the value chain revealed that equipment design is being driven by a ‘safety-first approach’. Equipment manufacturers have responded positively to the evolving standards, and in the last couple of years, safer machines and components have been launched.

While implementing the design changes, manufacturers are taking a two-pronged approach – increased safety and reduced maintenance requirement. This two-pronged approach is most widely seen in conveyors, according to the Fact.MR study.

Conveyor Sales Account for 50% of Total Revenue Generation

Conveyors remain the top-selling category in the coal handling system market. In 2019, conveyors accounted for 50% of all coal handling equipment sales.

Future coal handling equipment demand will be heavily influenced by broader developments in thermal power generation. The thermal power industry is likely to grow at nearly 3% through 2030; any major decline in growth can severely limit the prospects of equipment manufacturers.

Coal Handling Equipment Industry Looks Eastward as US and EU Phase-out Coal Energy

Coal handling system manufacturers have to contend with waning demand, as focus on exiting fossil fuels gradually gains traction in North America and Europe. According to Fact.MR’s analysis, bulk handling equipment manufacturers are looking eastward as fossil fuel phase-out will be slower in APAC.

Coal generation mega-projects in China and India will be pivotal to driving future sales. These two countries collectively drive a majority of coal handling equipment in APEJ, a region which accounts for 70% share of total market.

Declining coal production in the U.S. continues to limit opportunities, albeit, it still remains a lucrative market. Another major contraction in US coal production can be expected, as policy-makers turn to natural gas, and other renewables. The US only accounts for 10% of total coal handling system sales.

A similar decline can be expected in EU, with Germany, France, Spain, and Italy phasing out coal power generation gradually. UK, for example, accounts for less than 2% of the global coal handling system market. The outlook in France and Germany mimics the broader shift-away from coal energy, which will lead to modest demand for coal handling equipment in these two countries.

While China, India, and South-east Asia present stable opportunities, demand for coal handling equipment in Japan and South Korea will continue to witness a decline. Governments in these two countries are focusing on clean energy, which will lead to diminishing opportunities for market players.

Let’s start abroad: After the stock market cratered, it began to recover quickly and it became clear this was not a rerun of the 2008 financial crisis. Soon thereafter, we witnessed affluent buyers starting to move on luxury vacation property from Vail to Aspen, and from the Hamptons to South Florida. COVID–19 was triggering the opposite of the financial crash of September 2008, in that luxury real estate was highly desired by those looking for easy-to-access, safe-haven retreats away from urban areas and primary homes. With airports and resorts closed, and most commercial planes not flying, the luxury market was, quite urgently, seeking out real estate!

In TCI, initially, we were not so lucky, as our borders were completely closed from March 24 until July 22. We did however start to (virtually) close Q1 pipeline business and built a bit of momentum via the private jet class just prior to, and after, the airport closures. Q2, (led by the sale of a couple of a trophy properties and several new development villa sales) was also assisted by welcomed stimulus from the TCI Government with a concession halving stamp duty for the second quarter. This helped us close sales during this torturous time for our hotel, resort and villa rental partners grappling with the border’s closures. And this is really the first time in our history that our real estate industry has not been so directly tethered to tourism flow.

After a steady Q3, usually our slowest quarter, Q4 started strong and ended with a flourish, bringing the market to within 15% of last year in gross sales volume ($339M vs. circa $290M) and ahead of 2018 which was a strong year in its own right. Our market has passed yet another stress test with flying colors, as buyers flocked to quality and new development based on ever-present fundamentals of great quality product and ease of access and use. As my partner Nina Siegenthaler simplified in a recent Zoom meeting: «People really want to be here!» Indeed, and now we are experiencing what the Hamptons and Vail Valley and other luxury vacation markets have, with similar buyers seeking a warm weather luxury, safe-haven destination.

We have also witnessed buyer motivations come into clear focus: They want quality, the ease-of-use and access and security, and are less motivated by rental income opting for personal use and long-term capital appreciation. As a Hamptons real estate agent said in early summer, «life plans changed in a weekend,» and while that may be an overstatement for this market, it is clear that buyers (and most existing TCI property owners) have put their umbrellas in the sand with a clear intention: They really want to be here!

In closing, it is wonderful to see old and new friends coming back to the island enjoying our Beautiful By Nature experience. So far, we are doing well with our COVID protocols and travelers are getting used to testing and the authorization process for arrival. Sanitizing a vehicle with UV-C in a shop environment presents special challenges. The process must be effective and fast. Faster than an oil change. That requires the irradiating power of advanced medical equipment, a level far greater than consumer UV lights can deliver.

In 2020, 31 successful attempts flew from Florida’s Space Coast surpassing the record in 1966 of 29 successful launches out of 31 orbital attempts and two suborbital attempts. SpaceX missions comprised 25 of the launches including Starlink internet satellites, two Crew Dragon and two space station resupply missions, and three national security payloads. United Launch Alliance contributed with five Atlas V launches, one of which was Mars2020, and one Delta Heavy.

Florida’s Space Coast ranked as the number one location for both successful and total launches, topping the 2nd and 3rd place locations combined (Jijquan, China with 13 attempts and two failures and Xichang, China with 13 attempts and one failure). The United States was the number 1 country as a whole, with 44 attempted launches, 40 of them being successful.

Looking ahead, 2021 will continue to be a banner year for space history on Florida’s Space Coast. Significant launches include Crew 2 and Boeing’s Starliner uncrewed test set for March, Starliner’s crew test launch, a possible unmanned test flight for Neptune 1 (Space Perspective’s tourist space flight program), Crew 3 scheduled for the Fall, the possibility of Tom Cruise launching in the first private commercial flight to film the first movie in space, and the continued efforts of NASA on the road to the Artemis program.
