The IMEC Illinois Manufacturer Innovation Voucher Moves Needle on New Product Launch

CHICAGO, Jan. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Staying charged is a common problem among cyclists, especially bikepackers (people who go on remote bike trips for long periods of time). When Co-Founders Adam Hokin and Vishaal Mali launched PedalCell in 2015, a major part of their mission was to encourage sustainability by «getting more butts on bikes and less in cars.» However, they observed the largest barrier for bicycle adoption was power. Unlike your office, home, or car, access to a continuous and stable power source is limited for cyclists.

For PedalCell, the main challenge was developing a brand-new product with no reference designs. They assembled an expert team of product developers and lawyers to take PedalCell on a journey from concept to reality. This allowed them to reach the point where the technology was in place for them to seek – and implement – feedback from product testers, industry experts, and successfully file one patent.

The larger part of the bikepacking market is located in Europe, Canada, and Australia. And, with COVID-19 in the mix, bike sales in this segment grew by 144% due to more people seeking safe and fun ways to exercise. With such an excellent market opportunity, the team needed to go through steps to optimize their processes for mass production and ensure their intellectual property was protected. This meant optimizing cost of goods sold, sourcing suppliers, tasking new components to make sure they are scalable, and filing more patents.

PedalCell learned about the IMEC Illinois Manufacturing Innovation Voucher program and applied in January 2020.

Solution

Much to the team’s satisfaction, they were able to secure the capital needed for three additional patents, personnel to test equipment and fixtures, and ultimately manufacture and launch the product. «IMEC allowed us to move forward in our decision and made our company more appealing to investors. We have raised capital before and had 1 patent pending.  Since working with IMEC, we now have 4 patents with 1 granted and 3 others pending. The program catalyzed our success.» Said Hokin.

Despite COVID-19 throwing a wrench in the original timeline to launch, the company still accomplished its goals and gained efficiencies in their project management along the way. In addition, the IMEC team of experts provided guidance on maximizing value from funding and the PedalCell team appreciated this approach. «There’s something to be said about a program that commits you to plan how the funds will be dispersed over a set timeline with a clear end-goal. I would recommend any hardware-related company in Illinois to take a look at the services that IMEC offers and commit to innovation.»

Results

  • Launched new product in domestic and international markets
  • Significant reduction in cost of goods sold
  • Product compatibility improved by 50% in terms of bike designs
  • Filed 4 aggregate patents
  • Doubled market potential by having patent filed for international protection

Seniors Housing and Care M&A Activity Hits Record-High In Q4:2020, According to Acquisition Data from Irving Levin Associates LLC

NEW CANAAN, Conn., Jan. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The number of publicly announced seniors housing and care acquisitions in the fourth quarter of 2020 rose to a record high, with 120 deals announced, based on new acquisition data from Irving Levin Associates. This represents a 107% increase from the 58 transactions in the previous quarter and 5% higher than the 114 deals made public in the fourth quarter of 2019. Also, the $2.52 billion spent on the fourth quarter transactions surpassed the previous quarter’s total of $1.49 billion by 69%, based on publicly disclosed prices. However, compared with the fourth quarter of 2019, which saw $3.73 billion spent, dollar volume was 32% lower.

«As seniors began to receive the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, investors were unleashed on the M&A market in the fourth quarter of 2020,» stated Ben Swett, Editor of The SeniorCare Investor. «Lenders gave the go-ahead on dozens of deals that were delayed because of the pandemic, leading to record transaction volume.»

Portfolio deals were prevalent in the fourth quarter, particularly for skilled nursing facilities, with 26 portfolio sales (three properties or more) announced, versus eight in the third quarter and 10 in the second quarter. Those portfolio sales in the fourth quarter accounted for well over 170 properties. There were four deals that surpassed $100 million in publicly disclosed value, including Eagle Arc Partners’ purchase of 20 skilled nursing facilities in the Southeast for more than $300 million, and Welltower’s $200 million sale of six seniors housing communities around the Boston, Massachusetts area to a fund co-managed by global private equity firm Taurus Investment Holdings and Northbridge Asset Management.

Unlike previous quarters, skilled nursing deals represented a majority of fourth quarter M&A, in terms of both transactions (52%) and properties (more than 70%). «Average skilled nursing occupancy plummeted during the pandemic, but federal relief has stabilized many facilities’ bottom lines. Also, both residents and staff have been among the first to receive the vaccine. These factors have given buyers the green light to start acquiring value-add facilities again,» added Swett. Once again, assisted living and memory care made up the majority of the seniors housing deals, or 51%, followed by independent living with 17% of the share, affordable seniors housing with 16%, active adult with 10% and CCRCs accounting for 5% of the seniors housing deals.

All long-term care M&A deals dating back to 1993 can be accessed on the Deal Search Online database and can be purchased via a site license. All quarterly results are published in The Health Care M&A Report for all 13 sectors of health care, which is part of the HealthCareMandA.com. In addition, annual results of the seniors housing and care acquisition markets were published last year in the 25th Edition of The Senior Care Acquisition Report. The comprehensive report has 400 pages of transaction details and valuation statistics in a two-volume set, separated out by seniors housing and skilled nursing. The 26th Edition will be available by March 2021. For information, or to order the reports, call 800-248-1668. Irving Levin Associates was established in 1948 and has headquarters in New Canaan, Connecticut. The company publishes research reports and newsletters and maintains databases on the healthcare and seniors housing M&A markets.

From April through October 2022, guests can embark on Holland America Line’s cruises to Alaska aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam and Zuiderdam. Holland America Line is the only cruise line that extends land tour options up to the unspoiled reaches of Canada’s Yukon Territory.

«It’s incredible to think that Holland America Line has been taking guests to Alaska longer than it’s been a state, and because 2022 is our 75th year, we want to allow plenty of time for guests to plan ahead,» said Gus Antorcha, Holland America Line’s president. «Alaska is a destination where if you’ve never been, it’s on your bucket list; and if you have been, you’re eager to go back. There’s a reason we’ve won several awards naming us number-one in Alaska, and it’s because we are Alaska. Come celebrate our 75th Anniversary with us.»

UK on the cusp of a transport revolution, as self-driving vehicles set to be worth nearly 42 billion pounds by 2035

PR Newswire

LONDON, 13 January 2021 /PRNewswire Policy/ —

Report revealing the full economic value of self-driving vehicles in the UK released.

The full economic value of self-driving vehicles in the UK has been revealed, as Transport Minister Rachel Maclean sets out that the connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) market could be worth 41.7 billion pounds by 2035.

Addressing the CES technology conference today, Minister Maclean is set to unveil a report, conducted by researchers at the Connected Places Catapult, Element Energy and Cambridge Econometrics. The report forecasts that in 2035, 40% of new UK car sales could have self-driving capabilities, with a total market value of 41.7 billion pounds – setting the future of self-driving vehicles further within Great Britain’s grasp.

This could in turn create nearly 40,000 skilled jobs in the CAV technology area, strengthening the UK economy and reinforcing this government’s commitment to building back greener and stronger.

Transport Minister Rachel Maclean said:

«The investment in and development of CAVs could truly transform the way people and goods are transported, with innovation like this at the heart of our ambition to build back better.

«We’re on the cusp of a driving revolution. Not only could this tech unlock vast opportunities for the UK economy and jobs market, it could significantly improve the safety and efficiency of how we travel over the coming decades.»

Since 2015, government has worked to make the UK one of the best places in the world to develop and deploy CAV technology.

Government has already invested 200 million pounds into CAV research and development (R&D), helping British start-ups develop their tech for use both in the UK and internationally.

Together with industry, this investment has led to many successes.

UK start-ups that have received government R&D support, including Five and Oxbotica, have gone on to successfully raise tens of millions of dollars in private investment, competing internationally with some of the world’s largest self-driving vehicle companies.

In 2020, Oxbotica launched Project Endeavour, which will be running highly automated trials in Oxford, London and Birmingham. The project will demonstrate automated driving in a variety of urban and city environments and will develop models with local authorities and communities to help them prepare for the future launch of automated vehicle services.

Several government-backed CAV trials have also successfully demonstrated world-leading capabilities in recent years, such as the Streetwise project in London in 2019, which saw self-driving vehicles carrying commuters to and from work.

The ambition to make the UK the best place in the world to deploy CAVs is also being realised through work to update UK law and regulations to make sure that the technology can be safely used on UK roads. In August 2020, government announced a consultation to enable the use of Automated Lane Keeping Systems – an early form of automation in vehicles – on UK roads as early as this year. The response to this consultation is set to be published in early 2021.

Lord Grimstone, Minister for Investment at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, said:

«Self-driving vehicles represent a huge economic opportunity for the UK, unlocking much-needed jobs and economic growth.

«Government is backing business to realise this – driving forward the future of the UK’s automotive and technology sectors and helping us build back better.»

Nicola Yates, CEO of Connected Places Catapult, said:

«CAV technologies have the potential to revolutionise transport. Designed in the right way, a system of connected autonomous vehicles could make our transport network more accessible, safer, more efficient and better for the environment. Connected Places Catapult has been pleased to partner with stakeholders across government, industry and academia over several years to make sure that the UK is one of the best places in the world for CAV development. This new report, developed in partnership with Element Energy and Cambridge Econometrics, shines a light on the economic opportunities for a UK CAV industry.»

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Today, the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee passed House Bill 38, a desperate attempt to gerrymander our Commonwealth’s courts. The officers of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, President Rick Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder, issued the following joint statement:

«Judicial gerrymandering further fractures our democracy. Statewide judges make decisions that impact all Pennsylvanians, and all Pennsylvanians should have an equal say in who holds these positions of power. In a democracy, voters choose our leaders, not the other way around. We vehemently oppose the distortion and gerrymandering of Pennsylvania’s court system, proposed in House Bill 38.»
