Scania introduces disengageable tandem axle

SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden., Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Scania now introduces the RB662 tandem bogie axle with an optional lift-and-disengage function. The new option, when engaged, can save up to 6 percent on fuel, depending on operation, and reduces the turning radius. Lifting takes less than 25 seconds and, with normal chassis height and tyres, ground clearance is nearly 70 mm.

«This is a highly desired function from customers in certain applications, and I’m pleased to announce this very neat solution,» says Bo Eriksson, Product Manager, Scania Trucks. «When unladen, the difference in fuel consumption can be up to 6 percent depending on the operation. That is substantial, especially when considering a return leg of 150 to 200 kilometres, as is often the case with timber trucks in Sweden. And, on top of that, you also get less tyre wear and increased manoeuvrability.»

The liftable and disengageable tandem bogie (LDTA) requires air suspension and will increase the trucks kerb weight by 60 kg. Most of the fuel savings can be attributed to the reduced friction inside the second (disconnected) axle gearing and only some 10 percent of the saving derives from reduced rolling resistance. Three bogie weights – 19, 21 and 26 tonnes – are available and load limits with the second axle lifted are 9.5, 10.5 and 13 tonnes respectively.

A «dog clutch» connection is part of the option that makes Scania’s tandem axle RB662 both liftable and disengage¬able, thus offering substantial fuel savings, reduced tyre wear and much tighter turning radiuses.

The LDTA option can presently not be combined with hub reduction axles or tridem configurations. The driver raises the axle by simply turning a knob. A pop-up warning appears in the instrument cluster if the truck identifies an overload situation, in which case it will not lift the axle. The lifting can be called for at any speed. The disengage-ment itself is performed via a «dog clutch» connection.

«We definitely expect that this option will be included in many truck specifications,» says Eriksson. «The added cost will rapidly be compensated given the obvious and highly positive contribution to our customers’ total operating economy.»

The patent, the first one that the Spanish listed corporation receives in 2021, has legal validity for 20 years.

This is also the first patent the business wins in the Dominican Republic and the 196th that has been granted to the company worldwide.

«Latin America is a key market for us, and receiving our first patent in the Dominican Republic is a key piece in order to consolidate our operation in the region,» Sisco Sapena, CEO and founder of the company, explained

This patent describes the method that allows the firm to demonstrate the reception of an email, with its content, its destination and the moment it was delivered to the server.

It is the method used by some Lleida.net clients, such as the Spanish Football League, «La Liga», in the management of TV rights, as well as by other financial entities.

Lleida.net is recognized in the Dominican Republic, since the end of 2019, as an SMS and telecommunications operator.

In the region, the organisation has significant operations in Colombia and Peru.

It is listed in the OTCQX index in New York, as well as in BME Growth in Madrid and Euronext Growth in Paris.

So far, more than 50 countries have recognized with almost two hundred patents the notification methods and certified electronic signature of Lleida.net, founded in 1995.

«The concession of this patent shows again Lleida.net’s commitment to R&D investment. For us, protecting the value of our intellectual property assets is the key to guarantee profitability to our shareholders,» added Sapena.

The company, which has operations in 19 countries, has become in the last years the main European actor in the eSignature sector.

Currently, its patented methods are recognized as legally valid by the authorities of more than 75 countries.

Last week, Lleida.net announced that the national postal company of United Arab Emirates, Emirates Post, will market all its electronic signature and certified electronic notification services in the country in an exclusive long-term agreement.

Remote Start App Makes Car Sharing Easier with Contactless Key Handoff

SEATTLE, Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — While travel and vacation were halted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, car sharing has remained relevant with commuters seeking alternatives to public transportation. However, car sharing users, both vehicle owners and renters, continue to face hurdles that prevent a smooth and safe rental experience.

First and foremost, there’s the issue of the vehicle’s key. Currently, vehicle owners’ only two methods of key handoff are to meet renters in-person or to stow away the key somewhere on the outside of the vehicle. The former presents social distancing concerns and the latter subjects the vehicle to threats of theft and key tampering. Additionally, «smash-and-grab» break-ins continue to plague vehicles parked in public places for extended periods of time awaiting rental pickup. Vehicle owners that monetize their vehicles are faced with the dilemma of choosing between convenience and safety.

Firstech, the Seattle-based maker of the DroneMobile remote car starter app, has announced that its April 2021 app update will offer vehicle owners and renters both safety and convenience with new car sharing and key management capabilities.

The upcoming DroneMobile app update will enable the use of the company’s patented KL1 KeyLocker hardware. KeyLocker is an LTE-enabled key management and storage system that makes key handoff as easy as sending an invite to a renter’s email. Upon acceptance of the invitation, renters can instantly see the vehicle’s parking spot and start their trip using only their smartphone. Meanwhile, vehicle owners receive alerts notifying them of successful pickup and drop-off. (During the rental, vehicle owners cannot track or control the vehicle without ending the renter’s access.)

KeyLocker fits into most vehicle compartments and has a sliding door mechanism for safely storing any type of vehicle key. While a vehicle’s key is stored in a KeyLocker, the system activates anti-tampering security sensors around KeyLocker and the outside of the vehicle. These sensors can only be disarmed using the DroneMobile app, which works over LTE from unlimited range. If a vehicle utilizes a «smart» key with push-to-start capabilities, KeyLocker can enable and disable the detection of that key so that it does not need to be removed throughout the duration of the rental. In this case, drivers would use their smartphone as the key for driving the vehicle.

Firstech’s KeyLocker also includes a touchpad as backup in the event of poor cellular coverage or dead smartphone battery.

Firstech describes the DroneMobile app update as «enabling safer and easier car sharing for everyone.» While the DroneMobile app won’t offer a marketplace to reserve car shares, the company hopes to fill a void for vehicle owners that scale their car sharing operations on other platforms.

In order to enjoy DroneMobile car sharing, vehicle owners should visit an Authorized DroneMobile dealer to have their KeyLocker and LTE hardware installed. Parts and pricing may vary by vehicle. To find a dealer near you, please visit http://www.dronemobile.com/find-a-dealer. All car sharing and key management features will be included for all DroneMobile Premium subscribers, with plans as low as $5.99/month.

HOUSTON, Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Plant-based omega-3 pioneers, Qualitas Health, DBA iwi, announces it has secured $10 million in venture funds at a $73million post-money valuation. The investment round is being led by world-class foodTech investor PeakBridge VC, Malta, together with Arancia Group, a privately owned Mexico-based food ingredient/food service conglomerate, Minrav (the company’s largest investor) and additional private investors. Additional convertible notes held by Minrav Holdings, Sasa, Trucent and other single investors are converted to equity.  The investment will accelerate customer acquisition, and commercialization of the company’s unique plant-based protein. The funds will also be used to deepen its strong clinical science and IP and accelerate its expansion into additional geographies.

iwi is a globally renowned producer of the highest absorption polar lipid EPA omega-3 marketed direct-to-consumer and to retailers in the US market. iwi disrupted the algae-farming paradigm by growing its distinctive microscopic algae in cultivation pond systems the size of football stadiums built on non-arable land in the pristine deserts of New Mexico and Texas.

Unique to iwi’s process is that it relies on saltwater, with the sun as the main source of energy and places zero strain on the natural ecosystem. This allows iwi to cleanly cultivate immense amounts of the ancient sea vegetable Nannochrolopsis. This algae is one of the few existing plants that contains all of the essential amino acids — the building blocks of proteins — plus vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, and essential fatty acids, especially omega-3. The process reflects the company’s desire to bring sustainable nutritious food solutions to feed the growing global population.

«This investment will be instrumental to accelerating growth in 2021 as iwi advances to the industrial pilot stage of our unique plant-based protein, start the regulatory process, and conduct additional clinical studies,» says Miguel Calatayud, CEO of Qualitas Health. «This uniquely sourced, complete plant protein will be ready for commercialization in 2022.»

Qualitas Health currently produces proprietary, clinically proven, high-absorption omega-3. It markets 15 supplement SKUs under the iwi brand in the US, including soft gels and functional gummies. iwi has built a strong direct-to-consumer platform (DTC), and has an additional presence in more than 5,000 US retailer outlets.

«This new investment round is a significant milestone for our company,» adds Calatayud. «We are fortunate to have such prominent partners join us in our journey and we are grateful to our existing and new shareholders for their commitment and ongoing support. iwi experienced significant growth in 2020 with online sales, and strong sales growth is forecast to continue in 2021.»

«Qualitas ticks all the boxes for meeting our investment criteria,» contributes Nadav Berger, co-founder and Managing Partner of PeakBridge. «It has strong intellectual property, proven scaling capabilities, and tremendous sustainability impact — all of which give iwi a unique edge within the plant-based nutrition industry. We welcome Qualitas and its new and existing investors to the PeakBridge family.»

«PeakBridge is far more than a VC fund,» adds Yoni Glickman, Chairman of Qualitas. «PeakBridge, together with our additional new investors, brings decades of knowledge, expertise, and food industry networking, and Arancia is an industry leader with a long heritage of operational excellence and innovation. They also add significant value to our company. We warmly welcome our new partners and look forward to executing our ambitious plans together.»

About PeakBridge

PeakBridge was founded by Erich Sieber and Nadav Berger. Both spent their entire professional lives in the food industry and have raised and managed funds in the foodTech space prior to creating PeakBridge. Schneider Electric Unveils New Sustainable Energy Products at CES 2021

BOSTON, Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced at CES 2021 the expansion of their Wiser smart home ecosystem, furthering discussion around the Smart and Sustainable Home. The Wiser range marks a significant step forward to create affordable, sustainable, energy efficient, resilient and personalized homes.

Anchored by the Square D™ Energy Center, these industry-first products enable unprecedented residential insights and monitoring capabilities for homeowners to control and lower their home’s energy consumption and electrical heating and cooling costs by up to 50%.

«Our homes are expected to become the single largest greenhouse gas emitters over the next decade,» said Manish Pant, Executive Vice President, Home and Distribution Division at Schneider Electric. «As consumers equip their homes with more connected devices, the ability to control and manage home energy consumption will be non-negotiable. A secure, interoperable power management system is key to ensuring consumers live sustainably even at home, by keeping energy cost and CO2 emissions to a minimum. Our new product empowers consumers to make better energy choices, and to take active control over their energy needs.»

The Square D™ Energy Center, as part of the Wiser ecosystem of solutions, can now help combat the likelihood of homes becoming the single largest greenhouse gas emitters over the next decade, by transforming homes from simply smart to smart and sustainable. It’s a major step towards enabling net zero, self-sufficient homes, and bringing sustainable energy choices directly to consumers. By connecting a smart thermostat, a smart meter, a back-up generator and a solar inverter with an AI-driven energy management system, the Square D™ Energy Center takes a proactive energy management approach, addressing key pain points of resilience and effective energy management in the home.

2021 Product Introductions & Extensions

As part of a rising consumer demand and market appetite for sustainable, smart and efficient homes, Schneider Electric is unveiling the following as part of the new Square D™ Energy Center at CES in 2021:

  • Control home energy loads from grid-to-plug: All electrical energy from the home and grid now converges in a single panel where load control is managed directly: from grid to plug. From swimming pools to heating to appliances, like freezers and washing machines, in two parts: critical and normal loads. If an outage is caused by adverse weather, for example, the panel switches to ‘critical load’ mode. At this point, it decides if appliances like the fridge are ‘essential’, then the energy supply is switched to these appliances only.
  • Resiliency through different sources: The Square D™ Energy Center seamlessly enables the convergence, scalability, and optimization of residential distributed energy resources, including utility power, solar power, energy storage, future smart home devices and generators. With digital control from a single app, the power source can be changed to ensure resiliency and to reduce costs.
  • Charging without being over-charged: The Square D™ Energy Center panel can monitor solar energy usage and track against the costs of utility power to optimize energy sourcing to reduce costs. For example, electric vehicles are high load and expensive to charge if you need to do so at peak time. The Square D™ Energy Center panel can help to manage these costs by identifying the best time of day to charge your vehicle or switch to solar for charging to avoid higher energy rates.
  • Intuitive installation and usage: The Square D™ Energy Center embeds seamlessly into properties, integrating batteries and energy measurements from both the grid and the home. There’s no need to make a gateway or new protocols as it fits straight in with existing home energy management systems, controlled by the homeowner from a single app. Electricians can save installation time as the pre-wired panel arrives already assembled.

SEOUL, South Korea, Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Kia’s flagship SUV, the all-new Sorento, has made a strong start to the year, being named ‘Large SUV of the Year’ at the 2021 What Car? Car of the Year Awards.

Kia’s flagship SUV, the all-new Sorento, has made a strong start to the year, being named ‘Large SUV of the Year’ at the 2021 What Car? Car of the Year Awards.

Up against worthy competition in the Large SUV category, the What Car? judging panel chose the Sorento for its impressive fuel economy, driving dynamics, high levels of standard specification, and exceptional build quality.

The variant chosen by the judges at What Car? was the 1.6 T-GDi Hybrid in the UK’s ‘2’ specification, packed full of standard features such as a Reversing Camera System, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and Forward Collision Avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist and junction detection.

Commenting on the Sorento win, Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car? magazine said: «The Sorento’s hybrid tech combines good real-world fuel economy with comparatively low CO2 emissions, while the ride is comfortable and the steering accurate. Throw in a nicely made and well-equipped interior, a driving position that’s lofty enough to make HGV drivers jealous and Kia’s unmatched seven-year warranty, and the Sorento is an outstanding all-rounder.»

Won-Jeong Jeong, President at Kia Motors Europe commented: «It is always a great honour to receive awards for the vehicles that we produce, and particularly from such well-known and highly regarded publications as What Car? magazine. The fourth-generation Sorento is a car we are very proud of, particularly as it represents the first application of electrified power in our flagship SUV.»

The all-new Sorento has only been on sale in Europe for a short time, yet has already cemented itself as an important halo product in the Kia line-up, having also won ‘Car of the Year’ in the UK’s Carbuyer 2021 awards.

The all-new Sorento range is available across Kia’s European dealer network, with powertrain options (depending on market) including hybrid, diesel and plug-in hybrid. All models are sold in Europe with Kia’s industry-leading seven-year, 150,000-kilometre warranty.

ALMA, Mich., Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Consumers Energy announced Gratiot Farms Wind Project is operational and contributing 150 megawatts of clean, renewable energy to customers in Michigan.

«We are excited to have completed construction and bring Gratiot Farms online to serve customers. Each kilowatt we generate from renewable sources such as the wind gets us closer to our Clean Energy Plan goal of a net-zero carbon energy future,» said Dennis Dobbs, vice president of enterprise project management, engineering and services for Consumers Energy. «We are committed to be good neighbors in Gratiot County, where our project is providing substantial local tax revenue and well-paying jobs.»

Gratiot Farms Wind Project went online December 16 and features 60 turbines with a 150-megawatt capacity, enough to power about 58,000 residents. Consumers Energy acquired the project from Enel Green Power America, which started the development of the wind farm. Consumers Energy took ownership and responsibility for completing construction of the project in September 2019.

Approximately 250 workers were employed during the construction of Gratiot Farms. A team of 10 highly trained full-time employees will operate the electric generation facility from a newly established service center in Middleton, Michigan, scheduled to be completed by late February.

Gratiot Farms represents a $260 million investment in Michigan’s clean energy infrastructure. It joins Lake Winds Energy Park in Mason County and Cross Winds Energy Park in Tuscola County as wind energy projects Consumers Energy owns and operates.

Combined, the three Consumers Energy wind energy parks produce enough clean, renewable energy to power about 185,600 residents.

Consumers Energy created a video to provide the public the opportunity to take a virtual tour of their new wind energy park and see what goes into constructing a large-scale wind farm. Those interested in watching construction activity and hearing from those directly involved in building Gratiot Farms Wind Energy Park can access the online video here.

Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan calls for eliminating coal as an energy source, achieving net-zero carbon emissions and meeting 90% of customers’ energy needs through clean sources like renewable energy, energy waste reduction and energy storage.

Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.7 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
