LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — For many, the pandemic has resulted in devastating life events ranging from unemployment, loss of homes, and food insecurity – but for some, the pandemic has provided an opportunity for a fresh start, especially in the new year.

Chrysalis client and National Health Foundation staff member Paul serving snacks to guests at NHF's Project Roomkey site.

In May of 2020, National Health Foundation (NHF) launched a temporary recuperative care site as part of Project Roomkey – a statewide initiative to house individuals living on the streets to curb the spread of COVID-19. To staff the site, NHF partnered with Chrysalis, a local non-profit dedicated to serving low-income individuals and those experiencing homelessness as they transition back into the workforce.

«Through our partnership with Chrysalis, individuals are gaining valuable personal and professional skills, opening up the door to roles in the healthcare field that may not have been otherwise accessible to them,» shares National Health Foundation President & CEO, Kelly Bruno.

«The people we serve are our neighbors, friends, and family members who are among those at the greatest risk of experiencing the devastating health and economic effects of the pandemic,» reports Chrysalis President & CEO, Mark Loranger. «Hiring opportunities with the National Health Foundation provide a key that will unlock not just a job that will keep them financially secure during this unsettling time, but also open the door to a new path for their lives.»

Throughout the pandemic, 13 temporary employees have transitioned into full-time roles at National Health Foundation as Guest Service Associates. In this role, they continue to provide support services to guests at NHF’s permanent recuperative care sites in Pico-Union and Mid-City. For some, it is providing an opportunity to use their life experience in service to those currently experiencing homelessness. For others, like Dwona Beroit, this job is granting her the opportunity to explore other careers in healthcare like social work.

«Chrysalis is truly a blessing to me because without them I would have never been connected to National Health Foundation. Thanks to NHF, I have found my passion in helping others and am currently pursuing a degree in social work. I want to help others the same way Chrysalis and NHF helped me,» shares Chrysalis client and NHF staff member Dwona Beroit.

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, Jan. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA) the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia has been awarded the Diamond status by APEX Health Safety powered by Simpliflying for the airline’s efforts in ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitization across its operations.

Saudia Receives Diamond Status For Flight Health Safety

The APEX Diamond Status from the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) is an accolade which recognizes industry leadership and stewardship in ensuring that the airline is deploying stringent measures in safety and protection from COVID-19.

Speaking about the latest award presented to SAUDIA, Chief Executive Officer Captain Ibrahim S. Koshy said: «SAUDIA places the safety of its guests and team members with highest importance and is committed to exemplary, rigorous sanitization protocols for every step of the journey.

Captain Koshy continued: «Safety is paramount. Our team is dedicated to excellence and is ready to provide SAUDIA’s signature hospitable service onboard while following the coronavirus safety measures which the airline has instituted.»

«SAUDIA’s rise to become a 2021 APEX Five Star airline has now been further advanced by reaching the pinnacle Diamond-level of hospital-grade health safety for the wellbeing of every customer,» APEX CEO Dr. Joe Leader stated.

«With APEX’s 42-years serving as a global non-profit dedicated entirely to advancing airline passenger experience, SAUDIA’s commitment to customer care has never shined as brightly as proven now by SimpliFlying exhaustive, scientifically-based review.»

«SAUDIA has raised the bar for health safety standards in the industry by initiatives such as the brand partnership with Dettol and sanitisation of lavatories after each use. Taking such hospital-grade in ensuring health safety goes a long way in bolstering trust among travellers,» said Shashank Nigam, CEO of SimpliFlying.

A few of SAUDIA’s health and safety protocols include the following:

Digital boarding passes: All guests flying with SAUDIA are required to display a digital boarding pass at check in and boarding counters.

Full sterilization after every flight: SAUDIA utilizes UVC ultraviolet rays to sterilize its aircraft seats, to provide all means of safety and prevention for its guests and employees.

The new technology works by launching ultraviolet rays to sterilize cabin surfaces within ten minutes, in a fully medium-sized cabin. UVC sanitization protocols are in full effect after every flight.

Employee testing and kits: SAUDIA screens all frontline staff and cabin crew members prior to each flight. The airline’s cabin crew wear full PPE kits onboard, which includes:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Face masks
  • Eye shield/goggle
  • Medical gown

Social Distancing onboard: Cabin Crew and check-in team members are mindful to maintain social distancing at all the time with other Crew Members, Ground Staff and guests.

Personal Kits: All guests flying with SAUDIA receive a Dettol hygiene kit for comfort throughout their journey.

Onboard cuisine: All food and beverages distributed onboard are sealed. Cutlery and plate ware is all disposable and is presented to passengers within a safety packet.

In recent years the airline has invested significantly in its fleet of 144 narrow and widebody aircraft and operates one of the youngest fleets in the skies, with an average aircraft age of 5 years.

The airline route network includes more than 95 destinations across four continents to all 28 domestic airports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In December 2020, SAUDIA was awarded a Five-Star ranking by APEX. The APEX Official Airline Ratings™ is the first airline rating program based solely on certified passenger feedback.

Oakland Zoo President & CEO, Dr. Joel Parrott, Announces Retirement After 37 Years

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — After leading Oakland Zoo for almost four decades, President & CEO, Dr. Joel Parrott is announcing his retirement, slated for spring 2021, once the Zoo has reopened and restabilized from the current closure mandate set forth by State and County Health Departments.

Beginning his tenure in 1984 as Assistant Director and Staff Veterinarian, Dr. Parrott was appointed Zoo Director one year later. At the time, Oakland Zoo was virtually bankrupt and branded by media as one of the ten worst zoos in the U.S. for animal welfare. Dr. Parrott began by relentlessly, and successfully, rallying the City of Oakland for the financial support needed in order to save the Zoo from certain closure. At only twenty-five acres large and just fifteen employees, Dr. Parrott quickly began making improvements to the Zoo infrastructure that supported his long-term vision of the nationally accredited, award-winning, progressive, conservation and education-focused, 100-acre Zoo it is today.

«Dr. Parrott’s dedication and value to the Conservation Society of California—Oakland Zoo has been, and still is, incalculable. His guiding principles and tireless vision transformed the Zoo into the internationally known, conservation-focused, award-winning organization we know and love today. We are grateful for his leadership and we look forward to building on his incredible legacy. We’re excited for the Zoo’s and Dr. Parrott’s next chapters, and his continued engagement as a Conservation Society of California Trustee Emeritus»- Pamela Schock Mintzer, Chair, Board of Trustees.

Dr. Parrott’s vision began with ensuring the animals that lived at Oakland Zoo were the top priority: animal welfare and their habitats. Often quoted as saying «we go home every night, the animals live their lives here,» he increased staff and training, improved husbandry practices, and built new habitats and remodeled old ones for many species including tigers, lions, baboons, Sun bears, and so many more. Throughout the years, habitats and new areas continue(d) to be built, rebuilt and expanded; notably a brand new 6.5-acre African elephant habitat complete with swimming pool that enabled the elephants to roam, the Tropical Rainforest, and the African Savanna; by then almost doubling the original size of Oakland Zoo to 45 acres.

In 1990, Dr. Parrott made Oakland Zoo the first Zoo in the U.S. to adopt an animal husbandry methodology called «protected contact» in caring for the Zoo’s African elephants. The trailblazing practice proved very beneficial for elephants – prohibiting animal care staff from entering their habitat or space; because entering requires the use of a pain-inflicting instrument called a bullhook against the elephant in order to control them. With Dr. Parrott’s advocacy other U.S. zoos also began adopting the protected contact husbandry practice, and after 20 years, almost every accredited Zoo in the U.S. began using the protected contact method in their elephant husbandry. In 2014, Dr. Parrott also lobbied politically, including holding press conferences at Oakland Zoo, to have bullhook use banned in circuses, with the outcome that Ringling Bros. soon thereafter closed their doors permanently, sending their elephants to sanctuaries in Florida.

Intent to foster an appreciation for nature and wildlife in Zoo guests, rather than viewing animals as entertainment, Dr. Parrott founded an Education department in 1985 and brought it to completion in 1999 with a brand-new 17,500 sq. ft. Education Center, housing multiple classrooms and expansive auditorium. Over 50,000 students are served annually through the Zoo’s Education Department. He also founded a Conservation department, today with over twenty-five global partners and over $1.5 million donated by Zoo programs to support their efforts to save animals in the wild. In 2005 he unveiled a new and expansive Children’s Zoo, with a Wildlife Experience amphitheater enabling school groups and Zoo guests to learn more about the animals both at the Zoo and in the wild.

Dr. Parrott’s grandest vision took over two decades of planning, lobbying, fundraising, and construction to make a reality; a 56-acre expansion (bringing Oakland Zoo to a total 100 acres) opened in 2018, called the California Trail and focused on respecting and conserving our state’s wildlife, both past and present. The transformational project included building a 17,000 sq. ft, LEED Gold certified, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, opened in 2012. Accessible by ADA electric gondolas, the California Trail includes a Conservation Habitarium, California Wilds! playground highlighting various eco-zones of the state, and stunning Bay Area views from 450 feet above sea level. Its eight progressive, expansive, animal welfare-focused habitats, designed in partnership with wildlife experts, won a national Exhibit Design Award from the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums). The addition of California Trail made Oakland Zoo officially one of the four largest Zoos in California alongside San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Zoo(s).

Many of the animals brought to the California Trail are wildlife rescues, in need of a permanent home due to human-wildlife conflict circumstances. The addition of California Trail quadrupled the Zoo’s original size, doubling Zoo visitors to 970,000 in its first year and earning Oakland Zoo a place in U.S. News & World Report as a «Top 30 U.S. Zoo».

Dr. Parrott’s many achievements, including Zoo-to-Community programs to make the Zoo free and accessible to underserved communities, were recognized by Oakland’s Jobs and Housing Coalition in 2019, where he was chosen to receive the 2019 Legacy Award, recognizing ‘blazing business and civic leaders.’

Most recently, Dr. Parrott’s passion for conservation of wildlife in wild places has only grown. To better reflect the Zoo’s mission and evolving purpose for conservation, in 2018 the legal name of Oakland Zoo’s managing entity was changed from the East Bay Zoological Society to the Conservation Society of California. His focus in recent years includes a new wildlife restoration program named the Iinnii Initiative, in partnership with WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and the Blackfeet Nation of Montana. The effort entails to restore free-ranging, genetically pure and diverse bison to Blackfeet land and Glacier National Park. After his retirement, Dr. Parrott hopes to continue and focus more work in the conservation and restoration of wildlife in our National Parks system.

Nik Dehejia, a fifteen year-veteran of Oakland Zoo and currently serving as its Executive Vice President, has been named as successor to Dr. Parrott, serving under his mentorship for several years. Also deeply invested in wildlife conservation and well-established in running many Zoo operations, Dehejia was voted unanimously by Oakland Zoo’s Board of Trustees to succeed Dr. Parrott as the new President & CEO once he retires in the coming months.

«Joel has consistently set the example in delivering on our mission of inspiring respect for and stewardship of the natural world. He has been tireless in pursing excellence in saving wildlife and wild places and ensuring a great place in Oakland for the community to have joyful and memorable experiences. The future of the Oakland Zoo is bright, and I look forward to working alongside so many dedicated and committed individuals and engaging further with our supportive community of supporters,» said Nik Dehejia.

To honor Dr. Joel Parrott, for making possible Oakland Zoo as it is today, and to ensure the continuation of his legacy of connecting people and wildlife, the Oakland Zoo and the Conservation Society of California will designate him a lifelong Trustee Emeritus of the Board of Directors. In addition, along with the previously named ‘Dr. Joel Parrott Overlook’ at California Trail’s thirteen-acre bison habitat, Flamingo Plaza, at the Zoo’s main entrance, will be renamed «Parrott Plaza.» Lastly, in accordance with Dr. Parrott’s devotion to animal welfare, a fund for habitat improvement work has been established, entitled the «Joel J. Parrott Habitat Advancement Fund.»

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Secure Futures Solar, a commercial-scale solar power developer based in Staunton, Va., has recently opened an office to offer distributed solar power systems to schools, hospitals and businesses in North Carolina. The new office will be staffed by two veterans of solar power and energy businesses. The Charlotte office will seek to develop the substantial untapped market for commercial solar power in one of the nation’s top three solar states.

The Tarheel State currently ranks third behind California and Texas for solar capacity, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association of America. However, in contrast to California and Texas, which each boast a balanced mix of solar power from the three major sources – homes, commercial entities and electric utilities — the vast majority of solar installations in North Carolina are owned and operated by monopoly utilities. Commercial-scale solar represents less than five percent of total solar capacity in North Carolina.

«Utility companies have made great strides in providing clean solar power through the electric grid in North Carolina,» said Ryan McAllister, Chief Executive Officer of Secure Futures. «But distributed solar at commercial scale has faced significant barriers in the state. Secure Futures is now introducing a practical way for schools, hospitals and businesses in North Carolina to enjoy the financial benefits of generating their own solar power right on site.»

Thanks to a strong Renewable Portfolio Standard and other public policy encouraging clean energy, North Carolina has installed 6,487 megawatts of solar generating capacity, providing 7 percent of the state’s total electric power as of late 2020. The state boasts enough solar panels to run the equivalent of nearly 800,000 homes. Prices of solar installations have fallen 45 percent over the last 5 years, allowing more than 200 solar companies to create 6,617 jobs in the state as of late last year, according to SEIA.

Despite all these gains, high upfront cost to customers has prevented the growth of distributed solar power in North Carolina. Distributed solar offers benefits not available from centralized, utility-scale solar including money savings to customers, positive environmental impact and adding resilience to the electric grid. A 2017 law authorized solar leasing, offering homeowners along with schools, hospitals and businesses the opportunity to host a solar energy system on site with no upfront capital cost.

Secure Futures is among a handful of providers authorized by the North Carolina Utilities Commission to offer distributed solar power through the state’s solar equipment leasing program. Through its proprietary Solar Self-Generation Agreement®, the company is the only commercial-scale solar provider in North Carolina to offer a modified version of leasing with benefits to the customer not available through a traditional lease.

«Leasing doesn’t allow customers to benefit from the largest incentive available to go solar, federal tax credits to purchase solar equipment,» said CEO McAllister. «This is especially hard on non-taxable schools, hospitals and local governments, which cannot qualify for the tax incentive even if they choose to buy their own solar equipment.»

Unlike traditional leasing agreements, the SGA® allows Secure Futures to pass along savings from the federal Solar Investment Tax Credit to tax-exempt customers. The solar ITC was recently extended by Congress through 2022 at a rate of 26 percent.

Secure Futures will offer on-site solar power by SGA® financing in North Carolina through its new Charlotte office, staffed by two veterans of solar power and energy.

Joe DeRado will serve as Business Development Director for the whole company, supervising sales staff in the three states currently served by Secure Futures. Formerly Vice President of Market Development for Sun FundED, a service company in Indianapolis focused on helping K-12 schools go solar, DeRado also worked for Constellation Energy and Direct Energy Business.

«I’m looking forward to help local governments, hospitals and businesses in North Carolina save money with a new option for on-site solar power at no upfront capital cost. With my background in energy for education, I’m also eager to connect schools with innovative classroom programs to provide students with hands-on experience in solar power and clean energy,» said DeRado.

North Carolina native Jeff Gowdy will serve as Business Development Associate in Charlotte. Gowdy holds a Solar Photovoltaic Certification from Everblue and previously worked as a solar installer. Currently, he is enrolled in a remote program to earn a master of engineering degree in Space Operations from the University of Colorado, uniting his interest in clean energy with a lifelong love of space exploration.
