Volta Trucks selects Proterra to supply the vehicle battery for the full-electric Volta Zero

LONDON and BURLINGAME, Calif., Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Volta Trucks, the full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer, has selected Proterra, a leading innovator in commercial vehicle electrification technology, as the battery supplier for the Volta Zero. The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built, full-electric 16-tonne commercial vehicle designed specifically for inner city freight distribution.

<div class="PRN_ImbeddedAssetReference"…

LONDON and BURLINGAME, Calif., Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Volta Trucks, the full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer, has selected Proterra, a leading innovator in commercial vehicle electrification technology, as the battery supplier for the Volta Zero. The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built, full-electric 16-tonne commercial vehicle designed specifically for inner city freight distribution.

This significant contract completes Volta Trucks’s strategic sourcing of the electric powertrain. Volta Zero vehicles are scheduled to start customer trials later in 2021, with tens of thousands of trucks expected on the roads soon after series production starts around 12 months later.

The Proterra-supplied battery will give the Volta Zero a real-world range of 200kms on a single charge. This distance is more than enough for most inner city logistics and distribution vehicles which spend most of their operating time in slow-moving start / stop traffic. The Proterra battery pack delivers industry-leading energy density and a customizable design. This allows the battery in the Volta Zero to be located between the chassis rails – its safest possible location for the design.

The collaboration represents US-based Proterra’s entry into the European truck market. Proterra’s battery technology has been proven over 17 million miles driven by its own transit vehicles and has also been chosen by other world-class commercial vehicle manufacturers to electrify delivery vans, school buses, coaches, low-floor shuttles, and construction equipment.

Proterra batteries feature passive and active safety features, liquid thermal conditioning, and adheres to state-of-the-art functional safety standards, including ISO 26262 (up to ASIL C). The Proterra battery is designed to deliver over 4,000 recharge cycles over 10 years, without significant degradation, to ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

Jack Allen, Proterra Chief Executive Officer, said; «Embracing clean, quiet transportation for all not only benefits how we move people around cities and towns, but also how we provide goods and services to the communities we live in. Proterra is excited to work with Volta Trucks as we accelerate the transition to 100% clean transportation and deliver Proterra Powered clean energy vehicles to communities across Europe

Gareth Joyce, President of Proterra Powered and Energy, added; «Proterra and Volta Trucks share a common vision of clean, healthy communities served by zero-emission, electric vehicles. We look forward to building our relationship together as we support Volta Trucks in the development of the revolutionary Volta Zero commercial vehicle.»

Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, Rob Fowler, concluded; «I’m delighted to welcome Proterra – a world-class innovative engineering partner – to the supply chain for the Volta Zero. When talking to our extensive group of customers, vehicle range is uppermost in their minds as it sits at the heart of the vehicle’s ability to deliver for them. It was therefore imperative that we work with an industry-leader to ensure the quality, longevity, and safe performance of the battery. Proterra’s cutting-edge but well-proven battery technology perfectly delivers all of this for us and our customers.»

About the Volta Zero.
The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built full-electric 16-tonne vehicle designed for inner-city freight deliveries, reducing the environmental impact of freight deliveries in city centres. Designed from the ground up with an operating pure-electric range of 150 – 200 kms (95 – 125 miles), the Volta Zero will eliminate an estimated 180,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2025.

Safety is also at the heart of Volta Trucks, with its ambition of being the safest large commercial vehicle manufacturer. The Volta Zero was designed for electric from the outset, which facilitates a step-change in vehicle, driver and pedestrian safety. Thanks to the removal of the internal combustion engine, the operator of a Volta Zero sits in a central driving position, with a much lower seat height than a conventional truck. This combination, plus a glass house-style cab design, gives the driver a wide 220-degrees of visibility, minimising dangerous blind spots.

The prototype Volta Zero was launched in September 2020, with the first vehicles expected to be operating with customers in late 2021.

The Domino's Village at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is expected to open its doors to patient families in spring 2023.

The Domino's Village at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is expected to open its doors to patient families in spring 2023.

Advancing Cyberinfrastructure and Research Readiness Survey Results: Broadband Infrastructure Support, Workforce Development are Key Issues Facing Minority-Serving Institutions

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. and WASHINGTON, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — A nationwide survey conducted in December 2020 by the <a target="_blank"…

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. and WASHINGTON, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — A nationwide survey conducted in December 2020 by the Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC) in collaboration with Internet2 determined that there is a strong need for broadband infrastructure support and to prioritize workforce training and development investments for minority-serving institutions, including historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs).

The survey is part of a national effort to help minority-serving institutions advance the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), health, social science, and humanities education and research priorities that call for increased access to and use of data management and computing resources by the higher education community.

«These are issues that we were all well aware of within the consortium but being aware of them is not enough, we have to start doing something,» said Dr. Damian Clarke, chief information officer at Alabama A&M University, and a member of the MS-CC leadership council. «There is an immediate present need for broadband infrastructure across all minority-serving institutions. When we talk about broadband, this includes broadband that connects an institution and broadband that is distributed via wired and wireless connections across the campus.»

The survey results, released during a webinar on Feb. 3, include participation by 49 of the 101 HBCUs, 63 of the 539 minority-serving institutions, and 32 of the 38 TCUs in the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. A diverse range of professions completed the survey, including educators, researchers, cyberinfrastructure professionals, senior administrative leaders, students, leaders and staff in not-for-profits, STEM support organizations, and representatives of government agencies.

«The idea behind the survey is to provide access to data that will improve proposals that minority-serving institutions make to the funding agencies,» said Bobby Clark, director, CCIT procurement and vendor management, Clemson University. «Now we have empirical evidence to really focus on those items.»

Among the survey’s most significant findings is that connectivity, equipment, security, and access to technology were the most valued priorities that respondents favored to support the goals and objectives of research programs at minority serving institutions. Data storage, data management, and data analytic were a close second in helping institutions meet their data and research computing goals.

«A common need for all our colleges is the actual infrastructure, the hardware and connectivity, without which you can’t stand up the kinds of data, computing services, and resources that are universally being identified as essential to supporting advanced science and engineering and mathematics,» said Al Kuslikis, senior associate for strategic initiatives, American Indian Higher Education Consortium. «That infrastructure also includes data storage, data management and data analytics. The actual use of the infrastructure to inform data driven decision making and to deliver programming in research computing across all disciplines.»

Additional findings include strong support for collaboration and engagement among minority-serving institutions, the need for accessible and responsible data infrastructure for campus operations, and strong potential for data and computing to advance issues central to community culture and societal disparities.

«Collaboration is a key indicator among all respondents,» said Dr. Deborah Dent, chief information officer at Jackson State University, and a member of the MS-CC leadership council. «It’s not just the equipment, it’s also the people. It is important that our cyberinfrastructure professionals are able to communicate with each other and build a coalition to advocate for our needs as a group. There’s strength in numbers.»

WayMark Analytics, a social impact company that conducts mission-driven stakeholder mapping surveys, developed the MS-CC survey and analyzed the results. About Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium
MS-CC envisions a transformational partnership to promote advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) capabilities on HBCU, HSI, TCU, and MSI campuses, with data; research computing; teaching; curriculum development and implementation; collaboration; and capacity-building connections among institutions. The consortium emerged from a National Science Foundation funded pilot project that was awarded through Clemson University: NSF OAC #1659297 «CC* Cyber Team: Cyberinfrastructure Empowerment for Diverse Research, Scholarship, and Workforce Development (CI Empower).» This included South Carolina State, Claflin University, Jackson State and Morgan State Universities, which supported MS-CC meetings, visioning, and chartering efforts. A working group of 20 participants formed from a workshop at Georgia Tech in June 2018 that helped create a chartering document. For more information, visit www.ms-cc.org.
