McLaren unveils all-new, next-generation High-Performance Hybrid supercar – the McLaren Artura

MANAMA, Bahrain, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ —

McLaren Artura

MANAMA, Bahrain, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ —

  • McLaren’s first-ever series-production High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) supercar makes its Middle East debut today
  • Next-generation supercar blends thrilling performance, driving dynamics and engagement with pure EV driving capability
  • First model built on all-new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) contributing to best-in-class kerb weight (DIN) of just 1,498kg*
  • Revolutionary twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine combined with E-motor and energy-dense battery pack, produces 680PS (671bhp) and 720 Nm (530lb ft)
  • Improved customer offering with standard three-year service plan, five-year vehicle warranty, six-year battery warranty, 10-year body warranty

McLaren Automotive, the British creator of luxury, high-performance supercars, has revealed the long-anticipated McLaren Artura today, marking the beginning of both a new chapter for the pioneering luxury supercar company and a new era in supercar technology and performance.

Underpinned by the McLaren philosophy of super-lightweight engineering, the Artura is a distillation of every attribute inherent in a McLaren, combined with faster throttle response, lower emissions and ability to run in pure EV mode, thanks to its ground-breaking electrified powertrain.

«We are proud and honoured to showcase the all-new McLaren Artura in the Kingdom of Bahrain and on the day of its global debut. This revolutionary High-Performance Hybrid supercar marks a beginning of a new era for both McLaren Automotive and the wider supercar segment. Every drop of our engineering expertise gained across more than 50 years of racing has been poured into the Artura, to deliver a combination of breath-taking performance, driver engagement and dynamic excellence, which our brand is so renowned for. I am confident that this extraordinary creation will appeal to both our existing and new customers in the Middle East region.»

Brett Soso, Managing Director – Europe, Middle East & Africa, McLaren Automotive Ltd.

The McLaren Artura is the first model built on the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), which sets new standards for advanced and flexible chassis design and has been optimised for hybrid applications through bespoke battery compartment, domain-based ethernet electrical architecture, as well as electrical air-conditioning. The new platform compliments a wealth of additional weight-reduction measures, resulting in class-leading lightest dry weight of 1,395kg*, and a DIN kerb weight of 1,489kg*.

At the heart of the Artura’s all-new powertrain is a lightweight 2,993cc twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, paired to a bespoke eight-speed transmission and a compact e-motor, which provides the supercar with instant torque and improved throttle response. The package generates a combined power output of 680PS (671 bhp) and 720S Nm of torque, which translates to a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 488PS per tonne*, as well as truly breath-taking performance figures. The Artura’s top speed is electronically limited to 330km/h with 0-100km/h reached in just 3.0 seconds* and 0-200 km/h in 8.3 seconds*.

The Artura is designed with full Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) capability and can be charged to an 80% level in just 2.5 hours. The battery pack, comprising five lithium-ion modules, can also harvest power from the combustion engine during driving, depending on the driving mode selected. This solution provides the driver with a unique ability to enjoy the car in silent, pure EV mode with a range of up to 30km and a top speed of 130km/h.

The engineering artistry beneath the Artura’s skin is complemented by its exterior design, which gives the car a ‘shrink-wrapped’ appearance and pushes the McLaren design language seen in recent models to a new level. The technical sculpture of the car has been conceived to optimise aerodynamic performance, as well as cooling, and is driven by the McLaren design principle of ‘everything for a reason’.

Every McLaren cockpit is built around the driver, but the Artura brings a new level of meaning to that principle. The driving experience is enhanced through a new Digital Instrument Cluster mounted to the steering column, so it moves in conjunction with the steering wheel. The Artura is also the first McLaren to offer Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, as well as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which include Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Go, Road-Sign Recognition, Lane-Departure Warning and High-Beam Assist.

Peace of mind on quality and durability were core considerations with the all-new Artura and it is no surprise that its development programme was the most rigorous ever in McLaren’s history.  Available to order now from McLaren retailers, with first deliveries to customers commencing in Q3 of this year, the Artura is priced at AED 954,000 in the UAE, and in standard specification, which includes a 3-year service plan, Smartphone Integration Package and Practicality Pack as a no cost option. This pack includes Vehicle Lift, power-folding heated door mirrors with ‘Dip in Reverse’ functionality, four front and four rear parking sensors, rear-view camera, Homelink® and soft-close doors.

RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — VA Majority Makers, a new organization focused on rebuilding a Republican majority in Virginia’s State Legislature, officially launched today. After the recent Republican losses in 2017 and 2019 Garrison Coward, President for the new PAC, believes that it is time for a fresh approach that recruits and equips winning candidates in 2021:

Coward stated, «On both the state and national levels, we have seen policies implemented that limit freedoms, raise taxes, defund police, shutter schools and ultimately hurt the people they are intended to serve. To add to this, Virginians have also witnessed repeated failures to respond to a health crisis that has destroyed jobs, shut down businesses, and limited opportunities for all. Our government has settled for a status quo that does not serve everyone’s best interests, and this needs to change. In 2021, it’s time for political candidates who have an inspiring message, reflect the diverse face of Virginia, and are willing to put in the hard work to win.»

Modeled after the successful national program that helps to build Republican majorities in the U.S. House of Representatives, VA Majority Makers is a recruitment program designed to identify promising candidates across the Commonwealth of Virginia and help to fully fund and equip them for victory. Eric Cantor, former Congressman and House Majority Leader from Virginia, will serve as honorary Chairman of VA Majority Makers.

More information about the program is available at www.vamajoritymakers.gop. Any candidates seeking to run as Republicans for the Virginia House of Delegates in 2021 are encouraged to complete an online application to be considered for the program and potentially qualify for resources and support to win in November.

UK Entrepreneurs Launch «Counteract» to combat the Global Climate Crisis through Carbon Removal

LONDON, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — UK entrepreneurs and investors Matt Isaacs, Andrew Shebbeare, and Andy Bonsall today announced the launch of Counteract to combat the climate crisis through research, development, and investment in carbon removal technology. Counteract will help engineer and scientist entrepreneurs with the…

Counteract will help engineer and scientist entrepreneurs with the early stage investment, commercialisation, access to community, and communications support required to develop businesses capable of capturing or storing greenhouse gases at gigaton scale.

The company is the co-founders’ fourth venture together, having last collaborated to launch and grow the global media and technology business Essence, to date the only business ranked #1 in both The Sunday Times Tech Track and International Track league tables. Essence was acquired by WPP in 2015 and today manages over $4bn of global media spend.

Isaacs, Shebbeare, and Bonsall, who have been privately investing for several years, bring extensive expertise in venture building spanning fintech, technology, consulting and media. They are joined by former Octopus Ventures investor Caitlin Wale, bringing sustainability and low carbon solutions experience in built infrastructure and renewable energy.

To mitigate the cruelest impacts of climate change will require increasing carbon capture from 0.04 Gigatons in 2020 to 5.6 gt by 2050 according to the International Energy Agency, a growth rate faster than the oil industry peak. Counteract will support very early stage concepts and ventures across the spectrum of carbon removal solutions such as enhanced weathering, blue and soil carbon, direct air capture, afforestation/reforestation, and new sequestration channels.

Commenting on the launch, Counteract co-founder Andrew Shebbeare said: «This decade will set the trajectory for humankind’s response to climate change. Time is too short for vital innovations to get stuck in the lab or ideas to languish on paper. We know that solutions proven in theory or at pilot scale now need wide-ranging support and patient capital to break through. We are excited to launch Counteract today to help turn great ideas into scalable solutions that will make a material impact in our lifetimes.»

Shebbeare continued: «With the right effort and response, we can remove enough carbon from the atmosphere to avert enormous suffering. And we believe that for those who are willing to prioritise impact over short term returns, carbon removal also presents an extraordinary commercial opportunity. 2021 is going to be a critical year for climate solutions globally and we are excited to see the UK at the forefront with COP26 in Glasgow in November.»

With increasing investment interest and philanthropic support for climate solutions, and the carbon marketplace estimated to exceed $10B within the next five years, the market for private investments in this space is destined for significant growth. Counteract provides an important new vehicle for accelerating early stage carbon removal solutions at a critical time for the industry.

Counteract will announce a first round of investments and partnerships in the coming months.

About Counteract

Launched in February 2021, Counteract is a new carbon removal company combating the climate crisis through research, development and investment. Counteract gives engineer and scientist entrepreneurs the financial and strategic support to turn fresh ideas into self-sustaining businesses with the potential to capture or store greenhouse gases at gigaton scale.

Counteract was founded by experienced entrepreneurs and investors from the world of digital media, finance, technology and consulting, with early backgrounds in engineering, economics and material science, a shared track record of growing organizations from startup to global scale and a shared belief that business can be a profound force for good.

Twelve Journalists Recognized As 2020 SEAL Environmental Journalism Award Winners

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — With our environmental crisis intricately related to but frequently overshadowed by the dramatic political and social events of the past year, twelve journalists have been awarded a 2020 SEAL Environmental Journalism Award in recognition of their work to bring climate knowledge, justice, and action to the forefront of public discourse.

Honorees include four repeat winners: Fiona Harvey of The Guardian, Alexander C. Kaufman of Huffington Post, Dave Roberts of Volts, and Lisa Friedman of The New York Times.

First-time SEAL Environmental Journalism Award recipients include Shannon Osaka of Grist, Zoya Tierstein of Grist, James Temple of The MIT Technology Review, Brian L. Kahn of Earther, Jeff Brady of NPR, Juliet Eilperin of The Washington Post, Rhett A. Butler of Mongabay, and Mary Annaise Heglar, Freelance Climate Essayist.

The 2020 SEAL Environmental Journalism Awards were chaired by Emily Wasley, Corporate Climate Resilience Practice Leader with WSP USA. Throughout her academic and professional career, Ms. Wasley has partnered with government entities, water utilities, and Fortune 50 to 500 corporations to institutionalize climate considerations into existing risk management, business continuity, and sustainability efforts.

«Over the past several years, the field of journalism has been questioned considerably because of the amount of misinformation that exists in our globally interconnected and oftentimes volatile world. Because of this, we rely on trusted journalists for information that is based on sound science and factual evidence,» commented Ms. Wasley. «The journalists that have been identified as exemplary to receive a SEAL Award are not shying away from revealing the truth or calling out those that are further exacerbating our climate crisis. Journalism is imperative to help our society understand what is happening behind the curtain and inform them of the subsequent pain and suffering that climate change is having on our frontline communities. We must protect the field of journalism and the right to free, factual speech that is based on sound science to remain informed of the myriad of challenges and opportunities every one of us will experience today and into the future.»

Winners were selected based on a panel review of each journalist’s work, data-driven analysis of the impact and reach of their articles, and consideration for writers who are bringing fresh perspectives and social relevance to environmental issues.
