Race to reconnect; families booking Vrbo summer vacation homes earlier than ever

New Vrbo data shows combination of pandemic-influenced factors is causing an early surge in demand for vacation homes.

Travelers are locking in Vrbo properties in top summer destinations earlier in 2021 compared to the same time period in previous years. Currently, less than half of vacation homes in some top destinations are still available for July, a more than 25% increase in demand year-over-year [1].

Vrbo’s president, Jeff Hurst, points to a confluence of pandemic-influenced travel behaviors, sentiments and circumstances creating this rush, including:

  • Optimism around the vaccine: With the vaccine roll-out underway and health officials saying most people should be able to access the vaccine by late summer, families naturally want to make up for lost time and reconnect with loved ones again.
  • Planning double-cations: The growing confidence in being able to travel has led some families to already plan multiple trips this year. In fact, 44% of U.S. travelers say they will take more trips this year [2].
  • Booking longer stays: Families are planning longer trips as 39% of travelers say their next vacation will be at least a week [2] and 55% of families say they would spend more on longer stays [3]. These extended stays are filling up calendar availability and mean travelers may have fewer available dates and properties to choose from.
  • Keeping it domestic: With constantly changing restrictions on international travel, families are swapping their overseas plans with domestic trips. This is driving increased demand in U.S. destinations compared to previous years and further affects the number of available vacation homes in highly sought-after locales.
  • Flexcations going strong: Flexcations, a travel behavior that emerged in 2020 that blends work, school and family vacation time, are expected to continue in 2021. With many adults still working from home and employers announcing more flexible policies around remote work, families have the freedom to keep flexcationing. A survey conducted for Vrbo’s 2021 Trend Report shows that 67% who tried it last year would do it again [3].

How Families Can Make Planning Easier

Vrbo now offers new tools to help families planning a longer trip find properties with discounts for extended stays of a week plus or a month plus. Many hosts already offer these discounts, and Vrbo has highlighted these properties with a discount banner. Later this month, travelers will also be able to use a new search filter to find properties with extended stay discounts.

Additionally, Vrbo will soon release a new polling feature for Trip Boards that makes it even easier for families to plan their summer trips. Trip Board polls will enable everyone in the family to participate in the decision-making process on where to stay so they can quickly book their favorite properties before someone else does.

Opting for Flexibility

Families booking far in advance for summer trips should review and understand a property’s cancellation policy before booking, and they can use the «Free Cancellation» filter to search for properties that offer more flexible cancellation policies. The most flexible option allows travelers to cancel their reservation up to 14 days before check-in for a full refund, and more than half a million Vrbo properties already offer flexible cancellation policies.

NEW YORK, Feb. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As the workday ended on February 5th, developers across New Jersey finalized their applications to the second year of New Jersey’s Community Solar Pilot Program. Among them is AC Power, submitting nine projects for consideration by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU). If all projects are selected, AC Power’s portfolio will provide 19.49 MW-dc of renewable energy in the Jersey Central Power & Light service territory and 12.04 MW-dc in the Atlantic City Electric service territory, for a total of 31.53 MW-dc of solar power. Community solar projects provide residents and businesses an opportunity to save on their electricity bills while using clean, renewable energy.

Administered by the NJBPU, the three-year program will accept over 225 MW of community solar projects to help New Jersey reach its goal of generating 100% clean energy by 2050. The second year of the program is expected to award 150 MW of community solar, doubling the capacity of projects accepted in the first year. Following selection to the first year of the program, AC Power expects two projects to begin construction this spring. A 0.83 MW-dc project on a portion of the closed Kin-Buc Landfill in Edison Township and a 1.43 MW-dc project on a former sand and gravel pit in Deptford Township. AC Power hopes to expand upon these projects with selection of projects from their 31 MW portfolio. The portfolio consists of projects sited on former landfills and resource extraction sites, including a floating solar project at a flooded former quarry.

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Increased 1.4% in January

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 1.4% in January after rising 1.2% in December. In January, the index equaled 114.6 (2015=100) compared with 113.1 in December.

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 1.4% in January after rising 1.2% in December. In January, the index equaled 114.6 (2015=100) compared with 113.1 in December.

ATA recently revised the seasonally adjusted index back five years as part of its annual revision.

«Over the last four months, the tonnage index has increased a total of 3.3%, which is obviously good news,» said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. «However, the index is still off 2.8% from the high in March as tonnage plunged 9% in April alone. I continue to expect a nice climb up for the economy and truck freight as we get more economic stimulus and increased vaccination numbers.»

Compared with January 2020, the SA index fell 2.1%, which was preceded by a 2.6% year-over-year decline in December. In 2020, the index was 4% below the 2019 average.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 107.4 in January, 4.5% below the December level (112.4). In calculating the index, 100 represents 2015. ATA’s For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index is dominated by contract freight as opposed to spot market freight.

Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 72.5% of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation, including manufactured and retail goods. Trucks hauled 11.84 billion tons of freight in 2019. Motor carriers collected $791.7 billion, or 80.4% of total revenue earned by all transport modes.

ATA calculates the tonnage index based on surveys from its membership and has been doing so since the 1970s. This is a preliminary figure and subject to change in the final report issued around the 5th day of each month. The report includes month-to-month and year-over-year results, relevant economic comparisons, and key financial indicators.

The river’s protection has received regional consensus, but the plan to declare the river a protected area has been thwarted for years by state-owned Hydro-Québec, due to the waterway’s hydroelectric potential.
