COVID-19, political unrest, market volatility increase the importance of private markets in 2021 and beyond, according to Mercer research

NEW YORK, Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — New strategic research from Mercer focuses on what the coming year holds for alternatives, outlining some of the issues investors may want to follow closely in an effort to optimize their portfolios.

«We are seeing that though investors have been tested this year, the experiences of previous crises have made them more resilient. There were unorthodox challenges such as not being able to vet new managers in person, but clients continued to put capital to work, especially with existing investment manager relationships across all private market segments,» said Raelan Lambert, global head of alternatives at Mercer.

She continued, «In 2021, investors should consider stretching their risk appetites and consider their allocation to real estate. Although the pandemic will continue to challenge the property market, 2021 is likely to be an opportune time for entering the asset class with a medium- to longer-term investment horizon. Initially, investors should prioritize allocations to the largest, most-liquid markets, where price discovery is furthest along.»

The white paper, Private market challenges: Optimizing your portfolio and top considerations for private markets in 2021, includes issues such as:

  • Real estate: the state of current market conditions and opportunities to potentially capitalize on post-COVID changes.
  • Natural resources: the reasons behind the significant challenges facing the market and the opportunities inherent in the sector.
  • Infrastructure: the growth and attractive performance of the market as well as the challenges associated with managing significant market changes.
  • Private debt: how the landscape has changed from the global financial crisis to the 2020 pandemic.
  • US private equity and venture capital markets: how advice that clients receive from their legal counsels on terms and conditions could potentially misalign with managers’ interests.
  • European private equity: how the COVID-19 virus has compounded the uncertainty created by Brexit.
  • Asian private equity: the effect of the pandemic and the ongoing political tension between the US and China.

Expected Return

Actual performance may be lower or higher than the performance data quoted. Actual statistics may be lower or higher than the statistics quoted.  The expectations for the modelled portfolio are a compilation of return, volatility, and correlation expectations of the underlying asset classes.

Portfolio expectations are forward looking and reflective of Mercer’s Capital Market Assumptions, as defined by asset class and incorporating return, standard deviation, and correlations. Our process for setting asset class expected returns begins with developing an estimate of the long term normal level of economic growth and inflation. From these two key assumptions, we develop an estimate for corporate earnings growth and the natural level of interest rates. From these values, we can then determine the expected long term return of the core asset classes, equity and government bonds. We combine current valuations with our expectations for long term normal valuations and incorporate a reversion to normal valuations over a period of up to five years. Volatility and correlation assumptions are based more directly on historical experience except in cases in which the market environment has clearly changed.  Manager impact on performance is not incorporated into expectations.  The views expressed are provided for discussion purposes and do not provide any assurance or guarantee of future returns.

Capitol Counsel Expansion Accelerates

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Following the 2020 elections, and at the dawn of a new Congress and Administration, advocacy powerhouse Capitol Counsel is set to add three new partners to its health care and tax policy practices.

John Jonas and Martha (Martie) Kendrick join Capitol Counsel from the law firm, Akin Gump, where they were partners, serving clients on health care and tax issues in the regulatory, legislative, and administration settings. James (Jim) Davidson comes to the firm from Polsinelli, where he advised clients on health care, tax, and communications policy.

«We are thrilled that John, Martie, and Jim are joining Capitol Counsel. Their expertise and skills will greatly complement our team,» Capitol Counsel Partner, Shannon Finley, said this morning.

John Jonas brings a deep understanding of health care, having led that practice at Akin Gump. He brings strong policy experience across the health care sector, including hospitals, emergency medical services, physician groups, and pharmaceutical companies. During a decade of public service, Jonas was an instrumental fixture in a variety of roles at the House Ways and Means Committee.

Jonas offered, «Issues come and go, but health care and taxes are always in the discussion. We will give our clients the full measure of insight, allowing them to better navigate these currently very choppy waters.»

Martie Kendrick brings over 30 years of experience representing and counseling clients before Congress in virtually every major piece of health care legislation, as well as regulatory and funding issues before agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services. Kendrick’s broad legislative advocacy experience encompasses congressional authorizing and appropriations committees, including the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means Committees.

«With our health systems and companies facing multiple challenges right now, we can expect health care policy to be a central theme in the new Administration. We are excited to be part of the debate and I look forward to getting to work on behalf of our clients,» Kendrick said.

Jim Davidson has worked on taxation, agency regulations, government information policy, consumer policy, media regulation, privacy, regulation of advertising, health care, appropriations, and budget policy. During his time on the Hill, Davidson served as the chief counsel and staff director of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Administrative Practice and Procedure, and chief counsel of the Senate Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Relations.

«There are going to be big, important debates in the coming years. I am excited about the work we can all do together,» Davidson said.

Capitol Counsel partner, former Congressman and House Ways and Means veteran, Dr. Charles Boustany, said the new team members expand the firm’s capacity and capabilities.

«These are some exceptionally talented, deeply knowledgeable people who will offer our clients the highest level of service and expand our capacity to meet the challenges in this dynamic new political environment,» Boustany said.

This is the most recent expansion for the firm as it prepares for the incoming Administration and the new Congress. In November, they announced the addition of Robert Diamond, who was Special Assistant to the President of the United States and Director of Private Sector Engagement in the Obama-Biden White House.

BOWIE, Md., Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Toyota Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association (TLMODA) is once again working with The Salvation Army to address the increasing food shortage across the country by filling the pantries of families in need during the coronavirus pandemic. On Jan. 15, 2021, TLMODA Dealers and The Salvation Army will distribute more than 1,400 food boxes at participating dealerships in Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Washington and Texas.

«Last year, we partnered with The Salvation Army to create a National COVID-19 Day of Service to support families left vulnerable by the coronavirus pandemic.  Since then, the demand for food has multiplied,» says TLMODA Board President Carlos Liriano.  «We hope this collective effort by our TLMODA members helps feed families in our communities and provides some reprieve from the economic hardships they face on a daily basis.»

During TLMODA’s National COVID-19 Day of Service, Toyota dealership staff will distribute grocery boxes of non-perishable items like boxes of cereal and canned goods to help feed a family of four, for a week.  Items for the grocery boxes will be packed and assembled by local Salvation Army teams in accordance with safety guidelines from local, state and federal health officials. An art kit will also be included with the box, as part of the Toyota Dream Car Art Contest – feeding the mind and inspiring creativity. Youth ages 4 to 15 are invited to imagine the future of mobility and submit their artwork. Full details at www.toyotadreamcarusa.com.

The Salvation Army is helping identify families in need of food and instructing them to visit one of the participating Toyota dealerships to pick up their grocery box.  In order to maintain proper social distance protocols, boxes will be placed in the trunk of each family’s vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies are exhausted.  All families must contact their local Salvation Army to qualify for a grocery box.

«The Salvation Army has seen a tsunami of need over the last year. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have provided more than 150 million meals to families in need. This was in large part thanks to the commitment of community members and partners like TLMODA and its member dealerships,» said Commissioner Kenneth Hodder, National Commander of The Salvation Army. «We know that 2021 will continue to be challenging for millions of Americans, but with the help of organizations like TLMODA, we’ll continue to meet the evolving needs of our neighbors across the country.»

TLMODA’s inaugural National COVID-19 Day of Service, in partnership with The Salvation Army, was held on May 22, 2020.

NEW YORK, Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — AIM Tell-A-Vision® Group (AIM TV) announced today that Raw Travel® is launching «Raw Travel Plus,» a new YouTube channel. The latest effort from the syndicated television show capitalizes on the show’s eight-season library of web content, travel tip vignettes, themed destination content, and behind the scenes footage.

The digital-only offering has content on the channel currently, with plans to add more daily. Raw Travel Plus will also grow to include bonus original, first-run content not seen on the TV show. The effort will also be supported by the current YouTube channel YouTube.com/RawTravelTV which serves as a promotional vehicle for the syndicated show.

«Raw Travel Plus will be much more robust than what we’ve offered in the past on YouTube, which was limited by design. At that time, we wanted to stay focused on producing content solely for broadcast syndication and international licensing,» says Executive Producer, Creator and Host, Robert G. Rose. «But now that our library is so extensive and so much of it still under or completely un-exploited, it makes sense to provide a digital outlet for that content. Raw Travel Plus will be a destination for those who crave authentic, on-demand, travel-related content, themed videos, travel tips, and eventually, never-before-seen, digital-first videos,» Rose continued.

The target audience for Raw Travel Plus is two-fold. The first is the core loyal Raw Travel linear TV viewer that wants more show content than can be offered in a half-hour television environment. Secondly, the show hopes to super-serve online users craving authentic travel content, researching new and different travel experiences and destinations post pandemic, and providing a much-needed virtual escape during the pandemic and for those unable to travel. The channel will appeal to people who may or may not know the TV show. The TV show will help grow Raw Travel Plus and vice versa.

The nationally syndicated, linear TV show currently airs each weekend in the USA on over 200 broadcast affiliates (NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, etc.) in over 173 markets in 95% of the U.S. The show enjoys multiple airings each week in many major markets. Raw Travel is currently garnering affiliate renewals for its 9th and 10th seasons, respectively, giving the green light for new episodes through 2023.

In addition to domestic growth, Raw Travel continues to expand its international footprint on various outlets worldwide. Raw Travel is also exhibited on several In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) offerings on airlines such as AmericanDelta, Air Canada, Virgin Americaand more.
