The popular brands will join a vibrant lineup of over 100,000 square feet of retail spanning three city blocks.

Opening Monday, June 8, the new 24-hour Starbucks located on Virgin MiamiCentral’s ground-floor retail promenade on the corner of 5th Street and 1st Avenue, is a partnership with JFC Miami, a black-owned, female-led dynamic food and beverage operator comprised of Managing Partner, Ramona D. The licensed Starbucks store will create approximately 25 to 30 new jobs and will open with modified operations in response to COVID-19. «With unemployment at an all-time high, we [JFC Miami] feel beyond fortunate to continue to create new jobs,» said Hall, «since the opening of our first location, we have stressed the importance of job creation in the communities that our businesses are located in.»

To celebrate the opening on Monday, June 8, Starbucks at Virgin MiamiCentral Station will offer a free Grande beverage of the customer’s choice to its first 100 guests, as well as a free reusable Starbucks cup, when the store officially opens its doors. Additionally, all first responders in uniform or with proof of relevant employment ID can receive a complimentary tall drip coffee at the location during operating hours through June 30.

In terms of design, the 2,635 square foot store will offer both indoor and outdoor covered seating with elevated decor that incorporates many elements of the upscale Starbucks Reserve finishes. A specially commissioned 12-foot mural of an abstract mermaid will welcome guests while the dark espresso walls, tufted leather seating, and warm wood finishes make the location standout among Starbucks stores in South Florida.

Slated to open mid-July, the Virgin MiamiCentral Chick-fil-A location, will be one of the development’s largest restaurants, and Miami-Dade’s sixth Chick-fil-A, comprising nearly 3,000-square feet, designed to fill the daytime population’s cravings of more than 250,000 people living and working in Downtown Miami.

«With its multitude of modalities, Virgin MiamiCentral station is a global transportation hub and a catalyst for transformative development for Downtown Miami. Our retail complex is set to be a lifestyle destination with a curated set of dining and entertainment options for all. New Report Shows Charter Schools and their Students are Most Impacted by Digital Divide, Urges Lawmakers to Act

WASHINGTON, June 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools released a new policy brief, «Charter School and Student Access to Devices and the…

WASHINGTON, June 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools released a new policy brief, «Charter School and Student Access to Devices and the Internet,» an analysis of schools and communities facing the greatest barriers in accessing remote learning opportunities. The report also calls for $243 million in annual resources necessary to bridge the gap in digital access. When schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, nearly every K-12 student in America was thrust immediately into distance learning, positioning many low-income families without access to devices and high-speed internet connections at a disadvantage. Without relief aid from Congress, the digital divide has strong potential to exacerbate achievement and attainment gaps based on income and race.

Key Findings from the Briefing Include:

  • Approximately 9 million students in the U.S. lack access to the internet or devices.
  • More than 1 in 5 charter school students and roughly 1 in 8 district school students are in a school located in a low‑access connectivity tract, suggesting that charter school students are 60% more likely to be in a school located in a low‑access census tract.
  • The estimated cost to close the digital divide gap in charter schools is $243 million.
  • In 31 of the 44 states with charter schools, 20% or more of charter school students lack connectivity.
  • The top 50 cities for low connectivity account for more than 50% of all the charter school students facing connectivity challenges.

«The spring semester came and went for millions of U.S. students without access to the internet or a digital device. We cannot afford for our most vulnerable students to remain ill equipped this fall. Failing to close the digital divide will relegate low-income families to a modern dark age, left without the digital resources available to the more affluent,» said Nina Rees, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. «Substantially more help for K-12 students must be a part of the next phase of federal relief from Congress. Students and families are counting on policymakers to shrink the digital divide before students suffer the consequences of another lost school year.»

Using the most recent American Community Survey data, the National Alliance estimates charter schools need $243 million to address unmet device and connectivity needs. Given that a higher percentage of charter school students experience low access to connectivity, and that incidence is magnified in specific states and cities, lawmakers must appropriate funds accordingly to bridge the gap. Federal, state and local governments as well as philanthropists will also need to target funds to the schools and students with the greatest needs, especially charter schools, which are disproportionately located in low-access census tracts.

PITTSBURGH, June 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, on World Oceans Day, Blue Harbor Fish Co.® is celebrating the important role that sustainable seafood plays in ensuring a healthy ocean and planet.  Blue Harbor Fish Co.®, which has been a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified sustainable seafood since 2016, provides American consumers with sustainable, wild caught albacore tuna and pink salmon packed with simple ingredients.

On this day, 140 countries come together to celebrate the role of the ocean in our everyday life, and to inspire action to protect and sustainably use marine resources.

«The choices we make have a ripple effect – like choosing sustainable seafood for a healthy ocean,» said Brian Perkins, Regional Director of the Americas for the Marine Stewardship Council. «We’re proud of Blue Harbor Fish Co.® for its ongoing dedication to providing American consumers with MSC certified sustainable seafood so they know they’re getting seafood that’s good for them and good for the ocean.»

The MSC, a global nonprofit recognized as the world’s leading certification and ecolabeling program for sustainable, wild-caught seafood, launched a new global campaign titled, ‘Little Blue Label, Big Blue Future’ to celebrate World Oceans Day and to encourage more consumers to switch to seafood certified to its rigorous ‘blue fish’ standard.

As a member of the MSC initiative, Blue Harbor Fish Co.® meets strict guidelines in which all of its products are traceable back to an MSC certified sustainable source.  All the parties in the Blue Harbor Fish Co.® supply chain, from the catch to the retailer, meet standards set by MSC to make sure Blue Harbor Fish Co.® contains only sustainable seafood.  This prevents possible seafood mislabeling or fraud and ensures that consumers are getting the product that is listed on packaging.

Oceans contain up to 80 percent of life on earth1, with seafood providing an important source of protein to more than 3 billion people across the world2. MSC certified seafood represents roughly 15% of global marine catch, demonstrating that certification is helping to grow and maintain the number of sustainable fish populations. In the US, more than 2,500 seafood products worldwide carry the MSC blue fish label.

The MSC standard was established in 1997 and is the only wild caught seafood standard and ecolabeling program to meet United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) guidelines, as well as meet Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) benchmarking criteria. The standards used to evaluate fisheries have been developed in deliberation with scientists, industry, and conservation groups, and reflect the most up-to-date fisheries science and management practices.

Dixon Dominates in Texas for Honda

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 7, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ A race that started out ominously for Honda ended in triumph, as Scott Dixon dominated tonight’s season-opener, leading 157 of 200 laps around the Texas Motor Speedway oval to score his 47th career Indy car win.

Honda's Scott Dixon dominated Saturday night's NTT IndyCar Series season-opening race, leading 157 of 200 laps to score his 47th career IndyCar win.

The first race of the 2020 NTT INDYCAR SERIES, delayed three months by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, took place without spectators and with limited crew members on a hot night in Fort Worth, Texas.  With social distancing protocols preventing Honda engineers from assisting teams during the engine starting procedure on the grid, an issue with the spec series ECU resulted in Ryan Hunter-Reay, Graham Rahal and Alexander Rossi all going at least one lap down to the leaders in the opening laps.

At the front of the field, pole qualifier Josef Newgarden took the early lead, but it soon became apparent that Dixon and his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, Felix Rosenqvist, had two of the quickest cars in the field.  Passing Newgarden for the lead on Lap 32, Dixon was rarely headed for the rest of the night, at times opening up leads of five seconds or more on the fast, 1.5-mile TMS oval.  The dominating win was the fourth for Dixon at Texas, and the 47th of his career. With the win, he tied A.J. Foyt’s record 18 seasons with at least one IndyCar victory, and extended his own consecutive season win record to 16.

Equally strong throughout the night, Rosenqvist appeared headed for a second-place finish behind his teammate, until a late-race crash while attempting to pass the lapped car of James Hinchcliffe sent Rosenqvist into the wall on Lap 191.

Behind Dixon, Zach Veach rebounded from a disappointing 2019 season with a strong run to fourth place, equaling his career-best previous Indy car finish.  Colton Herta steadily worked his way from 14th on the grid to finish seventh, while his Andretti Autosport teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay recovered from his dramas at the start to claw his way back on to the lead lap and an eighth-place result.

Making his first oval race start in any series, Indy car rookie Alex Palou was the innocent victim when his Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh Honda was collected by a spinning fellow rookie, Rinus Veekay, on Lap 36.  Hinchcliffe’s first race back with Andretti Autosport was hobbled when a wheel nut jammed during his third pit stop, dropping him off the lead lap.  Takuma Sato was unable to take the green flag after crashing his Honda in qualifying.  With just two hours between qualifying and the race, his Rahal Letterman Lanigan team was unable to repair the damage in time for the early evening race start.

Quotes
Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) Started 2nd, finished 1st; 47th career Indy car victory, ties A.J. Foyt’s record of at least one Indy car in each of 18 seasons: «The car rolled off the trailer really fast.  We’ve also been using the Honda simulator in Indy for the last three weeks, and that was a big help in our preparation.  It’s not often you get an amazing car like this.  It was a fun night for us and a great way to get started back [racing] after a long break.  The Honda engine, it was huge, man, the power out there.  Our car was just so fast tonight, in any situation.  We had to make a couple of bold moves tonight, and we could just go for it.  Huge thanks to the team and everyone involved.»

Zach Veach (Andretti Autosport Honda) Started 5th, finished 4th, matches his career-best finish: «We had a really, really good night here in the Gainbridge Honda. I wanted to start 2020 off well because 2019 was so rough — and we came out here to Texas and got a top four [finish]. I’m just very happy. This kind of momentum will be great to go into the Indy Grand Prix and hopefully have the season we’ve been needing to have. The guys did an awesome job. My engineer, Mark Bryant, gave me a car that was amazing and my crew – they were awesome. That played a big part in a race with not many on-track passes. I’m just happy and a big thank you to Andretti Autosport.»

Allen Miller (Race Team Principal, Honda Performance Development) on tonight’s 2020 season-opening win: «It’s great to finally be racing again.  INDYCAR did an excellent job in developing a way to return to the track, and our HPD race team excelled in adapting to these new procedures.  Scott Dixon proved once again why he is a five-time INDYCAR champion, and Felix Rosenqvist matched him move for move until his unfortunate crash.  Congratulations to Scott and the entire Ganassi team on a well-deserved win.»

LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Spanish-Harlem born singer/songwriter and producer, Lil Eddie, is excited to announce his new single, «Still», out now.

The digital release, available on all major streaming platforms, will also feature a touching and poignant music video that highlights the message that no matter how difficult a position the world finds itself in, love and positivity will prevail.

Lil Eddie says, «In such a historic and devastating time, I wanted to remind people that in a time of stillness we must remember what matters most. People! We all need each other and together we can overcome anything!»

«Still» is a powerful combination of stripped-down piano and the raw, emotional vocals of Lil Eddie. «I wanted to sing a story about the things in life that make you still. The beauty of love, and when all else fails, love prevails,» he says.

With 11 Grammy nominations and one Grammy win, Lil Eddie is no stranger to the music industry. His hit single «Statue» has amassed over 85 million streams worldwide.

Alongside working with some of music’s biggest stars including JLo, Jessie J, Keith Richards, P Diddy and Jason Derulo, Lil Eddie has also become Simon Cowell’s right-hand man and guest judge music expert on the UK’s «X-Factor: The Band», having previously helped form hit girl group Fifth Harmony and Latin boy band CNCO.

Lil Eddie says, «It’s an honor to be able to work with Simon and Syco music. I always learn so much from him and to be able to see contestants’ dreams come true is amazing. I feel so privileged in being a fingerprint on other stars’ careers.»

All of that guidance and support from Cowell will be put to good use as Lil Eddie plans to release a number of new tracks later this year. He said, «Ive got so much new music to come, I can’t wait for it to be released!»

‘Still’ is out now across all major streaming platforms.

Compassion & Choices Makes History: Collaborates With ‘Ventanillas de Salud’ During COVID-19 Crisis to Educate Immigrant Families About End-of-Life Care Options

LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Compassion & Choices today announced a historic collaboration with the Ventanillas de Salud (Windows of Health) network to launch a bilingual educational campaign during the COVID-19 crisis to inform U.S.-based Mexican immigrants about their full range of end-of-life care options.

Ventanillas de Salud is a national health outreach program implemented by the Mexican Consulate’s secretary of foreign affairs and the secretary of health of Mexico. The initiative serves over one million individuals and their families located in cities with a high concentration of immigrants, including Albuquerque, Austin, Boston, Boise, Brownsville (Texas), Chicago, Denver, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Sacramento, San Diego, Santa Ana, San Juan, Presidio (Texas), Seattle, among others. The goal is to reduce the disparities in end-of-life planning and healthcare that negatively impact the Mexican community living in the United States.

As part of the campaign, consular and Ventanilla de Salud officials this week launched a series of webinars to further inform their team that treats sensitive cases during the pandemic.

«We are very grateful to Ventanillas de Salud for helping us reach Mexican families living in the United States to ensure they are aware of the full range of end-of-life care options,» said Kim Callinan, president and CEO of Compassion & Choices. «The COVID-19 pandemic has created a far greater awareness of the importance of end-of-life care conversations that involve la familia

The historic collaboration is especially timely since a disproportionate number of Hispanics are dying from COVID-19 in the United States. In fact, 25% of coronavirus deaths are among Latinos, a group that makes up 18% of the U.S. population. The Latino community is less likely than whites to have health insurance, which reduces their ability and willingness to seek treatment.

The collaboration was launched Wednesday during a webinar titled: Healthcare in the COVID-19 Era. See webinar at https://youtu.be/S03Wv8KAbuw

«I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our allies at Compassion & Choices for their outstanding generosity in coordinating this activity which is so important for us,» said Ambassador Iván Sierra, executive director of Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior or Institute of Mexicans Abroad. «We have seen an enormous concern because our colleagues in the consulates, in recent months, have had to face loss of life within the community. Our team in Mexico City wants to put our grain of sand so that these tools reach you.»

«This first-time collaboration with Compassion & Choices will help us guide Mexicans living in the United States to make informed decisions about end-of-life care,» said Josana Tonda Salcedo, national coordinator for Ventanillas de Salud. «This pandemic makes it urgent for us to discuss with our loved ones what we want in case we get a deadly case of coronavirus or another life-shortening disease.»

More than 160 members of Ventanillas de Salud, Community Affairs and Protection representatives from the Mexican Consular network attended the 90-minute virtual training led by Compassion & Choices, where they learned about the free online bilingual COVID-19 toolkit available at CompassionAndChoices.org

Participants from all over the country, including Albuquerque, Boston, Boise, Brownsville (Tex.), Chicago, Denver, Detroit, El Paso, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New York, San Diego, Santa Ana, and Seattle, also discussed the End-of-Life Decisions Guide Toolkit available in English and Spanish. This simple resource includes the documents necessary to fill out an advance directive, which clearly details an individual’s care wishes for the end of life, so that family members are not left with the difficult task of guessing what a person wants when they cannot speak or make these decisions for themselves.  As part of the campaign, Mexican officials will conduct a series of webinars to «strengthen the capacities» of consular and Ventanillas de Salud teams that are treating sensitive cases during the pandemic.

The collaboration is possible thanks to the initiative of the Secretariat for North America of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations of Mexico, with the support of its General Directorates, the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, the Ministry of Health and the Mexican section of the Mexico-United States Border Health Commission.

«The historic collaboration with Ventanillas de Salud will help us reach Mexican immigrant communities with vulnerable populations,» said María Otero, national constituency manager for Compassion & Choices. «We are living very difficult times, and we must ensure that Mexican immigrant families are well informed about their care options at the end of life.»

Hispanics also are less likely than whites to complete advance directives or discuss with their loved ones under which circumstances, if any, they want to receive medical interventions to prolong their life or dying process. Hispanic seniors also have little knowledge about their end-of-life care options and are far less likely than whites to enroll in hospice, according to a report published by the American Hospice Association.

«But these disparities that impact Latinos are something we can control, by communicating with our doctors and loved ones ahead of time about whether we would want to be kept alive with aggressive treatments if we become too sick to speak for ourselves,» added Callinan. «An advance directive is something every person should complete. It can be a great source of relief for your family. It is — literally — a gift to your loved ones.»
