LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Local AP Biology teacher and acclaimed underwater photographer,
Renee Capozzola, has just been named the «Underwater Photographer of the Year 2021» by the Underwater Photographer of the Year (UPY) competition. Considered the world’s most prestigious international underwater photography contest, UPY bestows this yearly honor on a single image that their judges feel is «Best in Show.»

Sharks’ Skylight, Renee’s award-winning piece, was chosen as the winner from over 4,500 entries sent in from 68 countries. Her stunning image, shot in French Polynesia, features an underwater scene of noble and imposing blacktip reef sharks, contrasted with the calm sorbet hues of the above-water sunset.

«I am beyond proud to be the first female photographer to win this award and I’m hoping my photo will help build awareness of how endangered sharks are throughout the world,» remarks Renee. «It is estimated that 70-100 million sharks are killed every year, and without added legal protection, they may soon disappear completely, which would create complex issues in our marine ecosystem.»

Alex Mustard, UPY’s head judge and former marine biologist (who is regarded as one of the world’s leading underwater photographers), further commented on Renee’s piece: «This is a photograph of hope, a glimpse of how the ocean can be when we give it a chance. Renee not only persevered until this serendipitous scene unfolded, but more importantly, she has the talent to capture such a precise moment.»

To interview Renee Capozzola, contact EKC PR at 310-441-1000 or email – info@ekcpr.com.

About Renee Capozzola

A California native, Renee Capozzola has taught AP Biology at Palos Verdes High School for almost 20 years. She became a certified scuba diver in 2004 and was immediately fascinated by the beautiful reefs and marine animals she encountered. Quickly realizing that she wanted to share the underwater world with others, Renee grabbed a camera and began shooting.

Specializing in wide angle and split-level images, the award winner’s work (awarded in over 40 international accolades), showcases an intriguing combination of artistic talent honed through oil painting during her youth and a professional background in science.

Renee believes that her striking photographs can help increase awareness of our fragile marine ecosystems and encourage others to help protect our oceans.

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Innovative home appliances, consumer electronics, solar panels and HVAC technologies from LG Electronics are delivering high performance, unparalleled home connectivity, enhanced convenience, and energy efficiency to The New American Home® (TNAH) and The New American Remodel® (TNAR), the official show homes of the 2021 International Builders’ Show® virtual experience (IBSx).

International Recycling Group Chooses SB3 Industrial Park Site in City of Erie to Build Large Plastics Recycling Plant

ERIE, Pa., Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — International Recycling Group (IRG) today announced that it has entered into a contract with Erie Management Group to purchase land on the east side of Erie for its future plastics recycling plant—expected to be the world’s most technologically advanced.

The approximately 25-acre lot in the SB3 Industrial Park on East Lake Road sits in a federal Opportunity Zone within the city of Erie. Opportunity Zones were designated by Governor Tom Wolf as a means to attract investment in economically distressed neighborhoods that would benefit from job-creating development. The company says that the City of Erie provides access to a strong and skilled workforce, and the plant is expected to create at least 50 living-wage manufacturing jobs to start.

IRG says it was drawn to the site’s central location within Erie’s east side industrial corridor for a variety of reasons including its direct access via the Bayfront Parkway to interstates I-79 and I90. There is also a rail spur on the site, acreage previously home to the Hammermill and International Paper companies.

Mitch Hecht, Chairman of IRG, commented, «We’re envisioning a clean, environmentally advanced and environment-friendly building. It will be fully landscaped. The building will look like a typical light manufacturing plant or will perhaps resemble an e-commerce distribution center from the outside. There will be no outdoor scrapyard.»

An avid cyclist, Hecht said he also loves the fact that he’ll be able to leave the car behind and bike over to the site each day from his home on the west bay front.

IRG’s innovative process will ensure that the majority of recycled material from the new facility will be transported to recyclers and manufacturers to be reused for new products. Less than half of the material – material that cannot be reused for new products – will be transported to steel manufacturers to be used as an environmentally beneficial iron reducing agent; replacing mined coal which steel producers currently use. The process involves the reuse of already manufactured carbon molecules derived from the IRG processing which further reduces landfilling of unusable plastics recycling byproducts. It also dramatically reduces greenhouse gas emissions in steel production.

IRG will join other innovative environmental companies in the SB3 Industrial Park, including HERO BX, Calypso Enterprises, and Prism Glass Recycling, all founded, owned and operated by Erie businessman Samuel P. «Pat» Black, III, and his daughter Sumi James-Black. HERO BX is the largest producer of biodiesel in the northeast US, generating 50 million gallons annually at the Erie plant and over 250 million gallons across its five locations.

Calypso Enterprises holds one of the coveted twenty-five Pennsylvania medical marijuana grower/processor licenses and is currently completing a facility expansion, bringing its footprint to over 100,000 square feet.

Newly-launched Prism Glass Recycling provides an avenue for glass recycling at the municipal level after glass was phased out of single-source collection streams.

Relative to the transformational development on the City’s lower east-side, Pat Black shares in the excitement surrounding the IRG project. «Erie is my home and providing family-sustaining employment opportunities for our community has been my life’s work. I commend Mitch and his team for choosing Erie to launch what very well might be a model for the rest of the world.»

The Black family also sees the potential for a synergistic relationship between IRG and Prism Glass, according to Laura Guncheon, vice president, EMG Project Management Office. «As neighbors, literally, working together to keep recyclable materials out of the landfill and back into a useful life is a no-brainer.»

Erie Mayor, Joe Schember, commented on the decision by IRG: «My Team and I are very excited about this new development by IRG. Not only does it bring new, family-sustaining jobs to Erie, it will also keep all plastic out of area landfills by implementing new, innovative recycling methods. This brings incredible benefits to the Erie area. We look forward to working with Mitch Hecht and the IRG Erie team as they develop this exciting innovation.»

Hecht also commented on IRG’s efforts at cooperation and open dialogue with the City on quality-of-life issues. «We’re fully committed to ensuring the quality of life around our facility. We’re a team of passionate environmentalists. The entirety of the company’s operation takes place indoors. Bales of tightly packed, pre-sorted plastics come into bays from fully-enclosed tractor-trailers. They leave the building the same way. Material is never exposed to the elements. Total traffic flow will be about 50 trucks per day.»

IRG expects to begin construction on the new plant later this year, with completion scheduled for early 2023.

About International Recycling Group:
IRG is designing and building the world’s most technologically advanced plastics recycling plant in northwest Pennsylvania with commissioning expected in 2023. The SuperPRF™ concept will accept all types and grades of waste plastic and in all forms. Recyclable resins will be sorted, cleaned, and sold to downstream recycling processors. Non-recyclable material will be repurposed as an iron reducing agent for the integrated steel industry.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — This spring, over 30,000 volunteer Field Advocates from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will join together in advocating for effective suicide prevention legislation. Beginning now through May, AFSP Advocates will participate in State Capitol Day events happening across the United States during which they will share their personal connection to suicide and talk to state public officials about legislation that can help reduce state and national suicide rates. Interested individuals are encouraged to connect with their local AFSP Chapter for event dates and registration information, afsp.org/chapter.

«At State Capitol Day events, AFSP’s volunteer advocates bravely share their connection to our cause and ask their lawmakers to advance legislation that will address this leading cause of death,» said Robert Gebbia, AFSP CEO. «By participating in this advocacy program, our volunteers are helping those who write state laws better understand that suicide affects people throughout their state and that more needs to be done to prevent loss of life from suicide. Even though these events are being held virtually this year, they are just as vital to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide.»

As the host organization for these events, AFSP has a list of specific public policy priorities that every state should focus on to reduce the suicide rate. These priorities include efforts such as:

  • Training for educators about suicide warning signs,
  • State funding streams for the implementation of the new 9-8-8 dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and
  • Increasing the number of health professionals who receive regular trauma – and evidence-informed education and training in suicide assessment, treatment, and management.

To date, there have been 37 events scheduled this year, with many more expected to be scheduled. AFSP’s volunteer Field Advocates in attendance at State Capitol Day events, include suicide loss survivors, those with lived experience of suicide and those who support them, mental health clinicians, and people who are passionate about the cause. Some events will include guest speakers such as the Governor, Lt. Governor and/or state legislators. In the week following each event, advocates will have a phone or video appointment with state legislators to share their story and what legislation can make an impact in their respective state. In 2020, 27 state bills that were supported as part of a State Capitol Day event became law.

The planning for these events began in November of last year. To follow along with the advocates as they make strides in this work, follow #AFSPadvocacy. To join this movement and receive updates about events in your area visit: afsp.org/advocate.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health through education and community programs, develops suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provides support for those affected by suicide. Led by CEO Robert Gebbia and headquartered in New York, and with a public policy office in Washington, D.C., AFSP has local chapters in all 50 states with programs and events nationwide. Almond Board Provides Seed Grants to Support Pollinator Health and Biodiversity

MODESTO, Calif., Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Honey bees and native pollinators will find more forage in California’s almond orchards this spring as a result of the almond community’s five-point

MODESTO, Calif., Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Honey bees and native pollinators will find more forage in California’s almond orchards this spring as a result of the almond community’s five-point Pollinator Protection Plan. Announced one year ago by the Almond Board of California (ABC), this plan expands the industry’s long-standing commitment to researching, protecting and improving bee health.

One of the five tenets of the Pollinator Protection Plan – increasing floral diversity on farm – led the Almond Board to create and fund the Bee+ Scholarship program which provides grants to farmers to help offset the cost of planting forage and habitat in and around their orchards. This effort led to 135 new almond farmers joining Project Apis m.’s Seeds for Bees program and added pollinator habitat to 14,778 acres of almond orchards, a 22% increase to the footprint of almond pollinator habitat in the last year.

Another component of the Bee+ Scholarship encouraged farmer participation in Pollinator Partnership’s Bee Friendly Farming program. To date, 54,202 acres of almonds have been Bee Friendly certified, meaning farmers are actively protecting pollinator populations by implementing positive, incremental changes on-farm.

«As a partnership designed by nature, almonds take our responsibility for honey bee health seriously,» said Josette Lewis, PhD, chief scientific officer for the Almond Board. «Through these efforts, we diversify and expand the nutritious forage that honey bees find in almond orchards each year while extending our efforts outside the orchard to benefit native pollinators too.»

Ben King, a fourth-generation almond farmer based in Colusa, Calif., has planted cover crops on his farm for more than five years. «It comes out of a love for bees,» King said, «and recognizing the importance of taking what nature gives you and acting as a steward.»

As almonds are the first commercial crop in North America to bloom, King notes that «almond orchards are the first stop for the honey bees, and the trees’ pollen is their first major source of nutrition. As a result, hives regularly leave stronger as they move on to pollinate other crops across the country, an effect amplified with the addition of more floral biodiversity via cover crops.»

By investing in blooming cover crops, King has not only seen a benefit to pollinators, but also to the overall health of his orchard, especially as it relates to soil. «Soil is the foundation of farming and by planting pollinator habitat you are creating a healthy ecosystem,» notes King. Cover crops also provide positive impacts on carbon sequestration and can improve the amount of moisture that can be stored in the soil.

«It’s clear this is the path forward,» King said. «But there is a long-term investment associated with making these changes. Luckily, the Almond Board is progressive and supports these initiatives on farmers’ behalf.»

In 2020, ABC invested more than $750,000 in activities that directly benefit pollinator health. This included $300,000 in incentives and technical assistance to expand pollinator forage and habitat on-farm. ABC will continue to invest in providing tools and options to farmers to continue expanding pollinator habitat in 2021.

Bolstering these efforts, ABC and the University of California, Davis have partnered to publish a cover crop management guide for almond farmers. The culmination of years of research on the management and benefits of cover crops for both pollinators and soil health, this practical guide will be released this summer and drive adoption of a practice which promotes biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

This work builds upon a longstanding commitment to pollinator health. Since 1995, the California almond community has supported 126 research projects – more than any other crop group – to address the five major factors impacting honey bee health, including varroa mites, pest and disease management, lack of genetic diversity, pesticide exposure, and access to forage and nutrition.
