TAMPA, Fla. , Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The University of South Florida today announced the launch of an interdisciplinary center dedicated to serving Tampa Bay as the major training and knowledge hub for issues related to social and criminal justice. The Center for Justice Research & Policy unites scholars and practitioners from colleges across USF’s three campuses, area law enforcement agencies and community advocates. Together, they provide learning opportunities for students, collaborative community-engaged research and actionable, evidence-based solutions to address some of the justice system’s greatest challenges.

The center is funded in part by a five-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institute of Justice awarded to co-directors Edelyn Verona, professor of psychology, and Bryanna Fox, associate professor of criminology. The grant is consistent with the center’s mission to apply rigorous research to advance evidence-based criminal justice practices.

«The causes and responses to crime are multi-systemic, but rarely do we see truly collaborative efforts on these fronts,» Fox said. «It’s been a long-time goal to establish an interdisciplinary hub focused on conducting research and innovating real-world strategies to help reduce crime and incarceration, promote safe communities and improve outcomes for people in the justice system. This center is one of the first to do just that.»

«It’s beyond time that we lay the groundwork for moving beyond academic silos and science-public communication gaps to allow for innovative ideas that produce practical results,» Verona said. «As recent events around the country show, we need multilevel solutions that address the various biases and improve the effectiveness of the system to ensure public safety.»

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Rays/Tampa Bay Rowdies organizations have each provided a $25,000 gift to the USF Foundation to support projects involving the evaluation and implementation of police reform. The teams have publicly expressed concerns over social injustices in the Black community.

«The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are proud to support the new USF Center for Justice Research & Policy,» said Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, Tampa Bay Buccaneers co-owner. «Our players and staff are steadfast in their commitment to creating programs and enhancing initiatives that reverse the course of systemic injustice. It takes all of us to foster an equitable society, and we will continue to work hand in hand with our community partners to implement purposeful change throughout Tampa Bay

«We are delighted at the opportunity to partner – along with our friends at the Rays and Bucs – with USF to make training and learning opportunities available for the Tampa Bay community,» said Steve Griggs, CEO of the Tampa Bay Lightning. «Ensuring that courageous conversations like these are ongoing is incredibly important for continuing to advance our community. The Lightning remains committed to ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table and this new USF social and criminal justice center will do just that.»

«The USF Center for Justice Research & Policy is doing important work in the study of criminal and social justice policy to move us closer to equity,» said Tampa Bay Rays President & Tampa Bay Rowdies Vice Chairman Brian Auld. «We are proud to support their work.»

Several projects are underway at the center. Fox and Verona have been working with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office to study and evaluate reentry services for jail inmates. Fox is also providing oversight of new policies and procedures enacted by the Tampa Police Department to improve its relationship with communities of color. The formal partnership follows her review of feedback provided by the Mayor’s Community Task Force on Policing.

«USF has been an incredible partner in our mission to embrace progressive policies here in Tampa. This new research center will allow USF to continue the important work of understanding the barriers to equity and how we can break them down together. They have already made significant contributions to nationwide conversations on social justice and this center will be another opportunity to further those conversations that are key to progress,» Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said.  «We are proud to be home to this top research university that continues to lead the way and make a positive, long-lasting impact.»

The center’s leadership team has vast expertise in crime prevention, substance abuse, juvenile justice, gun violence, human trafficking, forensic anthropology and the court system. In addition to research, they’ll offer training events to community partners on topics such as, evidence-based policing, criminal justice reform, crisis intervention and reentry services, risk assessment and more.

Undergraduate and graduate USF students with varying majors will have the opportunity to collaborate through the center and participate in translational, community-engaged research, and help identify practical applications for their findings. This experience will serve as a model for their future work as scholars and practitioners.

In addition to launching the center, USF has taken a series of actions in recent months to work toward dismantling systemic racism and actively promote racial equity across its campuses and in surrounding communities.

Bird Fatalities In Wind Farms Greatly Reduced By Using IdentiFlight AI Technology

LOUISVILLE, Colo., Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — IdentiFlight® is excited to announce that an independent study, «Automated curtailment of wind turbines reduces eagle fatalities,» was recently published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.  Conducted by The Peregrine Fund, in cooperation with Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. and the US Geological Survey, at a wind farm site in Wyoming, the research showed use of the IdentiFlight system resulted in an 82 percent reduction of eagle fatalities

Bird fatalities in wind farms greatly reduced by using IdentiFlight artificial intelligence technology

«Avian collisions with turbine blades have been a long-time concern in the wind industry.  The IdentiFlight avian detection technology was developed to address this problem and promote the successful coexistence of avian wildlife and wind energy,» said Ben Quinn, Senior Vice President at IdentiFlight. «We now have conclusive evidence that IdentiFlight can be utilized as a mitigation and minimization solution for current and future wind projects.»

Dr. Chris McClure, Director of Global Conservation Science at The Peregrine Fund and lead author on this study, noted, «These results show that using the IdentiFlight system can lessen numbers of fatalities of eagles at wind energy facilities, reducing the conflict between wind energy and raptor conservation. As this technology continues to develop and improve, it has the potential to greatly impact raptor conservation around the globe.»

Continually Evolving Technology

The IdentiFlight system is commercially deployed at projects around the world and has actively tracked and documented over 2.2 million eagle tracks. Documented images increase by more than 10 million every year with over 47 million images of protected species gathered. With every image, the IdentiFlight system becomes more accurate and robust.

Carlos Jorquera, Chief Technology Officer for IdentiFlight, stated, «One of the advantages of the IdentiFlight system is its ability to learn from the massive amounts of data that it collects daily from eagles and other protected bird species around the world. By leveraging artificial intelligence technologies, such as machine-learning and convolutional neural networks, the system continuously improves as the data set grows.»

Quinn added, «In fact, IdentiFlight has achieved dramatic improvements in the time since this study was completed with expanded capabilities and new avian species added to better serve global needs, including Red and Black Kites, Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Wedge-tailed Eagles, White-tailed Eagles, Lesser Spotted Eagles and Condors.  We are excited about the future of IdentiFlight and look forward to continuing to demonstrate that wildlife and wind generation can coexist.»

How IdentiFlight Works

The IdentiFlight system blends artificial intelligence with high-precision optical technology to detect eagles and other protected avian species.    Proprietary software and neural network technologies process the images to determine 3D position, velocity, trajectory, and protected species of interest, all within seconds of detection. IdentiFlight towers operate as an autonomous system detecting, classifying, and curtailing specific turbines that could pose a risk to the bird.  The system detects a bird as far as one kilometer away, classifying it as a protected species such as an eagle (or not) in real time. The IdentiFlight towers can be positioned to cover multiple turbines in a single wind farm.  When installed as a network with overlapping aerial coverage, the systems work together to provide the most protection possible for avian activity in the area.

About IdentiFlight

IdentiFlight markets, delivers, and operates machine vision and AI technology for avian species detection and is a product of Boulder Imaging. In an operating windfarm, IdentiFlight contributes to bird conservation by helping protect eagles from collisions with rotating wind turbine blades. The system provides informed curtailment to specific turbines to reduce energy loss.   In wind project development, IdentiFlight helps in permitting sites by accurately quantifying bird activity at prospective sites. The IdentiFlight system has completed real-world testing and validation and is now being deployed at projects across the U.S. and globally.  To learn more about IdentiFlight, please visit www.IdentiFlight.com.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — DEWAR’S® Scotch Whisky, the world’s most awarded blended Scotch whisky, announces the launch of DEWAR’S Portuguese Smooth, showcasing the exciting flavors that are crafted when Scotland meets Portugal in a bottle. Marking the brand’s 175th anniversary this year, this new iteration of the DEWAR’S Cask Series features DEWAR’S 8 year old double-aged blended Scotch whisky, finished in ruby port casks for a rich, full-bodied blend.

Following the successful launches of DEWAR’S Caribbean Smooth Rum Cask Finish and DEWAR’S Ilegal Smooth Mezcal Cask Finish, the third edition in the brand’s double-aged blended Scotch cask-finished series reflects the brand’s passion for harmoniously bringing together unexpected flavor traits for a richer taste and experience. Perfect for both whisky aficionados and amateurs alike, DEWAR’S Portuguese Smooth features flavor notes of freshly sliced ripe apricots, honeydew melon, red cherries and black currants drizzled with heather honey – all enveloped in rich creamy notes of vanilla.

«The whisky category has a certain mythology of its own, replete with traditional conventions. We created the DEWAR’S cask-finished series to break the mold and evolve those traditions by bringing two product elaboration cultures together – in this case from Scotland and Portugal – to create something richer. Though we can’t travel to the Highlands of Scotland or the Douro Valley of Portugal this year, we crafted DEWAR’S Portuguese Smooth to engage all those with wanderlust and curiosity. The brand has long been driven by a natural curiosity and, with 2021 ringing in our 175th anniversary, we hope that DEWAR’S Portuguese Smooth will inspire people to look beyond the obvious, or their ‘usual tipple’, and to discover a new whisky that will enthrall the senses and delight the palate. It is about enjoyment, not rules, and through this we are certain that this great whisky will challenge some pre-conceived notions of what standard blended scotch whisky is about,» says Brian Cox, Vice President, DEWAR’S Scotch Whisky, North America.

«With its full bodied yet refined mouthfeel and unique flavor profile – which features subtle notes of stone fruits, dark red fruits and honey – DEWAR’S Portuguese Smooth is designed to be a veritable celebration of the two cultures of Scotland and Portugal. Thanks to a unique production process where the 8 year old scotch is double aged for extra smoothness and then finished in casks that previously held fine ruby port wines, DEWAR’S Portuguese Smooth has a satisfyingly unusual, yet super smooth, taste that is ideally enjoyed anyway you like – be it neat, on the rocks, in a highball or as a great alternative to beer and wine for food pairings. It’s really about your mood, time, place and company – be it in person or remotely,» says Stephanie Macleod, Master Blender for DEWAR’S.

Signature cocktails include The Spiced Tonic Highball and The Ginger Highball which reimagines the classic highball with a refreshing blend of stone fruit and baking spice flavors.

DEWAR’S Portuguese Smooth 8 year old port cask finish will be available in a 750ML bottle with an SRP of $21.99 and will retail in all fine wine & spirits retailers nationwide. IMA Publishes New Report on the Pandemic’s Impact on Businesses and the Finance Function

MONTVALE, N.J., Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — A report by IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) released today outlines how the pandemic is affecting finance functions and challenging organizations worldwide. «The Impact of COVID-19 on the Finance Function» report, which surveyed 1,481 accounting and financial professionals in five countries – China, India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the U.S. – provides a snapshot into three main areas of focus:

  • The impact of the pandemic on organizations, staffing, and compensation
  • The way the pandemic changed the skills needed in finance and the ability for workers to upskill accordingly
  • The changing priorities of the finance function around the world

The survey found that the pandemic has predictably lessened compensation and employment. Most of the survey respondents have had a reduction in their compensation this year, whether in salary, bonus, or both. Further, approximately half of the companies surveyed have let a portion of their staff go. The hardest hit companies were those in the tourism, travel, and hospitality industry, and those with more than $10 billion in revenue.

There was significant concern among survey respondents as to whether their current skills will be relevant in the post-COVID-19 era. As a result, there has been an uptick in professionals working to gain new skills: 75% of the accounting and finance professionals surveyed are enhancing their job skills, including cost management, decision support, and performance management.

«The COVID-19 pandemic continues to present businesses with unprecedented challenges and poses new demands on the finance function,» said Raef Lawson, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, IMA vice president of research and policy. «Finance professionals are interested in upskilling now more than ever to support their companies during the pandemic and in the post-COVID-19 era.»

The report shows that the majority of the professionals surveyed are emphasizing business essentials, prioritizing risk management and cash forecasting, and working on improving their job skills. The field of finance is transforming faster than ever, and finance and accounting professionals must work to strengthen their skills to maintain and advance their careers during these challenging times.

«The Impact of COVID-19 on the Finance Function» report is available here.

SERHANT. Releases Year-End Report Detailing New York City’s 2020 High-End Real Estate Market

NEW YORK, Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — SERHANT., a multidimensional real estate brokerage that sits at the intersection of media, entertainment, education and technology, today announced the release of its Year-End 2020 Signature Report, a semi-annual report detailing sales activity $10 million and above in the Manhattan and Brooklyn real estate market.

Key findings from the SERHANT. Signature Report include:

  • Record prices: The luxury real estate market saw a median sales price of $16,050,000 and an average sales price of $22,658,414, both record highs. The condo market also set a new record for price-per-square-foot at $5,137.
  • Record number of sales over $50 million: The ultra-prime market, defined as properties priced $50 million and above, had a banner year in 2020, boasting the most condo transactions ever in a single year as well as the highest-ever percentage of deals in this price range.
  • Decrease in overall number of transactions: There were 106 transactions in 2020 priced at $10 million and above, a decrease from the previous year, due in-part to mandated stay-at-home orders early in the year that prevented in-person showings.

«The luxury sector outperformed the broader market in 2020, driven by legacy transactions and some COVID-concessions in the marketplace,» said Garrett Derderian, director of market intelligence at SERHANT. «In any market slowdown, there are opportunistic buyers, and today’s luxury buyer is extremely savvy and uses incredible amounts of data to make well-informed property-buying decisions.»

The SERHANT. Signature Report shares a name with SERHANT. Signature, the firm’s dedicated sales and marketing services for properties priced $10 million and above.  Across the SERHANT. brokerage, which was founded in September 2020, the Signature division has been the most active in the firm.

«Even in a year as unpredictable as 2020, we continued to witness strong velocity in the luxury market,» said Ryan Serhant, founder and CEO of SERHANT.  «Buyers from around the globe saw opportunity in New York real estate, proving that the world still believes in this amazing city.  The three P’s will always sell: well-priced, good product, right place.»

STERLING, Va., Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The hydrogen fueling station market is witnessing a dramatic acceleration in growth, with 584 hydrogen stations deployed by year-end 2020, according to a study released by Information Trends, a market research company.

The study, «Global Market for Hydrogen Fueling Stations, 2021» says the number of countries that have deployed hydrogen stations now stands at 33, with more countries gearing up to enter the market.

The deployments are a positive sign for the uptake of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles from Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda, said Naqi Jaffery, the President and CEO of Information Trends.

As hydrogen fuel cell buses and trucks gain greater market acceptance, hydrogen stations for heavy-duty transportation are increasingly being deployed, Mr. Jaffery said. In the next few years, he added, hydrogen fuel cells will be widely used to drive trains, aircraft, and maritime vessels.

Japan is a clear global leader in deployments with close to 150 hydrogen stations, Mr. Jaffery said, but the fastest growth is in China where more than a hundred hydrogen stations have gone into operation.

By 2035, the study said, hydrogen stations will blanket most of the United States, Western Europe, China, Japan, and South Korea. The sums of money being poured into hydrogen station deployments are staggering, mostly raised through public-private partnerships.

The 200+ page study is based on extensive research spanning several months. It provides a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen station deployments.

In addition to the study, Information Trends has put together a comprehensive database of hydrogen stations globally.

NEW YORK, Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — One of the most common myths about BDSM is that people who engage in it are authoritarian, abusive, sexist, aggressive and even psychologically maladjusted. However, a recent survey finds that taking on a dominant/sadistic role in BDSM doesn’t mean you will be the same in real life, especially when it comes to politics.

The survey conducted by KinkD–a kinky dating app, received responses from 4,890 US users, who answered 3 questions regarding the individual’s attitudes towards the 2020 presidential election. Results showed that 71.1% of the respondents disapproved of the way Donald Trump handled his job as president, while 77.2% of the respondents accepted Biden’s victory in the presidential election as legitimate. It is also noted that 91% of the respondents disapproving of Trump reported themselves as Dom/Sadist in BDSM play.

Since 2016, Donald Trump and his backers have been criticized by the media for their extreme aggression and authoritarianism. Some psychologists even think that Donald Trump has exhibited traits across his whole life that you would not expect of a U.S. president. «If there is a correlation between BDSM and a political stance, some people will say BDSM practitioners are more likely to stand with Donald Trump. This is a total misconception about BDSM, and the result of this survey just provides solid evidence to debunk it.» Said John Martinuk, co-founder of KinkD.

According to the survey, 27% of the respondents approved of the way. Trump handled his job as president, while the rest held the opposite opinion. The following are screenshots of some representative answers, which may shed light on the political perception of the BDSM community.

Approvals of Trump:

Reasons:

He’s the first president since Carter that hasn’t involved us in a new military conflict. He may be an arrogant bastard but he’s not the blood soaked monster that every other president in the last 40 years has been. He may be an asshole but at least he’s honest about it and didn’t hide his violence and eat crimes behind a smooth talking smile.

Reasons:

He hammered the China trade deal and had us not get screwed with trade. I like how he tried his best to keep jobs here and capital gains taxes low for stock trading. Now don’t think of me as one of those Trump rioters. I am disappointed with the president as of late. I wish it worked out better. He gave me hope in 2015. He sounded pretty liberal on social issues which he was for the majority of his life. I’m a social liberal but am a fan of Capitalism and free enterprise. I wish him the best and hope he and his family are left alone.

Disapprovals of Trump:

Reasons:

If after 4 years in office and the looting of millions of taxpayer money into his own businesses, the hundreds of guilty pleas from his friends and coworkers, the racist and sexist comments, and executions of the poor and mentally ill a person still approves the man who smears $7 a .15mL tube of bronzer on his face than we have someone who is a cult follower.

Reasons:

Fascism, destroying the working class and eliminating the middle class, using racism to allow the exploitation of workers all around the globe, transphobia, homophobia, the list goes on and on.

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The CVS Health Foundation today announced it has established a five-year, $5 million CVS Health Foundation Health Care Careers Scholarship program, in collaboration with UNCF (United Negro College Fund). Scholarships will be awarded to Black and Latinx students pursuing an academic career in health care. The new scholarship program is part of CVS Health’s nearly $600 million commitment over the next five years to address inequity faced by Black people and other disenfranchised communities.

«This scholarship will feed a robust pipeline of under-represented students, which will in turn strengthen the pool of talented college graduates ready for today’s and tomorrow’s workplace,» said David Casey, Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, CVS Health. «Enabling students to excel in the workforce—particularly people of color and those facing financial barriers—advances our commitment to social justice and equity and will have a lasting impact.»

The CVS Health Foundation Health Care Careers Scholarship is being launched in collaboration with UNCF, the nation’s largest minority education organization supporting students’ education and development through scholarships and advocacy for minority education and college readiness. According to a report by UNCF’s Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute, students who receive a UNCF scholarship outperform the national population of students in persistence through college and to graduation. In fact, 70% of African American freshmen who received a UNCF general scholarship graduated within six years, compared to only 38% of all African American students nationwide.

«This is an incredibly generous gift from the CVS Health Foundation,» said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF’s president and CEO. «We know that African American, Latinx and other minority communities have been disproportionately impacted by the current pandemic. It’s particularly important right now to welcome as many students of color as we can into the health care field. The ripple effect of COVID-19 has the potential to discourage students from pursuing a college education and may prevent others from continuing their education. Recognizing these facts, the CVS Health Foundation is providing a pathway for successful applicants to continue on their journey to attain a college degree and become our next generation of pandemic frontliners.»

Black and Latinx students attending an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with an interest in pursuing a career in the health care sector are eligible to apply for the need-based awards.  Eligible areas of study will bolster the health care innovation talent pipeline, with majors including pharmacy, nursing, business management, biology, biochemistry, finance, operations/supply chain, data analytics, information technology, actuary and human resources. The two-year scholarships will support students in their junior and senior years as they complete their studies.

«Working with UNCF, the CVS Health Foundation is supporting a best-in-class model for moving students to and through college,» said Eileen Howard Boone, Senior Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropy, CVS Health and President of the CVS Health Foundation.  «UNCF has an impressive track record of impacting minority education and improving graduation rates for students, while making a meaningful difference in the lives of selected scholars.»

UNCF will accept applications for the CVS Health Foundation Health Care Career Scholarship from February 1 through April 1, 2021. For more information and to apply visit: https://uncf.org/scholarships
