ROSH HA’AYIN, Israel, Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Aquarius Engines (TASE: AQUA) have signed a partnership deal with Honda-affiliate Musashi Seimitsu to co-develop electricity generators for the automotive and telecommunications industry. The move comes a year after the Japanese auto-parts manufacturer invested capital into the company.

Aquarius Engines now plans to establish a subsidiary in Japan to further broaden its global reach, collaborate on R&D and seek new strategic partners. The Israeli firm is looking to Tokyo to boost existing relationships and foster new ones – with an eye to adapting their patented linear free-piston engine to operate on Hydrogen. In recent years the Japanese government has invested in an ambitious policy to encourage research and development into the use of hydrogen as an energy source.

«We are proud to be deepening our partnership with Musashi Seimitsu and establishing strong roots within the Japanese automotive industry. Japan’s global reputation as a leader in the automotive industry makes it fertile ground for Aquarius Engines to evolve and grow. We continue to advance and optimize our technology and register additional patents. While seeking new opportunities across the telecommunications, transportation, aviation and automotive industries,» said Gal Fridman, Chairman of Aquarius Engines.

The 10kg Aquarius Engine can be used as an onboard power generator in a vehicle or as a stand-alone electricity generator. While the market is expected to witness promising growth opportunities in the long run, the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to negatively impact the market. Strict restrictions on transportation activities and lockdowns in the first half of 2020 paralyzed electric kick scooter retail business activities across the globe. While manufacturing and supply chain activities were severely disrupted, the situation was particularly challenging for the manufacturers and dealers of electric kick scooters. In the near future, however, the fear of public transportation could motivate consumers to seek alternate modes of transportation, thereby driving the market. The pandemic is expected to be an accelerator for the transition to sustainable mobility.

The need for product differentiation and the introduction of next-generation technology is anticipated to favor market growth. One of the key factors expected to boost demand for the two-wheeler is the shrinking parking spaces in metro cities. In recent times, these two-wheelers have gained prominence in countries such as the U.S., Germany, France, and Spain. The growing need to avoid traffic congestions and increased demand for micro-mobility options have encouraged vendors to manufacture folding electric scooters. These two-wheelers offer flexibility with minimum energy consumption and can be easily folded to the size of a suitcase.

An increase in greenhouse gas emissions has resulted in initiatives to combat climate change with hopes pinned on e-mobility. Several countries globally have started enacting climate change action plans to reduce vehicular emissions by adopting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options. Furthermore, investments in clean energy and initiatives that are taken by governments to curb CO2 emissions are expected to boost the demand for electric scooters over the coming years.

North America is expected to be the fastest-growing regional market over the next few years. The U.S. is anticipated to emerge as an early adopter of e-scooters due to high technology penetration and developed e-charging infrastructure.

Maxeon Solar Technologies Earns Prestigious LEED Gold Certification

SINGAPORE, Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Maxeon Solar Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ:MAXN), a global leader in solar innovation, announced today that its Maxeon solar cell fabrication facility in Laguna, Philippines, has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C) Gold certification for its environmental performance and sustainable operations, making it the fifth building to meet sustainable LEED standards…

SINGAPORE, Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Maxeon Solar Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ:MAXN), a global leader in solar innovation, announced today that its Maxeon solar cell fabrication facility in Laguna, Philippines, has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C) Gold certification for its environmental performance and sustainable operations, making it the fifth building to meet sustainable LEED standards for the company.

LEED is a green building certification program developed by the non-profit U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and used worldwide. It is a transparent process that includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green constructions aiming to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. In particular, LEED for Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C) provides a framework for planning and building a holistic green edifice, giving the opportunity to implement every sustainability feature and maximizing the benefits.

«We are honored to receive this designation which is an international symbol of excellence and recognizes our efforts towards sustainability, a green environment and the preservation of human health,» said Lindsey Wiedmann, Chief Legal Officer and Global Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) Executive Leader at Maxeon Solar Technologies. «We hold ourselves and our products to a higher standard, and believe in delivering solar technologies as clean as the energy they produce. We have five LEED-certified buildings, including three LEED Gold manufacturing sites and two LEED Platinum administrative buildings. We’re proud to tell our customers that every Maxeon IBC solar cell we make will now come from a LEED Gold-certified facility.»

The Philippines manufacturing site received LEED BD+C Gold certification for implementing, during the planning and construction phase of the new edifice, a number of measurable strategies and solutions that aimed at achieving high performance in the certification’s six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials and resources, energy and atmosphere, innovation and design.

Some of the features that helped the plant earn its attestation include:

  • Sustainable site – During the site development phase, the impact of construction on the environment was minimal, with about 20% vegetated open space maintained. The site is also designed with bicycle racks, showers, and changing facilities for employees. A solar carport, roof with high reflectance index and open grid pavement contributed to a more sustainable environment.
  • Water Efficiency – A 50.45% reduction in water use for all plumbing fixtures over conventional use was demonstrated. The presence of native plants and turfing eliminates permanent irrigation system.
  • Energy & Atmosphere – In parallel to the building’s efficient energy systems such as lighting and cooling, a wafer fab facility requires a great amount of electricity for production use. Most equipment that discharges a great amount of heat were designed to recover waste heat for process water heating.  The completed energy model demonstrated a 16.7% improvement over  the ASHRAE standard.
  • Materials and resources – The site’s construction waste management plan ensured that 93% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill. The building’s envelope retains 96% of the previous building’s structure.
  • Indoor Air Quality – Best practices were implemented to prevent indoor air pollution during construction, and employee surveys are regularly conducted to continue to ensure staff comfort and health.
  • Innovation – The plan for ongoing operation includes the implementation of green cleaning and green purchasing policies, solid waste management and further reductions in water and energy use. Furthermore, a 225kWp solar panel grid-tie system was recently energized on the manufacturing rooftop.

«In all new developments, Maxeon will continue to hold itself to a high standard to protect the environment and be a leader in sustainability,» added Jeff Waters, CEO at Maxeon Solar Technologies. «Each employee embraces it as their goal to preserve and regenerate our environment, and to contribute to Maxeon’s global environmental stewardship.»

DUBLIN, Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Global wind and solar company, Mainstream Renewable Power, has signed an agreement with the renewable energy investment company Aker Horizons (a wholly owned subsidiary of Aker ASA) which will take a 75% equity stake in the company, subject to regulatory approval. The deal values Mainstream at EUR1 billion (including a potential earn-out of up to EUR 100 million in 2023 and subject to customary adjustments) which represents a significant return for shareholders of up to 5.5 times investment. The agreement paves the way for a rapid acceleration of Mainstream’s global expansion plans to bring 5.5 Gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar assets to financial close by 2023.

The company, founded by Dr Eddie O’Connor in 2008, has significant interests across Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Africa, as well as in the global offshore wind sector, with over 1.2 GW of major capital projects currently under construction. Mainstream has a major market presence in Chile, Africa, and Vietnam, as well as assets in development in other countries including the Philippines, Australia, and Colombia. The company will remain focused on delivering its ~10 GW global development pipeline and growing its portfolio in existing as well as new markets, with the full backing of the Aker ASA group.

Under the terms of the agreement, the company will continue to operate as Mainstream, led by its CEO Mary Quaney and supported by its established and experienced leadership team.  Eddie O’Connor will remain as Chairman, retaining a significant minority interest in the business and all existing shareholders will have the opportunity to reinvest alongside him ahead of a planned IPO of Mainstream within the next two to three years.

Commenting on the deal, Mainstream’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mary Quaney said:

«We are delighted to have such a highly respected business as Aker Horizons on board, enabling Mainstream to materially accelerate its growth plans to deliver a global portfolio of wind and solar assets. Together with such an exceptional partner we will strengthen our position as a leader in the global energy transition during this critical decade.»

Kristian Røkke, Chief Executive Officer of Aker Horizons, said:

«We are thrilled to partner with Mainstream as we accelerate our journey of what we call planet-positive investing. Mainstream’s role as a pioneer in renewables and its strong entrepreneurial culture is a good fit as we carve out our path forward in the energy transition. Through the acquisition of Mainstream, Aker Horizons will gain a platform to drive forward its plans in renewable energy and position itself in a growing market for hybrid projects.»

Rothschild & Co acted as financial adviser to Mainstream on the Transaction and Linklaters, Byrne Wallace and Philip Lee acted as legal advisors on the Transaction.

BERLIN, Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The European Commission today unveiled the Mission Innovation Hydrogen Valley platform, which highlights 32 large-scale hydrogen flagship projects around the world. The platform will present these advanced projects as «Hydrogen Valleys», with the intention of promoting collaboration between hydrogen project developers and awareness for policy makers.

Among the «most advanced H2 projects in the world» is one developed by one of Europe’s fastest growing green hydrogen companies – Enapter’s Phi Suea House in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The multi-house residence in 2015 became the world’s first self-sustaining development fully powered by a clean energy system based on hydrogen energy storage, making it one of the fully-operational Hydrogen Valleys presented on the platform alongside Hydrogen Valleys in development.

The Mission Innovation initiative started at the COP21 in Paris in 2015 to reinvigorate and accelerate global clean energy innovation. Today’s platform launch kicks off one of eight Innovation Challenges, led by the Renewable and Clean Hydrogen co-leads, Australia, Germany and the EU.

«Realising the huge potential of green hydrogen in the clean energy transition requires accelerated efforts across all sectors of society.  The many flagship projects featured on the Mission Innovation Hydrogen Valley platform can help build bridges between cutting-edge technologies and deployment of green hydrogen systems at scale.»
 – Patrick Child (Deputy Director General for Research & Innovation, MI Steering Committee Chair)

The Phi Suea House, the only Hydrogen Valley featured from South-East Asia, is a multi-building development powered solely by solar power, a hybrid hydrogen-battery storage system and hydrogen fuel cells. The project was developed by Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, the German co-founder of electrolyser producer Enapter, to showcase combined solar and hydrogen tech feasibility – and uses Enapter’s own electrolyser systems to create green hydrogen from water and electricity.

Enapter is the world’s only manufacturer of Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolysers, and its highly-efficient, modular hydrogen generators are used in more than 30 countries. It has chosen Saerbeck, Germany for its first mass-production facility, with construction planned to begin early this year and finish in 2022, with annual production capacity of more than 100,000 electrolyser modules.

«Phi Suea House was an excellent testing ground for developing such a world-first hydrogen system, one which gave Enapter an early chance to prove the success of our AEM electrolysers. That’s why we’re excited to see it selected for the Mission Innovation platform, joining others in inspiring faster green hydrogen rollout and with it, the cost reduction needed to replace fossil fuels globally.»
Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, Enapter Co-Founder and Chairman.

HERZELIYA, Israel, Jan. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — StoreDot, the pioneer of extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology, today announces the availability of its first-generation 5-minute charge battery engineering samples. This represents a significant milestone for the company in its mission to eliminate the range and charging anxiety of electric vehicles (EVs), demonstrating the commercial viability of XFC batteries for the first time via a small form-factor battery cell.

StoreDot is releasing the first production batch of sample cells, which is targeted at showcasing the technology to potential EV and industry partners. This first-generation battery was used to demonstrate the full charge of a two-wheeled EV in just 5 minutes for the first time (see video) and can offer ultra-fast charging to a number of other industries, such as commercial drones and consumer electronics. The first-generation engineering samples demonstrate to EV OEMs and battery manufacturers the successful replacement of graphite in the cell’s anode using metalloid nano-particles – a key breakthrough in overcoming major issues in safety, battery cycle life and swelling.

The sample cells were produced by StoreDot’s strategic partner in ChinaEVE Energy Co., Ltd. Crucially, unlike competing technologies which require significant capital expenditure in bespoke manufacturing equipment, StoreDot XFC batteries are designed to be produced on existing Li-ion production lines at EVE Energy. The samples are compliant with UN 38.3, which ensures the safety of Li-ion batteries during shipping.

Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, comments: «StoreDot continues to go from strength to strength as we get one step closer to making our vision of 5-minute charging of EVs a commercial reality. Our team of top scientists has overcome inherent challenges of XFC such as safety, cycle life and swelling by harnessing innovative materials and cell design. Today’s announcement marks an important milestone, moving XFC for the first time beyond innovation in the lab to a commercially-viable product that is scalable for mass production. This paves the way for the launch of our second-generation, silicon-dominant anode prototype battery for electric vehicles later this year.»

In collaboration with its strategic partners, StoreDot is in the vanguard of driving mainstream adoption of electric vehicles by overcoming the critical barrier of range and charging anxiety.

Dr Myersdorf concludes: «We founded StoreDot to achieve what many said could never be done – develop batteries capable of delivering a full charge in just five minutes. We have shown that this level of XFC charging is possible – first in 2019 with an electric scooter and again six months ago with a commercial drone. We are proud to make these samples available, but today’s milestone is just the beginning. We’re on the cusp of achieving a revolution in the EV charging experience that will remove the critical barrier to mass adoption of EVs.»

About StoreDot

StoreDot is a pioneer of extreme fast charging (XFC) batteries that overcome the critical barrier to mainstream EV adoption – range and charging anxiety. The company has revolutionized the conventional Li-ion battery by designing and synthesizing proprietary organic and inorganic compounds, making it possible to fully charge an EV in just five minutes – the same time it takes to refuel a conventional combustion engine vehicle. StoreDot’s battery technology is optimized for best driver experience with XFC in Li-ion batteries, as well as future technologies for extreme energy-density (XED).

StoreDot’s strategic investors include BP, Daimler, Samsung Ventures and TDK. In 2019, the company achieved a world first by demonstrating the live full charge of a two-wheeled EV in just five minutes. In 2020, the company demonstrated the scalability of its XFC batteries for other industries, by fully charging a commercial drone in five minutes in another world first. Moving XFC battery technology from the lab to a commercially-viable product for the first time, StoreDot has launched engineering samples of its first-generation batteries that are designed to be manufactured at scale on traditional Li-lion production lines.
