Bebbington began his position in January 2021 at the start of the new year, succeeding former International Director Penny Davies.

Bebbington joined the foundation from Clark University where he taught as the Milton P. and Alice C. Higgins Professor of Environment and Society. Concurrent to his position at Clark, he served on the board of directors at Oxfam America and chaired the Programs Committee. An internationally recognized leader and scholar on extractive industries and natural resource governance, Bebbington brings more than 35 years of experience working with indigenous and rural communities, civil society, the private sector, and policymakers. His work has analyzed how extractive industries have transformed rural territories and how social conflicts have driven changes in environmental governance.

Bebbington’s focus on natural resource extraction, rights, and the environment grew out of his earlier research on small-scale agriculture, rural livelihoods, social and indigenous movements, and the changing role of nongovernmental organizations. In the course of this research, he became increasingly aware that the growth of the mineral and hydrocarbons economies was transforming patterns of resource access, livelihood options, and subnational political dynamics. Since then, he has collaborated with groups including Global Greengrants Fund, Rimisp, the Peruvian Center for Social Studies, and Oxfam to address the drivers of conflict surrounding resource extraction, the conditions under which conflict leads to change in the governance of extractives, and the relationships between extractives, infrastructure, human rights, and local development.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — New analysis of independent data for 2020 show that reported new COVID-19 infection rates amongst meat and poultry workers were five times lower in December than in May, while rates in the general population rocketed up by nine times in the same period.  

According to data from the Food and Environment Reporting Network (FERN), the meat and poultry sector was reported to have an average of 19.91 new reported cases per 100,000 workers per day in December, compared to an average of 98.39 new reported cases per 100,000 workers per day in May. 

The New York Times reports that during the same period, the average new case rate for the U.S. population rose from 7.11 cases per 100,000 people per day in May to 63.01 cases per 100,000 people per day in December.

Las mujeres eran parte de un grupo más grande que intentaba concebir tras uno o dos abortos espontáneos previos. Las mujeres que dijeron haber consumido productos de cannabis (marihuana o hachís) en las semanas previas al embarazo, o cuyas pruebas de orina dieron positivas para el uso de cannabis, tuvieron alrededor de 40% menos posibilidades de concebir en cada ciclo mensual que las mujeres que no consumían cannabis. Los investigadores analizaron datos de un estudio más amplio de más de 1.200 mujeres entre 18 y 40 años de edad, con una o dos pérdidas de embarazos. Las mujeres participaron del estudio durante hasta seis ciclos mensuales mientras intentaban quedar embarazadas, y durante todo el embarazo si se produjo la concepción. Un total de 62 mujeres (5%) tuvieron resultados positivos en la prueba de orina o declararon haber usado cannabis antes de la concepción.

En cada ciclo mensual, las mujeres que habían usado cannabis mientras intentaban concebir tuvieron 41% menos posibilidades de concebir que las mujeres que no habían consumido. Del mismo modo, la cantidad de mujeres usuarias de cannabis que quedaron embarazadas durante el estudio fue inferior al de las mujeres que no consumieron: un 42% frente a un 66%. Los autores no encontraron diferencias en las tasas de abortos espontáneos entre usuarias y no usuarias que habían logrado el embarazo.

Los autores han notado que, en comparación con las no usuarias, las mujeres que consumieron cannabis también tuvieron diferencias en cuanto a las hormonas reproductivas involucradas en la ovulación. Estas diferencias podrían potencialmente haber influido en sus posibilidades de concepción. En particular, las usuarias tenían niveles más altos de la hormona luteinizante y una mayor proporción de hormona luteinizante con respecto a la hormona folículoestimulante.

Los autores también informaron que los estudios en animales habían revelado que el uso de cannabis podría alterar el revestimiento interno del útero, disminuyendo la posibilidad de que se implante un embrión para establecer un embarazo. Los autores afirman que, hasta que haya más información disponible, las mujeres que intenten quedar embarazadas deberían estar al tanto de que el cannabis podría potencialmente afectar sus posibilidades de embarazo.
