RNA Society Awarded 2020 Power of A Award by American Society of Association Executives

MCLEAN, Va., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — MCI USA is pleased to announce that its client the RNA Society was honored by the American Society of Association Executives with a 2020 Power of A Silver Award for their innovative program that leveraged university laboratories to rapidly scale up COVID-19 testing. The Power of A Awards recognize and celebrate the extraordinary contributions associations make to society.

«We are so proud that one of our client partners, the RNA Society, is being recognized by ASAE with a prestigious Power of A Award,» said Erin Fuller, FASAE, CAE, MPA, President, Association Solutions, MCI USA. «The RNA Society’s swift response to the pandemic demonstrates how associations drive collaboration and innovation. The Society connected its members with their local health departments so they could donate both much-needed equipment and world-class scientific expertise.»

The RNA Society is dedicated to fostering research and education in the field of ribonucleic acid science. Many members work in well-stocked academic laboratories, and during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States when it was clear that the need for widespread testing was not being met, one member of the RNA Society executive committee, Dr. Olivia Rissland, PhD (Assistant Professor, University of Colorado School of Medicine) arranged donations of testing equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) to the local health department. Based on this success, she and other leaders of the RNA Society teamed up to expand these efforts and mobilize donations from Society membership, which is made up of more than 2,000 RNA scientists across the world.

RNA Society CEO Dr. Kristian Baker (Associate Professor, Case Western Reserve University) explained, «RNA Society members were perfectly positioned to provide scientific expertise, reagents and laboratory space to expand diagnostic testing for COVID-19—and our call to action was met with unfettered enthusiasm and outstanding generosity.»

MCI USA staff supporting the RNA Society noticed these initiatives and then worked to scale up the donation program by leveraging existing relationships with partners, such as the American Health Quality Association (AHQA), to identify the best way to connect RNA scientists around the country with state and local public health departments in need of testing and materials. Through this process MCI USA staff connected with National Association of City and County Health Officers (NACCHO), which served as the primary connection hub between scientists and health departments.

«By making these connections with high-level health department representatives and other healthcare organizations, we were able to coordinate arrangements with local and state health departments in charge of doing testing in all 50 states in less than a week,» commented Alison Teitelbaum, MS, MPH, CAE, Vice President, Association Solutions, MCI USA.

Thanks to this coordinated initiative, hundreds of RNA scientists donated equipment that allowed thousands of coronavirus tests to be administered, donated PPE that protected thousands of front-line medical providers, and contributed countless hours of research to the national effort to better understand the virus.

XpressBio Assists Preeminent Primate Research Center with Coronavirus Research Study

FREDERICK, Md., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The emergence of the novel coronavirus SARS‐CoV‐2 and the resulting COVID‐19 pandemic has made the development of therapeutics, vaccines, and potential cures one of the scientific research community’s top priorities. XpressBio recently provided key products, including its COVID-19 S1/S2 microplate and ELISA reagents, to one of the world’s preeminent non-human primate research centers, the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC), for a surveillance program to determine the viral status of its non‐human primate breeding colony at the University of California, Davis. XpressBio researcher William Boteler and his team also provided scientific consulting services, including a comparison of sample activities to a panel of Coronavirus antigens prepared in different cell lines.

One of seven such centers supported by the National Institutes of Health, the California National Primate Research Center has the nation’s best-characterized population of older primates—an important edge in evaluating how age affects the impact of coronavirus on vulnerable older adults with long-term conditions like hypertension and Type-2 diabetes. Considering the similarity between human and non-human primate physiology, especially with regard to respiratory systems and immune/aging patterns, the results from this study were integral in preserving and maintaining the colony’s health as well as providing information critical to the development of new COVID-19 drugs, therapies, and surgical procedures.

Approximately 2,450 animals are housed outdoors and 1,300 indoors at the CNPRC. A sentinel surveillance program to test at least 10% of the CNPRC colony– 385 animals housed in 73 different indoor rooms or outdoor enclosures—was conducted in March, April, and May 2020. 256 paired blood and swab samples were tested for SARS‐CoV‐2 antibody and RNA.

The study had important implications related to the epidemiology of SARS‐CoV‐2 in the human population and primate populations, risk of virus introduction and transmission, especially from asymptomatic carriers, and the most important components of effective infection control programs.

«Studies like this one are critically important to understanding how we can prevent and treat COVID-19, as well as future coronavirus outbreaks,» said XpressBio President and CEO Mo Hashemzadeh. «Information being gathered now will also be equally important in strategizing a more effective defense against potential new viral pandemics that may emerge in the future.»

Details of the study are available at: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jmp.12483

STOCKTON, Calif., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — California criminal defense attorney Allen Sawyer of the Law Offices of Allen Sawyer announced today that Case # CR-2019-4210705 in San Joaquin County Superior Court was settled after District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar reduced the charges for his client from felony to misdemeanor.

At the start of the jury trial, Sawyer’s client, Brian W., faced charges of contacting a minor to commit a felony and of arranging a meeting with a minor for lewd purposes. Sawyer’s opening arguments, legal motions, and exposure of evidentiary issues contributed to the DA’s reduction of the charges to misdemeanor.

The arrest of, and the charges against, Brian W. stemmed from a police decoy scenario. In such scenarios a police officer posing as a worker for an escort service extends sexual services to a text responder. After an agreement is reached, the officer claims to be a minor. Text responders who still agree to meet for the purpose of sexual services are arrested. Such an arrest brings felony charges that carry serious state prison sentences as well as lifetime sex offender registration.

Sawyer said the victory came as a great relief for his client. «It went from a state prison case with lifetime registration to a misdemeanor with suspended fine and no additional jail time,» he said. «We are very pleased with the outcome.»

MESA, Ariz., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — mySongbird is modernizing the concert experience with its new concert streaming platform and restoring our planet through the power of music.

The music industry is changing, and mySongbird’s team, which together boasts over a century of experience across music, technology, and entertainment, rose to the challenge. Even before the coronavirus gripped the music industry, canceling tours and in-person concerts, streaming was on the rise. Now, in a post-COVID world, live-streaming is gaining even more steam, up 99% this year alone. mySongbird set out to fill the void and has created a revolutionary, sustainable company harnessing the power of music to change the world for the better.

The mySongbird model is a win for everyone. Subscribers will gain access to immersive experiences through a library of past, present and future shows across numerous languages and genres. Artists will enjoy connecting with more fans and earning more income. The planet will also benefit. A minimum of 20% of mySongbird’s EBITDA will be reinvested in companies or individuals who are working on technological solutions to ensure that Planet Earth lives on indefinitely. They will seek out the greatest ideas, help entrepreneurs in their start-up phases, fund the best of these companies, and assist in their growth.

mySongbird will begin hosting safely-distanced, intimate performances this fall, meeting fans where they are through television, phones, laptops, desktop computers, tablets and more. The performances will live on after the encore, with fans able to re-watch on the mySongbird site as well as on Dish, Sling and other platforms.

Founder and CEO, Michael Mountford, said, «I created mySongbird because I realized that people pay to attend a sporting event, and then come home to watch sports on TV, but this wasn’t the case for concerts. At the same time, I also thought about how a large portion of professional athletes’ income is derived from huge TV contracts, and again, this wasn’t the case for the music industry and musicians. mySongbird was the answer to solving both of these things, and I am excited to be able to support artists and fans all while giving back to our planet.»

About mySongbird

Founded in 2020 by Michael Mountford, mySongbird is a sustainable company filling the void of premium musical entertainment on television. By providing in-person and streamed concerts, and a massive genre-spanning library, the company is able to support artists and fans simultaneously with a professionally-produced, fully immersive style. The company is also serious about doing the most good. mySongbird reinvests a minimum of 20% of their EBITDA in companies or individuals who are working on technological solutions to ensure that Planet Earth lives on indefinitely. They will seek out the greatest ideas, help entrepreneurs in their start-up phases, fund the best of these companies, and assist in their growth.

More Than 50% of U.S. K-12 Public School Students Will Be Going Back to School «Virtually» This Fall

PELHAM, N.Y., Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — More than 50% of US K-12 public school students will be attending school remotely to start the school year, according to a comprehensive, ongoing survey conducted by Burbio.com, a data service that aggregates school and community calendars nationwide. Specifically, 52% of students are projected to be learning online to start the year, 44% will be attending in-person either every day or certain days of the week, and 4% of students are in school districts that haven’t finalized plans.

«We have seen a dramatic shift to online only learning in the past three weeks,» said Burbio co-founder Julie Roche. «Large districts such as Chicago, and Sun Belt cities such as Houston and Miami along with large suburban districts such as Fairfax County Virginia were all setting plans to return with in-person learning and shifted to fully remote.»

Burbio’s data set consists of more than 80,000 K-12 school calendars across all 50 states and is dynamically updated as events are added or changed. For this initiative, Burbio actively monitors districts representing over 35,000 schools, including the 200 largest school districts in the U.S. District plans are reviewed every 72 hours to identify changes. School districts in the data set are a mix of sizes and distributed nationally in such a way to represent local decision-making across the country.

Size of district is a big factor in the approach districts are taking. The 200 largest districts are 66% virtual. The survey assumes New York City, the largest school district in the country, holds in-person schooling as announced and recently approved by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Breaking down the 44% in-person, approximately 19% of students nationally will be attending a hybrid format where students only attend certain days. Twenty five percent will go to school daily, meaning one quarter of K-12 public school students in the country will be attending school every day to start the year.

«We expect this situation to stay fluid for the entire academic year and we will continue to measure it,» said Roche. «Many districts have thresholds for Covid-19 levels that could result in converting back to remote learning. Other districts are planning to revisit the ‘on-line’ decision as soon as September and could convert to in-person models.»
