Most pesticides are inherently toxic, which is why the federal government regulates them. However, just because they are regulated does not guarantee that they are safe. Pesticides are tested for safety one pesticide at a time, yet they are often sold in combinations.

Many pesticides, even though they are government-approved, are carcinogenic, neurotoxic, developmental toxins and endocrine disruptors. The federal government does not have the funding to do all its own pesticide testing, so the government relies on the pesticide industry to test its own pesticide for its safety. This fact remains a problem.

John Wargo, Ph.D., Professor of Environmental Health and Politics at Yale University’s School of the Environment said, «Pesticides pose a special threat to the youngest in our population. It is now well-established that pesticide residues easily cross the placenta and expose developing human embryos and fetuses. Pesticides also cross the blood-brain barrier, giving additional evidence that pesticides circulate throughout human tissues.»

Children take in more pesticides relative to their body weight than adults. In addition, their developing organs are more vulnerable to pesticide toxicity. Women who are pregnant should be particularly careful about any pesticide exposure.

Hugh Taylor, M.D., Chair of Yale’s Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Yale University School of Medicine, said, «Pregnant women should avoid using pesticides as pesticides have birth and reproductive health effects. Using organic methods will better protect your children, born and unborn, as well as your pets.»

Higher pesticide exposure levels happen indoors where the pesticides are often more concentrated. The risk of developing blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma increases significantly in children exposed to pesticides indoors, which a recent meta-analysis has shown. A correlation between pesticide exposure and childhood brain tumors has also been observed.

David Brown, Sc.D., Public Health toxicologist, said, «People are routinely exposed to pesticide mixtures every day in the foods and water they consume simply by eating a normal diet. Adding direct pesticide exposures on lawns and in homes increases the risks that pesticide exposures pose.»

Because of these risks, EHHI recommends using organic pest control methods first, and only when those methods fail should pesticides be applied, and then in a way that protects both children and pets.

Pesticide labeling also remains a problem. Labels are only required to address acute toxicity, such as what to do if you swallow the pesticide or get the pesticide in your eyes. The labels’ scant warnings are in tiny print, while the benefits of the pesticide are in large type. As well, the labels do not warn about the long-term health effects, such as cancer or neurotoxicity – this, too, is a serious problem.

Nancy Alderman, MES, President of EHHI said, «EPA should require that labels on pesticide packaging be both in English and Spanish. Many pesticide applicators and users of pesticides are Spanish-speaking, and it is critically important that they be able to read clearly the instructions and health warnings on the packaging.»

Professor Wargo concluded by saying, «The United States has been far too lenient on which pesticides are allowed and where they are allowed in the United States. Many pesticides are banned in the European Union, Brazil and China, yet are still allowed in the United States.

Queer professionals such as transgender Sri Lankan-American performer, writer, and community activist, D’Lo, actress, writer, and producer, Rain Valdez, Outfest Executive Director, Damien S. QTYPE is a triannual publication that focuses on sharing stories from queer artists to provide representation and inspiration for lgbtq youth around the world. NEW YORK, Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Wix.com Ltd. (Nasdaq: WIX) («Wix»), a leader in website creation, today announced the pricing of $500 million aggregate principal amount of 0% Convertible Senior Notes due 2025 (the «Notes») in a private offering (the «Offering») to qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the «Securities Act»). In connection with the Offering, Wix has granted the initial purchasers of the Notes an option to purchase, within a 13-day period beginning on, and including, the date on which the Notes are first issued, up to an additional $75 million aggregate principal amount of the Notes solely to cover over-allotments. The sale of the Notes to the initial purchasers is expected to settle on August 13, 2020, subject to customary closing conditions.

The Notes will not bear regular interest, and the principal amount of the Notes will not accrete. The Notes will mature on August 15, 2025, unless earlier repurchased, redeemed or converted in accordance with their terms prior to such date.  The Notes will be convertible based on an initial conversion rate of 2.4813 ordinary shares of Wix per $1,000 principal amount of Notes (equivalent to an initial conversion price of approximately $403.01 per share, which represents a conversion premium of approximately 45.0% to the last reported sale price of Wix’s ordinary shares on The Nasdaq Global Select Market on August 10, 2020). Prior to the close of business on the business day immediately preceding February 15, 2025, the Notes will be convertible at the option of the holders of the Notes only upon the satisfaction of specified conditions and during certain periods. On or after February 15, 2025 until the close of business on the second scheduled trading day preceding the maturity date, the Notes will be convertible at the option of the holders of Notes at any time regardless of these conditions. Conversions of the Notes will be settled in cash, ordinary shares of Wix or a combination thereof, at Wix’s election.

Wix may not redeem the Notes prior to August 21, 2023, except in the event of certain tax law changes. On or after August 21, 2023, Wix may redeem, for cash, all or part of the Notes if the last reported sale price of its ordinary shares has been at least 130% of the conversion price then in effect for at least 20 trading days (whether or not consecutive) during any 30 consecutive trading day period (including the last trading day of such period) ending on, and including, the trading day immediately preceding the date on which Wix provides notice of the redemption at a redemption price equal to 100% of the principal amount of the Notes to be redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid interest to, but excluding, the redemption date. 

Holders of the Notes will have the right to require Wix to repurchase all or a portion of their Notes upon the occurrence of a fundamental change (as defined in the indenture governing the Notes) at a cash repurchase price equal to 100% of the principal amount of the Notes to be repurchased, plus any accrued and unpaid interest to, but excluding, the fundamental change repurchase date. In connection with certain corporate events or following Wix’s delivery of a notice of redemption, Wix will, under certain circumstances, increase the conversion rate for a holder who elects to convert its Notes in connection with such corporate event or to convert its Notes called for redemption in connection with such notice of redemption, as the case may be.

When issued, the Notes will be Wix’s senior unsecured obligations and will rank senior in right of payment to any of Wix’s unsecured indebtedness that is expressly subordinated in right of payment to the Notes; equal in right of payment to any of Wix’s unsecured indebtedness that is not so subordinated (including Wix’s 0% Convertible Senior Notes due 2023); effectively junior in right of payment to any of Wix’s secured indebtedness to the extent of the value of the assets securing such indebtedness; and structurally junior to all indebtedness and other liabilities (including trade payables) of Wix’s subsidiaries.

In connection with the pricing of the Notes, Wix has entered into privately negotiated capped call transactions with certain of the initial purchasers of the Offering or their respective affiliates and other financial institutions (in this capacity, the «Option Counterparties»). The capped call transactions are expected generally to reduce the potential dilution to the ordinary shares of Wix upon any conversion of Notes and/or to offset any cash payments Wix is required to make in excess of the principal amount of converted Notes, as the case may be, with such reduction and/or offset subject to a cap. The cap price of the capped call transactions will initially be $555.88 per share, which represents a premium of 100% over the last reported sale price of the ordinary shares of Wix of $277.94 per share on August 10, 2020, and is subject to certain adjustments under the terms of the capped call transactions. If the initial purchasers of the Offering exercise their option to purchase additional Notes, Wix expects to enter into additional capped call transactions with the Option Counterparties.

Wix has been advised that, in connection with establishing their initial hedges of the capped call transactions, the Option Counterparties or their respective affiliates expect to purchase ordinary shares of Wix and/or enter into various derivative transactions with respect to the ordinary shares of Wix concurrently with or shortly after the pricing of the Notes. This activity could increase (or reduce the size of any decrease in) the market price of the ordinary shares of Wix, the Notes and Wix’s 0% Convertible Senior Notes due 2023 at that time. In addition, the Option Counterparties or their respective affiliates may modify their hedge positions by entering into or unwinding various derivatives with respect to the ordinary shares of Wix and/or by purchasing or selling ordinary shares or other securities of Wix in secondary market transactions from time to time prior to the maturity of the Notes (and are likely to do so following any conversion, repurchase, or redemption of the Notes, to the extent Wix exercises the relevant election under the capped call transactions). Florida’s eviction moratorium was yet again approaching an expiration deadline of 12:01 a.m. Saturday. Gov. Ron DeSantis extended the moratorium via an order issued Wednesday night, despite being mum on his intentions in the days before. The extension also made some changes to the moratorium, such as explicitly requiring tenants to begin repaying their missed rent when they are «no longer adversely affected by the COVID-19 emergency,» which the order defines as having experienced job loss or other income reduction directly attributable to the pandemic.

But in the time since evictions have been frozen, some housing advocates and officials have proposed doing more to help tenants like Evans, beyond simply delaying the rising logjam of evictions. (1)

A variety of parties have a vested interest in resolution to the eviction challenge.

P&O Cruises extends pause to mid-November and cancels long cruises following FCO guidance

SOUTHAMPTON, England, Aug. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In an acknowledgement of Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) guidance, P&O Cruises has extended its pause in operations until November 12, 2020, and also cancelled two long itineraries due to depart in January 2021.

In the company’s latest video, P&O Cruises President Paul Ludlow said: «It is clear that whilst the guidance is in place, it is not advisable for us to resume operations.

«As well as cancelling all cruises up until November 12, 2020, we will, sadly, also be cancelling Aurora’s Caribbean and South America Adventure and Arcadia’s World Cruise. Given long-term planning, combined with the complexity and length of these long-haul itineraries and evolving border restrictions, we need to ensure that we adhere to the guidance as it stands. I know that these January cruises, in particular, are holidays of a lifetime and we are so sorry for the disappointment that these cancellations will cause.

«We continue to work in partnership with public health agencies at the highest level as well as Department for Transport; EU Healthy Gateways and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry association. We will follow all applicable guidelines to enhance our already stringent measures to keep our guests and crew healthy and well and we will not resume sailing until this approved framework is in place. Fundamentally, we will be adopting best practice within the travel industry.

«The good news is that confidence in cruising is strong and we are seeing increasing and significant demand from our guests. We know that the FCO guidance is under constant review and we are hopeful that, as they are aware of the work the industry is doing, this will change before too long.»

Guests booked on the cancelled cruises will automatically receive an enhanced 125% Future Cruise Credit (FCC) or alternatively can fill in the website form for a 100% refund.

Ludlow continued: «We have invested significantly in new systems and technology to speed up the refund process and to date we have refunded tens of thousands of guests, although it is heartening to see that the majority of our guests have opted for the FCC so they have a holiday to look forward to in the future.»

He also confirmed that the company will take delivery of much anticipated new ship Iona «before the autumn.»
