WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The voice of nearly 45,000 current and former National Guard officers is offering all runners and walkers a chance to support the telling of the Guard story.

The opportunity is the NGAUS Virtual 5K, which is open to all. Cost is $30, with proceeds going to the National Guard Educational Foundation, which tells all 384 years of the Guard story. Among its programs is the National Guard Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Registered participants will set their own 3.1-mile course and run or walk it between Aug. 24 and Aug. 30. Each will receive a commemorative medal in the mail. Postage is included in the registration fee.

More information and registration is available at https://runsignup.com/NGAUSvirtual5k. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Aug. 16.

«Our annual fun run is normally an event at our conference,» said retired Brig. Gen. J. Roy Robinson, the NGAUS and NGEF president. «We’re going virtual this year, so we opened the run to anyone who would like to support our efforts to tell the Guard story.»

The Guard’s 384th year is one of its most unique. Thousands of Guard soldiers and airmen across every state, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia have been responding to the coronavirus pandemic since March.

They have helped operate drive-through testing centers, delivered food and protective equipment, disinfected nursing homes, and even staffed call centers to help the jobless file for unemployment benefits.

Meanwhile, thousands of other Guardsmen have deployed overseas or responded to civil unrest. In early June, more than 120,000 Guardsmen were on duty at home or abroad.

NGAUS is conducting the virtual 5K in conjunction with its annual conference, which will be livestreamed from Washington, D.C., Aug. 28-29. Speakers include service chiefs and the new senior leaders of the National Guard Bureau.

More conference details are available at www.ngaus.org/events/142nd-general-conference.

About NGAUS: The association includes nearly 45,000 current or former Guard officers. It was created in 1878 to provide unified National Guard representation in Washington. In their first productive meeting after Reconstruction, militia officers from the North and South formed the association with the goal of obtaining better equipment and training by educating Congress on Guard requirements. Today, 142 years later, NGAUS has the same mission.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Over the past several months, the United States and the rest of the world find themselves in the midst of unexpected and unwanted crises. Whether it is racial violence, political change or inaction, economic hardship or a crippling pandemic, people of faith are looking for ways to respond to what is happening in their lives, families, and communities.

«Rally: Communal Prayers for Lovers of Jesus and Justice» speaks to readers with great faith, those seeking deeper faith, people new to prayer, or anyone looking for an authentic way to pray together. It reminds readers that they can take action in the face of fear, evil, and injustice.

Compiled and edited by Britney Winn Lee, «Rally» was released by Fresh Air Books on August 1. Lee is the director of a community arts program in Shreveport, Louisiana. An artist and word-wielder since childhood, Lee is the author of «Deconstructed Do-Gooder: A Memoir About Learning Mercy the Hard Way» and «The Boy with Big, Big Feelings.» She led a team of more than 45 writers to contribute to this collection of reflections with call-and-response prayers meant to be prayed as a group.

«Rally» contains more than 50 litanies (prayers) for loving our neighbors, our bodies, for listening to one another, for those who have been wounded by the church, victims, perpetrators, and many others. In this resource, readers will find prayers that evoke hope and connection, laments about destruction of the earth, and pleas for loving alike though we don’t think alike.

Contributors include Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, D. L. Mayfield, Onleilove Chika Alston, Delonte Harrod, Patrice Gopo, Bruce Reyes-Chow, Rachel G. Hackenberg, and Michael T. McRay, among others.

Prayers in «Rally» spur people to draw courage from one another and take positive steps for change. The words of hope found in this book will motivate readers to gather (even if only virtually) and grieve, meditate, and organize for action.

«This is a prayer book for a revolution,» Shane Claiborne writes in the foreword of «Rally»—»a revolution of love and compassion and justice.»

NEW YORK, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. LaVern McCants, a fearless author with a doctorate in education, parent advocate, School Improvement Consultant, motivational speaker, and former educator, stated that «it is remarkable that many schools are choosing to provide remote learning; this is something that should take place in every school. The foremost important thing that school officials should do is to provide safety for students and school personnel.

McCants also stated that silence on the issue of reopening schools is no longer an option; instead, it is essential to demand to ban schools from reopening and enforce that remote learning is the only learning option until there is a proven cure for coronavirus. The virus will continue to spread massively if schools reopen. It is unrealistic that students would continuously practice social distancing while at school. Schools are a hot spot. Lives are precious. One person infected by the virus is too much! Let us put a stop to the individuals that are demonstrating senseless behavior.»

Dr. McCants ask that parents act based on the following:

  • negligence claim for the safety of children and adolescents
  • unjust consideration for school personnel
  • assuming that educators would not effectively teach because keeping their students safe would be their primary concern

McCants believes that the virus will continue to spread based on the following:
a). daily contact on school buses; in classrooms; in the lunchroom; on playgrounds and in physical education classes
b). touching surfaces
c). numerous reliable sources state that the virus is airborne

McCants’ Solutions:

  • McCants suggest that remote teaching occurs until there is a proven cure for coronavirus.
  • School personnel is allowed to handle their educational obligations remotely via Zoom, Webinar, Skype, or other remote options.
  • School personnel will be required to be accountable as they are in traditional settings but allowed the right to teach their classes remotely.
  • Tutoring lines are made available for all school districts throughout the United States.
  • Teachers, school administrators, and support staff members are paid regular salaries with no interruptions with their salaries. With today’s technology, school personnel can still be accountable for providing sound teaching without brick-and-mortar.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Seminole Gaming today announced a further upgrade of its «Safe + Sound» program with the addition of dozens of program enforcement specialists at all Seminole Hard Rock and Seminole Casinos in Florida.

The new team members will be hired across five Seminole Gaming locations to focus on managing guest compliance with all program elements: proper use of required masks or face coverings, social distancing, crowd control and remaining stationary while eating or drinking. Program enforcement specialists wear distinctive uniforms to create greater guest awareness of this important issue.  Guests must adhere to Safe + Sound program requirements or be asked to leave the property.

Hiring events are being held at several Seminole Gaming locations.  The next South Florida hiring event is scheduled to take place Wednesday, Aug. 12.  Interested applicants should apply on gotoworkhappy.com to receive an invitation to attend.

«The addition of more Safe + Sound program enforcement specialists is a further enhancement of our industry-leading commitment to ensure the health and safety of our guests and team members,» said Jim Allen, Seminole Gaming CEO and Chairman of Hard Rock International.  «Our comprehensive approach to dealing with COVID-19 is meant to ensure public safety and give our guests peace of mind when they return.»

The program upgrade applies to Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, Seminole Classic Casino in Hollywood, and Seminole Brighton Casino, on the Brighton Seminole Reservation northwest of Lake Okeechobee.  Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee remains closed, with no announced date for its reopening.

Seminole Gaming unveiled its extensive «Safe + Sound» program with the reopening of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa in May.  It was extended to four more casino openings in June.  In July, Seminole Gaming announced an upgrade to the program to require that guests remain stationary while eating, drinking or smoking.

Safe + Sound program guidelines include:

  • Temperature checks for all guests and team members prior to entry. Any guest or team member with a temperature above CDC guidelines of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit will not be allowed entry.
  • A requirement that all guests wear masks or cloth face coverings that meet CDC guidelines, without exception. Masks will be provided to guests as needed.
  • Thousands of slot machines are turned off to help ensure social distancing on the casino floors.
  • New Plexiglas barriers divide players at table games and customer service areas.
  • Signs are posted throughout the casino complexes to encourage social distancing and help ensure adherence to Safe + Sound program guidelines.
  • A new «Safe + Sound Clean Team» focuses on cleaning and disinfecting surfaces throughout the casino complexes, with special emphasis on high-touch surfaces and common areas.
  • Hand-sanitizing stations are available on the casino floors, at the entrances and throughout the casino complexes.

Anthem Foundation and March of Dimes Address Health Inequity in Maternal Healthcare

ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — March of Dimes, the leader in the fight for the health of all moms and babies, and longtime partner Anthem Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Anthem, Inc., today announced a $1.1 million grant with their latest plans to tackle America’s maternal and infant health crisis, which is particularly devastating for communities of color. The partnership aims to close the health equity gap by addressing the racial disparities and social determinants of health that have disproportionally impacted Black mothers who are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes and have premature babies compared to all other women.

March of Dimes Foundation Logo

The new grant will support programs in 16 states and Washington D.C with a core component of the grant focusing on health equity partnerships with more than 20 hospitals, which includes Breaking Through Implicit Bias in Maternal Healthcare training. According to the 2003 National Academies for Science, Engineering and Medicine, «racial and ethnic minorities tend to receive a lower quality of healthcare than non-minorities, even when access-related factors, such as patients’ insurance status and income, are controlled.» In response, March of Dimes developed this training, in collaboration with Quality Interactions, to improve patient-provider communications and treatment decisions, contributing to improved quality of care at a critical intervention point. The course provides an overview of implicit bias, its impact on the maternal infant health crisis, history of structural racism in the United States, strategies for providers to both mitigate racial bias in maternity care and to commit to a culture of equity.

The grant will also support programs for moms and babies, such as Supportive Pregnancy Care and interconception care.  Through Supportive Pregnancy Care, pregnant women receive their clinical care, share support with other women at a similar stage in pregnancy, and gain knowledge and skills related to pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. Interconception care programs help new moms to get information and services that promote birth spacing, smoking cessation, and mental health.

«The U.S. is in the midst of a maternal and infant health crisis, which is particularly devastating to women and babies of color. Data show that the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations in the world for childbirth,» said Dr. Rahul Gupta, Chief Medical and Health Officer, Senior Vice President and Interim Chief Scientific Officer at March of Dimes. «Roughly every 12 hours a woman dies from pregnancy-related causes, and the CDC reports that 60 percent are preventable.  Programs like these, supported by the Anthem Foundation, are invaluable in making a positive impact for moms and babies.»

In the U.S. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causesi and Black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthdaysii compared to their White counterparts. Systemic racial injustice has affected not only health care, but also social determinants of health, such as  access to food, education, housing and jobs. These factors, together with the direct experience of racial discrimination and unequal treatment, have built a health equity gap that is directly and negatively impacting moms and babies of color.

«Anthem and its Foundation continue to lead with our commitment to improving lives and communities across our nation,» said Razia Hashmi, MD, MPH, Vice President for Commercial Clinical Operations at Anthem. «For over 10 years, our partnership with March of Dimes has provided over 47,000 individuals with access to care. We are working tirelessly to create enduring change in communities across the country, and addressing the factors driving disparities in our health system and in society as a whole.»

Over the past decade, Anthem Foundation has contributed close to $8 million to support March of Dimes programs aimed at reducing premature birth across the country. These programs have had a significant impact with only 7.3 percent of participants in group prenatal care delivering prematurely, compared to a national average of 10 percent.

Coronavirus Safety Measures Required for School Reopening, According to Beyond Pesticides

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — As parents, educators, and administrators decide whether to open schools with in-person teaching, there are escalating concerns about the ability of schools to put in place the programs necessary to protect the health of students, staff, and their families from coronavirus (COVID-19). A key part of most school reopening plans is the fogging or misting of classrooms with toxic disinfectants, raising questions about safe and effective disinfection and sanitizing practices, in addition to social practices that public health officials have advised, to prevent transmission of the virus.

«While people are eager to reopen schools, it is critical that they adopt basic cleaning and safe and effective disinfection procedures, ventilation and infrastructure changes, and adequate maintenance support,» said Jay Feldman, executive director of Beyond Pesticides. «However, these basic practices must follow the recommendations of public health officials, including a less than one percent community transmission rate, social distancing and masks, adequate disease detection testing, contact tracing, and quarantining procedures,» he said.

In spite of the lower incidence of virus among children, many are infected with the virus without or before expressing symptoms. Asymptomatic persons, including children, may carry a high viral load and may infect teachers and other workers at school. They may bring the disease home, where they can transmit the virus to parents, grandparents, and other vulnerable family members.

Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends cleaning surfaces before disinfecting, fogging with disinfectant is not a time-saver. Paper and other absorbent materials must be removed from the space where the fogging is conducted. Since the goal is to provide a quick application method that does not require hands-on treatment, no area-wide fogging or misting is adequate at this time.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) advises retrofitting HVAC systems with the highest filtering efficiency, portable HEPA/UV machines, «purge/flush» air systems, among other recommendations. A report issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) on June 4, 2020 finds, «About half (an estimated 54 percent) of public school districts need to update or replace multiple building systems or features in their schools, according to GAO’s national survey of school districts.»

For the facts on meeting health protection needs for school reopening, see Beyond Pesticides’ factsheet on reopening schools and web page on Disinfectants and Sanitizers for more information. See www.beyondpesticides.org.

OXNARD, Calif., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — In alignment with their commitment to helping enrich the communities where they operate, Reiter Affiliated Companies (RAC), makes philanthropic donations to local organizations.

With the COVID-19 pandemic changing many lives in a significant manner, nonprofits across the country are facing increased demand for their services. At the same time, there is a decrease in funding for these organizations as they are being forced to cancel critical fundraising events and regular donors are struggling themselves. To help ease this burden in their local communities, RAC philanthropy committees directed donations to several non-profits throughout California.

In Oxnard, a donation of $25,000 was issued to Future Leaders of America which helps local immigrant families with direct financial assistance to pay for basic needs during the COVID19 pandemic. RAC also donated $13,000 to the Food Share of Ventura County who continues to provide food and fresh produce for families experiencing food insecurity.

«These are unprecedented times,» said Eric Reiter, RAC VP of CA Operations. «Funding for non-profits is falling, but the needs of our communities are not. We are incredibly thankful to be able to support these organizations during this time so that in turn, they can continue supporting our youth and families.»

In Santa Maria, RAC donated $7,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mid Central Coast, which is currently raising funds to provide groceries to the young people participating in its clubs. They also donated $3,000 to the Food Bank of Santa Barbara County, supporting them as they try to keep up with surging demand and ensure that all families have access to food.

«In partnership with Santa Barbara County Foodbank, Gold Coast Packing, and Reiter Affiliated, we now serve approximately 1,200 individuals each week (400-500 bags of fresh food weekly). Many of the recipients of the food distribution service have never needed outside help or been reliant on safety net programs prior to the COVID-19 crisis,» stated Jeremy Deming, CEO Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast.

In Watsonville, RAC donated $11,000 to Santa Cruz Community Ventures, an organization that is helping individuals and families with one-time emergency assistance in this time of crisis in the form of gift cards, rent assistance, and food. Additionally, RAC donated $7,000 to Youth NOW, an organization dedicated to helping youth grow personally and academically through individualized programs. In response to the coronavirus, they are providing virtual tutoring services to support students as they adapt to online learning, as well as providing books, art supplies, and games for students to enjoy at home.

RAC also donated $5,000 to Monarch Services, a safe shelter for domestic violence victims, which has seen a swift uptick in the number of clients they are serving since the shelter-in-place order was mandated.

Furthermore, to help protect essential workers in Watsonville, RAC donated 5,000 KN95 masks to Clinica del Valle de Salinas, Salud Para la Gente, Natividad Hospital, and Watsonville Community Hospital. RAC also provided $5,000 worth of scholarships for children of essential workers to receive free child care at the YMCA.

As a family-owned farming company, RAC is proud to support the important work of community organizations that contribute to a greater quality of life for everyone.

WINDSOR, Conn., Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — SS&C Technologies Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSNC) today announced new integrations for SS&C Advent’s Black Diamond Wealth Platform with Schwab (NYSE: SCHW) Advisor Center®. These integrations provide users of Schwab’s custodial platform with additional opportunities to eliminate paper-based processes and further digitize their workflows.

The latest integration enhancements include:

  • Straight-through processing of management fees: Through Black Diamond’s client billing functionality, advisors can send management fees directly to Schwab with a few clicks.
  • Digital address change: Address changes can be digitally initiated within Black Diamond, without the need for paper forms.
  • Service center: Advisors can now create Service Requests for Schwab’s service teams and check the status of open cases directly from within Black Diamond.
  • Straight-through processing of trades through the Financial Information Exchange (FIX®) network: Advisors can place trades faster, more efficiently, and with less risk of errors directly from Black Diamond Rebalancer’s trading system.

The new features add to existing integrations with the Schwab Advisor Services platform, which include digital account opening, single sign-on, and money transfer capabilities. Also, Schwab statements and tax documents can be shared automatically to each end client’s Black Diamond Client Experience Portal. Advisors can view transactions, balances and positions in near-real-time, and have secure, real-time access to account-level data from Schwab Advisor Center.

«The recent integration enhancements with Black Diamond allow advisors who use Schwab to streamline their workflows further and complete most tasks online. These integrations align well with our continuing goal to provide advisors with the tools they need to enhance the advisor experience, as well as the experience of their clients,» said Kartik Srinivasan, Managing Director, Digital Product Management for Schwab Advisor Services
