NEW YORK, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — China General Chamber of Commerce – USA (CGCC) and CGCC Foundation today released its 2020 Annual Business Survey Report on Chinese Enterprises in the U.S. Conducted in partnership with PwC, the survey found that over 50% of Chinese companies operating in the U.S. have been adversely affected by the escalating anti-China rhetoric in recent months, with 36% of those companies citing that tensions led to financial losses. Another challenge Chinese companies face in the U.S. market is barriers on immigration, which 42% of respondents cited as key area of concern for future growth. This has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has also contributed to an uncertain market environment. Companies almost unanimously (90%) said that their financial performance has been negatively impacted by COVID-19, of which 50% cite the impact to be severe.

However, despite these complex issues and the ongoing uncertainty, Chinese companies continue to be committed to the U.S. market, with 60% of those surveyed stating that their investments in America remains the same. They are also optimistic about the market recovery in the U.S., with more than half (55%) of those surveyed expecting the economy to rebound from COVID-19 within the next year.

BCBSIL today cut the ribbon on the 130,000 square foot space in Marshfield Plaza at 119th Street and Marshfield Avenue. The site has been transformed from an abandoned retail store into a vast employee workspace coupled with a community-facing Blue Door Neighborhood CenterSM (BDNC).

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — On Friday, August 7, 2020, a coalition of more than 120 NGOs submitted a letter to Facebook, urging the social media company to implement a comprehensive hate speech policy on anti-Semitism that incorporates the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism.

Online anti-Semitism has spiked in recent years. Community standards on Facebook and other social media platforms have failed to address the growing threat. Facebook’s Director of Content Policy Stakeholder Engagement, Peter Stern, shared in a webcast last May that Facebook did not have a robust policy aimed at combatting online anti-Semitism. While he described the usefulness of the IHRA working definition, he admitted that the company did not fully embrace it.  More recently, in June, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly committed to revising the company’s policies to fight hate speech.

The IHRA definition of anti-Semitism was already adopted by the U.S. State Department and over 40 other countries. The coalition explains «the full IHRA working definition of anti-Semitism provides Facebook an effective, neutral, and nuanced tool to protect Jewish users from hate speech and imagery that incites hate and oftentimes leads to violence.»

Drand is a distributed randomness beacon that generates verifiable, unpredictable, and unbiasable random numbers as a service available for all. Drand’s largest deployment is known as the League of Entropy, and its founding members include Cloudflare, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Kudelski Security, Protocol Labs, and the University of Chile. BOSTON, Aug. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Saga Education, a nonprofit that provides consistent, personalized, in-school-day math tutoring and mentoring, today announced the expansion of its tutoring program in New York City and Chicago. Supported by nearly $6M in funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Citadel Founder and CEO Ken Griffin, philanthropic dollars will enable Saga Education to reach 1,600 new high school students in under resourced schools in the 2020-21 school year.

In partnership with leaders in two of the nation’s largest school districts, the program will scale through a combination of public and private funding and employ 187 tutors in a service year model. The Gates Foundation’s support will expand the program online to 1,000 students per year across six schools in New York City over two years. Griffin’s support will scale the program by 600 additional students across five schools in Chicago this academic year, bringing the total served in Chicago to 2120 students in 20 schools. The Saga model can be delivered in person, or online, by professional tutors.

Even before the pandemic, research has found that many students arrive to high school three or more years behind grade level, especially in math — a key barrier to graduation. 80 percent of students who drop out of high school cite course failures as their number one reason and Algebra 1 is the course most frequently failed.

Since 2013, the University of Chicago Education Lab has researched Saga Education’s intensive math tutoring model in Chicago Public Schools and in New York City, finding that it substantially improves academic outcomes for high school students. In two randomized controlled trials, students who received Saga tutoring learned as much as an extra two and a half years of math in one academic year – the equivalent to closing up to 50 percent of the black-white test score gap in one school year. The randomized controlled trials also found that Saga’s tutoring model reduced math course failure rates by 60 percent.
