DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., Aug. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — U.S. technology-related employment, which has expanded by more than 200,000 positions so far this year, experienced a pause in job growth in July, according to an analysis by CompTIA, the nonprofit association for the global technology industry.

The nation’s technology sector scaled back by an estimated 17,300 positions last month, a combination of both technical and non-technical roles, CompTIA’s review of the latest Employment Situation report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals. #JobsReport

IT occupations in all sectors of the economy declined by an estimated 134,000 jobs.

Even with the July job losses, net IT employment is up by more than 203,000 positions since the outbreak of COVID-19. The unemployment rate for IT occupations is 4.4%, less than half of the national unemployment rate of 10.2%.

Over the past five years annual monthly job gains occurred, on average, in six months and job losses were recorded in the other six months. Year to date in 2020 there have been five months of job gains and two months of job losses.

«After several months of tech job gains exceeding expectations in a very difficult economic environment, a pause in tech hiring was not unexpected,» said Tim Herbert, executive vice president for research and market intelligence at CompTIA.

U.S. employer job postings for IT occupations declined in July but still totaled more than 235,000 for the month. The top five job roles companies were looking to fill were software and application developers (70,600 job postings), IT support specialists (21,400), systems engineers and architects (19,100), systems analysts (15,600) and IT project managers (13,300).

California, Texas, Virginia, New York and North Carolina had the highest numbers of IT job postings last month. Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia, Maine and North Dakota recorded the highest month-over-month increase in job postings, though the gains were modest.

At the metro level, employers in New York, Washington, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles led the list for the highest number of IT job postings, though in each instance the total numbers were down from June.

Among specific industries, professional, scientific and technical services (39,956), finance and insurance (18,756), manufacturing (17,473), information (11,095) and retail trade (7,042) had the highest numbers of postings for IT positions.

Detroit Experts: Secretary DeVos and President Trump Gambling With Lives of Students, Teachers, and Parents By Forcing School Reopenings

DETROIT, Aug. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Detroit experts heavily criticized U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and President Trump this week on a webinar hosted by the non-profit, Protect Our Public Schools (POPS). The webinar, «How Do We Safely Reopen Schools? Detroit Experts Weigh In,» explored the current challenges and issues facing the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) with the start of the new school year roughly a month away.

«Given the level of prevalence of COVID in the community right now, opening the schools [means] there will inevitably be cases,» said Dr. Eric Kessell, a lecturer at Wayne State University specializing in public health and epidemiology. «If the decision is made to reopen in person, it’ll be important to have those plans well-developed and published and vetted within the community.»

President Trump and Secretary DeVos are pushing to force all schools to reopen across the country without a safe plan—regardless of local infection rates. Secretary DeVos has done little to ensure public school districts have personal protective equipment, school nurses, adequate building space, proper HVAC systems, or the expertise to guide schools through this crisis.

«Betsy DeVos, as well as Trump, the puppet master, is playing games with the lives of people all over the country,» said Michigan Representative for District 8, Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo. «You can’t market your way into convincing parents that it’s safe, or teachers that it’s safe. There should be a rubric or some type of guideline to highlight checkoffs that show that the HVAC systems are up to date. If they’re not new, that they are being serviced regularly.»

President Trump and Secretary DeVos are pushing to force schools to reopen at a time when experts such as Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, are warning of increased and widespread COVID-19 transmission. Earlier this week, Dr. Birx said, «The epidemic right now is different, and it’s more widespread and it’s both rural and urban.»

LaMar Lemmons, who served as President of the Detroit Board of Education and a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives, slammed the federal approach to reopening schools. «As the billionaire sports entertainment enterprise owners, and their millionaire players cannot protect themselves from COVID…if they’re still continuously having outbreaks, how can we protect the least of [us] in the Detroit area,» said Lemmons.

Parents, teachers, administrators and public school advocates have pointed to under-investment in education by the Trump Administration as an issue impacting public schools across the country. Out of the roughly $2.2 trillion in the CARES Act, only $13.5 billion of that went to K-12 public schools, or less than one percent.

U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is currently being sued by a coalition of attorneys general, including Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, for unlawfully diverting CARES Act dollars to wealthy, private schools.

«If the President’s son’s school is not opening, I don’t understand why Betsy DeVos is sending money that should be for COVID protection to private schools that are going to do virtual learning,» said Dr. Jimmy Womack, a retired physician and former President of the Detroit Board of Education. «What are they doing with that money?»

LADERA RANCH, Calif., Aug. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — SmartStop Self Storage REIT, Inc. («SmartStop» or the «Company» ), a self-managed and fully-integrated self-storage company with approximately $1.6 billion of self storage assets under management, today announced the completion of the first solar panel project as part of a broader Company-wide initiative to reduce SmartStop’s carbon footprint and become more energy efficient. The project at Mt. Pleasant was designed and installed in cooperation with Warner Energy, LLC.

The panels, which were installed at SmartStop’s Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina location, are expected to collectively contribute energy output of 61.38 kilowatt photovoltaics (kW PV), resulting in an annualized savings of 81,500 kilowatt hours (kWh). At full capacity, the electricity savings generated from this system is equivalent to replacing or removing:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions from ~12.4 passenger vehicles driven for one year;
  • Emissions from a single passenger vehicle driven 142,987 miles;
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from approx. 9.8 homes’ annualized electricity use;
  • CO2 sequestered from ~75.3 acres of U.S. forests in one year.

The Company plans to deploy similar installations at various locations throughout the U.S. and Canada over the course of the next few years, including 10 projects installed by the end of 2020 which are projected to generate over 1.3 million kWh each year.

«This solar panel installation at our Mt. Pleasant location is the first of many projects we have planned in the coming months and over the next few years,» said Michael McClure, Chief Executive Officer of SmartStop. «As property owners, we have an obligation that extends to our customers, our business partners and our surrounding communities to act as a responsible, ethical corporate steward. Beyond meeting our essential responsibilities to the environment, we’re also focused on maintaining energy-efficient operations that meet the demands of a modern self storage operation. Over time, we expect our broader green-focused initiatives and other value-added capital investments will generate material energy and cost savings, and this launch represents a great first step in the right direction.»

Service has been restored to approximately 566,000 JCP&L customers – more than 72% of the 788,000 customers impacted by the storm.

More than 8,000 utility personnel from JCP&L, other FirstEnergy companies, and partner utilities from electric industry mutual assistance organizations continue working around the clock to restore power to about 221,000 JCP&L customers who remain without power, which includes approximately 155,000 customers in the hardest hit areas of Morris, Monmouth and Union counties. Utility crews have replaced more than 68,000 feet of wire, hundreds of poles and crossarms, and worked through more than 360 closed roads to repair service.

Based on current outages and damage assessments, approximately 85% of affected customers are expected to be restored by the end of the day today. The majority of remaining customers in both the Northern and Central Regions are expected to be restored by Tuesday, August 11 at 11:30 p.m.

FirstEnergy continues to work closely with its utility companies and mutual assistance organizations to secure additional resources to assist with restoring all impacted customers.

Extra caution should be exercised in areas where downed wires may be tangled in downed tree branches or other debris.

To safeguard the health and safety of FirstEnergy employees, contractors and the public, please respect social distancing protocols as utility personnel work around the clock to restore all power outages caused by Tropical Storm Isaias.

«The AAOS believes that the setting where patients receive their care is best decided by physicians and thus, we support policies which give orthopaedic surgeons and their patients greater choice. While we are cautiously optimistic about CMS’ attempt to offer these flexibilities by promoting site neutrality and lifting restrictions on high-value physician-owned hospitals, we are concerned about the potential for unintended consequences associated with eliminating the Inpatient Only List.

«In pushing forward such a drastic change, CMS may exacerbate many of the same unresolved issues that our surgeons continue to face as a result of hip and knee arthroplasty being recently removed from the Inpatient Only List. Payers, including Medicare Advantage and commercial carriers often misinterpret the policy change to mean that these procedures must be performed exclusively in the outpatient setting. This confusion adds even more delay and paperwork to existing prior authorization requirements and, most importantly, jeopardizes patients’ safe, timely access to care.

«The AAOS believes that determining the appropriate setting of care should be done through the lens of patient safety and peer-reviewed evidence, and that physicians are best qualified for leading this individualized decision-making process with their patients. We strongly encourage CMS to carefully reassess this aspect of the proposal in light of these concerns, and we look forward to offering our formal comments on behalf of the musculoskeletal community.»
