As the third MissionPOCUS project since the initiative’s inception in 2018, Inteleos’ MissionPOCUS will award MSF a grant that will establish a pilot program between the two organizations to evaluate the possibility of integrating POCUS certification into MSF’s POCUS education and training processes. SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Working lands conservation by California’s largest land trust annually provides between $900 million to $1.44 billion in environmental benefits — including habitat, carbon sequestration, food and watersheds, according to a new study released today.  

The study, conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, examined 306,718 acres of California Rangeland Trust’s conservation easements across the state to explore both the environmental and monetary value of preserving California’s open spaces.

«This study demonstrates the importance of caring for and stewarding California’s land, so that it can serve our communities in return,» said California Rangeland Trust CEO Michael Delbar. «Conserving the state’s open spaces and rangelands isn’t just about ranching. It’s about investing in environmental services that will benefit Californians now and into the future.»

Employing a comprehensive literature review of ecosystem services and a global average of the monetary value of environmental services per acre, the study reports conservation easements—an agreement between a landowner and a qualified land trust regarding the future uses of private property—return up to $3.47 for every dollar invested under current zoning requirements, further emphasizing the long-term benefits of land conservation.

Since 1984, more than 1.4 million acres of land in California have been converted from agricultural to other uses—78 percent of which has been lost to urban development.

The study’s findings estimate that conservation efforts by California Rangeland Trust provide ecosystem services valued at more than $236 million in food and $13.9 million in water annually. Similarly, California Rangeland Trust’s conservation supports $250.6 million in the maintenance of biodiversity, nearly $100 million in habitat lifecycle production, and $28.5 million in recreation opportunities annually to the state.

Using conservation easements as a tool, the California Rangeland Trust seeks to balance against the demands of urban and land use planning and ensure local food, water and habitat security in communities across the state.

CIUDAD DE MEXICO, 4 de agosto de 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Europa trae entre sus principales políticas, la prohibición a la importación del aceite de palma que no provenga de cultivos sostenibles, argumentando el daño que los cultivos generan al medio ambiente. Indonesia y Malasia serían de los países más perjudicados por la medida debido a su liderazgo en la producción del aceite vegetal a nivel global. Sin embargo, la Dirección General de Políticas Exteriores del Parlamento Europeo (PE) advirtió, la reducción exclusiva de importaciones del aceite de palma planteada por la Unión Europea sería ambientalmente ineficaz y en su lugar, propone aplicar una moratoria sobre la deforestación para afrontar una lucha eficaz.

Por su parte, el Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos (USDA) estimó en mayo de 2020, la producción mundial del aceite de palma alcanzaría las 74.60 millones de toneladas en el periodo 2020/2021. En 2019 fue de 72.278 millones de toneladas. Indonesia y Malasia se encuentran a la cabeza con una producción de 43 millones 500 mil toneladas métricas y 19 millones 300 mil respectivamente. México se sitúa en la posición 18 dentro de los principales productores del mundo según el portal Producción Agrícola Mundial. Por su parte, la Federación Mexicana de Palma de Aceite (FEMEXPALMA) con datos del Sistema de Información Agroalimentaria y Pesquera (SIAP), informó, la producción local alcanzó las 238 mil 824 toneladas métricas anuales. A pesar de los esfuerzos de la industria, el aceite de palma ha recibido propaganda negativa por el impacto medioambiental de sus cultivos.

La Comisión de Comercio Internacional solicitó la opinión a la Dirección General de Políticas Exteriores del PE sobre el bloqueo al aceite de palma y como conclusión, se publicó un informe, en el que se sostiene, es menos costoso y más eficaz exigir una moratoria sobre deforestación a los principales productores de aceite de palma del mundo. La coyuntura por resolver es cómo lograr la motivación de naciones productoras en implementar políticas sostenibles sin imponer de forma unilateral y buscando la aceptación de los países productores. El comité también advierte, solo normas ambientales obligatorias y exigibles legalmente podrían detener la deforestación.

Fazlun Khalid, asesor de Naciones Unidas, afirma que un boicot a los productos implicados en la deforestación no es una respuesta de cara a contribuir en positivo al medio ambiente y eso quedó plasmado en el documento «Trade and biodiversity» publicado en junio de 2020 en el que la Unión Europea reconoce discretamente, su enfoque anterior para detener la deforestación como «poco probable que funcione«. Asimismo, la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (IUCS por sus siglas en inglés) ya advertía desde 2018 en el informe «Aceite de palma y biodiversidad«, la prohibición del aceite de palma incrementaría la producción de otros cultivos aceiteros a fin de satisfacer la demanda de consumidores y esto produciría más pérdidas de biodiversidad

Existen varios esquemas de certificación de sostenibilidad en los cultivos de la palma de aceite y el más conocido es la Mesa Redonda sobre Aceite de Palma Sostenible (RSPO por sus siglas en inglés). Es un esquema voluntario y útil a productores de todo el mundo para demostrar las mejores prácticas en el proceso de cultivo. Según el portal Euractiv, Malasia tiene un 63.2% de las plantaciones certificadas y en diciembre de 2019 se comprometió a lograr el 100% durante 2020, previo a los eventos por la pandemia de Covid-19.

Global Forest Watch del World Resources Institute publicó en julio de 2020 nuevos datos sobre cómo entre 2017 y 2020, la tasa de deforestación de Malasia se ha desacelerado, un desarrollo atribuido a los «esfuerzos locales para reducir la deforestación».

José Luis Pérez Vázquez Aldana, presidente ejecutivo de FEMEXPALMA explicó en entrevista a NotiPress, sobre el inicio de la puesta en marcha del esquema de certificación RSPO en México, «había un gran desconocimiento acerca de lo que es el esquema de la certificación RSPO y en cómo poderla ejecutar y llevarla a la práctica«. Durante el II Congreso Palmero Mexicano llevado a cabo en Campeche en marzo de 2020, se anunció la obtención de la certificación RSPO de dos planta procesadoras del aceite vegetal, una en Chiapas y la otra en Tabasco. Estas son las primeras que obtienen el reconocimiento sobre sostenibilidad en sus prácticas de producción del aceite de palma. El bloqueo europeo podría replicarse en otras latitudes, pero países como Colombia y recientemente Perú, mantienen un compromiso público para producir palma de aceite sostenible y libre de deforestación.
