Only 2.7% of board members at Fortune 1000 companies are Latino; DHR to influence increased board diversity in the U.S.

Today, Hispanics represent 18% of the U.S. population, yet only 2.7% of board members at Fortune 1000 companies are Latino, according to a report by KPMG and Latino Corporate Directors Association. At the same time, research from McKinsey & Company shows that diverse firms outperform their less-diverse competitors by up to 36% in profitability.

Critically Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale Succumbs To Entanglement Wounds

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — After over 4 months of suffering severe entanglement in heavy fishing gear, an 11-year old male North Atlantic right whale nicknamed Cottontail by researchers has died off the coast of South Carolina.

Since October, disentanglement attempts were made by both the Center for Coastal Studies and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Unsuccessful due largely to weather conditions, Cottontail’s chances of survival remained grim.   

«These whales must maneuver through an industrialized waterway dense with intense shipping traffic and an estimated one million commercial vertical fishing lines in the water column. This journey to their feeding grounds, which the species has taken for centuries, is becoming a journey of no return,» said Brian Sharp, IFAW’s Director of Marine Mammal Rescue & Research.

Once numbering in the tens of thousands, less than 356 of these whales are now estimated to survive today. Driven toward extinction by human causes including entanglement and vessel collisions, the population has a limited number of reproductive females, low birth rates, and only 16 calves born this calving season. One was already the victim of a fatal vessel strike just last month.

The fishing gear was wrapped tightly around Cottontail’s head, protruding from both sides of his mouth and dragging beyond his tail. Emaciated from being unable to feed properly and with severe resulting wounds, he joins a long and growing list of whales that have succumbed to their entanglements.

IFAW leads a campaign across the US and Canada to protect this once thriving species. The group advocates for key changes including the adoption of ropeless fishing gear technology to reduce  entanglement risk; passage of critical legislation including the SAVE Right Whales Act; and increasing maritime regulations that includes stricter vessel speed restrictions.

According to IFAW Marine Campaigner CT Harry, «Cottontail’s demise is a perfect illustration of what we are trying to stop. No species can survive these types of injuries day after day. We can attempt disentanglements and the like, but that does not solve the issue. We need collective action. We need 21st century technology to remove the threat of entanglement. We need an unwavering commitment to turn this situation around.»

Among key applications for these value-added materials are high-end frozen food brands emphasizing healthfulness and environmental responsibility (which often go hand-in-hand in the clean-label market).   • In March 2020, Sonoco Products introduced a 100% sugarcane-based fiber bowl for refrigerated, frozen, and prepared foods. The bowl is sold under the Natrellis brand and was developed through a partnership with packaging company Tellus. Natrellis bowls will be used as the primary packaging for PRIMAL KITCHEN frozen bowl and skillet meals.

A keynote address from Paola Deda, the Director of the Forest, Land and Housing Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), drew attention to the underrepresentation of women in forestry but offered an optimistic longer-term outlook and cited a recent Swedish study of forest ownership.

«These women see forests for what they are — not a bunch of trees that can be taken down and used to generate profit, but as part of a larger ecosystem that is worth much more to us and future generations when it thrives,» Deda said.

The importance of leadership and networking was front and center in an interactive interview with Lynn Wilson, President of WinterTide LLC, a supply chain and forest sector consulting firm, on mentor-mentee relationships. Her theme, «The power of building relationships, networking and influencing outcomes,» focused on several questions, including: What can we learn from each other? How do we move in multiple directions?

Together, Poland Spring and The Ecology School are providing students with top-of-the-line, virtually accessible resources, offering a new educational institution to train ecology education leaders nationwide and developing a sustainable learning facility in the Northeast.

The Ecology School is scaling their mission of inspiring stewardship of and connection to the natural world through nature-based lessons about ecology, conservation, farming and sustainability. When it comes to hands-on learning, COVID-19 has created additional challenges. Health precautions have forced many students to turn to online learning, limiting outdoor activities and opportunities. According to a recent survey by The Harris Poll, 73% of parents are concerned their child or children are losing knowledge due to virtual learning, and 69% of parents are concerned their child or children aren’t getting enough exercise or time outside during the pandemic. To help ensure that students are able to advance their learning in healthy and productive ways, The Ecology School’s new, virtual learning resources aim to get children and families outside to engage with nature and the environment.

As a proactive means to address the increasing learning gap for children, Poland Spring brand and The Ecology School are providing three new online and in-person approaches for teaching and learning about ecology.

EcologyOnline. The new online e-learning platform, EcologyOnline sponsored by Poland Spring, provides five learning modules as a curriculum designed by experts at The Ecology School and its educatiosnal partners. Each module contains an educational skit, at least three outdoor-focused activities, and action steps for real world application. Unlike most e-learning programs, EcologyOnline invites students to get out from behind the computer and take their learning outdoors, no matter their learning environment. The curriculum’s online deployment paired with outside activities is focused on inclusivity across rural, urban and suburban areas. EcologyOnline is now available through EcologyOnline.org.

The Teacher Institute for Watershed Science and Conservation, sponsored by Poland Spring, has been created for the sole purpose of recruiting and training more environmental stewards and educators. Starting in August 2021, the institute will welcome K-8 teachers from across the country to The Ecology School’s River Bend Farm campus in Maine for a four-day, hands-on educational program. Poland Spring is collaborating with The Ecology School to help ensure the program is available to teachers from communities where NWNA operates. Through a variety of outdoor-focused learning sessions, teachers will learn more about how to adopt more sustainable practices and how to inspire the next generation to participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Over the course of three years, the program projects to enroll over 280 teachers in the institute. A key component of the program is its ability to provide financial aid to ensure that more teachers are able to join. Additionally, the Teacher Institute for Watershed Science and Conservation will provide teachers with 15 hours towards Continuing Education Units through the University of Southern Maine, an accredited university. The Poland Spring® Education and Dining Commons, named one of the most sustainable buildings in the Northeast was constructed to help create a campus that models conservation-in-action with 200 rooftop solar panels, kitchen equipment that is 20% more efficient, LED lighting, skylights and composite wooden beams instead of steel. The 7,000 square-foot building features one of the few large-scale combustion-less, net-positive commercial production kitchens worldwide. The facility also uses sustainable processes like composting, water reclamation and waste reduction. Additionally, The Ecology School anticipates growing 100% of the produce served at meals through its onsite agroecology farm by 2025. The building also uses local Maine products such as Forest Stewardship Council certified Maine white pine boards. Poland Spring and The Ecology School will continue to work together to help ensure the Poland Spring Education and Dining Commons continues to set a standard in sustainable facilities.

SAN DIEGO, Mar. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Today, Rhombus Energy Solutions is announcing the certification of its bi-directional 125 kilowatt (kW) DC fast charger to the Underwriter Laboratories 1741-SA standard. This latest certification now provides medium and heavy duty (M/HD) EV fleet operators with two Rhombus products to meet their needs – the Rhombus 125kW charger and the previously-certified Rhombus 60kW charger. Since both of these chargers and their associated dispensers are bi-directional certified, they can now be utilized in both Vehicle to Everything (V2X) and unidirectional charging use cases by M/HD EV fleet operators.

UL 1741-SA is UL’s Standard for Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for Use With Distributed Energy Resources. This standard defines the design and testing requirements to certify that bi-directional, grid tied, «smart» inverters and electric vehicle (EV) chargers can be safely used to support the distributed generation (DG) grid services and applications. Utilities in the United States and worldwide are increasingly interested in opportunities to cost effectively add energy storage to support increasing levels of intermittent renewable energy sources. This certification builds on Rhombus’ existing UL 1741-SA certification of the Rhombus 60kW high-power charger PCS, as well as the certification of the Company’s EV charging dispensers to UL 2202, 2231, and CSA C22.2 standards.
