NEW YORK, Feb. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — PKF O’Connor Davies, LLP, one of the nation’s largest accounting, tax, and advisory firms, announced the results of its Long Island Economic Survey & Opinion Poll at a webinar hosted by the Firm on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. The survey of Long Island business owners found that a majority of businesses on Long Island maintained staff levels and increased employee compensation last year, despite wavering confidence in the economy brought on by COVID-19, political uncertainty, and other factors. Since 1995, the survey has been conducted by the certified public accounting firm AVZ, which joined PKF O’Connor Davies earlier this year.

«After a truly challenging and unique year, this survey once again offers a valuable snapshot into the perceptions and expectations of Long Island employers,» said Kevin J. Keane, Managing Partner at PKF O’Connor Davies. «At a high level, we found that organizations of all shapes and sizes understandably felt a bit more uncertain about the future of their business, but most still found ways to retain their people and even increase compensation. This survey will provide our team and the Long Island business community with meaningful insights as we continue to help our clients navigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.»

The survey covered a broad range of topics centered on economic confidence, revenue, prices and profits, employment outlook, annual raises, growth industries, economic indicators, retirement, real estate, current events, and additional fun questions. Key survey findings include:

  • Confidence in the Long Island economy dipped to 6.5 (down from 6.8)
  • 61% of businesses experienced no change in headcount in 2020
  • 89% of businesses gave their employees raises
  • 73% of respondents believe real estate prices will continue to increase
  • 58% of businesses received funds from the Payroll Protection Program
  • Binge watching shows was the leisure activity people did most often while quarantining

«From mom and pop storefronts to international organizations, the Long Island business community is diverse, and understanding how business owners here are seeing and thinking about the future offers tremendously valuable insights,» said Jeffrey Davoli, Partner at PKF O’Connor Davies. «This is the 27th survey our team at AVZ has conducted, and every year I’m impressed and inspired by the findings we glean from the Long Island business community. I’m thrilled to collaborate on those results with the PKF O’Connor Davies team and use them to enhance the work we do for our clients on the Island and beyond.»

The Long Island Economic Survey & Opinion Poll surveyed businesses with operations throughout Long Island and in diverse industries. More than half of the companies surveyed have been in business more than 30 years, and half had more than 25 employees.

PKF O’Connor Davies has 14 offices in six states and continues to expand through organic growth and acquisitions on the East Coast. It has supported this growth with a strategic combination of promoting from within coupled with tactical external hires.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The National Small Business Association (NSBA) has unveiled its Top Priorities for the 117th Congress, a result of its biennial Small Business Congress, held virtually over the past three weeks.  Small businesses selected access to capital, a strong small-business role in the federal marketplace and reining-in the cost of health care their top priorities for Congress and the administration to address in the coming two years.

«The emphasis on capital is no surprise given the very challenging state of small business today,» stated Todd McCracken NSBA president and CEO. «What is a little surprising is how high on this list political reform is. Ultimately, pragmatic small-business owners know that our priorities rest on the shoulders of a functional political system—a system that has been shamefully deteriorating over the past several months and years.»

NSBA’s Top Priorities for the 117th Congress are:

  1. Bolster SBA Lending
  2. Support Robust Small Business Contracting
  3. Improve Access to Credit
  4. Rein in the Costs of Health Care
  5. Enact Tax Reform That Prioritizes Simplification
  6. Close the Partisan Divide and Reform Politics
  7. Improve Workforce Training
  8. Regulatory Reform and Paperwork Reduction
  9. Strengthen Federal Innovation Programs
  10. Oppose Counter-Productive Minimum Wage Increases
  11. Support Fair and Simple Capital Gains Taxes

«Despite a year fraught with unforeseen hardships, the resilience and dedication of NSBA’s leaders and membership was on full display as we spent many hours over the last three weeks to craft this agenda,» stated NSBA Chair ML Mackey, CEO and Co-Founder of Beacon Interactive Systems in Waltham, Mass. «We come from different backgrounds and different political ideologies and I am proud to lead a group that made the choice to set aside the all-too-common ‘us or them’ mentality to become we. This is the agenda that WE set.»

FAIR: Mass Illegal Alien Amnesty Meets Einstein’s Definition of Insanity

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Albert Einstein supposedly said that «Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.» By that definition, President Joe Biden’s approach to solving America’s long-standing problem of illegal immigration—granting amnesty to some 14.5 million illegal aliens—qualifies as insanity on the grandest possible scale.

<div class="PRN_ImbeddedAssetReference"…

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Albert Einstein supposedly said that «Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.» By that definition, President Joe Biden’s approach to solving America’s long-standing problem of illegal immigration—granting amnesty to some 14.5 million illegal aliens—qualifies as insanity on the grandest possible scale.

As we approach yet another legislative effort to grant amnesty to every illegal alien who was present in the country prior to January 1, 2021 (and allow countless more who were deported during the Trump administration to return), the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) has summarized the nation’s history of attempting to fix immigration by pardoning those who break our immigration laws. The report, America Last: How the Biden Mass-Amnesty is Worse than Every Other Amnesty Attempt in U.S. History, demonstrates that past amnesties—legislated and de facto—not only failed to solve the problem but actually triggered even larger waves of illegal immigration.

The report takes a hard look at the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), the Reagan-era amnesty that was supposed to put an end to the problem of illegal immigration:

  • At the time President Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) in 1986, an estimated 3 million illegal aliens resided in the United States; 35 years later that number is nearly five times higher.
  • IRCA was riddled with fraud, so an amnesty five times larger would inevitably result in fraud on an even grander scale.
  • Countless promises to the American public to prevent future illegal immigration were never kept. The Biden proposal (unlike amnesty proposals made under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama) does not even promise future enforcement.

In addition to detailing the past failures of amnesty programs, the report also delves into the future costs that the Biden amnesty would impose on American workers and taxpayers. Some 40 million new immigrants are expected to eventually enter the country through chain migration stemming from this amnesty.

The report further examines how legislative efforts—even failed ones like the DREAM Act and the 2013 Gang of Eight bill and de facto amnesties like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)—have exacerbated illegal immigration and put us in the position we are in today, with some 14.5 million illegal aliens living here.

«You don’t need to be Albert Einstein to figure out that the massive amnesty the Biden administration is proposing will not produce any results other than those we have seen with past amnesties—only exponentially larger and infinitely more damaging to the national interest,» commented Dan Stein, president of FAIR. «Nor do you need to be George Santayana to know that, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’

«The events of the past 35 years, documented in this report, make it evident that the amnesty plan put forth by the White House falls squarely within Einstein’s definition of insanity and Santayana’s definition of self-destructive denial of history,» Stein concluded.

The full report, America Last: How the Biden Mass-Amnesty is Worse than Every Other Amnesty Attempt in U.S. History, can found here.

DALLAS, Feb. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Comerica Bank’s Michigan Economic Activity Index increased in December to a level of 108.6. December’s reading was 25 percent higher than the historical low reached in June 2020. The index averaged 104.6 points for all of 2020, 13.2 points below the index average for 2019. November’s index reading was revised to 106.4.

Our Michigan economic activity index increased for the sixth consecutive month in December, showing the strongest monthly gain since September. Six out of nine sub-indexes were positive in December. They were nonfarm unemployment insurance claims (inverted), housing starts, house prices, industrial electricity demand, light vehicle production and state sales tax revenues. The three decliners were nonfarm payrolls, total state trade and hotel occupancy. There are three key factors that are causing us to temper our optimism about the headline gain in many states this month. First, is that we use a three-month moving average to smooth out the volatility that typically comes with regional economic data. So, this may underweight any drag from tighter social mitigation policy at year-end. Related to social policy, we are seeing a bifurcation between manufacturing-related economic data, which is generally strengthening, and services-related economic data, which may not be strengthening, at the regional, U.S. and international levels. So, a positive headline reading for any state this winter does not necessarily mean that conditions are improving for all industries in that state. Finally, timing issues around the year-end fiscal stimulus package may have artificially improved some data related to unemployment insurance claims. We also expect to see drag on Michigan’s auto industry in February as the global computer chip shortage restricts production.

The Michigan Economic Activity Index consists of nine variables, as follows: nonfarm payroll employment, continuing claims for unemployment insurance, housing starts, house price index, industrial electricity sales, auto assemblies, total trade, hotel occupancy and sales tax revenue. All data are seasonally adjusted. Nominal values have been converted to constant dollar values. Index levels are expressed in terms of three-month moving averages.

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The United Steelworkers (USW) today praised President Joe Biden’s anticipated executive order to institute 100-day reviews of four critical industrial supply chains, a step meant to avoid shortages of crucial goods.

«President Biden recognizes that American manufacturing is a critical part of our nation’s safety and security,» said USW International President Tom Conway. «If the COVID-19 pandemic taught us anything, it’s that when we are forced to rely on other nations to supply our day-to-day needs, we put American lives on the line.»

Biden’s order will focus on pharmaceuticals, computer chips, large-capacity batteries, and rare minerals used in high-tech applications.

«These are essential pieces of our economy, but this is simply one step in what must be a sustained effort to restore our nation’s manufacturing capacity across all industries,» Conway said. «That effort must include large-scale investments in updating our infrastructure, along with a commitment to ensuring that these investments create long-term, good-paying jobs that can support families.

«While these four areas of focus are an important start, a similar effort will be necessary to strengthen our infrastructure supply chain when that work begins,» he said.

The shortages of household supplies, medical equipment and personal protective equipment that Americans saw during the first several months of the pandemic demonstrated the urgent need to revitalize U.S. manufacturing, Conway said.

«American workers are more than capable of meeting our nation’s needs if we make sure they have the tools they need to do so,» Conway said. «We have to learn from the lessons that 2020 taught us and do everything we can to make sure it never happens again.»

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
