IBM Helps Audi UK Reimagine the Digital Customer Experience

Online sales inquiries increase 59%; car buying experience puts prospective customers in the driver’s seat

ARMONK, N.Y. and LONDON, Jan. 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — IBM [NYSE: IBM] and Audi UK, one of the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturers, collaborated to redesign Audi’s website to deliver a far more engaging digital customer experience. During the course of 2020, Audi has seen a 59% increase in UK online sales inquiries despite an almost 30% industry decline in new UK car sales during the pandemic.

With 90% of its car purchases starting online, Audi UK turned to IBM iX, the business design arm of IBM Global Business Services, to help it reimagine its customers’ digital journey from initial inquiry to ownership. COVID-19 has made «contact-less» online experience paramount as car dealerships had to close or limit in-person operations.

Audi UK’s digital transformation unified its mobile and desktop shopping experiences, enabled by a cloud platform and supported by the latest marketing insights data from Adobe Analytics and agile software development practices.

Audi UK tailors the customers’ online experience to their prime motivations for car-buying – be it price, driving experience, technology or safety. Visitors are now asked fewer questions, can reach relevant information more quickly and are offered more contact options to take their inquiry further than they could before.  Audi UK broke its own online sales inquiries record three times in June 2020 alone.

Antony Roberts, Head of Digital at Audi UK, says: «In a matter of 12 months, our leads have grown exponentially and our sales conversions have improved. We have gone from being poor in terms of the data analytics to being incredibly rich. Through our collaboration with IBM, Audi UK now has the most effective cloud-based online platform across the entire VW Group, building a smarter experience for customers interacting with our brand.»

Like most organizations, Audi’s IT architecture was built over many years and had become challenging to maintain. Applying the agile, user-focused IBM Garage Methodology, the Audi and IBM iX team co-created a strategic roadmap for their digital transformation, resulting in new customer-centric tools designed to enhance the user experience. IBM implemented Adobe Experience Manager along with Adobe Analytics to facilitate faster content-led experiences on their website that helped enable Audi to make business and customer-experience decisions based on data rather than assumptions, with a full view into how consumers interact with the new site:

  • IBM built the Audi analytics platform using Adobe Analytics which has helped provide actionable marketing insights, and pinpoints site performance improvement opportunities, resulting in Audi reducing customer submission errors by 90%.
  • Audi content editors are now able to complete everyday changes themselves, freeing developers to focus on more complex tasks. Audi has created libraries of reusable components that has reduced initial setup time of new features from weeks to minutes.
  • Adopting more agile practices, developers are now able to deliver functionality up to 75% faster than before; new solutions built this year include a test-drive booking application, a vehicle maintenance scheduler and a part-exchange calculator.

Debbie Vavangas, IBM Global Garage lead, IBM iX, said: «Audi has prided itself on its commitment to apply smart design across its business. With the COVID-19 pandemic up-ending the way consumers make large purchases, there was a critical need to apply its design principles to its customers’ digital experiences. By embracing cloud technologies and data analytics, Audi UK helped accelerate its digital transformation with an online platform that delivers a smarter, more engaging experience that puts customers in the driver’s seat.»

Notes to editors

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announces, in its UK January 2021 report, a 29% fall in new car registrations in 2020: https://www.smmt.co.uk/2021/01/uk-automotive-looks-to-green-recovery-strategy-after-29-4-fall-in-new-car-registrations-in-2020/

The 59% increase quoted above represents the growth in fully qualified sales inquiries generated on www.audi.co.uk during 2020 over the previous year, which were passed to Audi sales or its business partners.

NAGOYA, Japan, Jan. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Tajima Industries Co., Ltd. (based in Nagoya, Japan), a leading embroidery machine manufacturer striving for automation of embroidery, production network management, and promotion of smart embroidery businesses, is proud to announce the launch of new embroidery machines on January 22, 2021, as the brand-new «TMEZ-KC Series» models, equipped with the «i-TM» function for automating the embroidery finish.

While society has been going through great technological progressions like digitization in recent years, the apparel-manufacturing industry has come to face emerging issues associated with the labor shortage caused by the global COVID-19 outbreak. In such circumstances, the company is centering its corporate focus around automation of the machine embroidery production process by equipping machines with its proprietary AI technology «i-TM,» designed to automate the embroidery finish, as a solution to the manufacturing labor shortage.

TMEZ-K1506C: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/prwfile/release/M106387/202012028045/_prw_PI4fl_7M3G2Hxq.jpg

1. Tajima’s Original AI Technology «i-TM»

«i-TM» stands for «Intelligent Thread Management.» In machine embroidery, patterns may be stitched in all different directions and the stitch length may vary even in a single design, making machine embroidery one of the most difficult types of sewing. The company has successfully algorithmized the embroidery finish patterns acquired through many years of experience to produce «i-TM.» This AI technology analyzes the stitch-by-stitch sewing direction and fabric thickness to compute the appropriate amount of upper thread feed for the next stitch and makes proper adjustments to stitches so that the embroidery finish that is considered to be «good» can be achieved in a stable manner.

i-TM: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/prwfile/release/M106387/202012028045/_prw_PI5fl_20ZG9dVG.jpg

2. Advantages of «i-TM» at Machine Embroidery Factories

– Shorter Test Sewing Time

While most operators using conventional embroidery machines perform sewing tests to adjust the thread tension prior to actual production, i-TM-installed machines require much less time for test sewing in the preparatory process, allowing operators to use the time saved for production activities. The i-TM models are especially suitable for embroidering on ready-made products with mixed levels of fabric thickness and elasticity, such as caps, T-shirts, patches, shoes and socks.

Comparison of Production Processes between Conventional and i-TM Models: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/prwfile/release/M106387/202012028045/_prw_PI3fl_vk035bN0.jpg

– Reduced Manufacturing Defects and Losses

The most frequent losses observed at machine embroidery factories are the products that fail in the quality inspection due to an insufficient embroidery finish. The i-TM models automatically adjust the embroidery finish to achieve good results in a stable manner, thus contributing to reduction of manufacturing losses.

– New Operators Readily Set to Work

Operators with experience-based skills play a crucial role in the conventional practice of upper thread tension adjustment to varying thread types. With «i-TM,» on the other hand, operators’ tasks are eased as the thread tension does not need to be adjusted manually, saving managers the time for training operators.

– Beautiful Finish with Various Thread Types

«i-TM» incorporates the stitching techniques that Tajima has accumulated over decades and produces a beautiful embroidery finish by tightening the thread firmly for linear running stitches while providing soft sewing for zig-zag satin stitches.

Brigade Electronics launches new vehicle turning indicator alarm to alert vulnerable road users

PORTLAND, Ind., Jan. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Market-leading provider of vehicle safety systems Brigade Electronics has launched a new indicator warning alarm to alert vulnerable road users when a vehicle is turning.

Brigade Electronics launches new vehicle turning indicator alarm to alert vulnerable road users

The bbs-TI, which is installed on the nearside of the vehicle, will synchronize an audible warning alarm with the indicator lights when activated, alerting vulnerable road users to a vehicle’s intention to turn.

The new vehicle safety system will harness Brigade’s existing White Sound® broadband technology, which will enable vulnerable road users to instantly locate which direction the sound is coming from. Gentler on the ear compared to traditional tonal alarms, White Sound® dissipates quickly and can only be heard in the danger zone, helping to reduce unnecessary noise disturbances.

For vehicles operating in multiple countries, White Sound® alarms have the additional benefit of being universally recognizable, meaning language barriers caused by traditional speaking alarms are eliminated.

bbs-TI’s features include:

  • Visual and audible vehicle turning warning to alert vulnerable road users
  • Suitable for use in multiple countries – no language barrier
  • Optional muting of the alarm for night-time hours
  • Option to activate the alarm below a designated speed only
  • Synchronizes bbs White Sound® technology with the vehicle’s indicator flash
  • Suitable for left turn or right turn installations
  • Complies with regulations and legislations that require an ‘audible vehicle maneuvering warning for vulnerable road users’ when a vehicle is turning

Corey Heniser, a road safety specialist at Brigade Electronics INC, said:

«One of the leading causes of collisions between vehicles and other road users is when a vehicle is turning. Much has been developed to improve driver awareness of pedestrians and cyclists in the vehicle’s nearside blind spot, but this doesn’t always help vulnerable road users – especially if they are traveling at speed and go unnoticed by the driver. The bbs-TI, which is compatible with Brigade’s side camera monitoring systems and sidescan ultrasonics, will help to protect vulnerable road users and make fleets even safer.»

IONIQ 5’s signature design elements include Parametric Pixels, the smallest unit of digital imaging, as well as its eco-friendly Color Material Finish (CMF) direction that connects the analogue with digital emotions, showcasing the IONIQ brand’s timeless design value.

IONIQ 5’s front end is adorned with arrays of pixel-inspired lights suggestive of the digital technology within. IONIQ 5 is also the first Hyundai vehicle to feature a clamshell hood that spans the entire width of the car, thus minimizing panel gaps and creating a clean and high-tech overall look.

Aero-optimized wheels further echo the Parametric Pixel design theme, offered in a super-sized 20-inch diameter, the largest rims ever fitted to a Hyundai EV. These complete IONIQ 5’s perfected proportions, optimized for Hyundai’s new signature dedicated EV architecture.

«IONIQ 5 presents an all-new customer experience through innovative EV design that is evocative of the icon that established Hyundai’s design DNA,» said SangYup Lee, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center. «Beginning with IONIQ 5, our dedicated BEV lineup brand will redefine the relationship between people and their cars, establishing a new standard against which all BEV design experiences will be measured.»

Hyundai Motor has also released four teaser videos to spark curiosity about the new model, each presenting viewers with a sneak peek at IONIQ 5’s core technologies, raising expectations for the company’s dedicated BEV lineup brand and its first entry.

Three ‘Ultimate Camping’ videos show a camper using various electrical appliances powered by IONIQ 5’s Vehicle to Load (V2L) technology that functions as a general power supply (110/220V). In each video, the camper is seen using IONIQ 5’s 3.5KW of V2L-supplied power to roast a turkey in a large oven, listen to music on high-end audio speakers, and exercise on a treadmill—all at a camping site.

The ‘5 Min Challenge’ video highlights IONIQ 5’s ultra-fast charging capability that enables it to drive more than 100km with only a 5-minute charge (WLTP Standard). To showcase this extraordinary performance, a movie trailer-style challenge was set up featuring IONIQ 5 and three devices—a smartphone, laptop and action camera—that were each charged for 5 minutes and competed to be the last to survive.

Beginning with these videos, Hyundai Motor plans to release even more engaging content that highlights the enhanced lifestyle that new IONIQ 5 customers will experience.

IONIQ 5 will debut on a virtual world premiere event in February 2021.

NAGOYA, Japan, Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Tajima Industries Co., Ltd.
