The annual report reveals automotive-related cyber threat trends and analysis in light of recently drafted and adopted cybersecurity standards and regulations as well as the COVID-19 pandemic; the report also includes a one-of-a-kind analysis of automotive cyber threats identified throughout the deep and dark web.

HERZLIYA, Israel, Dec. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Upstream Security, a leading provider of cloud-based automotive cybersecurity solutions, today released its 2021 Global Automotive Cybersecurity Report. The annual report shares in-depth insights and analysis derived by analyzing 633 publicly reported automotive cyber incidents spanning the last decade, highlighting vulnerabilities and threats identified during 2020.

For the first-time-ever, the annual report offers an in-depth mapping of all 2020 automotive cyber incidents to the threats listed in the UNECE WP.29 regulation as well as an analysis of the risk levels of specific incidents as required by the ISO/SAE 21434 regulation. The report also includes an inaugural segment focused on non-disclosed automotive-related cyber incidents discovered throughout the deep and dark web.

2020 has been a year of disruption in the automotive industry, both because of COVID-19 and the new automotive cybersecurity standards and regulations. The rising number of connected vehicles increases the entry points and vulnerabilities that hackers can leverage, and the ever-growing automotive cyber threat landscape continues to develop.

«With the continued rise of cyber attacks against the automotive industry and the regulatory requirements that were developed in response, now more than ever, automotive stakeholders must take heed of the cyber threat landscape,» said Oded Yarkoni, Upstream Security’s VP of Marketing. «Knowing and assessing automotive cyber threats both on the surface and on the deep and dark web is the first step in developing an effective cybersecurity management system and complying with the cybersecurity demands of both regulators and consumers.»

Upstream’s 2021 Global Automotive Cybersecurity Report introduces key findings of the Upstream AutoThreat Intelligence research team as well as cybersecurity recommendations for automotive stakeholders:

  • Connected vehicles are here to stay: The rising number of connected vehicles leads to increased vulnerabilities and entry points for hackers to leverage; more than 200 automotive cyber incidents were publicly reported in 2020 alone.
  • Most automotive cyber hacks were carried out by hackers with malicious intent: In 2020, 54.6% of hacks were carried out by black-hat hackers to disrupt business, steal property, and demand ransom. 39.1% of hacks were committed by white-hat hackers and researchers, including those as part of an automotive bug-bounty program.
  • There was a growth of servers targeted in 2020: The three most common attack vectors over the last decade were servers, keyless entry systems, and mobile apps, with a 73% growth in server attacks in 2020. All three top attack vectors are attacked remotely, and as seen in 2020, 77.8% of all incidents were remote attacks.
  • The number of automotive-related CVEs is growing: To date, there have been 110 CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) related to the automotive industry, 33 in 2020 compared to 24 in 2019.
  • Theft of data and vehicles were among the top impacts of cyber attacks in 2020: 36% of incidents in 2020 involved data and privacy breaches, and 28% of incidents involved thefts or break-ins.
  • Standards and regulations indicate an industry-wide recognition of cyber threats: When mapping cyber incidents from 2020 to threats indicated by the UNECE WP.29 regulation, 89.9% of incidents related to threats to vehicles regarding their communication channels and 86.7% related to threats to vehicle data/code, the top two threat categories.
  • While COVID-19 slowed down many automotive operations, cyber attacks were on the rise: OEMs and automotive suppliers were prime targets during the pandemic, with a cyber attack even shutting down a major OEM. The pandemic also led to factory closures, assembly-line shutdowns, supply chain interruptions, and even some OEMs pivoting their activities altogether.
  • The deep and dark web contains a noticeable amount of automotive-related hacks and threats: The most frequent and significant automotive hacks discussed on the deep and dark web include ECU tuning, infotainment hacking, selling stolen identities to access OEM and smart-mobility accounts, and leaking automotive source code or data.
  • Automotive cybersecurity has been recognized as vital: The automotive cybersecurity market is expected to grow over the next decade, with OEMs recognizing that security-by-design, automotive cyber threat intelligence, and a well-established VSOC (vehicle SOC) with an integrated cybersecurity solution is integral to the safety and security of their vehicles and assets.

TEL AVIV, Israel, Dec. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Vayyar, the global leader in 4D imaging radar technology, is transforming automotive safety with its production-ready Radar-on-Chip (RoC) platform, which enables OEMs to achieve leading-edge vehicle safety while achieving unprecedented cost efficiencies.

Vayyar's imaging radar-on-chip supports life-saving in and out-of-cabin applications – replacing multiple sensors

Vayyar’s automotive-grade, AEC-Q100 qualified RoC is a game-changing solution. The chip features up to 48 transceivers, an internal digital signal processor (DSP) and microcontroller unit (MCU) for real-time signal processing. Capable of seeing through objects and able to operate effectively in all weather conditions, Vayyar’s single-chip solution can replace over a dozen other sensors and negates the need for expensive LIDAR and cameras.

Within the cabin, one multifunctional Vayyar chip can support a multitude of systems, including intruder alerts, Child Presence Detection, enhanced Seat Belt Reminders and eCall to alert emergency services in the event of a crash. It delivers a revolutionary level of safety, utterly unobtainable with traditional single-function sensors.

This breakthrough solution fulfils the functions of multiple chips by sensing, computing, processing, mapping and imaging targets with just a single radio-frequency integrated circuit (RFIC). The platform supports Vayyar’s mission to ensure that safety is available and affordable for all car manufacturers and their key suppliers, at a time when modern cars are becoming increasingly crowded with sensors.

Today, there are more than 100 sensors in a typical car, with analysts predicting that this will double by 2030. However, Vayyar’s new production-ready RoC offers unprecedented potential and a unique opportunity to cut cost and complexity while improving safety.

«By replacing multiple sensors with our multifunctional, scalable platform, the possibilities for simplicity and savings are substantial. In addition, regulations and standards are rising and to achieve 5-star ratings, automakers are moving away from traditional solutions,» explains Ian Podkamien, Head of Automotive at Vayyar. «Our multi-award winning technology, recognised by organisations such as CLEPA, equips vehicles with the instincts to save lives, providing uncompromising and affordable safety. What’s more, its price point is similar to a single-function 3×4 2D/3D radar solution, but with substantial added value.»

The platform provides exceptionally high resolution and an extremely wide field of view to deliver unsurpassed precision and detail. The robust sensor is also engineered for scalability, seamlessly facilitating the deployment of emerging features via over-the-air (OTA) software updates. This effectively future-proofs vehicles as new safety requirements and standards emerge.

Central to the platform’s potential is its ability to reduce complexity, in order to cut direct and indirect costs. Vayyar has the in-house expertise to deliver a full end-to-end solution, including hardware, software, development and testing resources, streamlining the integration process for Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs to minimise effort, costs and risk.

By providing a high-performance, cost-effective and multifunctional sensor, Vayyar’s technology closes the gap between rising safety demands and feasible tech adoption, ensuring that affordable, uncompromising safety is available to all.

Further information on Vayyar’s cutting-edge 4D imaging ROC technology is available at www.vayyar.com/auto.

Ride hailing trips fall by 59% in 1H 2020; new vehicle sales expected to drop by 26% in 2020

LONDON, Dec. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — COVID-19 and the resultant measures taken by government across the world to contain the spread of the virus have collapsed the demand for personal transit, with all mobility modes at the consumer’s disposal contracting significantly in the first half of 2020. Following robust growth of 14% in 2019, the ridehailing market has faced its first significant disruption this year, with strict controls on personal mobility, combined with a growing concern over shared spaces resulting in a contraction of over 59% in 1H 2020, finds global tech market advisory firm, ABI Research.

ABI Research www.abiresearch.com

«While it might have been expected that growing consumer concerns around shared spaces would push them back into privately owned cars, this has done little to offset the collapse in new vehicle sales. With the near-total disruption of the bricks and mortar retail channel for new vehicles further compounded by a worsening macroeconomic situation it’s a bleak outlook going into 2021,» says James Hodgson, Principal Analyst at ABI Research

Meanwhile the ridehailing market has effectively come to a standstill, with numerous platforms competing for a larger share of an imploding market. After a brief conceding ground to local competitors, Uber has begun to consolidate its position global position, retaining a market share of around 70% in the US and Western Europe, and over 85% in MEA, made possible by the 2019 Careem acquisition. Similarly, Didi and Grab have maintained commanding market position in their key markets, with Didi having well over 90% of the Chinese market, and Grab holding 63.5% of the Indonesian market, and almost 75% percent of the Vietnamese market.

Nevertheless, despite their dominance of the ridehailing markets in key regions, all these platforms have had to pivot aggressively towards non-ridehailing use-cases, with food and grocery delivery providing some much-needed revenue. Didi launched delivery services in 21 Chinese cities, while Uber reinforced their existing food delivery services via the acquisition of Postmates in July 2020. Food delivery services now account for over half of Grab’s 2020 revenues, with Grab also expanding their GrabMart grocery delivery service from 2 countries to 8 of the countries in which they operate.

This pivot toward delivery services has helped ride hailing platforms maintain driver engagement with their mobility platforms. «In the longer term, ride hailing platforms must accommodate consumer and regulator concerns over the integrity of shared public spaces in order to return the core ride hailing use-case to growth,» Hodgson advises.

Alongside the usual host of measures in the «physical» domain, such as distributing hand sanitizer, mandating masks, and protective screens, ride hailing platforms also have considerable «digital levers» at their command. For example, Uber has introduced a requirement for riders to send a selfie to prove that they are wearing a mask before their trip request is accepted. More fundamentally, ride hailing platforms can deliver robust contact tracing, combining their digitized dispatch with their biometrics-based driver ID to systematically record all contact between their drivers and riders.

EAVC is an artificial intelligence-based technology that optimizes vehicle environment based on information from both inside and outside the vehicle. Hyundai Motor Group is leading the development of this next-generation technology, as part of an academic research collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab.

EAVC technology monitors facial expressions, heart rate and respiratory rate, and combines these readings with input from the vehicle including speed, acceleration, noise and vibration. The technology then processes the data utilizing machine learning to optimize the vehicle environment and actively controls vehicle systems such as lighting, climate, music and fragrance dispenser.

EVAC is at the heart of Hyundai’s ‘Little Big e-Motion’ project. Equipped with this technology, the mini EV – designed by the same team that oversaw the ’45’ concept – will be used to support the treatment of young patients at hospitals. Hyundai donated this one-of-a-kind EV to SJD hospital in Barcelona where it will be used to support the mobility of young patients from hospital bed to treatment room, which is considered one of the most stressful trips for the children.

The EAVC-equipped mini EV interacts with its young ‘driver’ through five key technologies: Facial Emotion Recognition System, Breathing Exercise Belt, Heart Rate Monitoring Sensor, Emotion Adaptive Lighting, and Emotion Adaptive Scent Dispenser.

In addition to providing emotional support for the young patients, EAVC also assists the work of the medical staff at the hospital by informing them about the emotional state of the young patients without in-person interactions, which is especially useful in the era of COVID-19.

The company hopes to expand the use of this next-generation technology in mobility devices in the future to enhance driver safety and well-being.

STOCKHOLM, Dec. 14, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The automotive technology company Veoneer, Inc. (NYSE: VNE) and (SSE: VNE SDB), has commenced production of its 4th generation thermal sensing system, called Night Vision. Debuting on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, the Night Vision system enhances forward visibility by using a wider field-of-view thermal camera with four times greater resolution compared to the previous generation, to extend road coverage, improve detection capability, and display a sharper image to the driver.

Veoneer’s thermal camera is integrated into the front grille of the Cadillac Escalade and the thermal image is displayed in front of the driver on Cadillac’s new 38-inch curved OLED screen.  Veoneer’s system senses very small temperature variances to differentiate objects from their surroundings at extended ranges. The system uses enhanced analytics to help drivers see beyond their headlamps and detect pedestrians, vulnerable road users, and animals up to 200 meters in good weather. The system alerts drivers of potential dangers in total darkness and other low visibility conditions including fog, smoke, and blinding on-coming headlights.

Veoneer’s business supports the Global Sustainable Development Goals and its technologies supports goal #3, halving the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents. According NHTSA1, more pedestrian fatalities occur in the dark (76%) than in daylight (20%), dusk (2%), and dawn (2%). Compared to the 3rd generation system, the camera size is 50% smaller and 50% lighter enabling Veoneer to include more cameras per pallet during shipment, reducing carbon emissions during transportation and delivery to the Cadillac production line.

Veoneer is the market leader for automotive thermal sensing systems, delivering globally to 11 customers on more than 35 vehicle models. The all-new Cadillac Escalade will be the first of several models to be equipped with Veoneer’s automotive industry-first thermal sensing system. The 2021 Escalade also offers Super Cruise as an option, the first truly hands-free driver assistance feature for compatible highways. Veoneer is pleased to be a key part of the architecture with the introduction of our all-new High Definition Map and Localization Module.  This technology platform provides Super Cruise stored data from sensors across the vehicle including cameras, GPS, and HD Maps in order to position the vehicle in the lane and safely perform the Super Cruise maneuvers, including Lane-Change-on-Demand functionality.

«Veoneer’s 4th generation thermal sensing system is a leap forward in the innovation of smaller automotive thermal cameras with increased resolution and improved analytics to enhance the detection of pedestrians and animals on the road,» says Jan Carlson, Veoneer’s Chairman, President and CEO.  «The launch of our newest thermal sensing system and the inclusion of our localization technology on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is an important milestone in Veoneer’s journey towards safe collaborative driving.»

This business is included in Veoneer’s previously announced backlog.
