Stolen vehicle tracking solutions, which accounted for 51% of aftermarket connections in 2020, vary from vehicle recovery related services only, coupled with other telematics services, or associated with an insurance policy. They have the highest adoption among all aftermarket connected car applications and are perfectly suited for countries with a unique combination of a growing economy and high theft rates, such as Brazil. The application is expected to reach 88 million subscriptions by 2026.

Consumer infotainment devices accounted for 32% of all aftermarket subscriptions and all aftermarket shipments in 2020. Unlike UBI and stolen vehicle trackers, these solutions are mostly sold via MNOs channels, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, and are easier to sell as they can be integrated into existing clients’ data plans for a small monthly added cost. Nevertheless, shipments are in decline due to the increase in smartphone apps and embedded systems. 

Insurance telematics made 17% of all aftermarket connected vehicle subscriptions in 2020, with a flat growth from 2019. A timid and steady rise will perpetuate in the next years because the UBI segment is yet to achieve maturity. While TSPs such as Octo Telematics and IMS use their data analytics expertise to offer insurers tools to improve driver behavior, insurers’ business models lack the required level of customer engagement to secure customer loyalty, resulting in unsatisfactory ROI.

Despite the challenges, there are opportunities in the aftermarket, especially concerning data monetization. There is a consensus that valuable driving and driver data generated from diverse data collection methods are not being used to its full potential to generate new revenue streams. Apart from notable examples such as Arity, most TSPs and insurers are still very traditional and lack the marketing approach required to create solid business models. «The transformation of the data collected into actionable knowledge that delivers value to the final consumer or increases profit, such as accurate customer churn prediction or data-driving cross-selling, is the main industry challenge. Moreover, dedicated solutions for underserved players in the value chain, such as keyless services for dealers that enable contactless test drives of vehicles pre-selected online, are a profit-making opportunity,» Bezzera concludes.

Lancaster has been a pioneer in green energy for over a decade. Mayor R. Rex Parris stated «our current energy alternatives are not enough to reach our goals. We see hydrogen as a viable solution that will reduce carbon emissions not only for our residents but everyone — improving the air we breathe, providing secure and reliable energy, and creating skilled jobs within the industry.»

This latest model of Mirai, which means «future» in Japanese, is built on the rear-wheel drive GA-L platform of the larger Lexus LS sedan. This allows for increased hydrogen storage, bringing the car’s Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA)-estimated range to over 300, a 30 percent increase over the first-generation front-wheel drive Mirai. The fuel cell system has also been redesigned to offer more power delivered to the 20-inch alloy wheels.

As members of the California Fuel Cell Partnership, the City of Lancaster collaborates with partners on activities that advance the technology that is aimed at expanding the market for fuel cell electric vehicles powered by hydrogen to help create a cleaner, more energy-diverse future with no-compromise zero emission vehicles.

«The Mirai is proof that hydrogen works,» said Heslin.  «It has a much longer range than any of the current electric vehicles (EVs), and takes only minutes to fill up compared to charging batteries, which can take hours. California currently has 45 hydrogen (H2) filling stations. That number will increase to 100 in 2023, with plans to top 1,000 stations by 2030.»

Hydrogen Evolution in Commercial Transport

Rex Parris said. «Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are an important zero emission technology. Unfortunately, they draw from the power grid, which relies largely on fossil fuels Increased adoption of large commercial electric vehicles for transporting goods and people, however, would require bigger lithium batteries ushering in a host of new environmental problems. The game-changing application for hydrogen is long haul and heavy-duty transport,» Mayor Parris said. «Imagine self-driving, zero-emission trucks that can cross the country with only a few quick stops to refuel.»

Hydrogen (H2) by contrast has a much higher energy density than energy stored in electric vehicle batteries. H2 can be stored in vast quantities for long periods of time with on-demand retrieval capacity. The fuel also integrates into existing infrastructure like pipelines and power plants as an alternative to fossil-based natural gas.

Now, a single LED can serve as both the stop lamp and the tail lamp at the same time with only 5.5mm thickness of the LED surface.

Most vehicles today have the tail lamp and stop lamp separately under the safety laws. According to the laws, the stop lamp must be much brighter than the tail lamp.

However, the HLED, developed by Hyundai Mobis, allows the tail lamp and the stop lamp to be implemented with a single LED by just controlling the light with electrical signals.

Moreover, the HLED can generate bright and uniform stop light even when it is bent by emitting light in five different directions. As a result, the rear lamp will be more visible to the drivers of the vehicles approaching from the rear and side.

Compared to the existing ream lamp, HLED can create various lamp design since it can be bent or curved. It is also possible to secure more space and offer lower weight, as it removes all the internal components used for existing rear lamp by controlling light with the new LED alone.

Hyundai Mobis has passed the reliability tests of Europe (ECE) and the US (SAE) related to tail lamps and stop lamps. It has already received orders from European automakers and is currently conducting mass-production development of HLED.

LONDON, Feb. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Following this morning’s UK Supreme Court ruling that Uber drivers are workers, not self-employed contractors, global union federation representing 20 million transport workers has called on Uber to abandon its predatory business model globally.

The unanimous dismissal of Uber’s appeal handed down by the court ends a long-running legal battle after Uber appealed and lost through all four rounds.

In welcoming this morning’s landmark decision, Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) called on Uber to emerge from behind their app and extend protections to its drivers and riders globally.

«We congratulate the claimants, their representatives and legal teams. This is a victory for all workers fighting for decent work in the gig economy,» said Cotton. «For the fourth and final time, British judges have ignored Uber’s twisted and fictional contract language and concluded that the company is misclassifying its drivers.»

Today’s ruling arrives almost one year after France’s highest court ruled that Uber drivers are employees.

«Despite attempts by Uber and other gig economy companies to misclassify their workers as independent contractors, courts are increasingly recognising direct employment relationships. The tide is turning,» said Cotton.

«It’s time for Uber to abandon both its predatory business model and its aggressive legal and regulatory strategies and recognise their drivers and riders as workers with protections and rights that they are entitled to,» added Cotton.

For Uber drivers, today’s decision means that they can finally enjoy fundamental workers’ rights including the national minimum wage, holiday pay, sick pay, protection against unlawful discrimination and collective bargaining rights.

The Supreme Court judgment emphasised five aspects which led to the Court’s conclusion on worker status:

  1. Uber sets the fare;
  2. Drivers have no say in contract terms;
  3. Once a driver has logged onto the Uber app, the driver’s choice about whether to accept requests for rides is constrained by Uber (i.e. penalties for not accepting rides);
  4. Uber exercises significant control over the way in which drivers deliver their services (i.e. low ratings result in deactivations); and
  5. Uber restricts communications between passenger and driver to the minimum necessary (i.e. there can be no contracting between driver and passenger).
