NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 10, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Even when circumstances mean that being indoors is the safe and, at times, unexciting option, racer Leh Keen recently found a way to make being indoors considerably less boring.

There’s a Guinness World Records title for the fastest speed by a vehicle indoors – and, until recently, it stood at 86 mph. The rules – strictly enforced by Guinness World Records – are daunting. Leh had to start his record attempt and finish it at a standstill, all within the space of the building – there could be no run up, no safety net and no doors open and therefore no escape route. For good reasons, therefore, the record has stood for seven years.   

Nevertheless, Leh proceeded enthusiastically with his planning. He required a car that was surefooted in challenging conditions, a vehicle that’s among the hardest accelerating and, just as important, hardest decelerating cars on sale today and that he would trust his life with in order to safely break the record safely. The car that met this criteria was the all-electric Taycan Turbo S, possessing a maximum of 750 hp, with four wheel drive to maximize grip, powerful carbon ceramic brakes and the ability to accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in just 2.6 seconds.

Selecting the right building was just as challenging. Enter the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. At just over one million square feet, the convention center boasts having the largest contiguous exhibit hall in the United States, ideal for the distance it provided. However, like many other indoor facilities, the polished concrete surface replicated ice when being driven over at speed…

«I didn’t really appreciate the scale of the record attempt until my first exploratory run. The surface is so unpredictable, so slick, that you have to have complete trust in your car. It truly was like ice – and you’re accelerating flat out, facing a really hard wall at the end. Suddenly, even in a massive space like the one we had, it seems very small,» said Leh Keen after his record attempt. «I could feel the Taycan’s systems figuring it out, working so hard to keep me heading straight – it was such an impressive feat. To accelerate so hard on such an erratic surface was incredible. Not for a moment did I doubt I could do it.»

Leh’s strategy was to build up slowly, with low speed exploratory runs. The stock street tires were preheated as a precaution. And, when it came to the record attempt, one run was all it took. «I did take a moment on the starting line – knowing I was going to have to go as fast as I could, and stop again, all before reaching the wall I was facing. It got my attention. I used the car’s launch control and the Taycan just hooked up – the sensation of speed indoors, even in such a big space, is enormous – that wall rushed up fast. I was gentle on the brakes in the end – the Taycan’s brakes were more than up to the job. Of course, I didn’t look down at my speed so it came as a surprise and a relief that I’d beaten the record, and by such a margin. It was a rush! I’m thankful for Porsche for trusting my abilities and for their preparations and encouragement – 102 mph inside a building. What was I thinking?»

The Guinness World Records title for the fastest speed achieved by a vehicle indoors was confirmed by independent adjudicators as 102.6 mph – set by Leh Keen at the New Orleans Convention Center in a Porsche Taycan Turbo S.

Our results also showed a decrease in annual consumer surplus per outdoor recreation participant of about 19% (averaged across all models) or 26% (for preferred model), which can be attributed to post-COVID-19 reductions in site quality, perceived risks, and time-use substitution patterns.»

HEALDSBURG, Calif., Feb. 10, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Wine Road, a destination marketing association of wineries and lodgings in Northern Sonoma County, announces WINElove weekend, a long overdue chance to get out and meet winemakers, taste limited production wines and new releases, March 19 – 21. The link to purchase «WINElove Access» goes live on March 1st.

Weekend visitors will be able to enjoy the beauty of Sonoma County and treat themselves to a relaxed, personalized tasting experience. WINElove Weekend will not take place at one location as participants will travel from winery to winery, exploring the ones that are of interest. Each winery will provide a minimum of three wines to taste and tasting fees at each winery are covered by the access pass.
«We’re excited to have nearly 40 wineries participating and eager to share their WINElove,» says Beth Costa, Executive Director of Wine Road. «For 2021, this will take the place of our annual Winter WINEland, which we could not do given the State stay at home order in January.  This tasting experience will be much smaller in scope with only a few hundred reservations available.»

After purchase, visitors will need to book reservations separately at each winery they plan to visit to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, space limitations, and the requirement of seated tastings. Be prepared to be seated outdoors at all wineries and dress accordingly. Safety protocols required of wineries will be in place at each winery: outdoor seating, social distancing, and masks worn until seated. Each reservation will be for 1 hour. Given the new reservation requirement, it is suggested that visitors plan to visit three wineries per day.

Click on the program link at the Wine Road website to see a list of participating wineries, which currently include favorites such as Davis Family Vineyards, Hook & Ladder Winery, Pech Merle, Wilson Winery and Merriam Vineyards.  A more detailed program for each winery will be posted on the Wine Road website on February 20th.
