Indiana Sportsbooks Fueled by State’s Football Success to Reach $250 Million, According to PlayIndiana

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Indiana sportsbooks continued their torrid pace in November — surpassing $250 million in wagers in a month for the first time — as local bettors continued to put money on the state’s NFL and college football teams, according to analysts from

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Indiana sportsbooks continued their torrid pace in November — surpassing $250 million in wagers in a month for the first time — as local bettors continued to put money on the state’s NFL and college football teams, according to analysts from PlayIndiana.

«Indiana has largely managed to shrug off increased competition from its neighbors, which is a good sign for the future of the state’s industry,» said Dustin Gouker, lead analyst for PlayIndiana.com. «A lot has gone right in recent months to get Indiana to this new high point, but considering the challenges, it has been an impressive string of months.»

The state’s online and retail sportsbooks accepted $251.4 million in bets in November, according to official reporting released Thursday. That marks the third consecutive month Indiana sportsbooks have set a state record for monthly handle, topping $230.9 million hit in October.

Wagering in November produced a record $25.3 million in adjusted gross revenue for the state’s operators, up 20% from the record $21.1 million set in October, and yielded $2.4 million in state taxes. Year over year, Indiana’s handle grew 70.7% from $147.3 million in November 2019 while gross revenue jumped 172.4% from $9.3 million.

«I think some of the worries that Indiana would slip as its neighbors legalized sports betting are calming,» said Jessica Welman, analyst for PlayIndiana.com. «The market in the Hoosier State is proving to be quite dynamic.»

One way the Hoosier State, the fifth-largest sports betting market in the U.S., has been able to improve is a boost in local football interest. Notre Dame and Indiana University are both among college football’s elite, and the Colts continue their drive toward the NFL playoffs. The result is a swell of football bets, hitting $113.5 million in November, a rise of 33.9% from $84.7 million in October and up 96.5% from $57.7 million in November 2019.

«There really isn’t any substitute in sports betting for a local team doing well, and Indiana is enjoying three at once,» Gouker said. «And with both college and NBA basketball returning, a sport that enjoys particular interest in Indiana compared with most other legal jurisdictions, December really sets up to be another jump forward.»

Online betting generated 85%, or $213.7 million, of November’s handle, increasing the share of all bets from 83.6% in October. DraftKings/Ameristar Casino continued its dominance of the digital market, increasing its bets to $95.2 million in November from $90.5 million in October even as gross receipts dipped to $7 million. FanDuel/Blue Chip Casino was second with $64.2 million in wagers and $7.7 million in gross receipts.

Retail sportsbooks took in $37.7 million in November wagers, down slightly from $37.9 million in October. Once dominated by sportsbooks nearest Chicago, retail sportsbooks were led in November by Hollywood Lawrenceburg ($11.6 million in handle), nearest Cincinnati.

«Chicago is still an important market for sportsbooks near the border, but the combination of Illinois’ sports-betting expansion and the pandemic has challenged the retail market,» Welman said. «As a whole, though, growth in online betting has more than made up for any slowdown in the retail market. And Indiana made last-minute protocol changes to keep casinos open while properties in surrounding states shut down, which has helped the industry.»

The Volta stations will be introduced at the new 180,000-square-foot, LEED-certified Emory Musculoskeletal Institute as part of Emory Healthcare’s ongoing commitment to develop innovative treatments and provide solutions for health care challenges facing their community.

Volta’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by offering free charging at the places customers like to visit. By combining charging stations with eye-catching 55-inch digital displays, the Volta charging network doubles as a sophisticated out-of-home advertising platform. They operate over 1,400 sponsor-supported electric vehicle charging stations that provide free, clean energy to the communities they serve. Collectively, the stations form a nationwide media network that generates millions of daily impressions. Over 80 percent of Volta’s network is located at the front door of essential services such as grocery stores, pharmacies, banks and hospitals.

«Emory University and Dr. Boden’s commitment to the electric vehicle’s role in reducing air pollution benefits both their community and the environment,» said Scott Mercer, Founder and CEO of Volta. «It is a known fact that there are prompt and substantial health gains from the reduction of tailpipe emissions. Volta is proud to partner with Dr. Boden, and the Emory Musculoskeletal Institute in pursuit of a holistic and visionary approach to better health,» he added.

The team at Volta used a proprietary platform to recommend the amount of charging stations needed for the new building. The tool showed electric vehicle adoption for a 20-mile radius around the planned facility, and it was 16 percent higher than the U.S. average and 44 percent higher than the Atlanta average– a perfect site for charging stations.

About Volta

For over a decade, Volta has been building a nationwide electric vehicle charging network to drive the world forward. Named after Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electric battery, Volta’s award-winning charging stations benefit brands, consumers, and real-estate locations by providing valuable advertising space to businesses and free charging to drivers. Strategically located in places where consumers already spend their time and money, Volta’s chargers are currently the most used electric vehicle charging stations in the United States.  Headquartered in San Francisco, Volta is bringing to communities the means of building a sustainable fueling network for the 21st century. To learn more, visit www.voltacharging.com.

PLANO, Texas, Dec. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Toyota’s next generation fuel cell electric technology is now powering a new set of Class 8 heavy-duty trucks. Using the same fuel cell system as the all-new 2021 Mirai sedan that goes on sale this month, the engineers at Toyota Motor North America Research and Development have developed a set of production-intent prototype trucks that are being prepared to run drayage routes at the ports of L.A. and Long Beach to validate their performance, efficiency and drivability.

Designed to be flexible enough to meet the needs of a wide variety of OEM truck makers, the new fuel cell electric system in the latest prototypes has been adapted to a Kenworth T680 chassis. A more compact hydrogen storage cabinet behind the cab houses six hydrogen tanks with the same capacity as previous prototypes while a new, more powerful lithium-ion battery helps smooth out the power flow to the electric motors. In this configuration, the second generation fuel cell system delivers over 300 miles of range at a full load weight of 80,000 lbs., all while demonstrating exceptional drivability, quiet operation, and zero harmful emissions.

«This is an important step in the transition to emissions-free heavy-duty trucks,» said Andrew Lund, chief engineer, Toyota Motor North America Research and Development. «Our first prototype trucks proved that a fuel cell electric powertrain was capable of hauling heavy cargo on a daily basis. These new prototypes not only use production-intent hardware, they will also allow us to start looking beyond drayage into broader applications of this proven technology.»

Reducing airborne pollution at the Ports of L.A. and Long Beach is an important driver of this program. Toyota’s Environmental Challenge 2050 aims to almost completely eliminate CO2 emissions from our vehicles, operations and supply chain by 2050. Converting the drayage trucks that currently serve these ports to electric drivetrains would move us closer to that goal while improving the quality of life of operators, workers, and communities in and around the ports.

TMNA R&D

Toyota Motor North America Research & Development (TMNA R&D) aims to redefine next-generation vehicles to more than simply a form of transportation.  Since 2003, Toyota has been awarded more patents than any other automaker, including autonomous vehicle patents (more than 1,400). Centered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Toyota TMNA R&D puts the brightest thinkers from across the globe together to focus on letting people live more safely and comfortably. Globally, Toyota spends approximately $1 million per hour on R&D to ensure that Toyota rapidly and continuously develops cutting-edge, high-quality, and appealing vehicles.

PLANO, Texas, Dec. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The future of heavy-duty trucking will arrive at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach this month. The first two fuel cell electric heavy duty Class 8 trucks built under the Zero and Near Zero Emissions Freight Forwarding (ZANZEFF) project sponsored by the state of CA are preparing for delivery to demonstration fleet customers.

The first two fuel cell electric heavy duty Class 8 trucks built under the Zero and Near Zero Emissions Freight Forwarding (ZANZEFF) project sponsored by the state of CA are preparing for delivery to demonstration fleet customers.

Toyota Logistics Services and Southern Counties Express each will receive a Kenworth T680 Class 8 truck powered by a Toyota fuel cell electric drivetrain. Both of these zero-emissions trucks will be used for drayage operations in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

«We have been involved with Toyota’s hydrogen truck project since the beginning and we are excited to see the latest models now being released for further testing,» said Gordon Reimer, president, Southern Counties Express. «We are proud to be associated with the Toyota research and development team, and look forward to the continued progress of this technology.»

An additional 8 trucks will be delivered in 2021 as part of the ZANZEFF program. Three of the eight trucks will go to United Parcel Service for its port operations while two of the eight trucks will go to Total Transportation Services, another prominent port operator. Toyota Logistics Services will also receive three additional trucks.

«After extensive testing with our proof-of-concept prototypes, we’re ready for the next step of putting more trucks into drayage operations,» said Andrew Lund, chief engineer, Toyota Research and Development. «Moving toward emissions-free trucks is more important than ever, and the ZANZEFF project has been instrumental in getting us closer to that goal.»

Development of the Kenworth T680 FCEV is part of a $41 million Zero and Near-Zero Emissions Freight Facilities (ZANZEFF) grant awarded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), with the Port of Los Angeles as the prime applicant. CARB has awarded those funds to the Port of Los Angeles for the ZANZEFF project as part of California Climate Investments, a California initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment.

«The Port is currently engaged in 16 different zero-emission demonstration projects to support development of on-road trucks that we expect will help bring feasible zero-emission technology to the marketplace,» said Chris Cannon, chief sustainability officer for the Port of Los Angeles. «Conversion of the Port drayage fleet to zero-emission technology involves tremendous financial investment and will take the collaboration and commitment of many stakeholders – both public and private – to create a viable market for zero-emissions drayage technology. We are proud of our continuing partnership under this project to deploy these trucks as an important step in verifying the capabilities and role of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the path to zero emissions.»
