Storylines Answers How Do We Cruise Now?

NEW YORK, Oct. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — With every destination on the planet having experienced travel restrictions this year, the global cruise industry is amongst the hardest hit travel-sectors.

Currently, there are a small number of cruises in regions such as the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea are attempting new interim solutions such as creating «cruise bubbles«. Said bubbles operate at 50 to 70% occupancy, with onboard social distancing practices and shore discovery available only on guided tours booked directly with the cruise itself.

This has already led to the Italian ship MSC Grandiosa denying a family re-embarkation after they left the guided tour in Naples, in breach of their Covid-19 protocols.

What follows is a likely road map as we look ahead.

During the next year, cruise travel can be expected to move from crowded, city excursions to offering the experience of connecting to nature and wildlife, as well as more niche expeditions to previously unexplored regions and uninhabited islands.

From 2022 and onwards, the impact from Covid-19 should lessen as a result of improved protocols, testing, and health infrastructure along with transmission decreases due to a gradual build-up of immunity from recovered patients and potential vaccines.

Three years out, in 2023, Covid-19 may still be around but is more likely to be isolated to regions or specific countries.

Heading into 2024 and onwards, many experts agree most interim solutions are likely no longer to be necessary, however, cruises may learn to prefer more niche experiences than rushed city tours prevalent in the industry before now.

An innovative company, Storylines, (www.storylines.com ), is preparing for such a future of luxury travel in creating a safe environment to live and cruise, using every technology, and protocol available now and those developed in next three years haven for its residents as a crucial feature of the company’s forward-thinking concept. Storylines CEO Alister Punton says, «With a little forethought, innovation, and smartly implemented protocols, our lifestyle won’t be limited to locked down cities or wearing masks aboard.»

Storylines intends to address your health from every aspect, from sanitation, to nutrition, keeping you engaged, healthier, happier. From the sunshine’s Vitamin D, from the emotional engagement with the onboard community and cultural stimulation, Storylines aims to enable residents to live, healthier, happier lives.

To do so, Storylines’ Dr. Brian Martin leads a holistic medical approach with assistance from top environmental engineers and sustainability officers. In addition to the hospital facilities of a small city, Storylines has introduced industry-leading health protocols and advanced sanitation equipment, including HEPA air filtration, UV sanitization, and stay-clean surfaces throughout. Collectively these approaches are designed to protect residents in their floating home more than modern big-city life.

Storylines CEO Alister Punton says, «Storylines residents’ life aboard is similar to a gated community.  High-risk activities such as buffets have been replaced with 20 unique restaurants, passenger density at just 40% of a typical cruise ship, and as a residential ship, there is little turnover of passengers and crew. That combined with total control over what goes on and off the ship, the threat of Covid-19 exposure is greatly minimized or eliminated – allowing for safe cruising amongst a healthy, active community.»

Alaska Airlines partners with Surfline to bring back ‘Swell Deals’

SEATTLE, Oct. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — After the popularity of its first «Swell Deals» fare sale in 2019, Alaska Airlines’ data-driven deals are back, giving surfers everywhere one more reason to wish for bigger waves.

SEATTLE, Oct. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — After the popularity of its first «Swell Deals» fare sale in 2019, Alaska Airlines’ data-driven deals are back, giving surfers everywhere one more reason to wish for bigger waves.

Starting today, the airline is using dynamic ocean data to generate discounts for adventure seekers by partnering with global surf forecasting site Surfline. Based on the height of ocean waves in Hawaii and northern and southern California, Alaska will discount flights up to 30% off for travel to premier surfing destinations through Feb. 10, 2021. The bigger the waves, the bigger the discount.

«Our guests love the outdoors and staying active despite the pandemic, so we’re harnessing the power of data to support their passions – and make it even more affordable to visit top surfing spots for 2020,» said Natalie Bowman, Alaska Airlines’ managing director of brand and marketing communications. «Surfing is a sport that you can participate in safely and at a distance, so we believe this is the perfect sale to align with how and why people are traveling these days.»

Surfline will pull data from five different locations that monitor minute-by-minute forecasts around the Hawaiian Islands. The subregions for data tracking, recommended by Surfline as having the highest surf during this ticketing window, include: San Francisco; Oahu, North Shore; North Orange County, California; Oahu, South Shore; and Santa Cruz, California.

For flights booked between Oct. 20 and Oct. 23, for travel starting on Oct. 20, Alaska will discount fares based on the following max swell heights tracked by Surfline:

  • 0-3 feet = 10% off
  • 4-6 feet = 15% off
  • 7-12 feet = 20% off
  • 13+ feet = 30% off

This data will then be used for fare sales to these locations:

  • The Hawaiian Islands
  • California, including Santa Rosa (STS), Oakland (OAK), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC), Monterey (MRY), San Luis Obispo (SBP), Santa Barbara (SBA), Burbank (BUR), Los Angeles (LAX), Ontario (ONT), Santa Ana (SNA) and San Diego (SAN).

To purchase tickets or find more information on terms and conditions, visit alaskaair.com/swell

The discount will change daily at approximately noon and 5 p.m. PDT as Alaska gets the latest forecast information from Surfline. Throughout the course of the promotion, the discount level will never drop and can only increase as swells grow.

«We see surfers exercising their passions more than ever this year, as a way to de-stress and get outdoors,» said Surfline President Ross Garrett. «This partnership with Alaska Airlines opens doors for surfers to experience some of the best waves in the U.S., using our trusted surf reports and through an airline committed to getting them to their destinations safely. We’re sure they’re going to be excited about these fares.»

Like waves? How about waivers. To make travel easier, Alaska also waives oversize and overweight fees for sports equipment so guests can fly with their surfboards for just $30 (the price of a regular checked bag). For MVP Gold 75K, MVP Gold, MVP, First Class and Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card holders, this equipment counts toward their free checked baggage allowance.

For guests traveling to Hawaii, Alaska Airlines is partnering with Bartell Drugs and Carbon Health to offer discounted COVID-19 testing at its clinics across the West Coast, including in Seattle. Out-of-state travelers can enjoy the islands without a 14-day quarantine when they test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of their final leg of departure to Hawaii. More information, including how to schedule an appointment, is available at www.alaskaair.com/hawaii-bound

In addition to Alaska’s current twice-daily flights to the Hawaiian Islands from Seattle, on Nov. 1, nonstop service to Hawaii will resume from Portland, Oregon; San Jose, California; and San Diego, California. Hawaii service will begin from Anchorage, Alaska, and Los Angeles on Nov. 20. Carbon Health is planning additional pop-up and full-service clinics for rapid COVID-19 testing in those Lower 48 cities in the coming weeks. For travelers outside Seattle, testing is now currently available through Vault Health (at-home test), CityHealth Urgent Care (at the Oakland airport), AFC Urgent Care (Oregon) and more. Find more testing options here.

With a focus on helping guests travel safely when they feel comfortable, Alaska has implemented more than 100 safety measures as part of the airline’s commitment to Next-Level Care. The airline emphasizes a layered approach to safety, which starts with the requirement that all employees and guests wear a face mask or covering through the airport and on board, with no exceptions. Flyers must also enter into a health agreement at check-in to confirm that they are not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and will adhere to the mask policy. Alaska has also extended physical distancing on board by limiting the number of guests and blocking middle seats through Nov. 30, 2020.

Alaska Airlines and its regional partners serve more than 115 destinations across the United States and North America, providing essential air service for our guests along with moving crucial cargo shipments, such as food, medicine, mail and e-commerce deliveries. With hubs in Seattle; San Francisco; Los Angeles; Portland, Oregon; and Anchorage, Alaska, the airline is known for low fares, award-winning customer service and sustainability efforts. With Alaska and its Global Partners, guests can earn and redeem miles on flights to more than 800 destinations worldwide. Learn about Alaska’s award-winning service at newsroom.alaskaair.com and blog.alaskaair.com. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air are subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK).

The new portfolio company, doing business as Mighty of NEA (Northeast Arkansas), will be based in Jonesboro and serve as the exclusive distributor of Mighty automotive products for 25 counties in northeast Arkansas and five counties in southeast Missouri.

The Cavenaugh Auto Group began in 1978 when Don Cavenaugh and his father, Charles, acquired a Ford dealership in Black Rock, AR (30 miles NW of Jonesboro). Matt Cavenaugh said, «The Cavenaugh team is very excited to partner with Mighty. Seamless Air Alliance logo

This latest Release, available to Seamless Air Alliance members, defines the information provided by each network component, enabling suppliers to design and build OpenIFC products using the modular architecture and open interfaces from its first release. Developed by airline industry experts, OpenIFC is set to become the preferred choice for every airline going forward.

«Seamless Release 2.0 completes the blueprint needed for the industry to scale the deployment of future-proof, OpenIFC systems,» said Jack Mandala, CEO of Seamless Air Alliance. «This breakthrough will allow airlines to purchase best-of-breed components in a multi-vendor ecosystem, improving the efficiency of deploying, operating, and maintaining inflight systems – which is especially important as recent events have highlighted the critical role of connectivity.»

Seamless roaming presents a major monetization opportunity for Mobile Network Operators. In preparation for the official launch, Mandala was invited by GSMA to share some exclusive insight at today’s GSMA Wholesale Agreements and Solutions Group meeting.

«Connectivity is a priority for countries around the world and we believe that mobile operators have an important role to provide seamless, cost-effective connectivity everywhere. Seamless roaming will allow operators to meet a far greater expectation that travelers now have for accessing robust inflight connectivity in a convenient manner,» said Hidebumi Kitahara, Vice President, Head of Global Business Strategy Division, Technology Unit, SoftBank Corp.

Seamless Air Alliance has grown its membership significantly in recent months, welcoming several name organizations including American Airlines, Deutsche Telekom, International Airlines Group (IAG), SES, Telesat and Thales Group.

Intelsat, an early member of the Seamless Air Alliance, recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire the commercial aviation business of Gogo, the largest global provider of inflight connectivity. Mark Richman, Intelsat’s Director of Aero Products, said: «We have the opportunity to redefine the IFC ecosystem and passenger experience. Our open architecture network delivers unique value with the redundancy and resiliency needed to scale a premium internet service to every passenger, from gate to gate. LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — FlyerTalk.com (www.flyertalk.com), the world’s most popular frequent flyer community, has announced the winners of the 2020 FlyerTalk Awards. Now in their ninth year, these prestigious annual awards honor the best affinity programs in the airline, hotel and car rental industries, as voted by the world’s most elite frequent travelers.

Winners are usually announced each spring, but FlyerTalk delayed announcing the 2020 winners as originally planned in March 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic took hold around the world.

«As it has become clear that the travel industry will remain disrupted for the foreseeable future, we decided to announce the winners of the 2020 FlyerTalk Awards at this late date to officially commemorate the industry’s very best efforts in pre-COVID times,» said Paul O’Brien, producer of the FlyerTalk Awards. «We look to next year’s 2021 FlyerTalk Awards with great interest, as the results will reflect how the world’s biggest airline, hotel, and car rental brands have responded to the immense challenges of the coronavirus pandemic – as determined by the most frequent travelers in the world.»

FlyerTalk is a community of nearly three-quarters of a million business and leisure travelers dedicated to finding and sharing elite-level knowledge of air, hotel and car rental programs. FlyerTalkers cast ballots to determine the community’s favorite travel affinity programs in early 2020.

More than 140 programs worldwide vied for Best Program, signifying the finest combination of value, ease-of-redemption and customer service. FlyerTalk is presenting nine of these awards across three geographical regions.

Following a weeks-long nominations process in the FlyerTalk forums, a single benefit was chosen to represent each program. FlyerTalk is also presenting awards to the nine programs with the Outstanding Benefit of the past year.

Full official results of the 2020 FlyerTalk Awards and more information on the voting process can be found at www.flyertalk.com/awards.
