MONTREAL, Feb. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ – Lion Electric (Lion), a leading manufacturer of all-electric medium and heavy-duty urban vehicles, today announced that it has secured an order for its all-electric school buses from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). This initial order of 10 LionC school buses, which follows Lion’s recent delivery of all-electric school buses to the Twin Rivers Unified School District in Sacramento, further solidifies Lion’s leadership in zero-emission school buses in California and North America.

«LAUSD is possibly the most well-known school district in the United States, and we are pleased to have been chosen as a key partner in their journey toward zero-emission school bus operations,» said Marc Bedard, CEO and Founder of Lion Electric. «These all-electric buses signify the district’s commitment to improving the local environment and the health of its communities, and we are confident that they will meet and exceed the expectations of the operators and students.»

LAUSD is the second largest school district in the United States, serving over 600,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade at over 1,000 schools. The district’s boundaries stretch across 720 square miles and include the City of Los Angeles as well as all or parts of 31 municipalities and several unincorporated regions of Southern California.

Lion collaborated closely with the district in order to ensure its buses met the unique requirements posed by its large and diverse footprint. Each LionC bus purchased has a range of 155 miles on a single charge and incorporates an integrated wheelchair lift. Lion will also provide support and training to LAUSD from its recently opened Experience Center in the region, located in Alhambra, California. The buses are expected to be delivered in spring 2021.

The electric buses were funded in part by the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) School Bus Replacement Program, and Lion collaborated closely with LAUSD to add additional options to the base CEC specification to accommodate the unique needs of its routes. Under the program, Lion was awarded five out of the six available categories after extensive evaluations of EV drive system technical specifications, real-world deployments and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) EV capabilities. The CEC ranked Lion not only as the highest performing manufacturer in its technical evaluation, but also the manufacturer with the most cost-competitive bid.

Over the last decade, Lion has established itself as a leader in the all-electric school bus industry, having delivered over 300 all-electric school buses in North America with over 6 million miles driven since 2016. Lion’s vehicles are distributed and serviced through the company’s network of Experience Centers, including two locations in California along with facilities in New York, Washington, Florida and Arizona.

The company creates, designs and manufactures all-electric class 5 to class 8 commercial urban trucks and all-electric buses and minibuses for the school, paratransit and mass transit segments. Always actively seeking new and reliable technologies, Lion vehicles have unique features that are specifically adapted to its users and their everyday needs. Lion believes that transitioning to all-electric vehicles will lead to major improvements in our society, environment and overall quality of life.

Transaction with Northern Genesis

On November 30, 2020, Lion announced that it had entered into a business combination agreement and plan of reorganization pursuant to which, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lion will merge with Northern Genesis Acquisition Corp. (NYSE: NGA), a publicly traded special purpose acquisition company focused on a commitment to sustainability and strong alignment with environmental, social and governance principles. Upon completion of the transaction, Lion is expected to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the new ticker symbol «LEV».

POMONA, Calif., Feb. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Western University of Health Sciences President Daniel R. Wilson, MD, PhD, has been named to the Fulbright Specialist roster. Fulbright specialists serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at academic institutions abroad for a period of two to six weeks at a time.

Applications to join the Fulbright Specialists community are reviewed by a peer review panel assembled by The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State.

As a member of the Fulbright Specialist Program, Dr. Wilson will be eligible to travel abroad on behalf of the United States to work on a diverse, short-term collaborative project focused on education and training. The program pairs highly-qualified U.S. academics and professionals with host institutions abroad to share their expertise, strengthen institutional linkages, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn about other cultures while building capacity at their overseas host institutions, according to Fulbright. Where exactly or how often the Fulbright Specialist Program may take him over the next four years is to be determined by invitations from colleagues at institutions abroad.

«It’s not so much about where it is… as it is about the who and the what,» Wilson said. «What excites me is the idea of collaborating with international professionals and helping as many people as possible. I would particularly love to work with universities in other countries and even develop collaborations on behalf of Western University of Health Sciences – both abroad and within the United States

Wilson will retire as WesternU president at the end of June 2021 and, after a sabbatical, plans to serve the University as University Professor. His academic background and professional experience open many opportunities for idea exchange under the Fulbright Specialist program.

«In every country there are opportunities to have an impact in health care or education or social services, and that’s very exciting,» Wilson said. «Every time I visited another country, I came back with ideas on how we can do things differently here. There is truly an exchange. Specialists bring specialist knowledge, but it must be adapted to the country one is visiting. My own perspectives are sharpened and enhanced by spending time with colleagues in other countries.»

The U.S. Department of State suspended the Fulbright Program and postponed all Fulbright Specialist projects that have not yet commenced on March 12, 2020. As a result of the suspension, individuals who are recommended by the Peer Review Panel for placement on the Fulbright Specialist Roster will officially be added to the Roster after the U.S. Department of State determines that projects can resume. This will ensure that individuals receive a full, uninterrupted tenure during which time they may be matched to a project.

DOOR COUNTY, Wis., Feb. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration’s National Scenic Byways program named the Door County Coastal Byway (DCCB) a National Scenic Byway on February 16, 2021.

The Door County Coastal Byway stretches across 66 miles of Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula from north of the city of Sturgeon Bay on HWY 57 to the tip of peninsula and down HWY 42 back to the starting point.

The popular Door County circle tour route offers sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the Niagara Escarpment bluffs along with dense forests, agricultural lands, and travels through several of the peninsula’s quaint shore-side towns and villages.

DCCB’s council chairwoman, Annie Miller is thrilled with the new national title. «In 2009 we pursued the Wisconsin Scenic Byway designation in Door County and 10 years later our council believed we had what it took to pursue the national designation,» Miller said. «I felt the designation gave the communities the opportunity to preserve and protect the land and provided something for visitors no matter the season.»

Miller credits the cooperative efforts of many individuals and agencies that made this designation possible.

Time Out Travel Survey reveals over a third of people are planning a city getaway in 2021

LONDON, Feb. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Time Out, the global media and hospitality brand that helps people explore and experience the soul of the city, debuts its first global Travel Survey. The findings reveal that travellers are in search of a fusion of city and nature for their future trips. This emerging trend follows the results revealed from the global poll of more than 21,000 people, which indicates that more than a third are planning a city getaway this year.

Despite the pandemic emptying city centres in 2020, the survey reveals that just as many travellers are craving the unique culture and diversity of city holidays (41%) in 2021 as are planning nature and countryside escapes (42%). More people will be looking to travel with partners (16%) and family (14%) than friends (10%), with the majority (67%) saying they will travel by plane.

A fifth of respondents (19%) want to travel to both city and nature destinations this year. This has led Time Out editors worldwide to agree that when travel eventually resumes, there will be a greater pull toward two-part city and nature travel experiences. This ‘fusion trip’ trend will involve travellers exploring city neighbourhoods and their food and drink scenes, while discovering less-crowded culture spots and attractions. Following a few days of city exploration, travellers will venture out to find nearby nature trails, wide-open spaces and other outdoor activities.

Time Out International Editor, James Manning says: «It’s been a hard year for city life and for travel, so it’s incredibly heartening to see our Time Out Travel Survey identifying a huge interest in city breaks for 2021. We believe that cities will bounce back more quickly than anyone expects, given the huge pent-up demand for food, drink, culture and nightlife. Nevertheless, we’re expecting the surge in nature travel to continue too, with many people still preferring outdoor activities. The ‘fusion trip’ combines the best of both worlds: the vibe of the city, with a wave of travellers discovering the new urban phenomena emerging from the global shutdown, plus the relaxation (and built-in social distance) of a nature trip.»

The ‘fusion trip’ combines the best of both worlds: the vibe of the city, with a wave of travellers discovering the new urban phenomena emerging from the global shutdown, plus the relaxation (and built-in social distance) of a nature trip.»

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Nexteer Automotive, a leader in intuitive motion control, is pleased to join SAE ITC as part of the Health Ready Components and Systems (HRCS) consortium. Nexteer joins members Bell, Garrett Motion, General Motors, Global Strategic Solutions LLC, SafeRide Technologies, VHM Innovations LLC and Volvo Group Trucks Technology in the HRCS consortium to implement Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) technologies.

«Nexteer is excited to join SAE’s consortium on Health Ready Components and Systems.  Implementing a necessary framework and industry standard enables the deployment of new algorithms – such as in advanced steering features and functions – and increases the dependability of automated and connected vehicles,» said Robin Milavec, Senior Vice President, Executive Board Director, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), Nexteer Automotive.

Peter Grau, program manager, HRCS Consortium, stated: «We believe that IVHM technology will provide significant advantages in terms of performance, availability and safety. To date, the level of IVHM deployment has been limited due in part to a lack of uniform information sharing methods. The HRCS Consortium sees an opportunity to accelerate IVHM implementation through the application of open standards to promote interoperability and avoid the proliferation of costly and potentially counterproductive proprietary approaches.»

Nexteer joins the HRCS Consortium to deploy the best practices and guidance provided in the SAE JA6268™ Standard: Design & Run-Time Information Exchange for Health-Ready Components. SAE JA6268 is the foundational document which facilitates integration of IVHM functionality in health-ready components to meet the needs and objectives of operators, OEMs and government regulators in a cost-effective manner. The standard provides a structured methodology for specifying, characterizing and exposing the inherent IVHM functionality of a component or subsystem using a common functional reference model.

«With the growing technology push for increased electrification and even autonomy in the transportation sectors, VHM and the new SAE HRCS Consortium offers a proactive approach to mitigate the concurrent risks,» said Steve Holland, lead consultant for VHM Innovations, LLC and Chairman of the HRCS Consortium. «Game-changing opportunities abound for Vehicle Health Management in the transportation-related sectors and the new SAE HRCS Consortium promises to speed industrial application.»

IVHM solutions improve fleet efficiencies while improving product reliability and reducing unplanned maintenance and warranty costs. The HRCS Consortium is establishing a multi-sector, global IVHM community to create best practices and procedures for operators, OEMs and suppliers. This will facilitate and promote industry-wide application of IVHM technology to improve asset operational availability, sustainment and efficiencies. The HRCS Consortium will define registration and qualification processes and approvals. Registered component capabilities and contact information will be made available via the SAE HRCS database.
