CARICOM IMPACS will use Windward’s Predictive Intelligence platform to identify illicit maritime trade in the region

LONDON, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Windward, the Predictive Intelligence company applying AI to transform global maritime trade, announced today that it has partnered with The Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS), an organization of fifteen Member States and five Associate Members in the Caribbean as well as CARICOM’s Regional Security System (RSS), a treaty organization comprising of Barbados and other countries in the Eastern Caribbean. Windward’s AI-powered maritime intelligence platform will empower CARICOM IMPACS and RSS to support CARICOM Member States in their fight against drug trafficking and illegal activities in the Caribbean’s exclusive economic zones.

As the entryway to the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea is a main stop-over in the trade route from South to North America and illicit activities such as drug trafficking and other types of smuggling are becoming increasingly commonplace, especially in light of recent sanctions placed on Venezuela. Despite a decrease in general maritime activity in the region during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in illicit maritime activities in the Caribbean in recent months. Windward’s platform will support CARICOM Countries, through CARICOM IMPACS and RSS, in their fight against illicit activities by providing a real-time view of the maritime ecosystem and offering AI-powered risk assessments of vessels, companies, shipowners, and all other stakeholders in the maritime domain.

«Windward’s solution is key in our fight against illegal activities,» said Lieutenant Colonel Michael Jones, Executive Director (Ag) of CARICOM. «As illegal shipping methods are becoming more advanced, we turned to Windward’s industry-leading Maritime AI solution to assist in detecting these activities and flagging vessels that are suspicious, enabling us to assist CARICOM Member States to crack down on illicit trade, minimize and/or prevent illegal fishing, and surveil the maritime domain, beyond AIS monitoring.»

Windward’s Maritime AI is powered by hundreds of behavioral analytics models and over 10 billion data points, giving authorities the power to make smarter decisions, faster. Relying on thousands of case studies and a vast array of parameters including vessel routes, Dark Activities, and unusual changes in course, Windward’s platform analyzes existing behaviors to predict in real-time which entities are likely to be involved in illicit activities. Windward’s solution is the new global standard in maritime control, enabling government bodies to protect their borders, national interests, and citizens. The partnership with CARICOM IMPACS and RSS comes on the heels of Windward’s announcements of a partnership with the EU’s Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre-Narcotics (MAOC-(N)) in October 2020 and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex in January 2021.

«We are thrilled that CARICOM has chosen Windward to help protect its territorial waters throughout the Caribbean,» said Ami Daniel, CEO and Co-Founder of Windward. «The Caribbean Sea is a major point in the trade route of illegal substances leaving South America and of sanctioned oil leaving Venezuela. Using Windward’s Maritime AI technology and real-time insights, CARICOM is strengthening its defenses against these activities and enhancing the transparency needed into the global maritime domain to protect its borders.»

Goodyear, EASE Logistics And The City Of Dublin, Ohio To Collaborate On Connected Mobility Pilot

AKRON, Ohio, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company (NASDAQ: GT), EASE Logistics and the City of Dublin today announced a pilot as part of the Smart Columbus initiative to advance connected mobility.

For the pilot, the three participants will experiment in the areas of tire intelligence and cloud-based logistics among others within an innovation region located in and around Columbus, Ohio, known as the Beta District. With the potential to share and enhance data on connected mobility, these experiments could lead to new products and solutions that will benefit trucking fleets, consumers and cities in the future.

Initial tests will include the installation of Goodyear TPMS Plus systems on eight EASE Logistics vehicles traveling throughout the Beta District of the 33 Smart Mobility Corridor outside of Columbus, a leading location for testing connected vehicle technology in the Midwest. Once installed, Goodyear TPMS Plus will monitor tire conditions like pressure and temperature in real time, which can help prevent roadside breakdowns and improve vehicle safety and handling. EASE Logistics can leverage this data to initiate proactive maintenance and make routing decisions that improve traffic flow in the area.

«Goodyear has a longstanding reputation for innovation and plays a leading role in global initiatives to advance mobility,» said Johnny McIntosh, director of Integrated Solutions and Tire Management at Goodyear. «We continuously look for opportunities to collaborate with like-minded groups, such as EASE Logistics and the City of Dublin to test and learn with the ultimate goal of discovering new mobility solutions.»

«EASE and Goodyear share a common set of values regarding safety, sustainability, and service — and understand that innovation plays a key role in achieving these. As such, we are committed to innovating in the area of Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technology to keep vehicles connected and drivers safe throughout the transportation process,» said Peter Coratola Jr., president of EASE Logistics. «EASE recognizes this collaboration as a stepping stone toward more advanced technologies like autonomous trucks that may one day reduce delays and commute times, prevent crashes and cut emissions by maintaining consistent speeds.»

As part of the Beta District, the City of Dublin was chosen for this pilot as it aspires to be the most connected community in the United States and is located in the same state where Goodyear and EASE Logistics are headquartered.

«The Beta District is where companies work collaboratively with non-profits, academia, and government entities in an open playground to safely launch, test and evolve new technology in real-world settings,» said Doug McCollough, chief information officer for the City of Dublin. «Leveraging expertise in distribution and logistics through EASE Logistics, with the global research and development capabilities of Goodyear, the City of Dublin offers the truly unique public perspective of local government dedicated to fostering innovation in the smart mobility space.»

Global Air Cargo Services Market Report 2021: Market is Expected to Reach $99.67 Billion in 2025 – Forecast to 2030

DUBLIN, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The «Air Cargo Services Global Market Report 2021: COVID-19 Impact and Recovery to 2030» report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

Research and Markets Logo

The global air cargo services market is expected to grow from $56.48 billion in 2020 to $64.98 billion in 2021 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15%.

Air Cargo Services Global Market Report 2021: COVID-19 Impact and Recovery to 2030 provides the strategists, marketers and senior management with the critical information they need to assess the global air cargo services market as it emerges from the COVID-19 shut down.

Major companies in the air cargo transport services market include Cathay Pacific Cargo; FedEx; The Emirates Group; United Parcel Service and DHL Aviation.

The growth is mainly due to the companies rearranging their operations and recovering from the COVID-19 impact, which had earlier led to restrictive containment measures involving social distancing, remote working, and the closure of commercial activities that resulted in operational challenges. The market is expected to reach $99.67 billion in 2025 at a CAGR of 11%.

The air cargo transport services market consists of sales of air cargo transport services and related goods by entities (organizations, sole traders and partnerships) that use aircraft, such as airplanes and helicopters to provide air transportation of cargo and mail on a contract basis over fixed international routes. The air cargo services market is segmented into air mail and air freight.

Asia Pacific was the largest region in the global air cargo services market, accounting for 40% of the market in 2020. North America was the second largest region accounting for 26% of the global air cargo services market. Eastern Europe was the smallest region in the global air cargo services market.

Air cargo companies are increasingly using block chain technology to improve efficiency, minimize losses, and prevent damage to cargo. Block chain technology allows air cargo companies to digitally track and record the change of custody for airline cargo containers, or Unit Load Devices (ULDs), as they journey between destinations.

For instance, block chain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) is pushing for a standardized implementation in the logistics industry. Large industry players such as UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Union Pacific have signed on with BiTA. Sita, an air transport communications and information technology company estimate the possibility of using block chain technology to save $400M a year for the air cargo industry.

Survey: Majority of Business Leaders Don’t Support $15 Minimum Wage; Job Seekers Narrowly Approve

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Seventy-four percent of business leaders do not support a federal minimum wage increase to $15 per hour, while job seekers narrowly support the measure at 57%.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Seventy-four percent of business leaders do not support a federal minimum wage increase to $15 per hour, while job seekers narrowly support the measure at 57%.

This is according to a recent poll conducted on Express Employment Professionals’ blogs for business leaders and job seekers.

When asked further how a $15 federal minimum wage would impact their employee count, 51% of business leaders said they would have to reduce their workforce numbers, and 42% said there would be no impact. Seven percent said they could actually increase headcount with the change.

Job seeker survey respondents provided examples of how the minimum wage increase would impact their household, including:

  • «It would cause inflation in prices for other goods to compensate for the higher wage.»
  • «It would help in the short term, but with the long-term rising costs of everything and small businesses more likely to close permanently, it’s not worth it. Also, most jobs pay close to or more than $15 to start.»
  • «It would help me pay my rent, utilities, and other living expenses.»
  • «My family wouldn’t be struggling as much as we are now.»
  • «Long-term, I see it as a negative as inflationary pressure would quickly increase the cost-of-living to the point that the minimum wage workers would be returned to their prior economic status.»
  • «It’s not enough in certain parts of California. Cost of living keeps going up, but wages don’t.»

In Florida where Express franchise owner Mike Brady operates, state legislation dictates a gradual minimum wage increase over the next three years until it reaches $15 an hour.

«I think employee count at clients we serve will stay the same and others will decrease a little,» the Jacksonville franchisee said. «It’ll be a mixed bag that will impact all companies in some form or fashion.»

Similar legislation was also passed in Connecticut, eventually reaching a state minimum wage of $15.

«There’s no question in my mind there will be fewer people working—it’s already happened going from $9.60 to $12 where it currently is at,» said Dwight Hahn, Windsor, Connecticut, Express franchise owner. «There is only so much margin in our manufacturing machine and the workforce will undoubtedly be reduced to keep costs affordable.»

In addition to the immediate impacts, both Brady and Hahn see long-term consequences that would impact the workforce.

«A big impact is having less people working,» Hahn said. «Businesses will have no choice but to make up the cost somewhere, and much of it will be in the area of manpower. Additionally, there will be fewer low-paying jobs for the person who wants entry-level work, part-time work or a second job.»

Brady predicts consumer goods, fast food and other services will cost more and the low- or no-skill workers will be negatively impacted.

«We’ll see the skills gap widen as a result of fewer opportunities to learn through entry-level positions, and the market will become even more competitive,» he said.

While Brady thinks a $15 minimum wage makes sense in locations with higher costs-of-living, Hahn disagrees.

«The principle is the same regardless of the location in the country,» he said. «There is a finite amount of payroll money to go around and businesses need to make tough decisions to keep their operations running within budget and at levels where their services are affordable to consumers.»

With the potential to impact so many parts of the economy, Express CEO Bill Stoller said any action on the proposed $15 minimum wage should be weighed carefully.

«Despite making strides to repair the economy, businesses are still struggling to recover from the COVID-19 shutdowns,» he said «Now might not be the best time to put their existence in further jeopardy by passing blanket legislation for very different parts of the country. Everyone deserves a fair wage, and we see this happening all over the country as demand picks up again.»

Survey Methodology
The survey of 1,290 business leaders, decision makers and job seekers was conducted in February 2021 through the Express Refresh Leadership and Job Journey blogs.

Global Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Markets, 2016-2019 & 2020-2027 by Technology, Type, Payload, Application

DUBLIN, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The «Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Market Share, Size, Trends, Industry Analysis Report By Technology; By AUV Type; By Payload; By Application; By Regions – Segment Forecast, 2020-2027» report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

Research and Markets Logo

The global autonomous underwater vehicle market size is expected to reach USD 2.10 Billion by 2027, according to the study.

Increasing numbers of research operations in the oil & gas industry, combined with growing public expenditure on marine water surveillance to preserve the equilibrium of aquatic life, are anticipated to drive the global AUV market over the forecast period.

The creation of an intricate seabed map ensures that petroleum and gas enterprises build pipelines and facilities is assisted by the use of autonomous underwater vehicles. Furthermore, mapping the ocean floors by autonomous underwater vehicles makes installation of submerged floors more cost-effective without harm to the underwater environment.

In addition, fast development in fish farming is also paving the way for the AUV market to grow as these vehicles can provide an inexpensive and safe platform for aqua farmers to monitor water quality parameters such as temperature, turbidity, and conductivity and observe fish conduct during aquaculture feeding procedures.

The growth of the AUV industry is hampered by the high capital investment and the difficulties in the establishment of connections at deep water levels. This hinders the vehicles in transmitting or sending data and other relevant information above sea level. Although sales volumes are rising, the use of vehicles that hinder the AUV sector is regulated by several government organizations.

Furthermore, in autonomous vehicles, the automotive manufacturers and their technology partners are engaged in the development of AI-driven systems to enable autonomous underwater vehicle. These systems integrate a broad range of AI-enabled technologies, including NLP and neural networks. These technologies offer several features that increase the understanding of underwater vehicles, enabling the safe drive with or without driver on board.

Autonomous underwater vehicle manufacturers are found to adopt primarily three kinds of approaches, namely acquisitions, collaborations and product launches, to create distinctive brand value and enrich their global market shares. Manufacturers of autonomous underwater vehicles are installing state-of-the-art sensor systems like Sonar.

Atlas Elektronik GmbH, Bluefin Robotics, Saab Group, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Boston Engineering Corporation, Oceanserver Technology, International Submarine Engineering (ISE) Ltd., Kongsberg Groups, Teledyne Technologies, Eca Group, Graal, Inc., and Fugro are major players working in the AUV market.

EDISON, N.J., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — During last week’s Senate Finance Committee confirmation hearing, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Xavier Becerra and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island agreed to work together on a pilot project to improve the end-of-life care experience for individuals and their families.

Having supported more than 300,000 individuals and their families through advanced illness decision-making, Vital Decisions offers its knowledge, evidence base and recommendations in support of expediting wide scale improvements in end-of-life care.

Research shows that individuals who receive advance care planning services are more likely to have conversations about their end-of-life care wishes, a turning point that increases the likelihood of receiving care that is consistent with their preferences and associated with better quality of life and greater satisfaction. Research also shows that having these conversations earlier in the illness trajectory has the most meaningful impact on the care experience, when the individual and the family can make optimal, unpressured decisions.

From its vantage point as an essential partner to Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial plans nationwide, Vital Decisions offers policy considerations for advance care planning best-practices delivered on a national scale:

  • Increase broad access to advance care planning services delivered by specialized behavioral health clinicians through a telehealth model.
  • Proactively engage individuals with serious illness, along with their caregivers, in Goals of Care conversations as a covered healthcare benefit.
  • Utilize evidence-based methods of intervention that demonstrate impact with diverse and underserved populations to improve access to care.
  • Leverage a coordinated, technological infrastructure to streamline the integration of advance care plans across the healthcare ecosystem.

When these best-practices are employed, Vital Decisions observes clinical evidence proving that activating and empowering individuals, their family and caregivers is transformational:

  • Increasing satisfaction with care planning: Survey data from over 30,000 program participants shows an overwhelming 88% of respondents highly value the advance care planning process.
  • Reducing unwanted, unwarranted care: More than 35 economic impact studies of the advance care planning provided through Vital Decisions’ Living Well program show that care aligned with an individuals’ preferences is consistently 20% lower in cost compared to care that does not incorporate personal preferences.

«Individuals and their families need significantly more help with the emotional side of care. We applaud Becerra and Sen. Whitehouse for making this a priority — it’s a personal issue for us too. We must make far greater and faster progress on behalf of all Americans,» said Leah Puccio, Vital Decisions’ CEO. «Our organization was founded to change healthcare decision making for the better, at scale. We offer our platform as a research conduit to fast-track our government and policymaking partners’ efforts.»

Research and Markets Logo

In this report, the analyst identifies the opportunities within coherent transmission markets based on the technology’s deployment throughout the network.

Coherent transmission markets include long-haul, submarine, metro, 5G infrastructure, cloud data centers, edge computing, and cable television. We examine the inherent advantages of coherent transmission compared with other approaches to boost network performance and how standards and MSAs are evolving to prepare the way for a coherent future.

The report also analyzes the full range of coherent products including chipsets, gearboxes, in-module FEC components, transceivers and coherent transmission equipment. These products are projected over a five-year period in both volume and value terms. We also identify the leading suppliers of these products analyze their suppliers’ strategies.

Coherent transmission has been used to boost performance in long-haul and submarine networks for decades. Today coherent is gradually penetrating down into metro networks, 5G infrastructure, and data centers as these parts of the network increasingly have to cope with bandwidth hungry video, IoT, AI and VR/AR traffic. MINNEAPOLIS, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As average temperatures around the globe climb, a preliminary study has found people with multiple sclerosis (MS) may expect worsening symptoms, enough to send them to the hospital more often. The preliminary study released March 2, 2021 will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 73rd Annual Meeting being held virtually April 17 to April 22, 2021.

«We know that heat sensitivity is common in multiple sclerosis, and climate scientists expect that periods of anomalously warm weather will become more frequent with climate change,» said study author Holly Elser, Ph.D., of Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif., and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. «Our study suggests that warming trends could have serious health implications over the long term for people living with MS.»

Anomalously warm weather was defined as any month in which local average temperatures were higher than the long-term average temperature for that month by at least 1.5 degrees Celsius, or almost 2 degrees Fahrenheit.

For the study, researchers looked at insurance claims for 106,225 people with MS living across the United States. Researchers calculated the estimated effect of anomalously warm weather on MS-related emergency department, inpatient and outpatient visits. Researchers then compared the number of medical visits for each person during periods of anomalously warm weather to periods of normal weather.

Researchers found that during periods of anomalously warm weather, participants had a 4% increased chance of having an emergency department visit compared to periods of normal weather. Participants had a 3% increased chance of having an inpatient visit and a 1% increased chance of having an outpatient visit during anomalously warm periods compared to periods of normal weather.

Researchers estimate that over the course of follow-up, periods of anomalously warm weather were associated with an estimated excess of at least 592 emergency department visits, 1,260 inpatient visits and 1,960 outpatient visits related to MS.

«While the relative increase in risk of visits is small, the associated absolute effect on people with MS and the health care system is meaningful,» Elser said.

Limitations of the study include that the study was retrospective and that researchers had no direct way to measure peoples’ symptoms.

The study was supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
