DHR International & Harvard Business School Latino Alumni Association Launch Program to Grow Latinx Representation on Boards

CHICAGO, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Global executive search firm DHR International (DHR) is pleased to announce it has partnered with Harvard Business School Latino Alumni Association (HBSLAA) to create «21 in ’21» – a program aimed at placing 21 Latinx executives in board roles in 2021.

Only 2.7% of board members at Fortune 1000 companies are Latino; DHR to influence increased board diversity in the U.S.

Today, Hispanics represent 18% of the U.S. population, yet only 2.7% of board members at Fortune 1000 companies are Latino, according to a report by KPMG and Latino Corporate Directors Association. At the same time, research from McKinsey & Company shows that diverse firms outperform their less-diverse competitors by up to 36% in profitability.

A diversity proponent and proven resource to board decision-makers, DHR is well-positioned to support the 21 in ’21 initiative and influence a positive shift toward increased board diversity throughout the U.S. The company will engage its Latino Diversity Network of board-ready executives and its clients to bring more Latinx executives to public and private company boards across sectors.

While all industries have a need for greater diversity, the 21 in ’21 program will place a focus on the private equity sector, where Latinx representation is especially low and there is a great opportunity to effect change. Thirty Percent Coalition states on its website «sound corporate governance practices that include diversity as a priority is also rapidly becoming a prerequisite for institutional investors who represent today 80% of the equity market cap.»

«It’s an honor to partner with HBSLAA on our 21 in ’21 program, demonstrating our commitment to increasing Latinx diversity in the boardroom,» said Keith Giarman, Managing Partner, Global Private Equity Practice at DHR and an HBS alumnus. «The economic value of the U.S. Latino community in 2017 was $2.3 trillion, comparable to the world’s eighth-largest GDP in the world according to LDC Latino Donor Collaborative. This group will continue to drive the economy, and companies that understand the Latinx perspective will be poised to succeed.»

«With an increased national conversation on diversity, equity, and inclusion, we are pleased to launch 21 in ’21 in partnership with DHR,» said Lulu Curiel, President Emeritus of HBSLAA.

«By engaging HBS board-ready alumni and board decision-makers, we will move the needle on driving diversity into the boardroom,» said Melissa Hart, HBSLAA Board Member.

Leading this effort for DHR is Giarman; Christine DeYoung, Managing Partner, Commercial Growth Practice, Private Equity Practice Leader, and an HBS alumna; and Heather Smith, Partner, Global Board & CEO Practice. Working with them is Lizette Ibarra, Managing Partner of DHR’s Miami office and leader within the firm’s Diversity Practice with deep connections to the Latinx community. This team brings demonstrated success placing board directors for public and private companies across industry sectors and market capital size to drive shareholder value. They are also prominent advocates for diverse candidates, sharing their expertise to ensure more executives are board-ready.

Critically Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale Succumbs To Entanglement Wounds

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — After over 4 months of suffering severe entanglement in heavy fishing gear, an 11-year old male North Atlantic right whale nicknamed Cottontail by researchers has died off the coast of South Carolina.

<a href="https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/689318/IFAW_Logo.html" target="_blank"…

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — After over 4 months of suffering severe entanglement in heavy fishing gear, an 11-year old male North Atlantic right whale nicknamed Cottontail by researchers has died off the coast of South Carolina.

Since October, disentanglement attempts were made by both the Center for Coastal Studies and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Unsuccessful due largely to weather conditions, Cottontail’s chances of survival remained grim.

«These whales must maneuver through an industrialized waterway dense with intense shipping traffic and an estimated one million commercial vertical fishing lines in the water column. This journey to their feeding grounds, which the species has taken for centuries, is becoming a journey of no return,» said Brian Sharp, IFAW’s Director of Marine Mammal Rescue & Research.

Once numbering in the tens of thousands, less than 356 of these whales are now estimated to survive today. Driven toward extinction by human causes including entanglement and vessel collisions, the population has a limited number of reproductive females, low birth rates, and only 16 calves born this calving season. One was already the victim of a fatal vessel strike just last month.

The fishing gear was wrapped tightly around Cottontail’s head, protruding from both sides of his mouth and dragging beyond his tail. Emaciated from being unable to feed properly and with severe resulting wounds, he joins a long and growing list of whales that have succumbed to their entanglements.

IFAW leads a campaign across the US and Canada to protect this once thriving species. The group advocates for key changes including the adoption of ropeless fishing gear technology to reduce  entanglement risk; passage of critical legislation including the SAVE Right Whales Act; and increasing maritime regulations that includes stricter vessel speed restrictions.

According to IFAW Marine Campaigner CT Harry, «Cottontail’s demise is a perfect illustration of what we are trying to stop. No species can survive these types of injuries day after day. We can attempt disentanglements and the like, but that does not solve the issue. We need collective action. We need 21st century technology to remove the threat of entanglement. We need an unwavering commitment to turn this situation around.»

Sustainability Is the Top Priority in These Frozen Food Applications

CLEVELAND, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Negative perceptions about the sustainability of plastic have increased interest in eco-friendly alternative packaging materials, including paper, molded pulp, and bioplastics….

CLEVELAND, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Negative perceptions about the sustainability of plastic have increased interest in eco-friendly alternative packaging materials, including paper, molded pulp, and bioplastics. Among key applications for these value-added materials are high-end frozen food brands emphasizing healthfulness and environmental responsibility (which often go hand-in-hand in the clean-label market). For example:

  • In March 2020, Sonoco Products introduced a 100% sugarcane-based fiber bowl for refrigerated, frozen, and prepared foods. The bowl is sold under the Natrellis brand and was developed through a partnership with packaging company Tellus. Natrellis bowls will be used as the primary packaging for PRIMAL KITCHEN frozen bowl and skillet meals.
  • In January 2020, Perdue Farms began packaging some of its frozen meat products in compostable foam packaging made from cornstarch that disintegrates under running water. The packaging will initially only be used with meats purchased online and shipped directly to consumers.

In addition, many companies – including major frozen food brands and large grocery chains – have pledged to meet specific sustainability goals through the increased use of recycled post-consumer content in their packaging products. For instance, in 2020, Unilever began the European rollout of polypropylene tubs made with postconsumer mixed plastic (supplied by SABIC via its TRUCIRCLE recycling initiative) for its Magnum ice cream.

Frozen Food Packaging Demand to Near $9 Billion in 2024

US demand for frozen food packaging is forecast to increase 3.5% per year through 2024, according to a new Freedonia Group analysis. Sales will be driven by:

  • strong consumer demand for convenience foods
  • frozen food product innovations and a continuously expanding range of healthy and premium options, which often use different and higher value packaging
  • a continued reliance on frozen foods in the foodservice industry due to their longer shelf life, lower cost, and ease of preparation
  • the use of higher value packaging – including stand-up pouches, susceptor trays, and folding cartons with high-quality graphics – to help differentiate products
  • expanded availability of products in portion-controlled sizes, with smaller servings resulting in higher packaging use per product

Frozen Food Packaging is now available from the Freedonia Group. This study analyzes the market for frozen food packaging. Historical (2009, 2014 and 2019) data and forecasts to 2024 are presented in current dollars by packaging type (including all major rigid and flexible products) and application:

  • frozen specialty foods (e.g., appetizers, breakfast foods, entrees, frozen dinners, side dishes, pizzas, plant-based meat alternatives)
  • meat, poultry, and seafood, including fresh, unprepared item as well as further processed types, such as breaded poultry and seafood
  • frozen baked goods (e.g., bagels, biscuits, breads, brownies, cakes and pies, cookies, doughs and batters, pastries, tortillas)
  • fruit, vegetables, and juice (including French fries, which are considered a potato product)
  • ice cream and other frozen desserts (e.g., ice cream, yogurt, gelato, sorbet, ice cream cakes)
  • other frozen foods, including (e.g., sauces, baby food, pet food, cocktail mixers, nondairy creamers, liquid eggs, herbs, drink mixes)

Hundreds Join Women’s Forest Congress Celebration of International Women’s Day

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — To mark and recognize International Women’s Day 2021, hundreds of participants, including representatives from the private sector, academia, government, conservation organizations, landowners, and many more, came together for a virtual event to inspire, empower, and build relationships as part of a celebration organized by the Women’s Forest Congress (WFC). The more than 620 registrants came from every U.S. state and Puerto Rico, four Canadian provinces, 26 additional countries, and every continent except Antarctica.

Hundreds join Women’s Forest Congress’s celebration of International Women’s Day: Inspire, Empower, Build Relationships

The theme of International Women’s Day this year is «Choose to Challenge.» We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world, and the Women’s Forest Congress is doing its part to change the way we view and approach forests and forestry.

Attendees came together to learn about the Women’s Forest Congress’s recent efforts and what is ahead, be inspired by the work and leadership of women in natural resources, and understand how we can support each other on International Women’s Day and every day.

Dr. Antomia Farrell, Assistant Dean for Diversity at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, facilitated. She kicked things off on an upbeat note: «As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the women who have shaped our country and the forest sector.» She also challenged attendees to «…have at least one mentor and identify mentees to show them how to navigate through this thing called life.»

The event featured updates from the steering committee and working groups, news on what to watch for in 2021, an announcement of the WFC Advisory Council, and the continuation of a strong networking community.

A keynote address from Paola Deda, the Director of the Forest, Land and Housing Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), drew attention to the underrepresentation of women in forestry but offered an optimistic longer-term outlook and cited a recent Swedish study of forest ownership.

«These women see forests for what they are — not a bunch of trees that can be taken down and used to generate profit, but as part of a larger ecosystem that is worth much more to us and future generations when it thrives,» Deda said.

The importance of leadership and networking was front and center in an interactive interview with Lynn Wilson, President of WinterTide LLC, a supply chain and forest sector consulting firm, on mentor-mentee relationships. Her theme, «The power of building relationships, networking and influencing outcomes,» focused on several questions, including: What can we learn from each other? How do we move in multiple directions?

Wilson’s advice included, «Get in the driver’s seat of your career, your professional development, and your network. If you’re waiting for someone to say, ‘Wow, look at you. You’re doing a great job at this.’ I would turn that around and say, ‘How are you asking for help and networking?'»

The inaugural in-person meeting of the Women’s Forest Congress will likely be held in 2022, with virtual planning and engagement events like this being planned in the meantime. The Steering Committee wants your perspective, ideas, and guidance to ensure the Congress is a success. Learn more or email us, and join the conversation at Twitter (@WomensForestCng), Facebook (@womensforestcongress), and LinkedIn (@womens forest congress).

About the Women’s Forest Congress
The Women’s Forest Congress is a forum to develop strategies and solutions for forests through a female lens. Women throughout the forest community have come together to share personal and professional experiences, connect with other women in the community, shape the latest innovations, and consider how actions informed by the female perspective can make a profound impact on the future of forests. Forests play an intrinsic role in our lives. Forest products touch us at all stages of life and are increasingly emphasized as a central tenet of a responsible, sustainable future. Forestry is essential to us all, yet the sector has less than 20% participation by women and even less by people of color. Learn more and get in touch — we want to hear from you.

SACO, Maine, March 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — At a time when many students have turned to online learning at home, The Ecology School, a pioneer and leader in environmental education, is teaming up with Nestlé Waters North America (NWNA) and its Poland Spring® brand (Poland Spring) to provide new ways to teach and learn about ecology. Together, Poland Spring and The Ecology School are providing students with top-of-the-line, virtually accessible resources, offering a new educational institution to train ecology education leaders nationwide and developing a sustainable learning facility in the Northeast.

The Ecology School is scaling their mission of inspiring stewardship of and connection to the natural world through nature-based lessons about ecology, conservation, farming and sustainability. Thanks in part to the more than $2.3 million in support over a three-year period from Poland Spring, together they have developed:

  • EcologyOnline sponsored by Poland Spring®, an e-learning curriculum available online for all students;
  • Teacher Institute for Watershed Science and Conservation, sponsored by Poland Spring®, an experiential professional development program for teachers across the country;
  • Poland Spring® Education and Dining Commons, a recently constructed environmentally sustainable facility to foster educational experiences.

«Now more than ever, there’s a need for virtual education and training that motivates people to get outside and explore the nature in their own backyards. These expanded programs help make environmental education more accessible today, and in the future,» said Drew Dumsch, president/CEO and co-founder, The Ecology School. «Growing a national community of environmental stewards is a critical step in our mission to reset the future of people and our planet.»

«Bolstering The Ecology School’s mission to bring about a more sustainable future is part of our long-standing commitment to environmental education,» said Tara Carraro, Executive Vice President & Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Nestlé Waters North America. «Through our Poland Spring brand, we’re taking a multi-faceted approach to help expand the scale of The Ecology School so that its impact goes beyond Maine and their innovative curriculum and approach is accessible to educators, parents and students from coast-to-coast. Through our giving pillars of Water, Packaging, Health, and Climate, we will continue to support organizations that share our passion to help create the next generation of water stewards.»

When it comes to hands-on learning, COVID-19 has created additional challenges. Health precautions have forced many students to turn to online learning, limiting outdoor activities and opportunities. According to a recent survey by The Harris Poll, 73% of parents are concerned their child or children are losing knowledge due to virtual learning, and 69% of parents are concerned their child or children aren’t getting enough exercise or time outside during the pandemic. To help ensure that students are able to advance their learning in healthy and productive ways, The Ecology School’s new, virtual learning resources aim to get children and families outside to engage with nature and the environment.

As a proactive means to address the increasing learning gap for children, Poland Spring brand and The Ecology School are providing three new online and in-person approaches for teaching and learning about ecology.

EcologyOnline. The new online e-learning platform, EcologyOnline sponsored by Poland Spring, provides five learning modules as a curriculum designed by experts at The Ecology School and its educatiosnal partners. Each module contains an educational skit, at least three outdoor-focused activities, and action steps for real world application. Unlike most e-learning programs, EcologyOnline invites students to get out from behind the computer and take their learning outdoors, no matter their learning environment. The curriculum’s online deployment paired with outside activities is focused on inclusivity across rural, urban and suburban areas. EcologyOnline is now available through EcologyOnline.org.

The Teacher Institute for Watershed Science and Conservation, sponsored by Poland Spring, has been created for the sole purpose of recruiting and training more environmental stewards and educators. Starting in August 2021, the institute will welcome K-8 teachers from across the country to The Ecology School’s River Bend Farm campus in Maine for a four-day, hands-on educational program. Poland Spring is collaborating with The Ecology School to help ensure the program is available to teachers from communities where NWNA operates. Through a variety of outdoor-focused learning sessions, teachers will learn more about how to adopt more sustainable practices and how to inspire the next generation to participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Over the course of three years, the program projects to enroll over 280 teachers in the institute. A key component of the program is its ability to provide financial aid to ensure that more teachers are able to join. Additionally, the Teacher Institute for Watershed Science and Conservation will provide teachers with 15 hours towards Continuing Education Units through the University of Southern Maine, an accredited university. Applicants can learn more or apply here.

The Poland Spring® Education and Dining Commons, named one of the most sustainable buildings in the Northeast was constructed to help create a campus that models conservation-in-action with 200 rooftop solar panels, kitchen equipment that is 20% more efficient, LED lighting, skylights and composite wooden beams instead of steel. The 7,000 square-foot building features one of the few large-scale combustion-less, net-positive commercial production kitchens worldwide. The facility also uses sustainable processes like composting, water reclamation and waste reduction. Additionally, The Ecology School anticipates growing 100% of the produce served at meals through its onsite agroecology farm by 2025. The building also uses local Maine products such as Forest Stewardship Council certified Maine white pine boards. Poland Spring and The Ecology School will continue to work together to help ensure the Poland Spring Education and Dining Commons continues to set a standard in sustainable facilities.

Poland Spring and The Ecology School have a nearly 20-year relationship, during which they’ve worked together to help educate Mainers. With the help of these new programs, their local efforts will now be expanded to students and teachers across the country.
