NEW YORK, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Nielsen’s latest Diverse Intelligence Series consumer report, Cultural Connectivity Transformed: How Latinos are connecting while social distancing, explores how the Latino community is connecting through the COVID-19 pandemic.

As one of the groups to feel the disproportionate effects of job loss and health impacts during the COVID-19 pandemic, Latinos have come to rely on media and social channels more than ever to educate, inform, and entertain. And although this group continues to face significant challenges, they are not buckling under pressure. Instead, they are tapping into their collectivist culture and virtual social networks to stay connected, weathering the storm by tapping into their resilient roots.

The report demonstrates how trusted influencers, brands, and media are leveraged both pre-COVID and during the pandemic, to keep Latinos engaged, entertained, but most importantly, informed. Data indicates that these networks will remain the trusted conduits for information transfer within the Latino community for the post-pandemic recovery.

Latinos continue to be key factors in stimulating the country’s economy with their immense buying power, which increased by 69% in just nine years, outpacing non-Hispanics, which increased by 41% during the same time.

«Hispanics are a collectivist culture, placing strong value on the needs of the community as a whole and maintaining close connections with each other. As COVID-19 began to spread, the subsequent social distancing measures threatened the in-person social networks that Latinos relied upon,» said Stacie de Armas, Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Consumer Engagement. «The Latino community has long exhibited an outsized use of digital connections, however as a result of the circumstances of COVID-19, Latinos intensified their use of digital platforms to a greater degree than the total market, including use of social media and trusted content channels such as TV and radio to inform, communicate, share experiences and seek support.»

Key insights from the Diverse Intelligence Series report include:

The U.S. Hispanic population frequently makes headlines for its growth and for being a key contributor to the economy, labor force, and the electorate.

  • Latinos will be the primary contributors to total U.S. population growth for the next 40 years, comprising 53% of the growth in the next five years and 68% of the growth up to 2060.
  • Latinos will contribute more growth than any other population segment, a factor compounded by a projected growth decline among the non-Hispanic white population.
  • In 2019, Hispanics accounted for $1.7 trillion in buying power, which is 11% of the total buying power of the U.S.

Multigenerational households are the nexus of the Hispanic community.

  • Hispanics are 40% more likely to live in multigenerational households, and the median age of their households is only 29, compared to 38 years of age in non-Hispanic U.S. households.
  • Over the next ten years, the disproportionately younger Latino community will over contribute based on their relative size to the economic recovery, through home purchases and the acquisition of goods and services.

Latinos choose content that is trusted and speaks to them culturally first, regardless of language.

  • Latinos are increasingly connecting with their trusted networks through social media. Latinos are 57% more likely to use social media as a primary source of information about COVID-19.
  • More than one-third of Hispanics spent more time listening to the radio as a result of COVID-19 (37%) compared with only 24% of white non-Hispanics.
  • Another 48% of Latinos reported that listening to their favorite radio host helped them feel more informed and less stressed.

As COVID-19 news and health information began to dominate our everyday lives, the mobile phone became a mainstay of connectivity.

  • 98% of the total U.S Hispanic population owns one, and they spend over 30 hours a week on a smartphone.
  • Although there was a similar number of Spanish language news and talk shows airing in the category and time period from 2019 to 2020, we see a 71% increase in social media activity around those programs vs. the year prior. Social media activity around English language primetime news and talk only increased by 17%.
  • The smartphone serves as a conduit for Latino essential workers to stay in touch with their families, networks, and trusted information sources. Knowing the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 in Latino communities, 61% of Hispanics say they have been watching or listening to the news more often, compared with 54% of non-Hispanics.

Video games have come to the forefront of stay-at-home activities for Hispanics during the pandemic.

  • Hispanic gamers use gaming consoles to stream a variety of content such as gamer commentaries, reviews, live streams and news.
  • 31% of all Hispanics say they have increased their time spent playing video games online or on a gaming device since the outbreak.
  • 8 in 10 Hispanic gamers say they have used their mobile device to play video games in the past three months.

«Hispanics rely upon their physical and digital networks as conduits of information, underscoring the interdependence of collectivism and social networks. These networks serve more than just a social appetite; they serve as the conduit of trust, truth and cultural connection,» said Stacie de Armas.

DATAMARK Selected by Maine for NG9-1-1 GIS Data Enhancement

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — DATAMARK, the public safety GIS team of Michael Baker International, announces that the Maine…

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — DATAMARK, the public safety GIS team of Michael Baker International, announces that the Maine Public Utilities Commission, Emergency Services Communication Bureau has selected the firm for Next-Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) geographic information system (GIS) data enhancement. This work will be critical as the state moves toward a statewide, comprehensive GIS address point layer and road centerline layer that meet and exceed the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSDI).  The project includes a review of existing road centerline data and existing structure location data to spatially adjust the geometries to meet national standards and to provide a mechanism for the remediation of missing/incomplete/incorrect address location data and/or attributes. The project commenced in June 2020 and is expected to last through February 2022.

«Our team consists of leaders in the complex technical areas of GIS, public safety and NG9-1-1, all of whom have extensive experience executing large-scale NG9-1-1 GIS data enhancement projects,» said  Chris Friel, Director of Strategic Accounts at DATAMARK, Michael Baker International. «Our data-forward, full-service – yet configurable – solutions will provide the highest levels of public safety GIS data completeness and accuracy for the State of Maine’s NG9-1-1 services.»

The project will improve Maine’s GIS data statewide to meet the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) recommendation for the horizontal accuracy of GIS data layers. The DATAMARK team will update the existing NG9-1-1 1 road centerline dataset to a more spatially accurate LiDAR-derived road dataset while keeping all the attributes and topological relationships of the linear features.  Positional Accuracy Improvement (PAI) rules will be configured to align the NG9-1-1 road centerline dataset to the LiDAR-generated dataset. The PAI process consists of performing the change detection, including matching, between the LiDAR generated and NG9-1-1 datasets.  The matched and reshaped features will be shifted to align to the LiDAR dataset while still maintaining topological integrity.

DATAMARK will use two proprietary software solutions throughout this project:

  • Address Comparison and Evaluation (ACE): ACE technology will compare Maine’s master address sources to other sources containing address points (i.e., trash records, parcels, utility databases, etc.) and will identify address candidates not within the master address data source.
  • Validation Edit Provision (VEP): DATAMARK’s VEP Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution improves public safety communication, location precision and ensures the data meets the stringent NG9-1-1 requirements. The data validation tools are built on the NENA NG9-1-1 GIS database schema and will help to improve Maine’s data after spatial realignment. They will improve the state’s street centerline and address point GIS data using VEP to execute iterative validation checks. The VEP validation engine allows administrators to run hundreds of specific data validations that guide data remediation efforts to improve the quality and completeness of the GIS data.

DATAMARK will work in conjunction with partners Quantum Spatial and 1Spatial throughout the project.

Hypomorphic Genetic Variants Associated With Childhood Chronic Loose Stools

VERO BEACH, Fla., Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — QOL Medical, LLC today announced that PLoS ONE has published the results from a study of hypomorphic SI (sucrase-isomaltase) genetic variants known to cause Congenital Sucrase-Isomaltase Deficiency (CSID). The results show children with a hypomorphic SI variant had more serious gastrointestinal symptoms than those without.

The 18-center study of 308 non-Hispanic white children was designed to assess the prevalence of CSID-associated SI variants relative to the general population and the gastrointestinal symptoms associated with a known SI genotype within the study population.

Children with CSID, commonly known as Sucrose (sugar) Intolerance, have chronic diarrhea because they are unable to properly digest sucrose (table sugar), which is found in foods such as ice cream, apples, cake, and corn.

In adolescents and adults, CSID has been characterized by symptoms of chronic loose stools and diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas, and periodic nausea, which overlap with common irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. In infants, CSID classically presents as explosive watery diarrhea, failure to thrive, diaper rash, irritability, and acidic stools.

«Results from this study reinforce the importance of testing children with chronic loose stools for CSID,» said Derick Cooper, CEO of QOL Medical, LLC. «We are hopeful these findings will translate into more awareness and testing for pediatric patients who face daily challenges with this disease.»

Tootris Launches Innovative School Aged Learning Hubs Program In Advance Of School Closures

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — TOOTRiS, the fastest growing tech-enabled service provider connecting parents to high-quality Child Care, today announced Learning Hubs, a Child Care program for school-aged children aimed at solving distance learning challenges. Working parents are concerned about juggling work…

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — TOOTRiS, the fastest growing tech-enabled service provider connecting parents to high-quality Child Care, today announced Learning Hubs, a Child Care program for school-aged children aimed at solving distance learning challenges. Working parents are concerned about juggling work responsibilities and managing their childrens’ remote school days, while their employers are worried about absenteeism and workforce productivity. In direct response, TOOTRiS is expanding its real-time 0-5 aged Child-Care services to support parents as they face the challenge to provide school aged children with academic supervision and assistance in this new distant learning era.

TOOTRiS is leveraging their network of more 4,000 licensed and credentialed Child Care providers who have remained open for business during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Learning Hubs empower providers to take on school-aged children and leverage their already nurturing programs to provide a contained, safe and structured small group environment, not to exceed 8 children per CDC guidelines.

TOOTRiS is partnering with the employer community to stand up and subsidize on-site Learning Hubs as an extension to their benefits program.  Employers recognize that now more than ever they need to support their workforce to solve their childcare challenges if they expect employees to get back to productivity levels.

«Workforce productivity starts with Work/Life balance. Our economy will not recover unless the employer community recognizes their imperative role in helping to solve this Child Care crisis,» said Alessandra Lezama, CEO of TOOTRiS. «Learning Hubs ensures that children are getting appropriate supervision and a renewed sense of normalcy to help them navigate the challenges of virtual classrooms.»

With Governor Newsom’s remote learning mandate for the start of the 2020-21 school year, Learning Hubs are a Win-Win-Win Solution for children, parents, and employers. Other cities like San Francisco recognize the importance and immense value of the Learning Hubs concept to working parents and their children.  The Department of Children, Youth and Their Families recently announced that it will similarly transform some public facilities for high need San Francisco Unified School District students, into Learning Hubs starting this fall. Maria Su, Executive Director of SFDCYF, said, «We need to make sure that families do not have to choose between working and taking care of their children.»

To learn more about Learning Hubs and how employers can implement Child Care as a Benefit, go to tootris.com/learninghubs for complete program information and details.

NEW YORK, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Telehealth claim lines1 increased 5,680 percent nationally from 0.15 percent of medical claim lines in May 2019 to 8.69 percent in May 2020, according to new data from FAIR Health’s Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker. Although substantial, that increase was less than the year-to-year increase the previous month, when telehealth claim lines increased 8,336 percent nationally from 0.15 percent of medical claim lines in April 2019 to 13.00 percent in April 2020.The data represent the privately insured population, excluding Medicare and Medicaid.

Against the backdrop of the year-to-year increase, telehealth claim lines fell 33 percent nationally from 13.00 percent of medical claim lines in April 2020 to 8.69 percent in May 2020.

The four US census regions (Midwest, Northeast, South and West) all showed trends similar to the nation as a whole. In each region, there were large percent increases in volume of claim lines from May 2019 to May 2020, but these increases were smaller than the increases from April 2019 to April 2020. In addition, in each region, there was a drop in volume of claim lines from April to May 2020. The biggest drop was in the South, where the decrease from April to May was 40 percent, from 9.81 percent of medical claim lines to 5.87 percent.

Higher telehealth utilization from March to May 2020 by comparison with the same months in 2019 suggests the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In March and April, many states prohibited elective procedures and non-emergency medical care when rendered in person, making telehealth an attractive alternative. Many of these prohibitions expired in May as states began to open up, perhaps accounting for the drop in the telehealth share of total medical claim lines that month relative to April. Nevertheless, the pandemic continued and telehealth usage remained high by comparison with 2019.

Other notable findings of the Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker concern the top five telehealth diagnoses:

  • Mental health conditions, already the number one telehealth diagnosis nationally and in every region in April 2020, accounted for an even larger share of telehealth claim lines in May 2020. Nationally, this diagnosis increased from 34 percent to 40 percent of telehealth claim lines from April to May 2020. In May 2020, it constituted 40 percent or more of telehealth claim lines in every region but the South, whereas in April 2020 it did so only in the Midwest.
  • In May 2020, developmental disorders ranked among the top five telehealth diagnoses in all regions and nationally, whereas in April 2020 this diagnosis was in the top five in only one region (the West). In May 2019, it was not in the top five in any region. The COVID-19 pandemic appears to be driving the movement toward more use of telehealth in this area.

Launched in May as a free service, the Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker uses FAIR Health data to track how telehealth is evolving. An interactive map of the four US census regions allows the user to view an infographic on telehealth in a specific month in each region, or in the nation as a whole. In addition to data on the volume of claim lines and on diagnoses, each infographic includes findings on urban versus rural usage and the top five telehealth procedure codes.

FAIR Health President Robin Gelburd stated: «COVID-19 is having a pronounced impact on telehealth, but the specifics of that impact vary from month to month. MARINA DEL REY, Calif., Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Fast Company announced its 11th annual list of the Most Creative People in Business, honoring Bite Toothpaste Bits CEO and Founder, Lindsay McCormick among an influential and diverse group of leaders from a vast range of global industries.

The Most Creative People in Business list recognizes individuals who used their innovative thinking to make an impact on the world beyond financial success. These engineers, executives, choreographers, activists, designers, journalists, and founders have created something new this year within their field that’s never been done before in their industries. Many achieved these societal problem-solving accomplishments in one of the most contentious and erratic times in history.

«I’m honored to be included in such an inspiring group of people, all working to create meaningful and impactful change in our world,» said McCormick. «There has never been a more important time for us to come together to find new and innovative solutions to our environmental problems. I never set out to create a business, but the success of what we’ve grown at Bite has give me the power to share my story and the urgency to save our planet. We’ve only just begun…» said McCormick.

As Bite’s CEO and Founder, Lindsay McCormick started Bite in her living room after learning about the one billion plastic toothpaste tubes that end up in our landfills and oceans every year. Once a social media video went viral, sales skyrocketed overnight and McCormick quit her full-time job to launch Bite into a multimillion company. McCormick’s love of the planet, urgency to make a difference, and personal mission to create sustainable solutions to products we use every day has now become Bite’s mission.

Since Bite’s inception in 2018, the company has become a trailblazer in the sustainability and personal care space with its innovative and plastic-free products made with the planet in mind. From creating the first-ever toothpaste tablet with nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) to Bite’s recent launch of 100% compostable and plant-based dental floss, McCormick’s team is working to make conscious consumerism an unconscious decision.

Fast Company editors and writers spent a year researching candidates for the list, scouting every business sector: social good, medical, technology, engineering, marketing, entertainment, startups, and more. The people selected have all accomplished something truly innovative within the past 12 months or so that is having a measurable effect within their industries and beyond. They’re also discoveries—none has ever been profiled in Fast Company in print before. Together, they represent the future of business.

«Each year, we recognize artists and conventionally creative people making their mark on business and corporate executives deploying creativity and innovation to address some of the biggest challenges facing businesses and society,» says Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. «Individually and collectively, the Most Creative People are an inspiration.»

Virtual Platform and App Revolutionizes Healthcare, Education and Careers

MILWAUKEE, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — CV Academics Foundation, a new non-profit organization, announces the launch of its academic and career development platform app to address the current shortages in the patient care workforce and forge accessible pathways to healthcare careers. The Foundation’s flagship program, American Medical Pathway Honors Program (AMP HP), has been in beta testing for the past twelve months for student learners in Wisconsin. Testing has included rural, urban, and global settings as well both public and private schools. AMP HP has received accolades from its beta learners for introducing engaging learning opportunities, creating a resource for career exploration in healthcare, and providing real world experiences and best practices from healthcare leaders through community networks.

«Students who join the platform become part of a community, gain first-hand insights into many healthcare professional pathways, and build their network of connections and experiences,» said Dr. Andy Klein, AMP HP Co-founder. «We are addressing challenges in academic access and workforce development that have been made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are seeing positive results.»

According to the Wisconsin Council on Medical Education & Workforce (WCMEDW) 2018 report, the growing demand for primary care providers is driven by an expanding and aging population which will outpace supply. Existing approaches to education and training are largely uncoordinated and do not provide a comprehensive solution to the impending workforce shortages. WCMEDW also notes that many communities have limited access to advanced coursework, medical care, food, and employment opportunities, which continue to daunt students.

The mission of CV Academics Foundation is to provide students of all backgrounds, living in rural and urban areas, access to academic and career development opportunities to aid in achieving their professional goals. The Foundation works with professional organizations and educational institutions, forming crucial partnerships to maintain the platform’s exclusive content in a variety of healthcare careers.

This new academic and career development platform connects students with mentors, evidence and science-based resources, peer-to-peer group discussions, and tailored curriculum. Students anywhere can access the resource by using a sophisticated first-of-its-kind approach and technology. AMP HP enhances the traditional education model by digitally connecting students and professionals across the globe to build a competitive resume, right from home.

CV Academics Foundation works with sponsors and learning partners to develop specialized curriculum and diverse learning experiences to help students build a foundation of professional development. Key features of the platform include: «Career Highlights,» «Volunteer & Shadowing,» «What’s on Tap,» and «Life of a Professional.» Super Mentors, comprised of dedicated undergraduate and graduate students, and young professionals, offer peer-to-peer advice and guidance for education and career pathways.

«AMP is amazing,» said Dharsha, a beta site freshman student! «I joined because I wanted to know more about the journey to med school, and the necessary steps I would have to take to get into a college that is right for me. I would highly recommend AMP to any student looking to gain more knowledge about the healthcare world and the different opportunities within the field. This platform has great mentors willing to answer any questions you have…it provides students with a great supportive community to discover your passions within healthcare. I look forward to seeing you on the site!»

CV Academics Foundation is working with high schools, undergraduate institutions, and non-traditional students to help integrate the platform into their existing educational offerings. Students, however, do not need to attend a member school in order to engage with the platform. With the assistance of sponsor support, scholarships and financial aid are offered to individual students and schools looking to enroll. As the Foundation continues to grow and expand their healthcare offerings, they are planning an emergence of new professional pathways like legal, business, and engineering on the platform.
