Internova Travel Execs Take Historic Flight to Test Digital Health Pass

NEW YORK, Oct. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In a global initiative to enable safer air and cross-border travel, Internova Travel Group joined The Commons Project Foundation in successfully testing its CommonPass digital health pass for travelers to document their verified COVID-19 test status on a transatlantic flight.

In a global initiative to enable safer air and cross-border travel, Internova Travel Group (including CEO J.D. O'Hara, top) joined The Commons Project Foundation in successfully testing its CommonPass digital health pass for travelers to document their verified COVID-19 test status on a transatlantic flight.

The successful international trial of CommonPass, tested on a flight from London to New York, was led by Internova executives J.D. O’Hara, CEO; Peter Vlitas, Senior Vice President, Airline Relations; Jason Oshiokpekhai, Managing Director, Global Travel Collection (GTC); and Arif Kamal, Director of Revenue Management, GTC. The purpose of the trip was to establish the viability of a verified «digital health pass,» which provides a global framework for lab results and vaccination records to be verified and shared with border control.

Internova has been working closely with The Commons Project and the World Economic Forum to find a long-term solution to replace travel bans and quarantines with the ability to verify individual health and test result data while maintaining privacy standards.

The executives traveled Oct. 21 on United Airlines Flight 15 from London Heathrow to Newark Liberty International Airport. Prior to departure, they downloaded the CommonPass app, answered screening questions and took a COVID-19 test at the airport. A negative test result generated a digital health pass via a QR code, which allowed them to board the flight at London-Heathrow Airport.

«The ability to verify health information in a secure, verified manner will allow countries and regions to open borders and restart the travel industry along with the economic activity that comes with it,» said O’Hara. «This CommonPass pilot demonstrates that we have a means of enabling safer cross-border travel by giving both travelers and governments confidence in the COVID-19 status of every traveler.»

O’Hara said his commitment to finding safer ways to restart travel fueled his interest in participating in the transatlantic trial to experience the viability of the process. He described the experience as «easy to understand, quick and efficient,» adding, «I consider the trial a resounding success and feel sure that travelers will soon have the confidence to get back in the air in a safe and secure manner.»

Paul Meyer, CEO at the Commons Project, stated, «The goal of the trials is to replicate the full traveler experience of taking a test for COVID-19 prior to departure, uploading the result to their phones, and demonstrating their compliance with entry requirements at their departure and destination airports. The digital health pass allows countries and regions seeking ways to ‘thoughtfully reopen’ their borders an alternative to travel bans and quarantines.»

At present, COVID-19 test results for travel are frequently shared on printed paper – or photos of the paper – from unknown labs, often written in languages foreign to those inspecting them.

«It’s critical that we find safe ways to reopen travel. Travel and tourism accounts for 10 percent of global GDP, or nearly $9 trillion. A verifiable and standardized way to share test or vaccine status on an international scale is critical to restoring confidence in our air transportation system,» said Internova’s Vlitas. «The safety of its citizens is paramount to any government’s decision to replace quarantines with testing. We are at a point that effective testing, a reliable medical registry, such as CommonPass, combined with contact tracing done by travel advisors can offer that solution.»

CommonPass adheres to tight privacy principles and is designed to protect personal data in compliance with relevant privacy regulations, including General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

«Without the ability to trust COVID-19 tests – and eventually vaccine records – across international borders, many countries will feel compelled to retain full travel bans and mandatory quarantines for as long as the pandemic persists,» said Dr. Bradley Perkins, Chief Medical Officer of The Commons Project and former Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). «With trusted individual health data, countries can implement more nuanced health screening requirements for entry.»

CommonPass and the CommonPass Framework are being launched by the World Economic Forum and The Commons Project, a Swiss-based non-profit foundation building global digital services and platforms for the common good, in collaboration with a broad coalition of public and private partners around the world, including government representatives from 37 countries across six continents. The nonprofit received start-up funding from the Rockefeller Foundation.

The volunteers involved in the United Airlines trial adhered to all entry and testing rules. At London Heathrow, tests from private testing company Prenetics were administered by the travel and medical services firm Collinson in the dedicated COVID-19 testing facilities set up with their partner Swissport.

United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are observing the trials.

Cox Automotive COVID-19 Research: Pandemic Concerns Wane, Displaced by Politics

ATLANTA, Oct. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Despite rising COVID-19 cases in many states, concerns about the pandemic seem to be waning and, in many cases, are being replaced by concern over the upcoming presidential election. Among U.S. automobile dealers, 43% believe COVID-19 and the upcoming election are both equally concerning, according to a study released today by the Cox Automotive Research & Market Intelligence team.

Pandemic concern peaked in the second quarter and has been moving steadily downward since summer. Still, with 61% of consumers extremely or very concerned about COVID-19, the pandemic and resulting economic struggles continue to weigh heavily on the vehicle market. The most recent data from Cox Automotive indicates the percent of consumers in market for a new vehicle, at 14%, has dropped to the lowest level in 2020.

«COVID-19: Tracking U.S. Consumer and Automotive Dealer Sentiment» is ongoing research from Cox Automotive designed to shed light on consumer and automobile dealer attitudes and behaviors during the pandemic. The research began in late March and has been updated regularly through mid-October. Key takeaways from the latest report include:

  1. Consumer concern over COVID-19 continues to decline. Concern over the pandemic peaked in April, with 71% of consumers extremely/very concerned. After dropping through the summer, consumer concern now stands at a still-high 61%. Financial concerns persist for many consumers as well, resulting in fewer shoppers in market. The auto market rebound that dealers were experiencing this summer has stalled.

  2. As the presidential election approaches, it’s occupying more mindshare with both consumers and dealers. Among auto dealers, 43% believe COVID-19 and the upcoming election are both equally concerning. In no great surprise, consumers are mostly split on how the outcome will impact them personally. Dealers are more definitive, with a larger percentage expecting better financial performance should the current administration prevail in the election.

  3. Uncertainty around COVID-19 continues to drive financial concern for many consumers and has amplified the need to evolve for some dealers. The prospect of another year like 2020 has consumers concerned for their financial stability, with 1 in 5 depleting their savings in 2021 should the pandemic continue. For dealers, it’s clear they are more open to considering new ways of doing business than ever before. Three out of four dealers are now conducting some of their business beyond their dealerships, embracing digital retail and service pick-up and delivery activities.

Mitsubishi Motors Dealer Partner Spotlight – McClinton Mitsubishi on Coming Home to Carry on a Legacy

FRANKLIN, Tenn., Oct. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is celebrating dealer partners who go above and beyond for their communities. They provide more than just a great place to buy a car – they help their home towns thrive in the good times and heal in the challenging times. They rise to the occasion in support of the community, whatever the occasion may be. This month, we are proud to feature Ginny McClinton-Bowden, dealer principal of McClinton Mitsubishi.

Five Questions with Ginny McClinton Bowden
McClinton Mitsubishi, Parkersburg, West Virginia

  1. If we walked into McClinton Mitsubishi today, we might be greeted by one of your 25 plus employees, or we might be greeted by the shop dogs – Cotton and Mavis. Tell us about them! Cotton and Mavis love going to work! More importantly, the employees and customers love having them there. We nicknamed Cotton «The Closer.» Cotton is an English Cocker Spaniel. She has an infectious personality and wiggles her entire body when she greets people. She’s great with kids and makes everyone feel comfortable and happy. Mavis, on the other hand, is much more laid back and usually finds a cozy spot under someone’s desk. Mavis is an English Labrador Retriever. Our furry family is growing – Mavis just had six puppies six weeks ago. We are keeping one pup and her name is Rebel. Rebel is the smallest of the litter, but holds her own and manages to find weak spots in the fence to get out. Never a dull moment at McClinton Mitsubishi!

  2. McClinton Auto Group was started by your great grandfather 105 years ago. Today, you are the dealer principal, your father owns the business, and your husband is the general manager. What does carrying on the family business mean to you? Our motto is A Tradition of Trust. It is because of my family’s integrity, honesty and hard work that we have made it to 105 years. My father never wanted me to feel pressure to take over the family business. He wanted me to experience life on my own and work different jobs in different locations before deciding to return to Parkersburg and take on this challenge. My husband, Wyn, and I made the decision together four years ago to move back to WV from Arkansas, Wyn’s home state. It is an honor and a privilege to be given this opportunity and it is with great pride that we do our best to fill my father, grandfather and great grandfather’s shoes. We owe it to my family, the community, the employees and ourselves to continue this tradition of trust.

  3. You treat your staff like family, because they are family! How have you been able to navigate together through the COVID-19 pandemic? It has certainly been an interesting and difficult year to say the least. There is no playbook for this. All individuals, companies and businesses are taking it one day at a time, as are we. We are fortunate to have a great team of people whom many have been with us for 20+ years. The statement «we will get through this together» holds true for us. Our company has made it through a lot of challenging times over the years – The Great Depression, WWII, 1980s crash, 9/11 and 2008 crash, to name a few. We do not accept the mentality of «that’s not my job.» We all work together, and get things done. I have learned quickly that the people in the auto industry wear many hats and roll with the punches. We spend a lot of time together at the dealership and do what we can to support one another through the thick and thin.

  4. In many ways, you represent the next generation of automobile dealers. What advice do you have for other young professionals, busy at work and at home, who are looking to get into this industry? That is a great question! The industry is changing at a rapid pace. I have spent much of my past three years trying to bring my family’s dealership up to speed with the rest of the industry. We have tried to mesh old school with new school to the best of our ability. It is my goal to stay ahead of the eight ball and be the dealership that sets the tone for our community and how they buy and service their vehicles. My advice to someone interested in the automobile industry is to be ready to give it your all. It’s exciting, stressful, challenging, invigorating and can provide you and your family a wonderful life. The sky is the limit, but you have to want it, and you have to work hard for it.

  5. Parkersburg is a tight-knit community, and McClinton Mitsubishi has been part of the fabric for a very long time. How are you working to address the current and future needs of the community, and why is this important to you? The very first thing that comes to mind is that we wouldn’t be in business this long without this tight-knit community. We are so proud of 105 years in business and are very aware of the importance of serving this community. We thank them for their many years of support and trust. For most people, their vehicle is one of the biggest and most important purchases of their life! We want their experience to be enjoyable and comfortable. We believe the only way to accomplish this is to treat people with the respect they deserve and provide them with the reassurance that we will take care of them and all of their vehicle needs.

Earnhardt Volkswagen Announces VW 2020 and 2021 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport Awarded Highest Safety Rating From NHTSA

GILBERT, Ariz., Oct. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Earnhardt Volkswagen is pleased to announce that two more of its vehicles have earned the coveted 5-star safety rating from the federal New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). The 2020 and 2021 Volkswagen Atlas and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport join the growing list of Volkswagens with this designation.

«Already our Golf and Jetta models have earned the same five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NCAP,» said Paul Fox, General Manager of Earnhardt Volkswagen. «It is important to the Earnhardt Volkswagen family that these two SUVs not only passed the NHTSA crash tests, but also aced them.»

Similar in size, these two midsize SUVs are slightly different in purpose. The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport seats five while the Volkswagen Atlas seats seven.

The NHTSA testing affirmed that such things as the VW safety cage, crumple zones, and airbags work as safely as possible. This was also further confirmation that VW’s exclusive feature, automatic post-crash braking, helps protect lives. Six different VW models now claim the five-star distinction, further affirming the brand’s commitment to safety.

«It is interesting to note that the five-star designation doesn’t even take into account the long list of crash avoidance features offered on a VW today,» said Christopher Kerr, Corporate Vice President of Marketing for Earnhardt Auto Centers. «The two SUVs offer lane assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and many other ways to keep you out of an accident.»

Furthermore, the testing also doesn’t recognize other important safety features. For instance, each Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport comes with standard rain-sensing windshield wipers and heated side mirrors. Plus, VW’s exclusive Intelligent Crash Response System unlocks the doors, turns on interior lights and hazard lights, and disables the engine and major electric systems.

«Frankly, whether you judge by ratings, standard equipment, or advanced technology, VW is one of the safest brands on the road,» said Fox. «It’s also a good deal when you combine a great product like the VW Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport with Earnhardt’s No Bull Express buying experience. I’d say VW is the BEST deal on the road today, no bull.»
