EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., Jan. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Repair and construction of the water reservoirs in Saratov, Russia was completed in December 2020. Penetron crystalline waterproofing products were applied to repair and restore the reinforced concrete structures.

Saratov is a major port and industrial center on the Volga River with about 840,000 inhabitants. Located in southern Russia, the city has a continental climate with hot and dry summers and prodigious amounts of snow and ice during the cold winters.

Due to aging and deterioration of the city’s water supply infrastructure, a comprehensive repair project for the drinking water reservoirs was recently completed. The first phase of the Saratov Reservoir project comprised the repair of two concrete reservoirs, each holding 22,000 m3 of drinking water.

Permanent Corrosion Protection
In the initial step, the Penetron repair team routed out all leaking construction joints, visible cracks and leaks, and cut back any exposed rebar stubs and damaged concrete. PENECRETE MORTAR was then applied to the prepared areas. In addition, to protect the reinforced concrete structures from further water penetration due to the high hydrostatic pressure, PENETRON, a topical crystalline material, was applied as a slurry to permanently waterproof the concrete surfaces.

Once applied to a prepared concrete surface, the proprietary chemicals in Penetron’s crystalline products react in a catalytic reaction with moisture to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. The resulting formation seals pores and micro-cracks, and becomes an integral part of the matrix, making the concrete impermeable. PENETRON-treated concrete has the added benefit of preventing further freeze-thaw cycle damage from occurring. This increases the lifespan of the concrete structure and reduces the amount of maintenance required in the future – a substantial advantage in Russia where the winters get very cold and freeze-thaw cycle damage is prevalent.

Completely Non-Toxic Waterproofing Treatment
«An important aspect for water storage applications is that all Penetron crystalline products are completely non-toxic and contain no VOCs,» explains Igor Chernogolov, President of Penetron Russia. «Our crystalline materials are nationally certified (equivalent to the NSF-61 certification in the US) for use in potable water applications in Russia. The Penetron System is ideal for waterproofing concrete that comes into contact with drinking water.»

The next stage for the Saratov water storage project is the reconstruction of the reservoirs’ pumping station in 2021. The Penetron System has been approved as the concrete waterproofing solution for this work. We will report on the project later this year.
