Cuando estaba por cursar el tercer año de secundaria, su tío le propuso a él y a sus primos venir a la capital en busca de una mejor educación y mayores oportunidades de desarrollo. Sabía que adquirir conocimiento era la única manera de salir adelante. Ya en Lima, Max y sus primos empezaron a vivir en una misma casa con apoyo económico de sus padres y familiares. Con mucho esfuerzo, finalmente lo logró, pudo ingresar a una universidad reconocida y estudiar aquello que desde tan chico le gustaba: Ciencias Biológicas.

El camino como biólogo

La pasión de Max por la biología fue aumentando a medida que estudiaba en la universidad. Analizando a los seres vivos, se dio cuenta que si se observaban los mecanismos que funcionan en la naturaleza desde hace miles de años, se podía llegar a encontrar soluciones tecnológicas para afrontar problemas actuales: desde emular el mecanismo de almacenamiento de energía de las anguilas eléctricas para obtener baterías, hasta imitar el movimiento de las aves para crear la cámara GoPro.

Le encantaba estar en el laboratorio y hacer diferentes ensayos por largas horas. Le tomó tres años culminar su tesis de licenciatura sobre celdas solares que hacían uso de pigmentos de un microorganismo termófilo, para asegurar que los paneles sean más resistentes y así evitar su deterioro. Su esmero y esfuerzo tuvo como recompensa el obtener una beca del Gobierno Peruano para hacer una estancia científica en la Universidad de Costa Rica en la facultad de Electroquímica y Energía Química, en donde logró desarrollar un proyecto sobre energía solar orgánica.

Para Max, la ciencia y la tecnología son importantes para poder impulsar y obtener proyectos exitosos que marquen una diferencia en vida de las gentes. “Es en la naturaleza en donde se encuentran las respuestas y de donde pueden surgir grandes ideas”, asegura.

Sin embargo, afirma que la falta de apoyo de organismos e instituciones durante el proceso de emprendimiento es notable, por lo que existen proyectos innovadores que se quedan tan solo en la etapa de investigación, sin la posibilidad de ponerse en práctica para el beneficio de la sociedad.

La unión de varias disciplinas es clave

El sueño más grande de Max era ser un investigador neto y hacer trabajos de campo para conocer de cerca las distintas problemáticas en el medio ambiente. Cuando estaba en la universidad, participó en un concurso en donde se debían crear soluciones viables a problemas reales de empresas.

En aquella ocasión, Max y su equipo crearon una válvula que imitaba al corazón humano para poder identificar conexiones clandestinas del servicio de agua potable; llegaron hasta la etapa final de este concurso, en la cual debían crear modelos de negocios, sin embargo, al ser un equipo especializado en el campo de la investigación científica, no lograron elaborar un modelo con la visión comercial necesaria para el concurso. Fue así como Max comprendió que, si bien la investigación científica era esencial, también necesitaba contar con personas de distintas áreas para poder lograr un mejor resultado en futuros proyectos. Es así como decidió formar un equipo multidisciplinario que compartiera la misma pasión por el bienestar social y ambiental. Joven Campeón de la Tierra

El Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) reconoció a Max Hidalgo como uno de los Jóvenes Campeones de la Tierra 2020, galardón ambiental de la ONU para la nueva generación de ambientalistas que se otorga cada año a siete científicos, ingenieros, empresarios y activistas de todo el mundo.

Max recibió el premio por su emprendimiento «Yawa», para construir turbinas eólicas portátiles capaces de recolectar hasta 300 litros de agua al día a partir de la humedad y la neblina atmosféricas. La tecnología puede ayudar a comunidades afectadas por sequías y cambios en los patrones de lluvia.

Para Max, el premio Jóvenes Campeones de la Tierra significó una gran motivación, puesto que le ha servido de impulso para seguir trabajando en iniciativas para el desarrollo y bienestar social. Él manifiesta que el haber recibido este financiamiento le permitirá beneficiar a más comunidades con la tecnología de Yawa. Con este premio, Max contempla que muchos otros jóvenes ganadores se lograrán movilizar alrededor del mundo para impulsar un cambio en sus respectivas comunidades y el medio ambiente.

Max afirma que el rol de Yawa Community es disminuir las brechas sociales con respecto al acceso al agua potable a través de esta tecnología. Considerada como el recurso más importante para la vida, si el agua está contaminada, los niños se enfermarán de distintas patologías, como la anemia. Por tanto, Max es consciente de que, si no se rompe este ciclo, difícilmente se podrán solucionar las demás problemáticas sociales existentes. Por otro lado, ha hecho énfasis en cómo el acceso y calidad del agua afecta también en la educación; ya que suelen ser los niños quienes se encargan de traer el agua a sus respectivas familias, por lo que deben destinar mucho de su tiempo en ello, en lugar de estudiar.

Es por ello que una de las características más importantes y resaltantes de Yawa es el ser capaz de implementarse no solo en el Perú, sino en diferentes regiones del planeta, incluso en los desiertos más áridos, puesto que aprovecha la humedad atmosférica. Max considera que Yawa ha llegado a ser un sistema multifuncional y adaptable a cualquier región, haciendo uso de energía eólica, principalmente, complementada con energía solar y eléctrica. Sin embargo, llegar a esto no ha sido fácil. Yawa ha pasado por cuatro prototipos y usado distintos materiales en su elaboración. Actualmente utiliza Aluzinc, el cual tiene resaltantes características, como el ser reciclable, liviano y resistente a las condiciones climáticas; con esto, Max reafirma cuán factible e importante es emplear una economía circular para cuidar el medio ambiente. “Los campesinos nos dicen que hace unos años podían cultivar cuatro veces al año, ahora solo pueden cultivar dos veces al año”, explica.

Max explica cuán importante es el agua para la seguridad alimentaria y por qué debemos tomar iniciativas de todo tipo, incluso haciendo uso de tecnología. Esto debido a que en la agricultura se utiliza el 70% del agua que se produce en el mundo, por lo que se debería hacer uso de la industria 4.0, la automatización, las nuevas tecnologías de cultivo, así como la hidroponía, la cual sirve para hacer menos uso del agua.

Sentido y misión de vida

En determinado momento, Max se preguntó cuál era el sentido de su vida y cuál era su misión aquí; y fue en la naturaleza en donde encontró nuevamente las respuestas. Él asegura que cada ser vivo cumple una misión en la Tierra y brindan lo que mejor saben hacer, es así como todo va funcionando ordenadamente. Max afirma que, al igual que los animales y plantas, los seres humanos también podemos y debemos contribuir: es ese el sentido de nuestra vida.
