Free and Open Sharing of Biodiversity Data Promises New Era of Research

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) announces a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) providing comprehensive analysis and review of more than 4,000…

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) announces a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) providing comprehensive analysis and review of more than 4,000 peer-reviewed studies published between 2003 and 2019 that make use of data mediated by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the world’s largest biodiversity data network. The study, written in coordination with GBIF by Mason Heberling, CMNH Curator of Botany, and Scott Weingart, Program Director of Digital Humanities at Carnegie Mellon University, provides an evidence base for the ongoing development of the next generation of biodiversity-related research.

While the accessibility of global biodiversity information has surged in the past 20 years—thanks to widespread funding initiatives for museum specimen digitization and the emergence of large-scale public participation in community science with applications like iNaturalist—scientific impacts of consolidated biodiversity data networks had not yet been quantified. The authors conclude the global aggregation of these diverse data sources empowers research at scales otherwise not possible, «launching biodiversity sciences into a new era.»

«The possibilities of a sustainable future urgently depend on this integration of biodiversity data,» says Heberling. «The good news is biodiversity science has made great strides towards data access, thanks to a community ranging from research universities, to natural history museum collections, to amateur citizen scientists making observations on day hikes. Though far from over, the impact to date has been profound, resulting in more than two peer-reviewed studies published per day, cutting across taxonomic, disciplinary, geographical, and socio-economic boundaries.»

Coordinated through its Secretariat in Copenhagen, the GBIF network of participating countries and organizations provides data-holding institutions around the world with common standards and open-source tools that enable them to share information about where and when species have been recorded.

Cited by more than 200 studies, Carnegie Museum of Natural History has made nearly a million specimen records publicly available through GBIF. This number is actively growing, as the digitization of more than 20 million museum objects continues.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History, one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, is among the top natural history museums in the country. The museum generates new scientific knowledge, advances science literacy, and inspires visitors of all ages to become passionate about science, nature, and world cultures. More information is available at carnegiemnh.org.

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — «Over 3 years ago, at an airline counter in Beijing, China, I was forced to unpack my bags and throw away personal items to meet weight restrictions. I was so embarrassed, as I did this in front of a line of annoyed travelers who looked on,» said the inventor from Ellwood City, PA, «so I invented the No-Lift Portable Luggage Scale.»

Transportation companies (airline, bus, train, cruise ships) are constantly revising the maximum luggage weight they will allow before fines are imposed or even bags refused. And now, many international airlines are limiting the weight of carry-on bags as well! My invention is the essential no-lift portable scale, which can be carried by any traveler to weigh their bags – anytime and anyplace.

Any luggage scale for sale today (whether mechanical or battery powered) requires a traveler to physically lift the piece to display the weight – sometimes in excess of 50 lbs.!

My patent-pending invention eliminates the need to lift heavy luggage in order to weigh it. It is efficient and user-friendly and eliminates the need for travelers to guess the physical weight thereby avoiding the embarrassment at the check-in counter and having to pay additional fees. The proposed cost of my invention would be less than the fees for one bag that was overweight. My invention features an accurate, compact, lightweight, durable and water-resistant design that is convenient to transport and store in any carry-on bag or backpack. My device has a rechargeable battery to supply power to a large backlit electronic display. Bluetooth technology is also integrated into my design to connect with a smartphone application to display the weight in lbs. or kg.

The original design was submitted to the Pittsburgh sales office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. For more information, write Dept. 19-PIT-1085, InventHelp, 217 Ninth Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or call (412) 288-1300 ext. 1368. «The Momentum team has a wealth of experience in energy storage,» said Erik Lensch, CEO of Leyline. «Through this partnership, Leyline will provide financing and guidance to help Momentum grow its business and achieve success. This investment commitment will provide the capital needed to support the development of up to 2GW of stand-alone battery storage and solar, plus storage projects representing $2 billion in capital investments. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the Momentum team.»

Before an energy storage project can get off the ground, it requires extensive development work, including land contracts, permits, interconnection agreements and other preparations. Leyline will support Momentum and help fund the activities that occur before Momentum receives construction financing from long-term investors. Momentum will package projects with the necessary performance guarantees, revenue contracts, and long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) through its partner networks.

«The time is now to invest in energy storage – renewables and the growing threat of climate change are going to require energy storage, and lots of it,» said Davion Hill, Momentum co-founder and partner.

«Leyline provides us not just the funding we need, but additional development experience to help us grow our business,» said Ed Rode, Momentum co-founder and partner. «This partnership with Leyline accelerates our business to larger scales. We look forward to utilizing the teams’ collective knowledge to enable more renewables and fight climate change.»
