Stand Up To Cancer® announces new research and education effort focused on improving health equity for underserved lung cancer patients

NEW YORK, July 16, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Stand Up To Cancer today announced a new $5 million grant from Bristol Myers Squibb to fund research and education efforts aimed at achieving health equity for underserved lung cancer patients, including Black people and people living in rural communities. Despite recent progress in treating lung cancer, the disease remains the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. with particularly high death rates in rural…

Despite recent progress in treating lung cancer, the disease remains the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. with particularly high death rates in rural communities and among Black men.

Stand Up To Cancer

The research efforts funded by the three-year grant will consist of supplemental grants to current Stand Up To Cancer research teams. The supplemental grants will focus on identifying new and innovative diagnostic and treatment methods for lung cancer patients in need. These supplemental grants will be designed to jumpstart pilot projects at the intersection of lung cancers, health disparities and rural healthcare, for instance increasing clinical trial enrollment among historically under-represented groups.

In early 2021, a Stand Up To Cancer Innovation Summit will launch the project, bringing together lung cancer experts with researchers specializing in health equity and access. The competitive grant application and selection process for proposed projects will be overseen by Stand Up To Cancer’s Scientific Advisory Committee.

«Stand Up To Cancer’s portfolio already includes 17 team science projects in lung cancer, and 24 lung cancer clinical trials have been funded to date,» said Nobel Laureate Phillip A. Sharp, PhD, chair of the SU2C Scientific Advisory Committee, and Institute professor, David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. «With this comprehensive lung cancer network and the dedication to diversifying cancer clinical trials, Stand Up To Cancer will leverage the Bristol Myers Squibb grant to reach lung cancer patients who have historically been marginalized by our health care system.»

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the forefront the longstanding health care disparities faced by communities of color in the U.S. Many of the same economic and social conditions that are actively contributing to COVID-19 testing and treatment inequities have created disparities in cancer care for decades. Currently, only 4% of cancer clinical trial participants are Black and 5% are Hispanic, according to FDA data. Stand Up To Cancer and Bristol Myers Squibb are committed to addressing issues in cancer care inequities. Stand Up to Cancer’s Health Equity Initiative is dedicated to increasing diverse participation in cancer clinical trials and Bristol Myers Squibb has long demonstrated its commitment to fostering health equity through support of programs that address disparities in health care and extend medical advances to communities in need around the world.

«We are so thankful to Bristol Myers Squibb for this grant, which unites our common goals of improving cancer care for underserved communities,» said Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of Stand Up To Cancer. «This is the type of commitment and collaboration needed to ensure all cancer patients benefit equally from advances in research and treatment.»

«Despite the remarkable recent progress in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the disparities in care experienced by underserved patient populations are persistent and acute,» said Adam Lenkowsky, general manager and head, U.S., Oncology, Immunology, Cardiovascular, Bristol Myers Squibb. «As a company focused on transforming patients’ lives through science, we are dedicated to improving health outcomes for all patients. Our support of Stand Up to Cancer’s work to address the burden of lung cancer among diverse and rural communities is another extension of our long-standing commitment to ensuring that every patient has access to quality care.»

Since 2014, Bristol Myers Squibb has provided funding for important Stand Up To Cancer research initiatives. Bristol Myers Squibb was the inaugural donor for SU2C Catalyst®, supporting research and clinical trials targeting a wide range of cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer, metastatic melanoma, smoldering multiple myeloma, pediatric hypermutant cancers, pediatric brain tumors and pediatric neuroblastoma. Funding has also supported  Convergence Grants, which harness computational science to understand fundamental cancer biology, Innovative Research Grants focused on immuno-oncology, as well as Dream Teams focused on lung cancer.

Stand Up To Cancer’s Health Equity Initiative formalizes requirements that will apply to all future teams seeking Stand Up To Cancer funding. The requirements include addressing recruitment and retention of patients from different ethnic groups and underserved communities to improve diverse participation in cancer clinical trials. To improve cancer clinical trial education, outreach and recruitment in underserved communities, Stand Up To Cancer is collaborating with advocacy and community-based organizations such as the Black Women’s Health Imperative and Friends of Cancer Research.

Bristol Myers Squibb has long been committed to promoting heath equity and continues to forge collaborations and invest in programs to increase the reach of medical innovation to diverse and heavily burdened populations. An important example of the company’s commitment in this area is the work of the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, which for more than 20 years has launched initiatives around the world to improve the health outcomes of those disproportionately affected by serious diseases. This includes initiatives focused on underserved populations in the Southeast United States where the lung cancer burden is the highest, with a tailored focus on innovative models of prevention, detection, and education while helping people with lung cancer access and navigate cancer care and support services. From 2014-2019, the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation committed $35 million to expand the scope of community-based resources and cancer survivorship support programs to underserved populations in the U.S.

About Stand Up To Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C) raises funds to accelerate the pace of research to get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now. SU2C, a division of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was established in 2008 by media and entertainment leaders who utilize these communities’ resources to engage the public in supporting a new, collaborative model of cancer research, to increase awareness about cancer prevention, and to highlight progress being made in the fight against the disease. MCALLEN, Texas, July 16, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — El Milagro Clinic today announced it has launched rapid COVID-19 testing, together with CVS Health, at its clinic in the Rio Grande Valley. CVS Pharmacists and pharmacy employees will staff the testing operation. Testing will be provided at no cost to patients.

CVS Health

«We are very excited to be teaming up with CVS Health to increase the much-needed COVID-19 testing services in our region.» said Marisol Resendez, Executive Director, El Milagro Clinic. «This collaboration comes at a most appropriate time as we are experiencing an exponentially increasing amount of positive COVID-19 cases. We know that it is the uninsured and underserved in our community that are at a higher risk from getting severely ill from this virus, and this partnership highlights our commitment to providing healthcare services to the most vulnerable. We are grateful for CVS Health’s vision to expand access to testing to those that need it most.»

Testing at the El Milagro Clinic, located at 901 E. Vermont Avenue in McAllen, will be open to the public by appointment beginning Friday, July 17.  Patients will need to pre-register in advance by calling 956-213-6400, to schedule a time slot for testing.  Testing at the site is conducted inside the clinic; a personal vehicle is not required and results will be provided on-the-spot.  To be eligible for testing, patients will need to meet criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in addition to age guidelines.

«Working with partners like El Milagro Clinic is an important part of our comprehensive strategy to increase access to COVID-19 testing,» said Dr. Garth Graham, Vice President, Community Health and Chief Community Health Officer, CVS Health.  «This joint effort allows us to tap into the network of a trusted organization with strong community ties to further expand testing in areas of greatest need.»

The CVS Health Foundation, a charitable entity associated with CVS Health, has a longstanding relationship with the National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics, providing more than $9 million over the last six years to help clinics nationwide, like El Milagro Clinic, to increase access to care for underserved populations.

«Accessible, abundant, efficient and accurate testing is critical to reining in the surge of COVID-19 in South Texas,» said Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15). «CVS Health will be an enormous resource and expand access to testing for our vulnerable populations. I am grateful for CVS Health for stepping up and answering our community’s call for help.»

El Milagro Clinic has provided comprehensive primary, disease prevention and behavioral health care services to Rio Grande Valley residents who are medically indigent since 1996.

«Hidalgo County has been identified as one of the nation’s hotspots for COVID-19 with more than 7,000 known positive cases. Testing is essential to contain the spread of the virus,» said Roberto M. Garcia, El Milagro Clinic Board Chair. «Mass testing is taking place at several locations throughout the county; however, these efforts are presently overwhelmed. We welcome the opportunity to partner with CVS Health for COVID-19 testing in the battle against the spread of this virus in our community.»

In addition to offering testing together with several community partners across the country, CVS Health is offering drive-thru testing at more than 1,400 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide.  Nearly sixty percent of these CVS Pharmacy test sites serve communities with significant need for support, as measured by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Social Vulnerability Index.

Hispanics’ Consumer Confidence Increases During Second Quarter of 2020 Despite Persistence of COVID-19

BOCA RATON, Florida, July 16, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Consumer confidence among Hispanics in the United States edged higher in the second quarter, even as it became clear that the coronavirus pandemic would not be a temporary disruption.

BOCA RATON, Florida, July 16, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Consumer confidence among Hispanics in the United States edged higher in the second quarter, even as it became clear that the coronavirus pandemic would not be a temporary disruption.

The Business and Economics Polling Initiative (BEPI) at Florida Atlantic University conducts surveys on business, economic, political, and social issues with main focus on Hispanic attitudes and opinions at regional, state and national levels.

The Hispanic Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 82.8 from 81.3 in the first quarter, according to the Florida Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative (FAU BEPI) in FAU’s College of Business. The index is higher than the general population’s consumer confidence sentiment in June of 78.1, as published by the University of Michigan.

Hispanics’ consumer confidence weakened at the end of 2019 as concerns grew that the longest economic expansion in history was due to end. But confidence plummeted in the first quarter of 2020 after the first cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. led to a sweeping shutdown of non-essential businesses and millions of job losses.

«Perhaps what has contributed to the second quarter optimism is the reopening of the economy, low interest rates and deep discounting by businesses desperate to increase sales,» said Monica Escaleras, Ph.D., director of FAU BEPI.

In the second quarter of 2020, fewer Hispanics said they are better off financially than a year ago, but 71 percent said they are more optimistic of their future financial situation, compared with 58 percent who felt that way in the first quarter of 2020.

As for the country’s economic outlook, 46 percent of respondents said they expect good business conditions in the upcoming year, up from 34 percent in the first quarter. Also, 60 percent of respondents are confident in the long-run economic outlook, compared to 57 percent in the first quarter. Hispanics who self-identified as Republicans (70 percent) are more optimistic in the long-run economic outlook of the country than Democrats, Independents and non-registered voters.

Despite the better mood overall, fewer Hispanics in the second quarter (42 percent) believe it is a good time to buy a big-ticket item compared to the first quarter (53 percent).

With consumer confidence increasing, fewer Hispanics disapproved of U.S. President Donald Trump’s performance compared to the first quarter. His disapproval rating fell 5 percentage points, to 49 percent from 56 percent.

The poll is based on a sampling of 741 Hispanics, 18 years of age and older, from March 1 to June 30. The margin of error is +/- 3.60 percentage points.

CVS Pharmacists and CVS Pharmacy colleagues will staff the testing operation. Testing will be provided at no cost to patients.

CVS Health (PRNewsFoto/CVS Health)

«The Ibn Sina Foundation has been serving the uninsured community for the nearly two decades, providing preventive and primary medical, dental, diagnostic and specialty care services through seven community clinics across Greater Houston and Port Arthur areas,» said Mr. Nasruddin Rupani, Chairman of the Ibn Sina Foundation. «We are pleased to work with CVS Health, and today we are excited to add an additional location to provide free COVID-19 testing services to meet the needs of our patients and community members.»

Testing at Ibn Sina North Shepherd Community Clinic, located at 5012 North Shepherd Drive in Houston, will be open to the public by appointment beginning Friday, July 17. Patients will need to pre-register in advance by calling 832-426-3760 to schedule a time slot for testing.  A personal vehicle is not required for testing and results will be provided on-the-spot.  To be eligible for testing, patients will need to meet criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in addition to age guidelines.

Rapid COVID-19 testing also continues to be available at the Ibn Sina Wilcrest Community Clinic location, which the Ibn Sina Foundation and CVS Health launched last month.

«Following the strong community response to our first testing site in Houston, we’re pleased to be able to expand our testing capabilities, particularly at a time of urgent and increased need in the region,» said Dr. Garth Graham, Vice President, Community Health and Chief Community Health Officer, CVS Health. «Ibn Sina Foundation’s deep commitment to the residents it serves has made them an invaluable partner as we work to bolster local efforts to manage the spread of the virus and help communities stay healthy.»

The CVS Health Foundation, a charitable entity associated with CVS Health, has a longstanding relationship with the National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics, providing more than $9 million over the last six years to help clinics nationwide, like the Ibn Sina Foundation, to increase access to care for underserved populations.

«Unfortunately people in Houston and Harris County are contracting COVID-19 at an alarming rate, especially in communities of color,» said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18). «I have repeatedly called for increased access to COVID-19 testing because testing is the key to saving lives! We must encourage Houstonians, Texans, and Americans to get tested and to continue adhering to CDC guidelines on social distancing and wearing masks. This is a crucial time and there is no doubt more COVID-19 testing is needed. That is why I am so proud of the efforts displayed by the Ibn Sina Foundation and CVS health who are committed to providing more opportunities for no-cost COVID-19 testing to Houston! Only together can we see an end to the COVID-19 health crisis globally, in our nation, and in our beloved state of Texas. Remember, the key to saving lives is testing, testing, testing!»

Ibn Sina Foundation was established in 2001 by a group of business and healthcare professionals. The Foundation’s mission is to ensure the health of the community by providing integrated, preventive and primary care in a clinical setting through the dissemination and application of health-related knowledge, thereby enhancing the quality of life of people.

MENLO PARK, California, July 15, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Frederickson Partners, the largest People and human resources (HR) executive search firm and talent network in the U.S., today announced an expanded Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Practice. The service will be led by Chief of Staff Ben Taylor, a five-year veteran of the firm, and CEO Valerie Frederickson. The firm reports that in June it saw a threefold increase in companies requesting D&I searches. Fueled by Black Lives Matter protests in the U.S., many businesses are committing to creating a more equitable and diverse workplace and now plan to hire their first D&I leader.

Frederickson Partners expands diversity and inclusion practice due to overwhelming demand

«As nationally-recognized D&I thought leaders, we have a 25-year track record partnering with our clients to improve racial diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. In addition, we have placed some of the most visible and respected D&I leaders in the world,» said Taylor. «Our goal with this expanded practice is to build upon that history by helping companies recruit and hire diversity leaders who have specialized experience and skills to communicate the business case for D&I, and gain buy-in from the highest level of the organization.»

«With the Black Lives Matter movement, CEOs and boards now aim to improve diversity and inclusion in the workplace, to make right long-standing disparities in opportunity,» said Frederickson. «The movement has highlighted the critical importance of equal pay and promotion irrespective of race, gender and age. Experienced leaders who can fill a chief diversity office position are a small, highly sought-after pool of executives who have proven they can drive change within an organization and deliver results. We help leading employees find those in-demand leaders.»

Frederickson Partners provides People and HR executive search and HR advisory services to companies in technology, financial technology (fintech) and financial services, healthcare, digital marketing and many other industries. The firm has expertise in filling roles across the spectrum of HR disciplines. It has placed diversity officers at companies including Yahoo!, NetApp, Genentech and Facebook, which worked with Frederickson Partners to add D&I leadership across multiple business areas.

«In addition to funding and hiring a leader for D&I, employers need to empower that person with executive buy-in and the resources to enable change,» said Frederickson.
