He holds the Victor W. Fazio, M.D., Endowed Chair in Colorectal Surgery.

Wearable Technology Could Prevent COVID-19 Complications And Death For People Recovering At Home

NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A new study at Montefiore Health System and <span…

NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A new study at Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine will compare the outcomes of people with COVID-19 who are monitored at home by wearable technology, to people who receive standard outpatient care. The investigators hope to determine if Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) can be used successfully to track symptoms and flag people at risk for getting severely ill, and why.

Montefiore

Jonathan D. Leff, M.D., FASE, vice chair, Faculty & Academic Affairs and chief, Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Montefiore and professor of anesthesiology and of cardiovascular & thoracic surgery, Einstein, is leading the study, which will include 150 people being monitored remotely by a team of medical professionals.

The team will keep a constant eye on participants’ health status in real-time, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and temperature, all while watching for any signs of deterioration. Researchers will also enroll 150 people who get standard outpatient care, which consists of self-monitoring and follow-up phone calls from providers. The outcomes of the two groups will then be compared.

«We know that the majority of people with COVID-19 fare well recovering at home,» said Dr. Leff. «However, some people may not be comfortable managing their own symptoms or may not notice when their condition gets worse. Our study will help identify abnormal vital signs associated with declining health and hopefully prevent the development of life-threatening complications before it’s too late.»

To monitor participants, researchers are partnering with doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and wellness coaches at MonitorMe, a telehealth provider with experience managing complex care patients. People in the RPM group will be monitored 24 hours a day by the team, and will keep a daily diary of their symptoms, including cough and difficulty breathing. People being monitored have access to real-time support, they can consult a provider immediately and be admitted directly to the hospital, if necessary.

After patient data has been collected and the study is complete, the investigators will partner with Montefiore & Einstein’s Center for Health Data Innovations to build an algorithm that will predict which COVID-19 patients with mild or moderate disease are at risk for developing severe complications. This tool could potentially be used to identify people who would benefit from early intervention and enhanced treatment.

«While the COVID-positive testing rate in New York is around 1% right now, we can’t predict if there will be an uptick in cases during flu season,» said co-investigator Singh Nair, M.D., director, Anesthesiology Clinical Research Studies, Montefiore and assistant professor of anesthesiology, Einstein. «Our goal is to determine if wearable technologies can play a role in improving care outside the hospital and pinpoint who is most likely to suffer from COVID-19 complications. By doing so, we can be smarter about how we deploy resources and deliver the most informed care.»

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia, Sept. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The book Huella Sur was created by Gloria Eyzaguirre. Gloria is an author and journalist—a writer, editor, and head of information for the newspapers Presencia, La Razón, and the weekly Pulso from Bolivia. She is also a recipient of a National Press Award and an International Literature Award.

Gloria said this about her book: «Through six stories from the geography of South America, Huella Sur collects the traces left by Europeans and Africans in their initial stage of arrival in these lands and reveals the pressure exerted on native cultures.

The love story was imagined around a painting that hangs on the walls of a cloistered convent in the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia, while the brand of slaves travels through Callao and Cuzco in Peru as well as the waters of Colombia. With so many strangers and so much strangeness around, the natives (turned into Indians) entered the history of the world by force of whip and being ashamed. La Espera speaks of her constant efforts to bring back her ancestors and to remake herself. The world could look to the south side to know these signs.»

Published by Page Publishing, Gloria Eyzaguirre’s new book Huella Sur will open the readers’ eyes to the persecution of past native inhabitants whose lives were put in constant burden through enslavement.

Consumers who wish to feel the impassioned moments of the original inhabitants of South America and their dealings with foreigners can purchase Huella Sur in any bookstore online at Apple iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

Seven Million American Women of Childbearing Age Live in Counties with Limited or No Maternity Care, Contributing to Maternal and Infant Health Crisis, Finds New March of Dimes Report

ARLINGTON, Virginia, Sept. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — March of Dimes, the nonprofit organization leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies, today released a new report entitled <a target="_blank"…

ARLINGTON, Virginia, Sept. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — March of Dimes, the nonprofit organization leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies, today released a new report entitled Nowhere to Go: Maternity Care Deserts Across the U.S. The report, published with the support of partners at RB’s Enfa portfolio of brands through our joint Better Starts for All initiative, finds that seven million American women of childbearing age, 35 percent of which are women of color, live in counties without access or with severely limited access to vital maternity care where 500,000 babies are born each year.  More than 2 million women live in maternity care deserts, counties with no access to maternity care, facing additional barriers to care. Without access to routine, quality health care these moms and babies have an increased risk of serious health complications, including maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, as well as low birth weight and preterm.

March of Dimes Foundation Logo

«Maternity care deserts expose the serious and sometimes deadly issues that can result from lack of access to care for moms and babies,» said Stacey D. Stewart, President and CEO of March of Dimes. «This situation is unacceptable, especially when considering that COVID-19 has put additional strain on our healthcare system and potentially forced the closure of additional maternity wards. We must work to address the systemic health disparities that exist in our nation and find real solutions for these seven million women living without full access and mobilize virtual services, including telehealth and peer-to-peer support services, to provide aide to women living in these deserts.»

The 2020 report showcases the maternity care desert status of all counties across the U.S. based on the most recent data on availability of hospitals, birth centers, OB providers and health insurance. It also includes new sections on COVID-19 and pregnancy, telemedicine and information on the role of doulas in maternity care. Due to the impact of COVID-19, health systems and/or hospital-based maternity care centers located in both urban and rural areas are facing unpresented financial declines that could necessitate the increased closure of maternity care centers, further contributing to the troubling gap.

Additional key findings of the report include:

  • 54% of counties across the U.S. have limited or no access to maternity care and 35% of these counties are considered deserts.
  • More than 2 million women of reproductive age live in one of 1,095 maternity care desert counties, with no hospital offering obstetric (OB) care, no birth center, and no OB provider.
  • An additional 4.8 million women of reproductive age live in counties with limited access to maternity care.
  • An urban environment does not equate to better care. 3.3 million women (47.5%) live in urban counties, yet still lack full access to maternity care. 740,000 of these women live in maternity care deserts with no access to maternity care.
  • Women of color represent 35% of the women of childbearing age in areas of no or very limited access to maternity care.
  • Since the last Maternity Care Deserts report in 2018, March of Dimes found six percent of counties had shifted, with equal percentages achieving higher and lower levels of care and three counties moving out of the maternity care desert classification.

Policymakers and advocates must come to together to tackle the impossible gaps so many of our mothers are facing through a coordinated series of policies demanding equity, access and prevention – an agenda March of Dimes calls #BlanketChange.

Through the #BlanketChange agenda, March of Dimes and its partners are calling on candidates and elected official to protect and improve maternal and infant health by:

  • Eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities and driving economic, social and health equity by focusing on prevention, treatment and social determinants of health.
  • Improving access to care through expanding critical health programs and closing gaps in coverage.
  • Addressing preventable health conditions through expanding research and improving maternal morbidity and mortality data collection.

«This is not a rural issue or urban issue – this is an American issue. Just as you can’t separate the health of moms and babies, you can’t take moms and babies out of their economic and social environment – the community where they live and the larger systems that guide our health care, housing, education, and employment systems. This is why it is critical to adopt a holistic and comprehensive agenda to support moms and babies,» said Dr. Rahul Gupta, Chief Medical and Health Officer, Senior Vice President and Interim Chief Scientific Officer at March of Dimes. «In this election year, March of Dimes is calling on candidates and policymakers at all levels – federal, state and local – to take the steps to address the maternal and infant health crisis.»

In the U.S., significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in maternal care with communities of color disproportionately impacted by the maternal and infant health crisis. Ensuring access to maternity care for all women has the potential to reduce disparities and improve birth outcomes for all.

«The United States is in the grips of a national maternal and infant health crisis, and it’s well-beyond the point that our country should treat it like one,» said Olympian and March of Dimes advocate Allyson Felix. «This crisis is disproportionately impacting moms and babies of color and we urgently need blanket policy change that can improve access to care, eliminate health disparities, address preventable conditions, and drive health and social equity. It’s time for communities, candidates, and policymakers to address these issues with the attention and action they deserve.»

The 2021 model sets a new standard for Sorento’s sustained excellence and leadership in the compact SUV segment as the only vehicle in its class to offer the best estimated fuel economy for a 3-row SUV with 37 mpg combined.3

«Sorento has always been one of Kia’s premier products,» said Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia Motors North America & Kia Motors America. «Its combination of style, utility, safety and comfort have made it a perennial customer favorite. This stunning new Sorento sets the bar in the compact SUV class even higher and represents the pinnacle of Kia design and engineering. We’re extremely proud to add it to our line-up of incredible automobiles.»

The 2021 Sorento is expected to go on sale later this year and pricing will be announced closer to its on-sale date.

A Sorento for Everyone
The 2021 Sorento will be offered in five trims: LX, S, EX, SX, and SX-Prestige and available with either FWD or AWD. Initially available with three powertrains, including a turbo hybrid, a PHEV will be introduced in the next model year. The hero model is the X-Line SX-Prestige AWD, a variant that further demonstrates the transformation of the Sorento into a more premium and tech-oriented SUV. The X-Line SX-Prestige AWD trim includes:

  • Standard torque-on-demand AWD with center locking differential and downhill descent control

  • Exclusive bumper and exterior details, such as unique 20-inch alloy wheels and bridge-type roof rack

Stunning New Shapes
The exterior of the 2021 Sorento presents a study in stylish architectural structure defined by sharp, modern lines and accented with high-tech details – more authentic SUV than soft crossover. This evolution of Kia’s dynamic aesthetic is exemplified best in the following details:

  • Kia’s modernized «tiger nose,» with new «eyeline» DRL details and a wide grille extending into the headlight and hood structure
  • The hood edge wraps around the body side and integrates into the rear shoulder line, enhancing length and width
  • Standard LED headlamps and optional signature LED forward lighting includes daytime running lights. Headlamp and DRL modules are separated for a high-tech look
  • Strong side character line emphasizes muscular and athletic profile
  • Distinctive dynamic wave shape at base of the C pillar
  • Six different alloy wheel designs, from 17-inches to 20-inches, which is the largest ever for Sorento

The all-new interior continues the strong, solid and sophisticated sensibility of the exterior. Following a credo of «Refined Boldness,» the interior designers instilled the cabin with unexpected materials to cast a striking effect, including:

  • Bright satin finishes
  • Available metal texture inlays or open-pore wood inlays
  • Leather embossed quilt pattern on optional leather-equipped models
  • Eye-catching vertical center air vents impart a sense of strength and presence

A Strong Base to Build On
The 2021 Sorento is built on an all-new 3rd generation «N3» platform that is a lighter, stronger and more flexible design than previous models. Features include:

  • Increased wheelbase by nearly 1.4 inches for more interior space

TORRANCE, California, Sept. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura’s top-selling SUV over the last two years gains a healthy dose of NSX supercar DNA with the creation of the 2021 RDX PMC Edition, the fourth vehicle hand assembled by master technicians at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Ohio. Only 360 units of the RDX PMC Edition will be built for the North American market, each bathed in stunning Thermal Orange Pearl paint shared with the electrified NSX supercar. The range topping RDX PMC Edition will carry a sticker price in the low $50,000s1 when the first customer deliveries begin this October.

Watch the Reveal Video: https://youtu.be/fBWGxJA2GSg

The RDX PMC Edition is the most well equipped RDX variant, combining the top-shelf features from the RDX Advance Package with the aggressive and sporty styling cues of the RDX A-Spec. Exclusive to the RDX PMC Edition are gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels; a body color grille surround; black chrome exhaust finishers; and gloss-black treatment for the roof, side mirrors and door handles. As with previous PMC Edition models, Acura’s industry leading torque vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) is standard equipment.

The RDX PMC Edition’s Thermal Orange Pearl exterior is complemented on the inside with color-matched orange stitching for the seats, center console, door panels, steering wheel and floor mats. Mixing A-Spec style with the Advance Package’s premium touches, the RDX PMC edition features a 10.5-inch color Head-Up Display, 16-way power Sport Seats trimmed in Ebony Milano leather and Ultrasuede®, heated steering wheel and heated outboard rear seats.

Bringing RDX PMC Edition to Life

The 2021 Acura RDX follows the unique formula established with the TLX and MDX PMC Edition models. Once the body-in-white arrives at PMC, each RDX PMC Edition is finished in Thermal Orange Pearl paint, a striking premium paint offered on NSX since 2019. The paint is applied using PMC’s advanced robotic paint system in multiple base coats to enhance color intensity. Next a mid-coat of gold and orange mica is applied giving off a pearlescent effect in the sunlight. Lastly, four layers of clearcoat are applied to increase the paint’s luster and protect the finish. Each PMC Edition undergoes the same meticulous hand inspection process given to the NSX. The total time in paint, including curing, is five days.

Immediately following the paint process, PMC master technicians begin hand assembly, starting with installation of all drivetrain and chassis components, wiring harnesses and electronics. Once completed, the PMC Edition 20-inch wheels and tires and exterior trim are added. The final step in the process is to fit the vehicle with its unique interior including an individually numbered serial plate affixed to the RDX’s center console.

After completing the hand assembly process, every RDX PMC Edition undergoes an identical quality control process as NSX, which includes a full electronic systems line-end test, expert wheel alignment, dyno run, water-leak test and final paint examination. Before exiting PMC, each vehicle is wrapped in a protective film and loaded onto an enclosed, single-car carrier for transport to an Acura dealer.

Authentic Street Food Shines in New Campaign Highlighting Pork’s Major Role in Global Cuisine

DES MOINES, Iowa, Sept. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The National Pork Board introduced today «Menú Urbano,» a campaign dedicated to celebrating cultures from around the world and encouraging Latinos to experience pork in the most authentic, real, and delicious way possible: as street food.

With Hispanic Heritage Month underway and to bring Menú Urbano to life, the National Pork Board has partnered with Mexican-born celebrity and TV host Ana Patricia Gámez and three influential Latina foodies. Throughout 2020, Gámez and these influencers will introduce Hispanic consumers to the street food cultures in Miami, Los Angeles, El Paso, and Tijuana, Mexico, and will also re-imagine these classic street food dishes for cooks at home.

The goal, according to Gámez, is to demonstrate the endless culinary possibilities that exist with pork.

«I am a firm believer that food can act as a bridge to understanding cultures and each other, and for this reason, I’m really excited to join the National Pork Board and share some of my favorite street food recipes — some of which I enjoyed as a kid in Mexico,» Gámez said. «As a mom and wife, it’s important to keep traditions alive through cooking, and pork’s authentic flavors allow me to keep our Latino heritage alive at home.»

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, pork is the most popular protein in the world — and for good reason. From its authentic flavor to its many cut varieties, pork serves as an affordable and easy solution for everything you crave, including street food.

According to research by the National Pork Board, U.S. Hispanics are some of pork’s best consumers and more likely to eat pork than non-Hispanics (67% vs. 62%, respectively).

«Menú Urbano showcases how pork connects all cultures, regardless of what corner of the world we are from,» said Jose de Jesus, senior director of multicultural marketing at the National Pork Board. «We may cook it differently and use different ingredients, but pork is a food we have in common. What better way to bring that to life than by shining a spotlight on some of our communities’ cultural crusaders: street food vendors?»

According to the North American Industry Classification System Report, street food is a $3.6 billion industry with an annual growth of 6.5 percent from 2014-2019. That makes it one of the fastest-growing industries within the larger hospitality sector. As street food represents cultures worldwide, 41 percent of street food products are Central and South American, Asian, or from mixed ethnicities. The street food business is expected to reach $3.9 billion over the next five years.

As part of the Menú Urbano series, consumers will be introduced to street vendors and explore a taste of their different cultures through the National Pork Board’s Spanish-language digital platforms. Delicious street food pork dishes will be shared on @PorkEsSabor social channels and website, PorkEsSabor.com.

Menú Urbano partner influencers include:

  • Victoria Gautier, a Venezuelan foodie and lifestyle influencer based in Miami, FL
  • Karen Delgado, a Mexican influencer and the creator of Mi Cocina Rápida, based in Los Angeles, CA
  • Maria Sierra, a Honduran influencer and the co-founder, host, and producer of La Cooquette, a food and travel YouTube channel that celebrates culinary adventures around the world, based in Tijuana, Mexico

Traditional recipes that will be featured throughout 2020 include tostadas de tinga de cerdo, quesabirria: quesadillas de birria de cerdo, cachapa con pernil de cerdo horneado, and mini hamburguesas de cochinita pibil Yucateca.

To stay connected on the latest with Menú Urbano, recipe ideas, and more information, please visit PorkEsSabor.com and follow along at @PorkEsSabor on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Join the conversation using #MenuUrbano.

$111 Million NIH Grant Awarded to Prevent and Treat HIV-Associated Cancers

BRONX, N.Y., Sept. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The widespread use of antiretroviral therapy to suppress the HIV virus has helped tens of millions of people with HIV live healthier, longer lives—but an unfortunate consequence of people living longer with HIV is an increased risk of cancer. For 25 years, the AIDS Malignancy Consortium (AMC) has led national and international efforts to prevent and treat of HIV-related cancers. Now, Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine have received a five-year, $111 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to lead this research consortium.

Montefiore

«People living with HIV shoulder an enormous burden of cancer,» said Joseph Sparano, M.D., associate chair for clinical research in the department of oncology at Montefiore, associate director for clinical research at the NCI-designated Albert Einstein Cancer Center, and principal investigator (PI) on the grant. «AMC is the only organization worldwide solely dedicated to the study, treatment, and prevention of cancer in this group of people. Montefiore and Einstein are perfectly positioned to lead this organization and steer research advances.»

Engaging the Community at Risk
Approximately 38 million people are infected with HIV, including 1.2 million in the U.S. People living with HIV have an increased risk of developing cancer compared with the general population and are more likely to die of cancer, interrupting otherwise healthy lives. This is due to a variety of causes, including long-term inflammation and an overtaxed immune system. In addition, HIV infections are concentrated in marginalized communities in the U.S., primarily among people of color, who make up approximately 70% of new infections.

To address this need, Montefiore developed an HIV Oncology Service, directed by Luca Paoluzzi, M.D., a medical oncologist at Montefiore, assistant professor of medicine at Einstein, and the AMC PI at Montefiore and Einstein. The newly established service brings together Montefiore and Einstein’s experience in patient care and research.

Partnership with NIH AIDS Research Center
Collaborating with Harris Goldstein, M.D., associate dean for scientific resources, director of the NIH-funded Einstein-Rockefeller-CUNY Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), and professor of pediatrics and of microbiology & immunology at Einstein, Dr. Sparano has established a scientific working group focused on cancer and HIV that will guide the direction of future collaborative research at the CFAR and AMC. The group will be co-chaired by Dr. Sparano and Howard Strickler, M.D., professor and chief of epidemiology in the department of epidemiology & population health at Einstein and Montefiore. It will identify areas of need, evaluate emerging research, and design new clinical trials that will be rolled out at dozens of locations at Montefiore and around the world.

AMC’s International Network
The AMC oversees a network of 42 clinical trial sites in the United States, Africa, and Latin America, as well as translational scientists who support its clinical trials. It also runs a career enhancement program to ensure that the next generation of leaders receive resources and support. In addition, the AMC actively engages with people living with HIV and cancer throughout the world so the consortium can identify and address the needs of this community with their input.

Established in 1995, the AMC has initiated more than 100 clinical trials, surveys, and laboratory studies involving approximately 8,700 individuals. Results from these investigations have strengthened international practice guidelines, including treatment for Kaposi sarcoma and lymphoma; advanced prevention and management of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers; and furthered the use of precision therapeutics and immunotherapy for people living with HIV who receive antiretroviral therapy.

«During this next phase, we will build on these successes, developing and leading additional clinical trials designed to address the most critical needs of people with HIV and cancer, precancerous disease, and individuals at high risk for cancer—most importantly, completing the ANCHOR trial,» said Dr. Sparano.

The ANCHOR Study
The ANCHOR Study, which stands for Anal Cancer HSIL Outcomes Research, focuses on the prevention and treatment of anal cancer, which is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). The virus causes changes in the skin near the anus, called «high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions,» or HSIL. Most HSIL go away on their own, but some become cancer and spread to other parts of the body.

«Regular screening for anal cancer can catch the disease when it is highly treatable, much like the use of pap smears to identify abnormal tissue before it develops into cervical cancer, which is also caused by HPV,» said Rebecca Levine, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at Einstein, a surgical oncologist at Montefiore, and the ANCHOR principal investigator at Einstein and Montefiore. «The aim of the study is to establish best practices for the prevention and treatment of anal cancer. We expect the results of this study will have an enormous impact on clinical care,» added Dr. Levine.

Einstein-Montefiore HIV/AIDS Research and Care
Since HIV emerged in the 1980s, Einstein and Montefiore have been leaders in HIV/AIDS research and clinical care. Its researchers were the first to identify pediatric AIDS as a different disease from adult AIDS and to find effective treatments. Montefiore and Einstein also established one of the first five NIH-supported AIDS Treatment and Evaluation Units and led early studies of HIV among people with substance use disorders. Faculty members are principal investigators on significant NIH-funded initiatives, including the Women’s Interagency HIV Study/Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study and the Central Africa International Epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS study.

Montefiore’s clinical care programs include the adult AIDS Center, one of the largest HIV treatment programs in the U.S. The AIDS Center’s outpatient Center for Positive Living/Infectious Diseases Clinic offers state-of-the-art care for adults living with HIV/AIDS. Its Oval Center offers sexual health services, testing, care, and counseling along with PrEP and PEP to reduce the risk of HIV infection, and HIV care to LGBTQ+ individuals aged 16 and up.  Montefiore’s Adolescent AIDS Program serves 13- to 24-year-olds with comprehensive offerings including mental healthcare and support services, and primary care for LGBTQ+ youth

The grant, titled «AIDS Malignancy Consortium» was funded by the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health (2UM1CA121947).

Other areas where the College of Medicine is concentrating its efforts include developmental brain research, neuroscience, cardiac disease, and initiatives to reduce and eliminate ethnic and racial health disparities. Its partnership with Montefiore, the University Hospital and academic medical center for Einstein, advances clinical and translational research to accelerate the pace at which new discoveries become the treatments and therapies that benefit patients. Einstein runs one of the largest residency and fellowship training programs in the medical and dental professions in the United States through Montefiore and an affiliation network involving hospitals and medical centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn and on Long Island.
